7 year veteran RNY gastric bypass and failed but still have hope!
Kmartinez15 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello, I am new to this site, but not to surgery as mine was in 2008. My highest weight at surgery was 250lbs. I initially lost 60 lbs in the first 2 months. However once I was anle to eat more foods etc I cheated alot and went back to my old ways. I now am at the weight of 230. Yep pretty close to pre op. I beat myself up about it, but I know it isn't too late. I am trying to limit soda coffee drinks and Desserts. Does anyone have suggestions for yummy desserts that are ok for us to eat? I love chocolate! I have bittled Water and bought sugar free kool aid packets u flavor water with( too plan regular). And suggestions? I have bad arthritis( bursitis in knees and ankylosing dpondylitis cervical spine) which limits exercise however I now swim 1-2 times a week trying to get somewhere. Thank u all! Kristen -
Go to the one you love. It will be worth it in the long run. A lot of Dr.s push Bypass - they make more money, and they don't have to rely on you to lose weight. They can make you lose weight with bypass. I drive about an hour and 15 minutes (in Houston traffic, sometimes 2-3 hours) to my Dr.s office. Once you have surgery you will only need to go for maintenance. You could even get a fill Dr. close - maybe the one you are not fond of :-)

I accept complete and total responsibility for regaining. I lost 101 pounds within the first year---95 of it before I even had a fill so , as most people say, the weightloss before the fill was icing on the cake. Got my first fill 14 months out. Lost six more pounds. Weightloss stopped. Eating only 1,000 calories a day, exercising *and* working as a nurse (constantly on my feet and on the go), I still am not sure *why* it came to a halt but it did. My weight stayed at the 101 loss for about three months. I started battling depression (and I still am) and was dealing with some things in my life that I never thought would happen. I did not know *how* to deal with them so I dealt with them the same way I had in the past---food. The band is a tool and I learned it can be very easy to eat around. I *thought* I had conquered my food demons. I have not, obviously. My doctor thought if anybody would be successful with the band, it'd be me. I was for a while. I was one of his success stories. I am proof positive, though, that anybody can slip back. As for the original question about jealousy---the only jealousy I noticed was my stepdaughter. She had gained quite a bit of weight and when I started losing, she would make smart aleck remarks...during the liquid phase when I was using Protein Drinks, she made remarks about the waste of money on them, how *she* knew how to "really" lose weight and would "if I wanted too" and that she would "never allow myself to get so fat as to make somebody pay for me to have surgery". :angry To this day, she is convinced I had a gastric bypass. I have no clue who told her that but that is what she thinks. I never discussed my surgery with her or her brothers. They are a very judgemental bunch and it wasn't really anything up for discussion with them. They have their own assumptions.

I had a revision from sleeve to RNY and from my 10 day pre-op diet plus the first month after revision, I have lost 26 lbs. I will be 61 soon and am in One-derland to give you a little background. Everyone is different but that is my current story. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

I had a vsg in 2012 and initially lost 75lbs before finding out i was pregnant. Something about metabolism changing and birth control not being enough. I have gained all but 20lbs back. I am wanting to have revision surgery to bypass. Do you know of anyone who had a bypass but failed in the first year? Two years? I dont have to be skinny. I just want to be healthier.

How is your recovery going?
coconutlemongrass replied to coconutlemongrass's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I really hope it's not a stricture! I was in the hospital for 9 days with complications and I'm so scared to go back. The pain isn't unbearable, I just didn't realize I'd be so sore for so long! However I did have a feeding tube placed during surgery and removed two weeks later which hurt a lot. I think youre right that my body just isn't ready for as many solids right now. I wasn't given a diet plan and didn't have any diet education (I had bypass for bile reflux not weight loss) and that's been a big struggle. Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App -
Lap Band Revision to the Sleeve
breprih posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi All, I had the lap band back in 2009 and in 3 years I lost 103lbs. At that time I started trying to have a baby and that proved to be very difficult. After many miscarriages I finally had a baby 4 years later (after 2 round of IVF. During my struggles with infertility things seemed off with my band though I was preoccupied with trying to conceive and I didn't really care too much. Due to an ectopic pregnancy I had emergency surgery to have a fallopian tube removed and even that surgeon said that she took at look at my band and it "didn't look right" to her. Now that my baby is a year old I've been thinking about going back to my baratric surgeon. As of right now I've gained half of my weight loss back. I also just got a letter from my surgeon's office stating that greater than 50% of band patients are having revisions due to ineffectiveness of the band, food intolerance, band slipping, and heartburn/erosion. I'm pretty sure I have all of those things. I'm a little nervous about a new surgery but I can't live the way I have been living anymore. -
Lap Band Revision to the Sleeve
AmandaC86 replied to breprih's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I also had the band in 2009 and initially lost 80 lbs. I then had issues with food tolerance and band erosion therefore had the band removed in 2015. I know had gained weight back to where I was before the band. I met with my surgeon about revision and have a nutrition appt tomorrow but I am nervous to do a permanent surgery just like you. -
I have noticed lately that my carb count is high even when I try to make wise Protein choices. My diet consists of Protein shakes, greek yogurt and cottage cheese. I need to move away from these, at least in part. I am not good at cooking... I hate it. I am on a mission this evening to shop for quick go-to protein items that are low in carbs. As a band-to-sleeve revision, my weight loss is much slower than my roommates (went to Mexico on same date). Also, I have hypothyroidism and I just want to ensure success! I am down 32lbs in 3 months and have 45 to go to goal. Suggestions please!!

Revision due to Reflux and scared!!
RhondaHigdon replied to bajankat's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes, I'm on track for bypass sometime in November. I have my endoscopy still to do next week. However, I have had 5-cections, a tubal reversal, and a complete hysterectomy, so that's a total of 7 abdominal surgeries. I am so worried about lesions/scar tissue in small intestines making the bypass a problem. Anyone else have any of these issues that has any input? Id greatly appreciate any information. -
Who has had their band the longest?

