5 Months out!

Sorry I just got to reply. Was away with my daughter on a Civil Air Patrol mission. I just started walikg, I started small. I walked a mile, then mile and a half the following week. Eventually I was walking 3 miles. Then I started to jog-slowly. I used my music as a guide. Walk a song, jog a song, walk a song, jog a song. Then I started tryign to jog 1/2 mile straight. The next week 3/4. Add a little every week. I have a running body now who had Bypass 5 years ago. She really pushed me to go more, jog further, and encouraged me. Biggest thing I can say is just do it. I know it sounds cliche but our moto has been -"I can do anything for a 10th" which a 10th of a mile. You will feel the urge to go out and run once you start. I hated running when I started I was just going to walk but once I pushed myself out of that comfort zone and just decided I'm doing this for me and noone else I just went for it and got addicted. The couch to 5k is a great app. I use Nike runners app because it tracks my previous runs and I can walk or run. The key is- for me at least- is be your own cheerleader and push yourself outside of that comfort zone. You can do anything you set your mind to. Will you be sore- yes!!! Will you die- no!!! But the sense of pride you get from doing these small races means way more to me than how much weight I have lost. I no longer focus on pounds- they will come. I focus on miles and time. Once I took my mind off the scale I found I was less stressed about my diet and how I am doing post surgery. I focus on the miles and time and gettign those in and the diet kinda fell into place afterwards. If you eat crap or not enough protein your runs suffer and you can feel it. Now that I count miles and improving my time I keep my protein up and my diet looks good. I only weigh every 2 weeks now. I use to weigh 3-4 times a DAY!!!! It stressed me out!! Now I focus on how my pants fit, how much better my time and distance is getting and when I get on the scale it is only to make sure I'm still going in the right direction- which it will be because I'm burning a shitload of calories. I did get advice from my surgeons office and the dietician to make sure I ate properly with the increased activity.

Lifestyle Changes

I agree with what Kindle said above. I am 14 months post surgery and I chose the sleeve because I wanted to continue to live a normal life. I wanted to continue to eat many of my favorite foods and not have to worry about malabsorption, dumping syndrome, throwing up or any of the other side effects I hear about more often with gastric bypass and the lap band. I was able to reach my goal weight within a year and its amazing how certain foods don't even appeal to me anymore. I don't even crave soda let alone worry about overeating anymore. I think there's no perfect choice though. It takes research in finding the best choice for you. I didn't start out with a high BMI. I was 241 pounds at my highest at 5'7" tall. If I had a significant amount of weight to lose, I probably would have chosen the gastric bypass and dealt with the malabsorption and dumping. I don't understand the appeal of having to deal with Lapland shots/fills on an ongoing basis or throwing up if you eat too much. I really don't feel like I've had surgery at this point. I have a new "normal" which I quickly adjusted to. Best decision I ever made.
4. Congrats on getting started!! I have Aetna, so they require a 3 month nutrition and diet program. I had a little bit of probs cause, long story, my husband had a heart attack and triple bypass at age 37 back in feb/March. I had a net gain during those 3 months. Aetna states U cannot have a net gain. And I had no weight for 2013. So I was denied. (July) Then i appealed - denied again. (Aug) I hired Lindstrom obesity advocacy (They were EXCELLENT!!) And was approved Oct 3rd!!! I started my first meeting was January 7th 2013. And my surgery is set for 2 days before!!! I'm so happy and even tho it took a while, it was worth it. The denial definitely hit me hard and the next denial was even worse. But it lit a fire in me that I wanted this and I had to get real serious whether or not this was for me. And it is!!! The denials made me get my head together and with lots of family and friends support I have fought thru and here I am!!!! So the whole process took me a year, a friend of mine, who I went thru the whole process with, was sleeved on aug 11th. So I am only a little behind. Now is my time!! Any questions let me know and good luck!! Keep in touch!
5. Hello group, I just wanted to let you all know that on 3/3/15 I had gastric bypass and I could not be happier or feel better! Since Tuesday, I have lost total of 18 lbs. With a grand total weight loss(including the weight I loss pre-op)of 49lbs. After few days, the results are incredible. I know everyone is not the same, but moments after waking from surgery I was up waking about. Though I had incision pains, I felt like a million bulks. Though at the time, it could have been the anesthesia talking . But really, I was walking about on the hospital floor feeling great. After being released, I've taken short walks, trying to be careful not to over exert myself, because yesterday I did and it was not fun. The only real uncomfortable part of the surgery for me has been the gas; that's no joke. But most of that has moved and I feel much better. I am so grateful that God has given me the second opportunity on life and health. For all of those pre-op. I know there are worries, I had my own and still have some, but nothing beats the feeling of knowing that this part of your life is changing for the better. I'm so excited for what the months and the years have ahead. This is the first time in my adult life I have looked positively towards the future with anticipated hope and expectation.

