    Help

I had my revision from VBG to bypass on May 6th. I went in at 287, I gained during surgery 296 (I get it was fluid) but still stuck at 277. And the scale really has not moved in over 2 weeks. Anyone else having this issue? I am over a month and thought it would be coming off faster than that. I do my water and protein. Can not walk a lot due to knee issues.

    Pre-surgery

I am 2 days before surgery but I have mixed emotions. I am nervous because I worry about complications because I am a VSG to RNY revision. But I am excited because I am one step closer to starting this new journey

    Scared Band-Less...

Oh God, Okay, so first I suppose I should give a little background about me.... I decided on 11/4/08 that I would look into Lab Band per the request of my pcp. My aunt and I decided to do this together as her endo has been after her to have the surgery for a year. Had our first appt at NEMC in Boston 12/15/08. They said banding wouldn't be an issue and thought it was a good choice because of my weight and blossoming health issues (high BP, chlesterol, diabetes). I was 242 at that visit. They told my aunt to think about bypass, because of her age, the amount of meds she's on to regulate the same problems I have and she is a heart pt. too. I went in last weds 1/14/09 for Immersion Day, where you meet with everyone and their grandmother (except for the surgeon). The shrink used the same arguments for the band to tell me to think about bypass! My aunt, they still said consider the bypass, which she is. Needless to say, I am a little wigged. The bypass to me is SOOOOOOO totally different than a band. Its like rewiring your insides versus sticking a scrunchie on your stomach. Plus there are more complications to think about, dumping syndrome, food intolerances.....and (I apologize if I offend anyone) I dont think I am sick enough or large enough for the bypass. Again, I dont mean to offend....I just think of the bypass as something more drastic for larger people with more health issues than I have.... So I need some advice, input, and HEEELLLLPPPPP!!!!! In a perfect world I would lose 100 lbs. Realistically, I'd like to shoot for 80-90 from my highest weight of 242. I know it will be harder with the band. But I am already down 10 lbs!!! Do I want to end up not losing weight and have to have a revision to the bypass? HELL NO!! Do I want to lose too much weight and look emaciated? NO THANKS! Do I like that its harder to lose with the band? NOPE Do I like the idea of rewiring my insides? NO WAY JOSE! But I guess I like the idea of working harder to lose the weight better than I like the idea of rewiring my insides and all the extra risks and side effects of a bypass...... Any help, questions, input, ideas or other thoughts are greatly appreciated!!!!

    Smoking---Yikes!!!

Gina, I can completely relate, and I am not the best person to talk to about it. I've quit and gone back to smoking 3 times since having my revision. The main concern with smoking post-sleeve is ulcers. Even though, I haven't had any issues in 18 months since going back to smoking. I wish I could tell you some fabulous story, or remedy, but smoking for me is the one thing that is my horrible habit that I can not kick. I've tried Wellbutrin, and I dropped down to 119lbs, lost my appetite, it made me manic, and overall was a horrible experience for me. Chantix is expensive, and not covered by our insurance. The patch, gum, lozenges make me a total nut job so I have to do it cold turkey, and for that to work, I'd have to be on an isolated island with an IV of Moscato, and tons of hot cabana boys to keep me occupied. Hypnosis is the one thing I haven't tried.
  5. Hello, I am trying to find a psychologist for my psych eval, and a nutritionist. My surgeon is Dr. Juarez in Phoenix, so they don't have a list of psychologists and nutritionists outside of Maricopa County. I'm getting a revision, and they won't do it in Tucson. I would be so grateful if anyone has the name of someone who does psych evals, and nutrition counseling in Tucson or Cochise County. The directory on my insurance company website is awful to use, and if I call the insurance company, they just offer to walk me through the web site. Thanks so much!!! Kristy

    Scott & White?

Hi Robin, It's nice to see someone close to home on here. I currently live in Lorena, but I'm from Waco. Have you had your surgery? I am waiting for approval for revision from lap band to rny. Since I had my original surgery elsewhere, S&W wouldn't take me when I started having problems with the band. I couldn't even get help at Hillcrest where I work. If you need a buddy close to home, please message me. I hope all is well with you

    Denver area?

Does anyone know how I would go about finding a reputable and experienced VSG surgeon in the Denver, CO area? I currently have a lapband, but am considering revision to a vertical sleeve. My band surgeon is very new at doing VSG I believe, because in the past he has always said he only did Band or RNY (as does his website), but today he told me he does VSG but only recently. I don't know if I should stick with him or if I should look for someone more experienced, and how to even begin looking? Thanks!

