    hernia development

I would get a second (and even third,) opinion on any kind of revision surgery. Partly due to the added complication in doing revisions, and in the wider range of underlying problems that may create the need for a revision. Different doctors have different experiences (even if they are equally "experienced") which can give them a different perspective in solving a problem. On these forums, we certainly see some come through who have hiatal hernias repaired post sleeve; there is also wide variation with amount of sleeve experience that surgeons can have, given that it has been gaining popularity rapidly, so many surgeons are not as experienced with sleeves as they are bypasses. This leaves many in the situation of not really knowing how to correct a problem that occurs with a sleeve, and instead stay within their comfort zone and revise to a bypass instead of fixing it. So, in short, you may be in a situation where some surgeons can correct the hernia fairly easily while others would have difficulty, or it may be something that no one can correct without doing the revision. We forum lackeys can't make that judgement, but that is what second opinions are for. Good luck,

    silly question

I stayed one night, but my surgery went super smooth with no complications.
  3. With no complications, you should be fine - just drink all your liquids, and put your feet up, and nap. The big risk is dehydration.
  4. Hi, I am just beginning my journey! My doctor is Francis Teng, MD, out of Las Vegas, and I have been following his work for almost 6 years. I have my consultation on the 15th, seeing the psychologist and nutritionist next week. My insurance is not paying, so I'm doing it all myself, with a little help from my mother. LOL! But, I have a 12 year old daughter who is at weight loss camp now and she has been there 2 weeks and has lost over 13 lbs so far. I want to set a good example for her, because she is doing it for me. I have entertained the idea of weight loss surgery for years now. My brother had the bypass done last year and has lost over 150 lbs. He had so many health problems so the surgery probably saved his life. I was set on having the same surgery when I learned more about the lap band. I like the idea of losing slowly, no cutting, less complication/risk, among other things, so I decided to go this route. I have about 140-150 lbs to lose. I would be ecstatic with 100. I found this site yesterday and I'm looking forward to learning from everyone here.

    1week post op

Hey, A week ago I got a gastric sleeve like the first 4 days I was in a lot of pain. I have a low tolerance for pain, the gas pain was sharp and made me miserable and the surgical incision spots were sore. When I look at my stomach I think it looks more ugly then it looked before. I feel hideous and feel like I’m not gonna get results because all I’m doing is drinking water and sip on a protein shake and take my vitamins. I’ve already been tempted to eat unhealthy foods. The other day I chewed some chicken but I spit it out because I’m not trying to cause myself complications. I guess I’m just venting I also feel weird in the sense that I’m waiting to see myself skinny. Is it normal to feel like? How did y’all feel your first few weeks. Did you have doubts were u happy were u tempted to eat crap? Did u eat it how did you feel?
  6. I'm still pre-op, but I'm 51 years old and my feeling is that I've been eating for more than 50 years and I've eaten everything I need to eat. I've been struggling with my weight since I was NINE, and although I've never been huge (never even reached 200 lbs, but then I'm only 5'2"), I have worried and fretted about every bite that went into my mouth, and every ounce on the scale, for more than FORTY YEARS. So when I found out this surgery was available to me, I jumped on it like a drowning man jumps on a lifeboat. Honestly, I can't imagine anything about the restrictions of this surgery being any worse than what I've been through up to now. Even if I were restricted to Protein shakes and chicken soup for the rest of my life (which I know I won't be), for me that would be a fair trade-off for being slim and healthy. As for complications, I know they happen but if they do I will get through them and it will still be worth it. I guess everybody has to do the cost-benefit analysis for him- or herself. For me, it's a no-brainer. I just envy those of you who have the opportunity to do it while you're still very young!
  7. Hi All! I have asked loads of food questions but is it just me or did anyone else kinda obsess over all the food and big meals you are going to miss out on? I keep thinking I will be miserable watching everyone around me eat whatever they like and I will be living on Protein shakes and Soup the rest of my life. I worry about complications and leaving my husband and 2 very young kids alone. I worry about having the surgery and waking up and thinking what the hell have I just done. I have asked it before but, does anyone regret having the sleeve surgery? I have searched all over the forums and I cannot find anyone so far who regrets their choice. Nor have I been able to actually find anyone who has dies from it. (In my mind, I'm sure I would be the first) I could use a little reassurance. Surgery date is 2 weeks from today.
  8. HI there, my name is Kari and I am 24 yrs old. I was banded on November 3, 2006 by Dr. Carl Sunby in Madison, WI. I had some complications and was unable to get a fill until this past monday March 11th. The biggest complication was that the larger incision got infected, and I mean infected. My Dr was worried that the band had been exposed to the air because you could see all the way through to my inside (lovely i know) and if that were the case there was a possibility for internal infections and all that. It took almost 3 months of packing wet gauze into the incision and keeping it all clean for it to finally heal. Unfortunately I have a really ugly scar now but I guess it could have been much worse. I have had a really frustrating time because my Dr kept telling me not to do too much exercise especially nothing abdominal and so I haven't really lost much weight since my surgery. But like I said I finally was able to get a fill a couple of days ago, which was also fun because with all the scar tissue he couldn't feel the port so we had to schedule another appointment to try it under the xray machine, so hopefully I am on the right track now. I am happy to be apart of this website and hopefully will be able to meet some new people. Good luck to you all and take care

