    Anyone stopped losing?

I had experienced a long stall this month (July), for the first time. I had lost 5 lbs in the first week or so of July but then the scale didn't budge for 3 weeks until today. I have been on only liquids since Monday and it seems the stall has passed me. I am down 3 lbs this morning and will continue with the liquid until Friday. When I resume eating, I will not be adding the processed protein (Quest bars, shrewd food puffs), simple refined carbs (pretzels), or any of the junk food (french fries, samosa, etc.) that I had allowed to enter back into my life. Game on.

    August surgery buddies!

I wanted to update everyone on my mock trial of the liquid pre-op diet. I had been doing full liquids for a couple of weeks and eating solids on the weekends. I discovered a couple of things. 1) Adding protein to everything you put in your mouth helps with hunger. Water, soups, shakes, smoothies, etc. 2) After not eating solids and then eating solids, I would feel uncomfortable in my stomach, especially if I ate a large portion. I do believe the tummy shrinks a bit. 3) Once I started the clear-fluids-only diet, more weight started coming off faster. I started the clear-only yesterday, and last night was the very first time I was hungry before bed. I actually had to get up at 10 pm to drink another protein shake because I could not get to sleep. 4) Liquid protein is my friend Overall I'm so very glad I did this mock trial because I tried a bunch of different recipes and combinations of things and learned what I liked and what I didn't. Taking the time to do this has calmed my mind so I don't have to worry about going into these next few weeks before surgery. I'm down 10 pounds already in July, and I hit my goal weight I wanted prior to surgery. Now I actually have more time to get lower. So now, I'm going to set it for 10 more pounds before surgery since I'm going into the clear-liquids-only stage.

    2 Months Post Op Food

On days where I’m tired of the food my stomach can tolerate, I just bake some squash and okra with some spices and have 1/4 cup as a meal. I’ve tried a lot of protein sources at 12 weeks out that aren’t working well so in order to not die of boredom, I’ve had squash for dinner probably 2 nights in the last month 🤷🏼‍♀️ dietician approved and all 🥳

    July 2022 peeps!

Today is surgery day for me. Luckily, I only had to work the pre-op diet for 16 days (14 days on limited food and 2 days liquid). Overall, the pre-op diet really wasn’t too terrible. Thankfully I already loved protein shakes lol. I’ve lost about 10 pounds so far prior to surgery. I’m not really that nervous about the procedure itself, more so the immediate aftermath. I’ll update when I can afterwards. For now though, I’ll see you all on the other side!

    July 2022 peeps!

Im so glad you’re doing well. I think I was in a lot of pain due to hiatal hernia repair as well as sleeve. I also have allergy to narcotic pain medication. So I also wasn’t on pain medication. I can’t remember last time my stomach has growled. I have no hunger pains. Its odd. I had 3 hours of rest after procedure then I had to start walking. I was so out of it. But at day 5 post op Protein is still a struggle to digest. Im over the liquid protein. I have been pushing it a bit with the walking. But also trying to rest.

    Day 1 Liquid Diet

I found it hardest when I wasn’t using my allowed calories(my stomach felt like it was going to eat itself 🤣). My doctor said no more than 1200 calories, so I decided to use them. I stick to the general breakfast, lunch, and dinner schedule. When I get moderately hungry I’ll have a protein shake. So far I haven’t gone over 1100 calories.

    July 2022 peeps!

Had my surgery 7/22. I had no gas pain but definitely pain from the Laproscopic surgery, especially on the right side. I was the last surgery of the day and I stayed overnight in recovery. They didn't have me up and walking until about 5:00am to go to the bathroom. Getting out of bed that first time was painful. It gets better though. I barely lost weight on the Pre-op diet - maybe 4 lbs. I weighed myself the second day after surgery and was up 4.2 lbs. I was bloated from the IV and constipated. Will weigh again when I feel my bloat has gone away. Things I was immediately grateful for after surgery were chapstick, extra long phone charging cord, and my sleeping mask that has built-in speakers. Seriously, those were the only items I used out of my well-packed and well-prepared hospital bag. I stopped taking the oxycodone after the second day and am just on extra strength Tylenol, muscle relaxer, and stool softener. I don't feel hungry and am drinking a combination of protein shakes, chicken broth and popsicles. I am almost up to 64 ounces of water too.
  8. Im 2 months post op and have had no issues with any foods ive tried but I am getting really bored with what im having as it seems to be the same rotation..... I need some good ideas. FEPBLUE hurdles

Good point! I appreciate your advice. I am really hoping that I can move through the process with little to no hiccups. I didn't know this was an option for very long. Thanks again for your comments!!!