New here...

Is your question that you are worried about malabsorption issues? I would be more concerned with sleeve issues such as heartburn and not losing enough weight. That's why I chose the rny. I figured if I'm going o do this, it will be once, no revisions for me. I chose the surgery that provides the most weightloss. A lot of bad stuff has been coming out about the sleeve in terms of results. I think with the sleeve you need to have much more willpower. The bypass is a lot harder, nearly impossible for some, to cheat on. My best friend had bypass and her husband the sleeve. She lost 170 pounds in one year. He lost 70 pounds and gained back 35 so only a 35 pound lost. He can and could eat around the surgery the whole time. She had dumping and major restriction. Given she was more motivated but he clearly needed a stronger tool to help with his weightloss. I don't think her really made the choice to lose weight and she did. But statistically people with sleeves don't lose as much. People with rny do get Vitamin issues along the way. Not everyone, but it happens. You have to commit to taking the pills for life. I feel it's worth it to get the health benefits of weightloss even if I have to have Iron transfusions some day. I was going to end up diabetic so I would have had issues anyway. The sleeve can give you heartburn and many end up with a revision. I didn't want two surgeries

Issues/weight gain...

Hi Allie, My situation is very similar to yours- banded quite a while, too-tight fill, ignoring the symptoms- thats me! I didn't have the 2nd stomach thing, but part of my lower stomach slipped above the band, making it larger and also causing the reflux problems. I had an unfill and it corrected itself, got another fill about a year later, and 6 weeks after that, the reflux started again. I was unfilled, it corrected itself and here I am. I have a small fill, which helps some, but I keep waiting for the reflux to start again. My surgeon has said that if it happens again, I have a couple of options- have my band repositioned, removed or convert to a gastic bypass. At this point, I'm not sure what I would do, but I'm very, very frustrated. My highest weight was 380, 330 at banding, 225 at the lowest and now I'm back up to 275. I just want reliable, predictable restriction. When its working, its WONDERFUL and I lose weight easily. It just doesn't seem to be working for me. Good Luck! Melissa

Kissing the Band Bye-Bye! Yes!!!

I got the band 3 years ago and researched it for 9 months before I actually went for the surgery. Back then, great things were promised with the band. Since that time, studies are showing that the least amount of weight is lost with the band and that people are increeasing reporting weight gain not to mention complications. I did not wake up one morning and decide to go for revision surgery. I had to look at all the weight loss surgeries available and then determine which one was right for me. After making the decision to have a sleeve, I then had to research surgeons to find the best one skilled in that procedure. I will not be flying into Mexico. I'm flying into CA and then being driven to the hospital which is not in the part of Mexico "in the news." I don't need more time to think about this because I took the time and am at peace with the revision surgery, the surgeon, and the hospital. I am very sorry that your surgeon would not do the surgery you wanted. I would not allow a surgeon to tell me what he would or would not do. I'm paying the surgeon. If I don't get what I am paying for, I look for someone else. Eleven pounds in 5 weeks is very good and I hope you continue to have success.
9. Can anybody confirm whether you are allowed to consume any alcohol ever again if you have a gastric bypass please, as my friends are telling me you can't? Kindest Regards
Lucii24
Sent From Samsung Galaxy SIII Using RNYTalk
10. Hi Diddle! I love reading your posts! I'm new to this so I don't always know how to post or comment, but here we go. The little protien bullets you talked about getting at Sam's Club...do you know the name of them, and the other thing is the Atkins shakes. Are they just called shakes or something else, and what is the best flavor? I start my Protein shakes on Tuesday for my surgery on the first. I'm not young at almost 58, and my surgery will be an open revision, but you know what...it's really my last chance to get rid of this weight. You inspire me. I was sad to read about the loss of your mother. I lost my mom about a year and a half ago. I still miss her and always will. If I can be of any help to you feel free to ask. What state do you live in? I'd love to find a buddy around here to partner with. Any suggestions? Kristen

