  1. Dr. Illan is great! @Bill Yanez can help you get the questionnaire and even set up a Skype consultation (or phone) with Dr. Illan to figure out what's best for you. So far many don't have issues with PCP follow up with blood work, routine tests, etc. If something goes wonky (not typical, but also not guaranteed) down the road, then that might be where your insurance may get touchy. I know with mine they'd cover it because my coverage covers anything besides the actual surgery itself, go figure. As for while you're in Mexico, the price only covers you for the tests, post-op prescriptions, and surgery itself (plus the hospital/hotel stay). If there are any complications you'd have to pay those costs. My suggestion is to get a travel health insurance coverage. I did that just to be safe. Paid $20 for 2 weeks of coverage. Once I was stateside, I wasn't worried. I talked to my PCP prior to surgery about getting it done in Mexico and she was supportive (she'd had 2 other patients who'd done it as well).
  2. I had mini gastric bypass in Mexico with BariatricPal TeamMX and asked about this and was told that if any complications happen either at the hospital or the hotel, taking care of the complication is already included in the medical tourism package cost.

    Sick of liquids!

Tomorrow is my 2 week post-op appointment and I am so excited to have something that isn't liquid!! Wondered if anyone had any favorite ideas for the "soft/purée" stage. A scrambled egg sounds like filet mignon at this point! . I had my RNY on 1/25, which was a conversion from a very unsuccessful and complicated vertical banded gastroplasty which I had done in 2010. Nothing but problems with that....reflux, choking, vomiting. Hoping to feel better and get healthy now that I have the RNY..... Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  4. Nov 23 sleeve with complication (now ok!) Down 51 pounds. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  5. I am lost on this one! Many people go to Mexico for surgery because their health insurance doesn't cover the surgery. So Mexico can be a lower cost option. So if complications arise, how is this funded? This is a very good question. There are a number of individuals on this website that have had surgery in Mexico. I am sure they could provide you their experiences.
  6. Where is my question? I was asking what happens if a complication arises, who pays the bill... Sent from my SM-N920R4 using the BariatricPal App
  7. Ok, so you go to Mexico to get the procedure done, but there are complications and you need to stay in the hospital longer than the package provides. How are these additional bills handled? Sent from my SM-N920R4 using the BariatricPal App

    Minimizing complications

if you follow all the rules you will reduce your chances of having complications however there is no guarantee. however with out the surgery you are almost promised continued weight gain and complications later on such as hbp high chol and diabetes as well and heart problems personally id rather take my chances with the surgery than face all the health issues that come from obesity. good luck to you

  11. You certainly have to consider the possible problems that you might experience, but the odds of complications are very very low. It's normal to feel nervous. This surgery is a miracle. I weigh less than I did in high school, and though my weight loss has slowed, I am still losing and have lost my obsession with food. That happened over night. Keep thinking of the reasons you want to take the plunge. Keep looking at before and after pictures on this site. Meet people through whatever program you choose for surgery.

