Being a nurse, I too know all well how your nurse brain is in overdrive! Before my surgery the what ifs were insane. I also didn't have any other issues besides my weight and have 2 boys, 13 & 9. I had my surgery almost a week ago, 7/17 & I can tell you that hands down it is the best thing I did for myself & family. Sure it is a major surgery & you will be uncomfortable for awhile. I haven't had any real pain just soreness that gets better everyday. I am on liquids until the 31st & then move to purees. This will be the best thing you have ever done for your family...not just the losing weight but the time you are giving back to your family of having you around. Sometimes, I think WOW I had most of my stomach taken out but I will be here to see my kids grow up & get to be part of their lives not just a part of the backdrop because I can't join in due to my weight. Good luck and best wishes as you move forward. Wishing you a speedy recovery!!

Getting Discouraged
gaye jarvis replied to SleeveShelly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't get discouraged, you hit a stall so your body can catch up with your weight loss. I promise you will start losing again. I am 4 1/2 months out and just hit 90 lbs lost yesterday! This sleeve thing is awesome! Keep up the good work! -

Tooty replied to sallyjean's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've lost 13 lbs. and was banded on 3/31. I don't get a fill until 5/13. I may push it back a week or so, as I have had diarrhea for the past 5 days and still counting....:tt2: I definitely am ready for the first fill as up until the previous 5 days, I could eat anything and was having a hard time controlling my portions.... -
Vacation after Gastric Sleeve Surgery
lollienc replied to NavyMom6's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery June 2 and by mid week last week, my energy was basically back to normal. You may need to pass on some activities if you are still experiencing the after-surgery fatigue. Go no where without a well-chilled protein shake in a cooler and lots of water. You don't ever know what will be available and that should keep you comfortable. Have fun! -
How long after RNY were you able to eats a green salad? I'm only at 5 weeks but am looking forward to the day when I can have that much Fiber. I LOVE salads and miss them!! CandiH, Spring, TX_Surgery Date 4/22/13

I had surgery on 8/5. I am home, walking, drinking my fluids and Proteins. Minimal discomfort. Slight left shoulder pain still from C02. I found the cinnamon gas-x strips on Amazon before surgery and they work great. I tried diluted apple juice today and also had a Core Power light Protein Drink and my blood sugar was only 83 afterwards. I cried happy tears!!! I found Core Power light works best for me...it has stevia, monk fruit and some honey. It is 11 grams of sugar and comes in strawberry-banana or chocolate flavors. They sell at Walmart for $2.68 each in my area. I found some on line as well. I used these drinks during my pre-op diet phase and in 1 week, I lost 17 lbs. I added additional Protein Powder to them to boost the intake. I found the GNC pure edge products worked best because they had stevia also. Artificial sweeteners all cause migraines for me. Does anyone know if there are companies that do not use sucralose or aspartame as a sweetener in their sugar free chewables or liquids?

I took two weeks off as well. I was home and weak during week one, week two I flew to Las Vegas and walked all day at the SEMA show and cruzed the strip most days and nights. Eating and drinking is super important to follow but my energy and pain was fine after week 1. I never took pain killers once I left the hospital. It all depends how your body handles the surgery, but good luck!

I don't mean for this to sound like a dumb question but I have nothing to compare the sleeve surgery recovery too. If I had the surgery and was out of work for a week, and then had a second week off -- would I have any strength or ability to go on a family vacation during that second week? I don't have a ton of paid time off and we already have a vacation scheduled in the early summer. Just wondering if this was feasible at all.

From your experience how long was it before you feel like you can get up out of bed and start doing everyday normal things like going to the grocery store, cleaning the house, ect... ? My surgeon gave me 3 weeks off work so makes me wonder. My surgery is tomorrow so I have a lot of questions and things going thru my mind right now lol

Oh yeah.... I'm 6 months post op and that happened to me last week !!! The pain is not a "I'm too full pain" it is a pain like someone punched you in the stomach - it really hurts like hell !!!! Yep.... I learned my lesson.