whats happened to me

Have you had any fills? The band is a tool to help you lose weight. Like the gastric bypass you can stretch the pouch is you overeat. You are the first that I have heard that the band isn't working. May be it is a defective band? I was just banded August 29th and I have no fill until October and I know that the band is here..believe me. I didn't chew something so well the other day and felt it big time. The band 's purpose is to cause you to feel full on smaller portions longer. NOt only will you have to change your eating habits, you also have to exercise too. Have you changed your diet? Do you exercise? What has your doctor said about this because it does not sound right to me. You should have lost something on th liquid phase alone. Did you do the liquid phase and follow all the instuctions post-op? Some people lose during the 4-6 weeks post op because of the food restrictions. what was your diet like after surgery? I really would like to know the answers to these questions because you have piqued my curiostiy. You are the first I have encountered where the band did not restrict. Thank you for posting. Dee Dee

Cycling Nutrition question

This sounds like a question for Chef Woody. Chef Woody was a restaurant chef who underwent RNY gastric bypass surgery. He then incorporated his knowledge of WLS into specific recipes. After surgery he became an avid bicycle enthusiast. He worked is way up in competitions and rode non-stop from one side of Indiana to the other. He said when he reached the other side of the state, he was totally out of energy and collapsed. I suspect he would know the answer. He probably told it to me but I forgot. He moved away and now lives in Florida. Here is a link to what I believe is his website. http://www.chefwoody.com

Frustrated!!! Argh!

You made the right decision. I am ready for restriction too. Bypass has way to many complications that could occur. Hang in there!
14. Some of you may already know that I am 3.5 years post sleeve and have been pending a revision surgery for a while now. I have spent the past several months doing research and several tests to decide which surgery will be most appropriate for me and we have finally decided to go through with the SADI surgery and I have a date in early August. I am a bundle of emotions. I am a great deal more nervous this time around. I think it’s partially because this is a riskier procedure witb more serious side effects but I think it’s also because I am taking this a lot more seriously this time. I am really afraid of failure. I feel like I already failed once so what if I go through all of this only to not lose or lose and gain it all back again like last time. The surgeon said that the sleeve is a good fit for a lot of people but obesity is really complex and some just need a more aggressive surgery with greater metabolic change to be successful. He said his patients have had good results with the SADI-S and the sleeve to SADI revision. So i am also really hopeful and excited that it will be different for me this time. I don’t think I have totally wrapped my mind around it yet though because I am not counting down the days and wanting it to get here sooner like I was last time. I’m kinda glad to have a few weeks to get there mentally.

Gasrtric Bypass after Gastric Banding???

Lee, Yes there are people who have moved on to gastric bypass surgery. Just a caution, weight loss is a journey and is not a quick fix. I also know lots of people who have had the bypass to only be back to where they were in the beginning. This process whether lap band, sleeve or bypass is about learning discipline, good habits and changing behavior. i realize that may not be a popular response on this site but it is true. We did not get fat over night and we are not going to get skinny over night. If you do decide to have the bypass surgery do it becasue it is the right thing for your health, not becasue you want to lose weight faster. Ok said my peace, I will shut up now. You can be successful, you can lose with the band, give yourself time before you rush into somehing else. Best of luck!

