    flipped port.

Wow, Kizzie! You have had a real go of it. My port was more sore than I thought it should be from day one. It has only been in the last couple of weeks where I wasn't aware of it all the time. Now it only hurts if I bend over while sitting. I think it gets mashed between my ribs and bra wire. (I don't have your endowment (just a 36DD), but I still need to wear a bra when I leave the house, so there's no question of going without. I don't want to send anyone to the loony bin or to the hospital. ) I had a simple surgery and recovery and have thus far sailed through with no complications. Since I've been away, I haven't had a fill yet, and have lost only 15 pounds, but that's ok with me. All was going very well until this morning, when I awoke with a lot of pain at the port site. No swelling, no redness, nothing but pain. When I walk, move, sit stand, etc. It feels as it did immediately post-op. When I palpate the area, I think I can feel the upper part of the port closer to my skin than it was before. I am VERY concerned. I am away from homw and away from a surgeon for 6 more weeks. Do you have any thoughts? Thanks, and good luck! ww

    flipped port.

My story is a long read, but I have a flipped port, and many complications since the day of surgery. Remember, I warned ya'll it was a long read:
  3. I also had surgery the same day as you guys I had some issues the first few days but woke up today actually feeling alright! Which makes me verrrrry happy! I had a slight fever yesterday but it passed and I cannot complain. So sorry that you guys had complications, I guess I'm not "out of the woods" yet but hoping for things to go as smoothly as possible and ready to eat something more than chicken broth haha

    Advice please!!!!!!!!!!

Happiness1, Do go see the other surgeons! this Doctor is only concerned about his convenience, not you. I had to lose 190 # when I started . The doctor and I preferred the lap band, even when I developed health problems while waiting. Lapband statitistics show Fewer complications, with surgery and long term, than with the bypass. There are some here who had bypass and it was right for them; but if you don't want it, don't do it. BTW, there are surgeons in Omaha and Lincoln Ne who do lapband surgery- if you have to travel. I'll bet there is a Center of Excellence hospital for bariatric surgery in Des Moines, too.
  5. We are going to be flying down to San Diego and hopping the boarder to go to TJ to get banded by Doctor Kuri (excellent doctor by the way). After 2-3 days there, the plan is to rent a car to go to Hollywood and then San Francisco....and leisurely just enjoy the coastline. I know most would say to not do this (and do the trip before the surgery) but I'm wondering....(barring it would be a VERY relaxing trip) to do this. One of the reasons I'm exploring to do this is because...if there was complications (3 days after surgery) I'm still in California and we could easily go back to Tijuana.......rather flying from Chicago back to San Diego again. I'm sure everything will be fine....but I'm always looking to prepare wisely and prepare for the "whatifs" in life. Blessings all...let me know your thoughts?

    First Post Op Problem

Its just like Wasa said and has said. its no offense to anyone on this board so dont flame me for it . But these docs pushing these post op diets up and up is the reason why the US has the highest and is getting HIGHER Slip rates and complication rates than anywhere else ! There is a REASON For it. The makers of the bands do not recommend this ! Its just dangerous. Food is food , you can live on liquids for weeks and weeks. Its not worth it to me to risk my band to have anything to eat. I Understand the docs says its ok. But Like i said there are reasons the US is having higher and higher slip rates ! Mindy
  7. No complications, nausea, vomiting, or regrets! All is good!
  8. Thankfully I had Zero complications. No pain, no gas, no intolerances.
  9. I chickened out last September because of reading all of the regrets. Now here I am months later having to re do all of the insurance requirements. From what I am told, people tend to post the negative. It's an outlet for them. Also, the people who did have complications might have been in poor health prior to surgery. Other than me being 90 pounds overweight, I am healthy. My doctor said he does not for see me having any issues, UNLESS, I do not follow his instructions post op. people point out the negative more thAn the positive

Has anyone had the lapband twice?