In 12 weeks, I've hit my first big goal of losing 50 lbs! It has been a battle of discipline, but soooo worth it. After getting bloodwork done last week, Dr. says I'm not diabetic anymore and my blood pressure is normal! Also, I have stopped snoring, so I'm not using my CPAP regularly which has made me use less Ambien . Even with the pain, struggle, and stalls, I have to say it was ALL worth it. My journey is not over, and the next 25 lbs will be tough...but not impossible. Stay strong, stay focused, and stay positive!

You can take something with lots of fiber to bulk it up...like metamucil or something like that but you may want to call the doctors office and see what they recommend. I have heard and read that it is pretty common while you are on a liquid diet. I am a week out and while it's not constant it has been watery and is getting better the more soups and things that I eat.

I was banded on Monday 8/16, I was instructed to maintain a clear liquid diet for 1 week. I don't think that I can do it. I'm not hungry and nor do I have an appetite, but I can't sit another day and drink this stuff for 2.5 hours 3 times a day. I'm thinking of moving on to full liquids (yogurt only) to get my protien in. I honestly don't think it should be a problem because some surgeons only require a liquid diet, they don't say "clear". Further more, all day yesterday, I drank 1 oz every 5 to 10 mins rather than every 15 mins just to cut down the time. I think the only way I'll get my protien in is to mix it in my yogurt. Let me know what you think.

I think a lot of it depends on your situation. Some people go back to work after 3 or 4 days. I had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time and a lot of gas pain in my sternum. I went back to work after a week and a half and by two weeks I felt normal again with no problems. But by the 4th day most of the pain had subsided. Ice packs and heating pads were wonderful

7 weeks out, need your advice
shelbymooy replied to shelbymooy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I am now under 8 weeks, down to 196.9, BMI has changed from 35 to 32.8. I realized I was anxious about results, and have settled down. Thanks for your advice and opinions. -
I've been walking since day 1. Dr said 2 months I can start doing situps, pushups, etc. Currently no arm weights over 5 pounds. Low intensity cardio until 6 weeks (next Tuesday for me) & then increase as body allows.

Hey there! I was banded on the 22nd! I was really strict about the 2 oz. rule for the first 5 days, but today, I've been sipping from the carton! I woke up at 4AM famished and the hunger pangs haven't gone away! I was fine all week until tonight! 3 more days till mush! I never thought I'd be so excited about it! -
Thanks! Just seems like I should be seeing some progress. I guess its nerves too. Hard to believe next week already is surgery.

Vitamins/supplements
Bufflehead replied to Gina.marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That sounds like a money-making scam. I bought vitamins on my own. I had vitamins/minerals I was taking on my own before surgery: iron, B12, D3, folic acid. I generally buy those wherever I can get them cheapest. The important thing with iron is to not use time-release or slow-release formulas. I did use liquid iron for the first four weeks after surgery. Post-surgery I added in a multi-vitamin and calcium. For the first four weeks after surgery I did liquid forms of each (Wellesse - purchased through Amazon). After that, I switched to Trader Joe's chewable High Potency Multi-Vitamins and Citracal Petites (or the generic version my supermarket sells). For the first year after surgery I took a double dose of the multi's, then switched to a regular single dose. My surgeon's office also tried to sell me a huge, terribly over-priced vitamin package. I refused. I've had my labs drawn regularly since surgery and they have always been great. -
My husband told his boss that he'd be working from home for at least two weeks after my surgery. My surgeon and the nursing staff told us several times that even though this is an out patient surgery, it IS a major surgery and that I need to take it easy. When I told my surgeon that my son wanted to know how long we have to wait before we can go swimming. He very pointedly told me that there will be NO swimming or any other heavy / strenuous activity until he releases me. He made it clear that he would begin making these decisions at my 2 week post-op appointment. So. Yes. you over did it. You need to sit back and relax while your other family members take care of things. That includes driving.