    Vitamins

And I went back to my prenatals, small, only need one a day, a little water in the mouth, toss it in and down she floats! Nice, easy and it's over until tomorrow! Loathed Flintstones taste, hated grinding pills, thought Bari-Melts weren't all that melty, felt like flavored sand in my 👄, a complication I did not need. Only concession I still make is dissolving my big White Carafate into a slurry in a medicine cup and drinking that.

    Any answers???

Good morning all, just a quick question. Are there any sleevers here, (other then my buddy Tiffy, how is sprout?) who have been out now 2-3 years? How's it going with ya'll now? anyone gained back a bunch of weight? anyone have complications like strictures or anything like a closure due to scar tissue and needing a stent to reopen the "stomach"? Brittle bones and breakages? Just questions, but very valid ones. Hope to hear from someone soon!

    Struggling

Relax! You've had major surgery with some complications. You are being pro-active and trying to get all your ducks in a row before you do anything too bad. It'll be ok. Don't dwell on the past; you can't change it anyway. Go back to your NUT's guidelines and log everything that goes into your mouth. When you want to cheat, call a friend, walk if it's not raining, do chair exercises. (https://www.workingmother.com/11-quick-chair-exercises-that-work-as-well-as-going-to-gym) There are also some on youtube. Hope this helps!

    Going crazy

Girl, I understand completely. I realized today that it is 1 week away, too,and I became very anxious. When they called to schedule my preadmission testing, I freaked out. I am getting very anxious. I am the sole provider for my family and am really struggling. My insurance isn't covering the procedure, so I don't even know if my life insurance would pay if something were to happen. At the same time, I know it is very unlikely for there to be a serious complication, and I need to do this for my family so I can be more active with them. I also need to do it so I can maintain the work I do for the next 20 years in order ot continue to provide for them. We need to do this, we will do this, and it will all be ok! That is my mindset right now! Ask again tommorrow after my last preop appt and preadmission testing and I am may be freaking out again.

    SERIOUSLY!!! considering the BAND!!!

honestly it was the best thing i could of ever done before...it not painful...at least for me it wasn't...its just a big life style change... you have to be prepared to eat less..eat healthier and work out (you don't have to but if you want to get the maximum results i suggest it) When you get banded there is about a 6 week recovery in sense of it wont be filled...so after a week or so your going to feel hungry and your going to be able to eat more than you will probably want to...Once you get your first fill thats when it really all begins. I just got my first fill on 12/2. He filled me 7.5 which was prolly a lil too much but i'm working with it. Every meal i eat is centered around protein(chicken, turkey, ham, cheese, fish, etc) i do not drink with my meals...makes your hungry faster, i also find if i do drink right after it actually hurts a bit...i can eat about 1/4 cup at a sitting...the goal is to eat 1 cup at a sitting...Of course there are certain foods people with the band should avoid but thats just more a matter of avoiding complications. I have chosen to mainly cut out sugar of my diet. i found it has been easy...your biggest thing to remember is to become creative in how you eat things...for example if you really like mayo on your sandwitch but can live w/o it i use either diojonaze or i used avacado's that are mashed up and spread it like a spread....its good and has a lot less calories...the surgery itself isn't bad at all....most of the time its same day...i arrived at the hospital at 6am...and left around 9pm that night...i had very minimal pain that night which i took a liquid pain pill my doctor prescribed for me...the only pains i had were from gas.... within 3 days after surgery i was eating creamy soups and egg salad...it was great....i can honestly say i myself was shocked how quick and easy of a recovery it was...
  14. Babybleuz, did you check out the band-day stories yet? It's a great thread that might be useful. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f178/surgery-day-stories-64287/ As far as my story. Yes, I had complications, which resulted in 2.5 days in the hospital. I am doing great now, other than my hormones are wacked out. I took two weeks vacation off and enjoyed every minute of it at home recovering. I have lost 40 pounds so far and have no regrets.