    Minimizing complications

Good luck on your upcoming surgery. Life is full of risk. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery because I was overweight and my obesity began to seriously affect my health and my life expectancy. A am 3 1/2 years post-op and having the surgery was one of the best decisions I ever made. But it sounds like you are focusing on minimizing complications. So prior to surgery you might create or update your will. Generally this type of surgery is probably on the same order of danger as most types of operations today. There is the risk of blood clots, so make sure you wear compression stockings after surgery and take the prescription blood thinner medicine and walk, walk, walk. There is a risk of ulcers, so make sure you stay away from NSAIDs such as aspirin and also use a proton pump inhibitors (such as Prilosec) for the first year post-op. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So the focus post surgery is on protein, fluid, vitamin, exercise and meal volume control in order to minimize risks. Pre-surgery I would recommend the following: 1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success. 2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery. 3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.
  13. So I am potentially going to be scheduled for the Gastric Bypass procedure for the month of March. I have been told that with any of the procedures that there are risks of course, including risks for complications. I know each person is different, but is there anyway to say that with strict discipline and strict paying attention to doctor's orders post-op, and with strict discipline/strict paying attention to the nutritionist's guidelines, is there any true way to strategize post-op life so that complications never come up? I understand that "anything can happen", but as weird as it is for me to ask this, I would also like to think that it is possible to strategize the unthinkable so that complications never arise. Cause you would think that if you pay strict attention to the rules from your Doctor and your Nutritionist, that you have some control of the potential negative challenges that arise due to Gastric Bypass. Does anyone have an answer to this? If not, are you going to tell me that no matter what you do, no matter how perfect you follow the rules to a tee, you can't control certain elements? Thanks, Gabriel
  14. Honestly Alex I can't believe you would sit there and write such a comment. I was with BP when all this went down with Dr. A. No there hasn't been many complications, horror stories, nor fatalities by the hand of Dr. A. Dr. A has a huge amount of followers and patients. He is one of the best Dr.'s in the world. Keep spewing your hate and you will continue to loose support. And to be honest heart attacks happen. You go into surgery knowing that anything can happen and this didn't even happen during surgery it happened after surgery! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using the BariatricPal App I stand behind what I posted at http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/363291-bariatricpal-is-no-longer-affiliated-or-recommending-dr-carlos-altamirano-cano-and-guadalajara-hospital/ . We worked with Dr. A because he was young and very driven. He got a little popular and started becoming sloppy. While we worked with him, he lost privileges at two hospitals for not following protocols or putting patients lives in danger. After we stopped working with him he got kicked out of other hospitals. These are facts. He does have a great personality but is lacking as a surgeon. I wouldn't reccomend him to anyone. I'm very glad you had a good experience but I stand behind what I originally posted.
  15. Hello fellow sleevers. I was sleeved 1/31/17 I am so excited to be on the losers bench. I now realize that you really have to be mentally prepared for this journey and it is very hard. I first decided to get the sleeve because I failed at so many diets. Then after I went thru all The blood work I found out I had sleep apena, pre diabetic and high blood pressure. At that moment I knew it was time to change my life forever. I am so grateful to have took that step to start my journey on healthier me. I go to my post op appointment Wednesday and I can not wait to get on full liquids. I haven't had any complications as of yet. (Thank u Jesus ) I just still feel very hungry and a little heart burn. I actually going back to work today. Sent from my SM-T113 using the BariatricPal App

    burping? Kink in the sleeve?

Hello Vets, I've been having increased burping and I'm almost 5Yrs post op. Its been fairly smooth sailing so far in terms of complications (only limited ones not worth mentioning). Now I'm burping uncontrollably. I do not have any any heartburn "typical" symptoms. I'm taking Pantoprazole along with just starting on Carafate. I did not have any GERD prior to surgery however Dr. Aceves told me that I had a hiatal hernia that he fixed during sleeve surgery even though I had no idea I had it. I'm told I may possibly need a revision sleeve to bypass which I do NOT want to do but the new surgeon doctor (I was operated on by Dr. Aceves so I can't see him about this unfortunately, may he RIP... ) told me I may have a "kink in my sleeve". Apparently sometimes they put a stitch or two in to keep the sleeve from floating around. My sleeve was not stitched into place to keep it from flopping around so I guess it may have a kink. I'm supposed to get an endoscopy scheduled in the next few weeks with a GI and the (new) surgeon doc wants to be present to see what she's working with. Has anyone ever had this happen this far after surgery? Confused and concerned...

  21. I'm almost 5 yrs post op and having excessive burping that could be either an ulcer or a hernia, we're not sure. I'm about to start doing testing and currently starting on Carafate a couple days ago. Prior to now, I've had an incredibly easy complication free experience with easy weight loss and return to normal live. I'm happy with my choice to have this operation however if you continue to look on the site you will see folks with other complications late stage like addisons disease and thyroid issues so it isnt bullet proof :_ best of luck!

    Anxiety over surgery procedure.

I almost worried myself to death in the days and weeks leading up to my surgery in September. But everything about the surgery was easier than I thought it would be (anesthesia and all). You will worry, that is the human factor, but try to take some comfort in the fact that many people have done it and have had little to no complications. Good luck!

    No insurance route

I self paid because my very expensive gold plan on the exchange won't even remotely cover anything related to weight loss. I looked at going to Mexico, but even though I'm in Texas, I couldn't get over the idea of being so far away from home in the event of complications. So I chose a very good Dr. in Austin, 30 minutes from home. Total out of pocket was a little over $10k. Since my Dr knew I was self-pay, he was very cognizant of any extra expense so I didn't even stay the night in the hospital. Of course, if my after surgery recovery was slow in any way I would have stayed. But I responded perfectly, and was home by 2 in the afternoon. I've been complication free and so far, it's been the best money I've ever spent.

    Very New and Scared

It is ok for somethings to remain private. I thought about it for 6 years. Now 22 months since sleeved and I feel better than ever. The decision like your body is yours. I think I will always find any surgery scary. For me remaining overweight had more complications than benefits. Best to you - be true to yourself
  25. Yes lord... I had surgery 12/5/16 and I have had several stalls... none of the complications you had but I still had stalls so you are not alone.