Flipped Port

Port revision surgery is a breeze. Mine flipped a couple of months ago and I had to have revision surgery. I was in and out in under 30 minutes and got a fill during that time as well. I went home within an hour after the surgery, felt great and went back to work the next day. The recovery is minimal and there is very little pain involved. I didn't even take tylenol. As for why they flip, no one knows. It just happens sometimes, thats all.
18. I saw Al Roker on another T.V. show (Not The Today show )He admitted to a weight gain of 20 pounds and he was working out with Oprah's personal trainer.....But I saw him this AM on the Today Show in a wet suit and bless his heart he looks like is struggling with more tha a 20 pound gain :-( I also noticed as he was walking he has a much more pronounced limp again. He had a hip replacement about 5 yrs ago and the extra weight is putting a real strain on that new hip ! It just proves that the Gastric Bypass is not sure proof either. I have a friend who is going to Jenny Craig again after having the G.B. and losing 120 lbs she kept it off for 4 yrs and it just started creeping back on as she was able to return to her old eating habits. She has gained about 80 lbs back and is very depressed ! She is NOW asking her surgeon for the Lap Band but he says it is not possible. Just my 2 cents, Joanne
19. I also suspect that maybe Star Jones has a lapband since she was so insistent that she never had gastric bypass. Just a thought... Janice

Pros and Cons

OK lemme think on that..... Pro's are easy ---- weight loss, more energy, clothes are fun again, "eat to live instead of live to eat" mentality is great Cons....well it was really hard at first - had to focus to learn to chew chew chew and eat the rights foods that wouldn't get stuck....I find it annoying when people would say "well you had surgery ___ months ago, why haven't you lost more?" as folks think the lapband is like the gastric bypass and you should get skinny in no time....but really, other than the occassional day that I feel ultra tight (which happens due to high humidity, female hormones, being dehydrated...) and I cannot manage to eat much, most of the time everything is great now, as I don't have to focus so much on chewing, etc. It IS different for everyone, though.....no two people are exactly alike....so you have to choose what is best for you. You will need to be diligent in eating the right foods, exercising, and getting your fills in order for it to work for you. Good luck! Kim

HI...Im out in Rockwall,Tx area

Maybe this will encourage you..... the coach on my daughter's volleyball team just had it done last Monday. I couldn't even tell he had surgery on Saturday. His wife had it too but it was fine on Wednesday and a revision from Lap band to sleeve and I could tell she had something done with her abdomen but didn't know what. I found out after the game. Everyone is different though. Determination plays a role too. Get up and walk as much as you can and you'll heal faster imo.
22. Washington is ridiculous. That's why I'm going to Denver. I saved 7000.00 by doing that when I had my band done. I will be going to Dr. Weaver for my revision if things work out. He charges a fraction of what you've listed here.

Hello ...... 36.6 BMI

Dave once you get to the correct fill level after a band, then you are supposed to be satisfied or full with about 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food. This is how you are able to lose weight, but you have to follow the rules. The band is made to be a lifetime implant, and many have had them for a long time, but sometimes there are complications where they have to be removed, that percentage is pretty small though. On the excess skin issue everyone is different, it depends on your age and the elasticity of your skin, one advantage to the band is you lose slowly and this allows your skin to retract better than very very rapid weight loss such as you have with a bypass surgery. I believe I remember reading that about 20% of band weight loss paitients need a plastic surgery after they are at their goal weight. Hope this helps. Debbie

Salad - 4 months out

Your body cannot digest the leafy greens like it use to..and besides, unless you're adding a ton of chicken to your salad, you're not getting the Protein that you need anyway. Salad for bypass patients is a waste of time and energy...Once you're over a year out you can "stomach" it a bit better...but even then it can get stuck and cause you issues. Best of luck! Surgery went well!

Congratulations. I had a RNY Gastric Bypass 11 months ago, and I remember the first few weeks were rough. There was so much complexity built into the meal plan, Protein supplements, medicine, Vitamins, Water intake, etc. But it does get better. I reached my happy state at 6 months, when everything started to work and all the problems melted away.
