I was given a hand out with my pre op diet and here is what they mention to be aware of in the pre op phase (also the post op 2 weeks I am sure too) 1 - Intolerance to cold 2 - Light-headedness on rising, due to Water loss 3 - Fatigue 4 - Dry skin, dry hair, and brittle nails 5 - Temporary loss of some hair 6 - Change in bowel habits 7 - Headache, especially in the first few weeks 8 - Improvement in fertility 9 - Bad Breath 10 - Gallstones & Gall Bladder On the form for the Bad Breath is where it says to massage the gums because you won't be eating anything. I know my lips have been really dry, same with my forehead and my hands feel really tight like they are drying up. I hope that helps a little but I believe the dryness will continue until we start to eat again.

Wow, I had my pre-admit hospital visit this morning and all they did was draw blood and tell me a little about how things will go on Wednesday. I did speak with the anthe....the man who will put me to sleep lol! I didn't have to have an ekg because I don't have any heart problems or take bp meds, and I don't have to do any shots, but I do have to wear the stylish stockings for 2 weeks! Good luck on your surgery! My goal weight is 135 too, if you don't mind me asking have you lost 18 pounds on the liquid diet? I've only lost 10, our starting weights are almost the same!

I choose the Lap Band because of all the positive information I found on it. I love my band, I have been banded now since 3/31/09 I can not see my port nor can i barely feel it... I really think what the previous poster said refers more per persons body... and im a size 10/12 so thats pretty good. My port also has never hurt a lot of people complain of that... and i have had no complications, no PBing and i can eat what i want in moderation... It really is a personal decision.. i have heard the realize band is a newer band??? In my opinion they all do the same job so pick whatever:D

do you have to stop smoking?
IndioGirl55 replied to cmayes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I quit 10 days prior to surgery then couple of days prior to surgery I started again - I told them at the hospital that I had smoke prior to midnight - they still did the surgery - My doc said 3 months but heck I saw him on 5/31 had surgery 7/17 - I still smoke - There are still a few banders who do ... But just like in the rest of socitey we are frowned upon.. It will depend on your doctor - just like with the band everyone gets diff instructions on what to eat and how to proceed from each food stage. -
March sleeves buddy Wanted and Needed

I need buddies! I had mine on 3/10. Today has been my best day but this is SO hard. -
Totally freaked out now!!!
jrg1979 replied to sylhaven's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This "mini bypass" reminds me of the gastric sleeve. Although it may be a great surgery and even may have been a better choice for me, it is just too new and too scary. I am not willing to have my insides rerouted and/or completely removed until I know for sure what the long term effects will be. The lapband may indeed have to be converted to something else 10 years down the road. I sleep better at night knowing I will have that option when the time comes, since it is reversible! -
@@Isabela Macedo It will depend if you're on an employer health plan or private. If it's just private, see the link I posted earlier in this thread for the policy. If it's through your employer, you will have to meet their guidelines as well. I had my surgery 11/19/14 and the process was fairly easy. I met all my surgeons requirements and got approval on first letter. I was paying a ton in private insurance premiums but just counting out of pocket medical expense, my entire surgery including all the test cost $1500. Your surgeon may have their own diet plan you are required to follow.

I spoke with Nina and Monica w/Dr. A
Malaika replied to PennyS's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Penny I am sure that if you get there at 10:45, Ernesto will wait for you -- you may not need to check your luggage as you don't need that much while you are in Mexico so if you have carryon only, your departure will be even quicker. Once your date is scheduled, Nina will send you several emails with what you will need to bring, buy, etc., etc. - if you have any questions after that, you can ask her or us ... several of us have had our surgery in Mexicali! -
When does the "lose 10%" come into play?
I'MREADY replied to I'MREADY's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
According to Albany Med website he does require 10%. Since I am borderline with my bmi (38-39) and weight at 216 at my pcp appointment. I was unsure if I lose weight that puts my bmi lower if I would be turned down. Maybe I'll call them today and ask. Since I would have to lose about 20 lbs, it would give me more time to lose that amount before the surgeon appointment. thanks Deb -
Tomorrows the BIG day!
Lady Lap Band replied to lnmlisa's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am being banded tomorrow as well! 6/19/09 I have to be at the hospital at 5:45am for a 7:30am surgery! I am really excited! Good Luck -
honestly, weight loss is about 90% food and only 10% exercise. I know WLS patients who lost a ton of weight even without exercise. That said, exercise is great for your overall health and people should do it - but an injury that causes a temporary pause in your routine is not going to be the end of your weight loss. also, you could be in a stall - they're very common. Just stick to your program and your weight loss will eventually start up again. Stalls usually last 1-3 weeks. and no, I doubt "this is it" as long as you're adhering to your program. Most of us lose for a year - if not more (20 months for me - but I started out much heavier than you, so I had a lot more to lose)

Which Band Is Better?
aubrie replied to thefish2010's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor said the size of a band sometimes has to do with the size of a person's stomach. He may lean more towards one than the other, but may not have a choice based on the size of someone's stomach. He also said he prefers the low pressure bands as opposed to the high pressure band. the high pressure ones have more of a chance of leaking. I have a 10 cc low pressure band. I think it depends on what the doctor likes, what he's had success with and your anatomy. -
Dear Mom I went to Mexico in 2006 and got a lapband with Dr. Arturo Rodriguez in Monterrey, Mexico for $8,000. Things went South on me in a hurry. I came down with puemonia and couldn't get out of bed the day after the operation. I had to pay another $1,600 to stay 2 extra days. My wife was with me and she got me to the airport and to the emergency room when we landed in Houston. I was in bad shape. The band never worked. After I started to tighten it up there was never any restriction. To make a long story short I wound up back in Monterrey in about 10 months and I had to pay out another $2,500 to be debanded. Loss of work, transportation, hospitals, fills, etc. I spent about $20,000 and didn't loose any weight and have no lapband to show for it. A lot of people seem to have a wonderful experience with Mexico. I'd urge anybody to stop and consider what it'll cost if you have complications like me. I'm sure that I would have had some financial recourse if it had happened in the USA. One last thing I found out too late is that you can get fills here for a Mexican band, but no Doctor will touch you if you have complications. It's back to Mexico you go. Good Luck with your decision

Thanks Heather, I think I know all of this, but I stumble when it comes to social eating. I never realized how much food I am offered at work until I started all of this. I calculated it one day and think the if I ate "right" every where else, I'd still gain 10 pounds a year from eating everything offered. Yeah, a year from now, this will be an amusing story to tell other Bandsters. I'll do some Zen meditation and see if the future me will give me a pat on the head and tell me to quiet down. :biggrin2:

I just jumped through 2 more hoops!
It's_Christine replied to yellowroseaz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's all about calories in and activity out. If you count the calories or use the band to restrict your intake it is the same as far as the basics are concerned. IMO, if you have no idea about what are calorie dense foods you can eat a small amount and not lose weight. I am glad I know how to count calories as I feel it helps me make good choices and my band keeps my portions in control. I found that getting all artificial sugar out of my diet helped me a lot so I don't indulge but I think each of us needs to be sure for outselves. My insurance clearly stated that the detemination for surgery would be made on my pre-supervised-diet weight. If I did not show a signifigant weight loss (for my insurance 5-10% of body weight) they would not have approved me. Check with your insurance and see if your deal is the same. Good luck! -
I have my CPAP study scheduled for next Tuesday evening. I don't have to have the "initial" Sleep Study because I had one 2 yrs ago and insurance accepted it. The Sleep Lab just called me and told me my score is not high enough. Mine was at a 3 out of 24. Insurance only covers it if its a 10 or more. So the sleep lab changed all my numbers. She seemed surprised that I don't fall asleep doing little things, however I would not sleep at night if it weren't for Ambien. I just don't understand why they are making me lie about this. I don't feel comfortable doing it at all. I was borderline on sleep study until my roomate told them that he can hear me snore from down the hall and my neck is big. Hello.. I'm big. I'm hoping to have my surgery in June. Just feel like a trained circuis animal jumping thru the hoops to get this done.

My "know it all" husband....
LindsaySue replied to talkalot1981's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know what you mean, those soldiers...we love 'em but they are a little hard core in the exercise department. I work with the military, all day, 60 hrs a week. I have gotten similar comments. "You can march with us tomrrow morning" or "we'll have you start with 20 situps and work your way up". I appreciate the motivation but I'm obese and I have 10 years on most of them. I can't do more than 1 situp now let alone 20. I guess the best advise I could give you is to arm yourself with some ammunition from your nutritionist and trainer. When he offers to do your food log say "Oh thank you but my nutritionist already has a log and specifically asked me to fill it out daily" or "My trainer wants we to start out slow so I don't cause injury" Let the professionals advise be the polite way to say "no thank you". -
12-12-12 op date - are you ready?

Good for you. Scale moved. Great for you !!!!! The trainers can be hugely expensive. I'm sure there are some great ones out there.....but I've run across a few quacks, too. There are a number of gyms in the area running $10 / month rates. Hard to beat them....and a couple are open 24hrs, too. I highly recommend using the machines as they have the correct range of motion built in, provided you adjust the seat positions properly for your height/reach. I would set up a schedule that allows you to concentrate on one major body area per session. Alternate them to allow for 3 or more days of resting that part in between sessions. Begin by using weights that allow you to do 15+ reps and keep it to 4 sets. You want to work your way up over a few months to allow the connective tendons and tissues to strengthen. Some folks think they can just jump in and gauge everything based on muscle soreness. I had to learn the hard way that tendons and ligaments are the restricting factor and need to be coaxed over time before getting too crazy with it. You can can get a great workout with the machines. I assure you. I know it's not possible to really target where the fat loss occurs......but, I swear it sure feels that way. The most lean parts of my jiggly body are the parts where I've had progress developing those muscles. It really does feel like it.

@@Dub I am a member of a gym through school, so I am covered in that area. I have been doing 10, 5 set reps on an arm machine (I cannot remember which one) to work on arms and chest. I want to add more machines, so I thank you for your advise

Hi all my fellow sleevers I am pre op getting ready about three weeks to go. It has been a long six months getting ready. I am 5,11 262lbs all of it around my waist so I get asked at least once a week when I am due. I often tell them I have no uterus and am 51 years old but thank you for thinking I am still in my child bearing years. I used to try to be polite smile and make up a date so they were not embarrassed for asking. I have done tons of research and feel very confident about my choice. Just worried about having the time to really take care of myself after I work six days a week at a very very very stressful job Anyway thats a little about me really love the forum here and lots of great advice and support.

I can't believe it is finally here after 10 months of hard work. I am excited and nervous - not nervous about the surgery itself, nervous they will change their mind tomorrow LOL, silly worries on my part:redface:. I just wanted to share with all of you and I will be back for my post op support!:cursing: -
I have my surgery scheduled on May 21, 2009. And my Dr. gave me a list of 'rules' for the pre-op... 1. One Metaucil Capsule can be takedn at 10:00 am and one at 3:00 pm for hunger pangs 2. A green salad (no colors other than GREEN!) may be consumed, unlimited. Broccoli, bell paper, cucumber, celery, jicama, asparagus, minimal tomato & mushroom and salad spritzer, up to 5 calories. 3. One chromium Piclinate 400mcg per day can be taken for fat-burning purposes. I am only required to do a ONE week pre-op diet. But you may want to ask your Dr or Nutritionist if these tips are applicable for you! Good Luck!!!

Anyone have a spouse who doesn't/didn't want you to get banded?
twirl replied to hopeful41411's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OMG ( gosh ) you get your band and you show your husband -- it is not easy - but you can do it- the first week I wanted to tear the band out -- ha ha - glad I did not do it -- you get used to not drinking while eating--- takes a few weeks but you will adjust -- the best thing, to me, about the band is that I feel like I will not regain the weight I slowly lose -- you know you lose 10 and feel good and then gain it back - plus a few lbs - I have to repeat this is not easy but I love it - I still need to get used to not ordering too much food - I bring a lot home in boxes and either eat it at another time or treat my cat and dog --- my children are not home anymore and my husband usually does not like what I order -- YOU CAN DO IT -
Out Patient or overnight stay?
Losing 2 replied to WDW Luver's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Before I made my choice, I called at 10-12 lapband offices / centers and each had different options from a couple of hours stay at a surgical center, to an overnight stay in the hospital. I had an overnight stay at a hospital - glad to have had the overnight option; however, I could see how I could easily have gone home in a few hours and rested very well for several days. Best of Luck!