    Ugly, boring, and weak

So I’ve lost 180 lbs, and it is still a mind trip sometimes to look in the mirror. For me I feel the same as a person- it’s annoying to me that people act like I suddenly am someone different. Same me, different size. I always had low blood pressure, and I still do. I don’t feel like food or exercise takes over my day, but I enjoy my exercise routine and I feel like food is a pretty settled routine at this point. I don’t weigh or measure, but since I’m getting plastics next month I’m going to cut back on some of the “extra” food since I’ll be cut off from running for a while. On the looking older- yeah, it sucks, no two ways about it. Lost the fat in my cheeks and I am looking my age. I know it’s kind of taboo to discuss openly for some people but Botox and fillers can go a long way to helping out with some of these problems. You won’t look 25 (or 35) again, but it might be worth looking into. A good injector can make a huge difference. Not saying anyone “needs” this but it’s an option.

    Hummus

When I was in the soft food stage, I would eat the hummus with a little bit of greek yogurt on top for extra protein.

    July 2022 peeps!

It is mind boggling to me that people are being told not to use their CPAP machines?! Like, that is a life saving device?? My sleep apnea is so severe, I stop breathing 56 times an hour. My oxygen falls into the 60's. At any point I could just NOT start breathing again. My sleep apnea is the main reason I had to go on blood pressure medicine because it skyrocketed my BP. My body was literally running on fumes. If they told me not to use my CPAP for ANY reason I would flip the bird and put that thing on my face every night. It is not an OPTIONAL thing when you have to use those. I had mine in recovery and in my hospital room to use as I was sleeping. I know "every program is different" but when it comes to a lifesaving device such as a CPAP, I personally don't see any scenario that would feasibly allow that to be banned, even if for a short time.

    Food weight: before or after?

Thanks for the input. I’m only a few weeks post op. So I’m really looking at my Protein amounts closely. This helps.
  14. chronic constipation is a problem for many of us. It's due to the high protein diet plus iron and calcium supplements. Many of us take Miralax, stool softeners, or magnesium tablets daily to keep on top of it. You may have to experiment with different things to see what works for you. And yes - fiber can help, too. If you can't handle things like grains or beans yet, you can always take something like Benefiber.

Hi. I had my surgery at the Washington Spire in April and I’ve never once regretted it. As above, I didn’t experience any pain. The nausea is difficult for the first few days, but it soon passed. I’m not a massive meat eater and typically get my protein through things like lentils and other pulses, cottage cheese, yoghurts etc. In all honesty I now have no interest in food, previously it was my crutch if I was feeling down, or a reward for when something was good. Now eating is just something I need to do. I eat out but I’m careful and will order a starter or a kids portion. I eat most foods in moderation and don’t seem to have an adverse reaction to anything. I get full really quickly and tend to push the food around my plate whilst I’m waiting for others to finish. I didn’t tell anyone other than my husband and parents that I’ve had the surgery so when friends ask I’ll say ‘oh I’m on a diet’ or ‘I’m doing keto’ and because they’ve known me dieting for so long they just accept it. I’ve avoided all alcohol to date - again I just say I’m on antibiotics or something along those lines to stop any questions. I struggle with my fluid intake but gradually it’s getting better. The sips get bigger but I don’t think I’d dare guzzle. My body tells me when something isn’t right - when I’m getting full I get ‘burpy’ and my stomach starts making noises. I took the package at the spire when I had a session with the dietician before and after the surgery so if your worried about what you can eat I’d say it’s worthwhile. good luck

    August surgery buddies!

My fiance said he will do the pre-op diet with me but how strict my diet is I don't think he will be able to survive especially because he works in the hot sun! I am going to have to sneak him a couple of regular Gatorade's and hope for the best LOL! He doesn't even like Premier Proteins and I have to drink that 4 times daily. LOL

    Cholesterol

As @Sleeve me alone! said elevated cholesterol levels is common post surgery. Mine went up too. It’s all the cholesterol being released into your body as you lose fat & the high protein diet (especially animal proteins) & lower vegetable diet add to it. My surgeon & doctor monitored it but it started to go down when my weight loss finally slowed & I was eating a more balanced diet in maintenance. It was always about 5/5.1 before surgery (not bad but not good), went up to 5.8 (danger, danger) & is 4.1 now (gold star 😉). Try swapping in some plant proteins & rolled oats into your diet & see if that helps while you are still losing.

    Ugly, boring, and weak

I am still pre-op and hoping to have my surgery in October but it looks like it may be pushed to January or February. All the things you mentioned are huge fears of mine. I started at just over 300 and I'm 5'4". Currently I'm held back my weight because I can't run with my kids or join them at water parks (much more to mention) and take a lot of meds. However, I'm fairly active now. We walk 2 miles a day (I try to get 9000 steps a day) and there's always errands and practices to do with 4 kiddos. I'm tired all the time now but it's manageable. I don't want to become weak on top of constant fatigue especially since I have young kids and a husband. I have a high muscle mass ratio now and don't wanna lose that. I grew up on a farm and now live in town but still considered strong "for a woman." I don't want such saggy skin that I look much older or sick. These are some of things making me apprehensive about the surgery too. Everyone tells me it's still worth including family who have had wls. However, being constantly tired and weak worry me. Skin removal will not be option for me because we are on 1 income and budget closely to make that work. Surgery is already costing too much. I have OCD and worry my obsession/compulsion will transfer to my food. Thank you for your insight. I hope you find a good medium with your diet so you're not obsessively thinking about it. And please know you are still you. You still have all those amazing qualities. You just have to find yourself again after such a huge change. Your whole life has been rerouted and your brain has to accept it first. You were a workaholic and now your obsess over your food instead. You redirected your skills. Now find something else to direct it too such as a hobby or make food fun with new recipes so it doesn't seem like a chore. Sent from my SM-S115DL using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. Ok I have to make a confession…I’m 28 days post op and I was the at movie theater yesterday and couldn’t resist their Nachos and cheese but I only had 10 chips with cheese dip. I felt guilty and skipped dinner and had a protein shake. Does anyone go through these issues that early or is it just me? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Surgery is almost 6 months out

congratulations! yes the hunger will go away. Are you having the sleeve or bypass? I had the bypass on November, and my hunger shut down for 2 weeks. Now i feel "hungry" but not like before, and a protein shake shuts it down. Its all mental and it is easy as you progress, good luck!!! Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Doubling up on Protein

thats interesting, never thought about that, but the first thing i thought about was, its gonna back you up even faster. My dietician says the high protein does that. Im 8 mos out RNY, and thats my biggest struggle. I take daily stool softener along with laxative 2 times a week. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

So I’ve been looking into self funding bariatric surgery so I’m healthier and can go ahead with fertility treatment. I previously had a band when I was 19 in Belgium which failed massively. I paid to have it removed in the UK 2 year later at the spire.I was looking into the Spire Washington. it was really painful when I had the band fitted, I’m really nervous for how painful it’ll be going through surgery. I’m also vegetarian, has anybody went through with surgery who is vegetarian? Where do you get your protein ect from? Food has been my coping mechanism through life to deal with my trauma, and I know my relationship with food with completely change forever which is fine, but what I am nervous for is still being able to eat out occasionally. What is the average portion size for example a year after surgery? What kind of alcohol do people drink and how many drinks are they able to have? i also guzzle water and this is my BIGGEST concern of not being able to guzzle it and quench my thirst properly.
  23. Call your current insurance and see coverage and criteria. Many plans exclude bariatric, unfortunately. That will show what your options are or if you will have so self pay. then research the pros and cons of each surgical procedure and decide which is for you.
  24. I have a question that I tried to find an answer to and just couldn’t get a clear one. I did email my nutritionist but it’s after hours and won’t here back until tomorrow. So in the meantime I thought I’d inquire here…. I was doing a little meal prep for the next few days and wanted to portion things out to 2ish ounces. I weighed and air fried some tofu…. Tofu is packed in a lot of liquid and even after pressing it there’s still a lot. Obviously the post air fry weight was considerably less, like almost half…. Now, the nutritional value is still the same, protein, carbs, fat etc. So if I weigh it after cooking and log it, it’ll give me the nutritional values for the cooked weight BUT shouldn’t I count the nutritional value of it uncooked? Thoughts? To add: I’m most just wondering about nutritional value here. I want to maximize my protein intake here and I don’t want to cheat myself.

    PMS causing issues?

I spoke with my doctor that day and he said it just happens and he wanted me to switch to vegan protein. Problem solved!! I became intolerant to whey/milk based proteins. I love my fairlife but we must part ways for some time. I found some AMAZING vegan protein though. So I’m not terribly bummed. Thanks for the input!