    Trying to find friends

Well dont be like me and ready e v e r y post of surgery complications. i have freaked myself out!!
  16. Thanks all. I'm not sure appeal is something I can do. It's a part of the policy my employer opted not cover when they negotiated the insurance. They offer Kaiser too, and was told they don't cover it there either. Here's the email from the benefits coordinator: We don’t cover it due to the other complications that can arise from this particular surgery which in turn can cause higher claims. I have been here for 8 years and we have never covered it. You are correct we are big on wellness and promoting healthy lifestyles for our teammates, we just promote through healthy eating and activity programs as well as screenings etc.
  17. Hi Iggy, I think you are spot on. I work for a Fortune 400 company $8.78B in annual revenue. I understood from the get-go that the company's decision not to cover WLS in any of its medical insurance offerings was purely negotiating a lower premium. I don't know what the statistics are, but I'd be willing to guess that there's a very small percentage of people who even consider WLS as an option, and likely those who consider it, give up after finding out that it's not covered. I would have, if I hadn't already gone through all the pre-op stuff. Having said that, it sounds like you may be a good resource to advise how I might proceed with at least giving my feedback to my employer's HR department. I've been thinking I would write a letter to the SVP of HR, opening with something like, "How many morbidly obese 80-year-olds do you know?" Probably not many. Then go into pointing out statistics, and finish up with urging them to reconsider their decision that was made a long time ago based on data that is probably 10 years old, relative to complications and their claim costs, vs. the benefit. I'm not afraid of doing that, but moreover, I hesitate to leave this in the hands of just one person. In other words, I feel like an executive both in and outside of HR should hear the information. How stupid would that be?
  18. When I had my surgery I was slow to the draw. I also had complications. But I stayed at the same weight for almost a month!!! During that time I was eating nothing. No shakes either. My body was rejecting everything. So how could I not eat for 4 wks and survive and not lose weight? Iv fluids first of all and second my body was in starvation mode. Eventually I lost weight about 6-10 lbs a week depending on my participation in exercise. Now almost a year later I am down 129 lbs. You will get there! Each journey is different.

    scared!

I had my pre-op clearance Monday, which I passed without any problem. I go back to see my surgeon for a second follow up on 8/29 and will have my surgery date set at that time, probably for the first week in October. Now that this is actually getting close, I'm scared out of my mind!! I'm a "what if", worst case scenario person. I am terrified of something happening and having a bad complication from the surgery. The surgeon felt that I'm an excellent candidate and I know by primary care doc wouldn't be on board if she was worried about it. Does anyone have any words of wisdom? Thank you in advance! Karen

    Acid reflux and banding

Hello.. I was banded 5/9/2013.. I am blessed to say I have had minimum to no complications I have been back to everyone of my check ups and have not had to have in adjustments I am down 43 pounds down and feel great. I am so happy I finally decided to get the surgery. My band is a blessing!!!! Tasha
  21. I am finally getting my band removed in June. I have had year after year of issues and am VERY happy to be DONE with the band. I want to revise to the sleeve... but my surgeon is not in favor of that. He recommends RNY. He said the success rate with the sleeve after banding is not as high as with revision to RNY. He cites scar tissue as the main reason... with RNY the portion of the stomach with scar tissue is removed. He also thinks the added tool of malabsorption is a big plus. I have decided to wait 6 months after removal before revising to another surgery. That is the length of time he recommended before he would consider a sleeve revision. I was positive I wanted the sleeve... now I am not so sure. Was anyone else pressured to choose RNY and still went forward with the sleeve and are happy they stuck with their gut? I initially lost 100 pounds with the band... regained because of complications. Then lost the 100 again after band re-positioning... regained because of complications again. I have been without fill now since Jan 2014 and am back to my pre surgery weight. I feel like the sleeve will work for me. I was able to work my tool... when IT wasn't malfunctioning. RNY scares the crap out of me. I have no major medical issues other than PCOS and sleep apnea. I have a 20 month old son and I need to be here for him.
  22. My story is similar to yours. My surgeon is very conservative too. I lost 100% ewl before complications after kids. Had my band out and asked my surgeon which would be better for me after band and he said I should do sleeve. Hope he is right bc doing surgery in June! Maybe get another option? I had heard the same things as you about sleeve being less successful but there are plenty of successful revisions on this board. What complications did you have?
  23. How do I find the UK room...I am new to this lol. I am going to Belgium because it is half the price. If I lived 20 miles away I would have qualified for NHS surgery but where I live now will only do if you have diabetes or other complications....BMI of 50 with no other health implications is too healthy so am paying for it myself.

    Sleeve vs Bypass

My advice would be to write down all your health issues (gerd, diabetes, history of kidney stones, arthritis, etc ) and research the better procedure for each. In my case it was split between the sleeve and RNY. I would have gone with the sleeve but after further testing they found Barrett's cells so I had to go with RNY. Having said that, I seem to be able to eat anything (4 months out) and have had no complications so I'm happy with my decision. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. Hey there, I've read up on the prodeedure and went to a lap-band siminar last night, but the doctor wasn't that big of a help & seemed to flip through the slide shows like the place was on fire. And he's supposed to be one of the better doctors in Kansas City, MO. (Where I live) I really just need people to talk to and give me info on how the surgery went, any complications, how long before getting back to normal activity, etc. If you can fill me in a bit, I'd be most grateful. I hope to meet some new, friendly people on here that are going through the same thing as me. ~BabyBluez1982:confused:
