  1. I still don't have a date yet for my surgery, everything is sitting on my bariatric nurse's desk (and she will be on vacation ALL next week....aaaargh!), but I am still hoping for an Oct. date. Waiting for a call back from my surgeon's office on this topic but thought I would ask here too... Should I do my flu shot before surgery? I'm leaning towards yes, especially since it takes 2 week for the shot to take effect. Just seems like hospitals are such good breeding grounds for flu germs (among others.) Anyone else have some words of wisdom or thoughts on this subject?
  2. Well, I called on Fri. and apparently my surgeon's office phones were messed up. So I left a message with their answering service and never got a reply. I think I will just go ahead and do it anyway. My surgery is likely to happen for at least another 2 weeks.

    Military Spouses

Hi Vanessa, I'm not a military wife but live alone with two large dogs I was in the hospital for 3 days, my boyfriend stayed at my house and took care of my dogs. He picked me up from the hospital and stayed with me for a couple of days. I must stay that my recovery was amazing. I was back to work in one week, I worked 1/2 day in the office and 1/2 day at home for 1 week then back to full day. I was up and moving around (walking) ASAP, I feel that was what helped me recover quick. I did rest and take it easy but I was very motivated to get back to normal. Do you have any family or friends to stay with you when you get home?

    Week 5 Questions

I agree. The food you are eating is filling you up without providing much nutrition. I am 5 weeks out yesterday, here is a sample of what I eat in a day...I am not perfect, just throwing out ideas. Breakfast: premier Protein shake (30 G protein) or Dannon light n fit greek yogurt (12 G protein). On occasion I've had 1/3 serving of malt o meal with a dab of yogurt and teaspoon of truvia mixed in. Doesn't provide much, but if I'm sick of the other two this is what I've had. Morning snack: if I've had a shake for breakfast I'll have a Greek yogurt and vice versa Lunch: 1 oz albacore tuna mixed with a little mayo or plain Greek yogurt, sometimes sprinkle a little ranch powder for a diff flavor, sometimes with 2 crackers or few bites of soft fruit. Pm snack: cheese stick, 1/4 c cottage cheese or chike protein iced coffee Dinner: little bit of whatever I cooked. Last night, 1 oz salmon and 1 piece steamed cauliflower. Salmon was a little too dry for my tummy so I added a spoon of Greek yogurt on top and sprinkled with Parmesan Snack (if needed): sugar free Popsicle, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese I am slowly incorporating more real foods and trying for less shakes and soft foods, but obviously that's a slow process. My main goal is to hit 75 G protein a day which I almost always do. I log every thing I eat because I'm not great at estimating intake. I'm currently hitting 600-700 calories a day which my nut thinks is good but she'd really like me tone at least to 800 with a long term goal of 1100-1300. Hope this helps.
  6. I'm sorry this has happen!!! The sleeve has had some ppl stop or lower blood pressure meds. One of the reason I got the sleeve.. I'm only 5 weeks out and on my same amt. of meds pre-op-hopefully this will change. Try monitoring your salt intake. Sorry wish I had more info for you..

    Depression

That's what i suspected. I've also been on an almost 5 week long "time of the month". I just want the hormones to go back to normal. In time i guess. In time Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App
  9. I am about 3 weeks out and am beginning to feel depressed. I've never felt depressed before. Anyone else feel like they are not themselves anymore? Maybe hormones are out of control. I am never hungry and it is a huge burden to make myself eat anything because I am NOT hungry. I hope this passes. It is not easy to fake happiness and playfulness while being a full time work at home mom. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

    Anyone Have Surgery At/about 200?

I am 6 weeks post op. The last two weeks I have lost a total of 5 pounds. I didnt have the three/four week stall but it has been a slow weight loss. They talk about protein, protein, protein but if you constantly vomit and can only eat soups with carbs maybe this is stalling my weight loss. I feel your frustration because I feel the same.

    Thanksgiving Freak Out

At 8 weeks I was pretty much unable to over-indulge. Now at 10 months I can a little. I suggest you do what you have been doing which is protein first, then filling the edges with healthy things. We usually have a couple healthier vegetable dishes and a tiny bit of mashed potato won't hurt anyone. Just eat the turkey and veggies. They're good for you.

    Sugar Taxed

drinks to help pay for health care reform while dissuading people from overconsuming sweetened beverages. (Another proposal would raise federal taxes on alcoholic drinks). Of course, the mere fact that a tax is effective in reducing consumption doesn't by itself mean it should be enacted. Indeed, the same argument can be made against imposing taxes. Reducing consumption reduces sales, which hurts business, which could hit workers and stockholders. And soda pop ain't cigarettes. Any amount of smoking is bad for you, but as the otherwise-disingenuous beverage industry correctly points out, it's possible to consume sugary drinks in moderation without seriously degrading your health. Still, given the alarming rates of obesity and diabetes in the United States, and given the dire need to finance health care reform, such a tax may do a lot of good. I say "may" because the effectiveness of the proposal is far from clear, as is the impact it might have on the beverage industry, which is already struggling with declining sales. I don't really have a strong position on the issue (despite what happened the last time I wrote about this, when a particularly insistent young anti-tax zealot repeatedly e-mailed me to complain, as if I were trying to take money out of his bank account to give it to the Socialist Workers Party). It's also far from clear that such a tax will pass. A similar effort in New York recently failed miserably, perhaps because the rate was way too high?18 percent. The Associated Press reported that while there has been plenty of lobbying activity on both sides of the federal proposal, it has been relatively "quiet." The beverage industry and allies such as the corn lobby have not wanted to appear too zealous in opposing schemes to finance health care reform, it said. But if you look hard enough, you'll find plenty of strong language coming from the sweetener lobby. Like this gem from Neil Trautwein of the National Retail Federation: "Are they going to hit couch manufacturers? School districts that have canceled physical education?" The AP characterized his questions as jokes, but given the similarly bombastic language from other tax opponents, I'm not so sure. Last week, the New York Times editorial page came out in favor of the tax. While the Times did put some of the onus for health on consumers themselves?where it surely belongs?it also recognized the obesity epidemic for what it is: a public-health problem.

    Ibuprophen

As always, thanks Tiff. ran into a problem. Medicare has now decided No to the surgery. I am done with ALL my hurdles. Passed the Psych no problem. See the surgeon next week and we will try to make aplan to convince medicare, I had back surgery and almost dies from a staff and take antibiotics every day for life and take ibuprophen every day. He said there are ways to get it thru so i am trying to be hopeful.
  18. Most people lose an average of 2lbs per week, sometimes less. I lose about 3 per week, so I'd say you're doing well. But remember...your body will only do what it is capable of, factoring in how you are with your nutrition post-op. The "average" doesn't mean anything to you, really, because the average is calculating everyone else's losses...not yours! Your body will have ups and downs, but if you take care of it and feed it right, you will lose at the rate that is healthy for you!
  19. If your Dr can give you your BMR (Basil Metabolic Rate) and you can track your calories expended each day through exercise it is simple math to figure out how much you will lose each week. You must burn 3500 calories to lose 1 pound. I personally have a 2400 calorie per day deficit which equates to about .6 pounds per day or about 4.5 pounds per week. I get 1 hour per day of cardio and track my calorie expenditure through a Body Media monitor and track my intake on My Fitness Pal. In the end it is input vs output.

    Dr. Malley in KC

Welcome to the board. I go to Dr Malley's practice and Dr. Fearing did my surgery at New Hope Bariatrics. I really recommend New Hope and Dr. Fearing, and the seminar (if you haven't gone yet) is very informative. The one thing I will say about Malley Surgical Weight Loss is that when you make your appointments for follow-ups and fills, make a few of them in advance as the doctors' schedules book up. The reception staff didn't ask to do that for me automatically, then looked at me like I was an idiot when I couldn't get in within 2 weeks for a fill because someone at their reception should have scheduled the appts in advance. Oh well. --Carrie

    Good News Youngin's

Hey all you twenty-somethings! I thought I'd let you know how I'm going to give you a bit of encouragement if any of you are yet to be sleeved. I got out of hospital a little over a week ago and I'm doing absolutely terrific! After all the reading I've done on this site of other people's issues post-surgery with getting food down I was a bit spooked by it all. So far so good - I've been able to eat absolutely everything I need to with no hassles what-so-ever. Milk is fine, fibrous food is fine and even Protein is fine (though it doesn't take much protein to get me full). I thought I'd share it with you because I personally was really worried about how much discomfort I would be in when eating. I'm not sure if it's because of my age, that maybe I've healed really quickly but it could be that. So don't get too worried about it - just go with the flow and test yourself but try not to overdo it. I did have one sliming incident but that because the nurses were forcing me to have some jelly the next day after surgery. I encourage burping early on in recovery - it really helps you feel better, especially cause our new stomachs don't have as much room for storing gases as our old ones did! Good luck to you all - you'll do great!

    Realization - Eating Habits

I'm facing the same issue. I had surgery 3 weeks ago and am struggling to get my calories up to at least 800 calories. I went to the grocery store Monday to get ginger tea to help with nausea and I wanted to load up on every one of my former binge foods. I had to get out of there quick! I wasn't even hungry. I was discussing that with my dietician and she said even though I don't feel hunger, my body is telling me it needs more food. So although part of that grocery store experience was habit, it was my body telling me to please eat more food!!

    vitamin organization?

I do the same as MOMW, except I bought four weekly organizers, each with four compartments (morning, noon, evening, bedtime). I also take a lot of prescription meds plus the supplements. I DESPISE organizing all those pills, so I take an hour once a month and do an entire month of them so I don't have to do it every week. I also do my husband's at the same time, but his four organizers only have two compartments. I listen to loud obnoxious rock and roll while doing this to make the time pass easier. Just despise it.