New senior member just saying Hi

UPDATE: Just fillin' you guys in.. From everything I'm hearing, it seems like I probably won't lose the 200 lbs. I want to lose. I guess I'll be lucky if I lose 100 lb. I keep going round and round in my mind what to do. Truthfully, now with a more complete picture, I think the sleeve would be my best bet. Chances are good that I'd lose a substantial amount with the sleeve, and if I needed a revision, I could easily convert into the bypass. That said, Medicare, does not cover the sleeve yet. It's anyone's guess as to when they will -- anywhere from 18 months to 5 years. I don't have the time to wait. I am too scared to have the bypass, because of my age, prior history of a heart attack and co-morbidities. I'm sure I will pass all of the pre-op tests with flying colors. But I'm afraid to be on the table for the length of time it takes to do a bypass and the fact that it's 5x more dangerous than any other procedure. Since I had extensive abdominal surgery to remove my ovarian cancer, they don't know if scarring will be an issue that will force an open surgery vs. laparoscopic. And while I'm not having any heart problems, who knows what will happen during surgery. My doc tells me I'm already at a higher risk for pretty much everything, including a pulmonary embolism. Now all I have to do is find the right doc. My doc is probably the best and most experienced surgeon around, but I do not like his support staff (particularly the P.A. who will be doing the fills). Right now I'm on the medically supervised diet and doing quite well, to my surprise I've already lost 12 of the 20 pounds I need to drop without much effort. I'm not actually following the "diet" just being practical about what and how much I eat. Best wishes and healing thoughts for all you newbies. I'm not sure where I'm gonna hang out on this board -- but I will be popping into the 60s for sure. Kate
  10. Not commonly done but one of the only things ive seen performed a few times at my hospital was a lap band over a bypass. Would depend on your insurance and how your surgeon feels about that. But getting a lap band over a bypass is a realistic possibility. I mean surgeons dont like to do lap bands because they frequently have issues and you need to be on top of appointments with them. But if weight and cormorbidities are a problem its one of the safer options. Sure bands arent the greatest, but I think getting a revised bypass is much more dangerous. And the band does work in a synergy kind of way with the bypass. Couldnt tell you how outcomes are long term though I would absolutely avoid any kind of self pay scenarios since you have a history of a bypass . If you have any complications from the bypass (which is a real possibility) you dont want insurance companies using your self pay surgery as an excuse to get out of paying for it.

  12. While I found my surgery buddy here, you can also post in the Bariatric Pal Team MX Facebook group if you are looking for someone to buddy up with. You are still in good hands even if you have to go it alone, and they will attend to your every need while you are there, but it is nice to have someone to go through the experience with you. Letter approval

I am having revision and my Doc wrote a letter of exception. I didn’t have to go through six month nutrition classes. I am low bmi of 33, 5’1 at 183.6 pds. Bcbs called to tell me I was approved for 1 night stay and so excited to finally get this band removed and switched to the sleeve. My insurance was like, we approved it but what’s your weight and are you still diabetic? Which I am but you would think they can see my history since they are my insurance... I had so many complications with the band. My surgery date is 12/31, so crazy but so happy that I will start the new year on the right foot.

What did you tell your kids?

I told my son everything. He's kind of one of those gross, everything about the body intrigues him, kids. So, when it came time to revise to VSG, I allowed him to watch a youtube.com video on the procedure. At first, I showed him the "cartoon" animated video and then asked if he wanted to see the real surgery. Of course, being the gross 10 year old boy he is, he was game to watch the gory surgery. He thought it was awesome. I think it really depends on each child's maturity level. My son and I are extremely close so it made things easier to explain to him. I did tell him I was doing it to lose weight, but only because we have family members and friends that had the band and RNY performed so he was already familiar with weight loss surgery in general.
  16. Tough decision you have make, and I sure can understand why you feel so confused and frustrated! Sorry for all the stuff you've been going through. I hope you can get some answers here that will help you with your decision. This is just a general, overall statement from observations I've made after three years of personal reading and listening to people in support groups. Of course, there are undoubtedly many people who have had the LB for years with no complications. It seems though that more people, overall, have issues with their LB than those who have GB or sleeve. And it also seems that there are a lot of LB people who later end up doing a revision to either sleeve or GB. Again, this is just what I have observed. Just FYI, I've had sleeve for 3 years, never any complications, and best decision I ever made. There is some pretty good scientic data out there now on the sleeve, and it is very favorable. I think the whole "stretching sleeve" thing has become this crazy urban legend. If sleevers are following the eating plan and lifestyle, there is no such thing. Good luck to you and let us know how you're doing.
  17. I think my subject line says it all!!! Today marks my one month band to sleeve revision. I could not feel better. I was 177.4 on surgery day and today I'm 162.2. Yippee!!!!!!! I have about 20 more pounds to go. I know the hard part is ahead but boy, do I feel awesome. For some reason the surgery has given me an extreme burst of energy- I haven't felt this good in years. I've been working my bees and just found out they are doing so well I had to add a top box today. Yey!!! So my lovely girls are growing, I'm getting smaller, it's spring in the South and life could not be better. Just wanted to share and wish everyone a great day and best of luck with their journey. Oh!!! I should add that this weekend I'm going on a overnight kayaking trip down the Peace River to look for fossils with my 12 year old daughter. I haven't slept in a tent in over 15 years... I must be crazy. So if you don't hear from me after Monday... I have fallen prey to a gator or exhaustion. I'm telling you, this surgery has made me (crazy) superwoman. I hope it lasts!!! Welcome to the forums. There are a lot of people on here who have revised from the band to the sleeve and have had success. There's actually a separate board for those that have that type of surgery. On the main page, scroll down and you'll see it. You'll have success with the sleeve. Just follow what your surgeon and dietician tell you, and you will be successful!

    Any other 5'5 ers?

I just had bypass on 8/12. I was 285 the day of the surgery and my bmi was something around 46. Bypass is the golden standard and I strongly believe there are fewer side effects like severe reflux and weight regain. It is your decision, bypass is not for everybody, but I heard of many people having revision from sleeve to RNY. Good luck!!
  23. I'm having a revision. I had my sleeve 3 years ago. Im getting bypassed In a week. Is week good to stop smoking pot? I'm nervous because I smoke but i stopped i have week

    Port Size

Are you on the small side? That may be why the doc chose the small. Most docs choose the regular size because most of us have a thick fat pad over the belly/ribs and they want to make sure they can access the port center. I have lost most of my wt and will have a port revision to the smaller port so it doesn't stick out the way the bigger one does. Best wishes. Mimi