My doc said just to take Multivitamin, 1000mg sublingual B-12, and 1000mg of calcium citrate a day. I don't believe we lose the ability to absorb Vitamins and minerals from food the way Gastric Bypass patients do. I didn't start the vitamins until I was back on solid food, so I've never tried anything like the gummy vitamins. I've always taken tablets or pill form.

Serious Stomach Acid Issues Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery
weightnomore replied to cherice95403's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have had problems with lots of acid myself. I had a hiatial hernia repair at the same time as my sleeve. I had an upper GI this morning and the technologist said I have severe reflux. My doctor said that one fix for this is to convert the surgery to a bypass. I couldn't believe it and said "No Way". I guess if you have no pylorus te acid leaves the stomach more readily. But another surgery? and a bypass???? -
Freaking out a bit!
Jaffa replied to Grateful Heart's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Its all relative. This is the BEST surgery with the best stats. Thats just the way it is. I agree weight regain is ALWAYS a concern. But this one has the least regain. You may indeed regain some weight after losing a lot, but it will be relatively little and it will be extremely easy to take it right back off. Right now you probably only notice weight gains of 10-30lbs. After the surgery and weight loss, you will notice gains of 1-3lbs and you will have an extremelly effective tool at taking it right back off. Yes, you can eat around your weight loss surgery and sabotage yourself, so if that happens it is time to see a head doctor to help. Bypass, has really given WLS a bad perception, since so many had it and regained, but this surgery doesn't have nearly the same regain statistics as the old ones. -
Serious Stomach Acid Issues Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Sharon Baugher Nickell replied to cherice95403's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have a hiatal hernia that was not fixed at the time of my sleeve that my doctor now thinks is causing reflux/pain problems. Don't know why he didn't fix it at the time of surgery, and said something about converting to a bypass but I do not want that. (I am only 6 weeks out as it is). I have always had GERD/gastritis that was well-controlled as long as I took Nexium daily. That all changed after the surgery, however. Two Nexium daily plus one zantac do not seem to control the problems. I do not have so much burning in my throat as I have a pressure sensation in my chest and my stomach always hurts, burning, gnawing, raw feeling. Hurts after I eat almost anything. I had a scope last week that showed the hiatal hernia, no ulcer. Does anyone know if a hiatal hernia can cause this type of pain and can the hernia be fixed after you have been sleeved without converting to a bypass. Thanks. -

I think I am a bariatric pal forum stalker

I think I am a forum stalker too. Do we need to join another support forum for stalkers? ????I think I need to start stalking in the bypass surgery forum because the doc thinks I may be a better candidate for it???? -
I know that everyone is different.

Day 3 or 4, I felt really good with the exception of stomach muscular pain (like overworked ab muscles). After 7 years lap band, I had the band to sleeve revision which may be why for my speedy recovery. Decided to add this: I did have trouble feeling hungry and that bothered me, but after day 16 when my stomach swelling went down, the fake hunger feelings dropped off. You didn't fail and shouldn't feel bad about what's happened, the procedure failed you and not the other way around. :-) I've had a rough experience with the sleeve, started out @ 347, was down to 331 the day of surgery and couldn't get under 314 for months. Even now I can't manage to break 300 and it's been almost 6 months since surgery. I didn't tell anyone I was having WLS except my daughter and a very few close friends- 2. Even so, I've been embarressed by the miserable failure I feel my surgery has been and wish nobody knew. Who wants to have weight loss surgery and still be fat?! lol Because of complications with the sleeve, it has been recommended to me to have gastric bypass as a second step or even duodenal switch. My head is still swimming and I haven't made a decision but I can tell you this much- if I decided to go through another procedure, I wouldn't tell anyone. When you feel like a failure the first time after all the hard work, positivity and high expectations, it can make you super wary to talk about it the second time. Good for you for making the right decision for you and taking control back of your weight loss journey!

I am 2 weeks out from my band to sleeve revision. I had a lot of problems like you. However, it was a much easier decision for me because my insurance paid for it. I am 15# from goal at the time of my revision. I couldn't live with the band any longer and I certainly didn't want to gain all my weight back. I did a lot of research and found that band to sleeve revisioners are over all quite happy with there decision. From my experience in just 2 weeks, it is like night and day. No more puking, no more acid reflux, no more being very tight in the morning, no more pain while eating! I wish you the best in your decision. I'm glad I did it. Shelli

So my WLS started when I found out I had PCOS. Basically it was a wake up call that if I ever wanted kids then I needed to get healthy and be pro-active. Fast forward 1.5 years. I had my gastric bypass 9/30/14 and am down from 330lbs to roughly 220lbs. Huge success for 8ish months but still not exactly where I want to be. Right now I am struggling with the "I am about to be 30 and still havent had a baby" phase of my life. Logically I know I have a ways to go before my journey is complete and it is recommended to wait minimum 18 months before getting pregnant, but the depression this realization has caused is stalling me and setting me back. Its just really hard to reconcile what your head wants and knows versus what your heart is yearning for. I dont really feel like I can express these feelings to anyone else and I am not sure if I am alone in this but to at least feel like I can put it out there, somewhere... well that helps some.

Had my Roux n Y Gastric Bypass 8.5 years ago. Initially lost 140lbs. Last 5 yrs put on 30, but have held steady for 2. Hip problems keep me from walking as much as I used to walk. (3-5 miles a day). I am going to try the pouch reset, has anyone out there tried it? Thoughts? Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

I have this, it's scar tissue, and more than others because mine was a revision from a band. The eating may place relieving weight on the area. You may want the internal scaring cleared up.