There is a section here that is all about the sleeve. Some of the people have been banded but had complications. The are a good source of info.

    confused about restriction

Thanks for further explaining, FurEllie, even if you avoided some of my questions. That’s ok. Don’t confuse a hot-button issue with a spirited discussion. I just remain confused about this quest for the best surgeon ever, when this procedure is becoming quite common across the US – thanks, in large part, to surgeons from other countries who have trained them. Maybe I’m a bit more relaxed because I’ve had several surgeries over the course of my lifetime, some of which were more complicated than lap band. Magnolia, I think the reason you felt full (and me too) right after surgery had more to do with the trauma of surgery (to the stomach) and the swelling / healing, etc. I still never get a huge appetite, but I would like to feel full after eating ½ cup. Maybe some day!

negative study re : Lap banding

Since the Band has only been FDA approved in the US since 2001, longer term reports from the US are only beginning to come out now. As I posted in another thread, in this month's Journal of the American College of Surgeons, there is a report from a group in Atlanta, detailing their results with over 1000 bands. See the thread : http://www.lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=10835 No operative procedure is without risks, but I think the data clearly shows that risk of severe complications, such as death, is much lower with the Band than with GB. To each their own, when GB works, it works great. My personal opinion is that the Band has a much better safety profile for similar results.

negative study re : Lap banding

From what I read I see that there are some suggestions that banding MAY not be as good as bypass, and MAY have more complications, and MAY not have as much weight loss.... but they need to do studies to prove that theory. THAT means, it's NOT a proven fact, it's just opinions. If you read this carefully, you'll find it contradicts itself somewhat. It theorizes that there MAY be less weight loss, and there MAY be more side effects. But over a period of years, the amount of overall weight loss is closer to bypass. Look at the news today... 1 in 29 chance of bypass death? I'll take 2 in 100 chance of reflux over 1 in 29 of death. These quotes tell me a lot about the whole article. <<"that concluded that LASGB had an identical weight loss curve to the open VBG performed by the same surgeons. Kellum (2003) concluded that “t is obvious that only a prospective, randomized series would definitively establish which operation is best in terms of safety and efficacy.” >> <<"The researchers concluded that more study is required to determine the long-term efficacy of LASGB." >> <<“For laparoscopic gastric banding, the available evidence suggests that weight loss at one year is less than that achieved with gastric bypass. More limited evidence on three-year weight loss suggests that this difference in weight loss may lessen over time.">> <<" Early adverse event rates are low following laparoscopic gastric banding, and are probably lower than gastric bypass.">>
  14. Hi, I thought I posted this thread already but guess not..........anywho...... I was just wondering why you guys chose lap band over the gastric sleeve? I'm reading a lot about gastric sleeve now and it seems like it has less complications. So confused.....I really had my heart set on the band. TIA

    Why the Lap Band?

My surgeon mentioned the sleeve during the informational seminar. He does not do it-yet. He is waiting on more research for it. He says eventually it will probably replace the bypass. It works as the bypass but less complications. It is permanent. But like the bypass you can gain for same reasons. that's all I remember.

    Vsg or rny and why?

see link below https://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/gastric-sleeve-vs-bypass.html I am a sleeve almost 6 years out and maintaining. Less invasive and less chance of dumping syndrome. No complications.
  17. As a healthy young person you are less likely to have surgery-related complications (other than malabsorption). At least that's what I was told by the doctors who did my clearances. I am 25 and just had roux en y I think I made a great choice. I bounced back really quickly too, only 3 weeks out!

5 months Sleeve to MGB post-op pic

MGB is short for Mini-Gastric Bypass. Revision weight loss surgery is a surgical procedure that is performed on patients who have already undergone a form of bariatric surgery, and have either had complications from such surgery or have not successfully achieved significant weight loss results from the initial surgery.

    BCBS TX

I called my insurance company and the may not cover the removal of my band bc I didn't have that insurance when it was placed and I need to have "significant complication/technical issues" to have it removed. And I have to show compliance with a nutrition and exercise plan. I had Fluid taken out of my band almost a month ago, I was way too tight, throwing up a lot. Now I'm coughing half way through a meal and have a lot of gas, even on my shoulder. I chew slow and do't drink from a straw. I made a second appt with the nut and will go to the support group meeting. I don't know what else to do.
  20. Ok...so I'm only 4 months out, but I'm doing FABULOUS! I've been super lucky with no complications and an easy recovery. My questions relate to 1) hair Loss....how long did you go thru it cuz mine is really falling out quite a bit! and 2) how about your scars? mine are still VERY red. How long until the redness goes away? I've been putting Neosporin on them, hope that helps but we will see! Thanks for your input. :-)

    Questions for Alcohol Drinkers ONLY!

I waited three months and occasionally (once every 1-2 weeks) have a glass of wine. I used to be able to drink a whole bottle in an evening, now I buy the little 4 packs of 4oz bottles and can finish 1. No complications, no problems with addiction. I haven't even gotten tipsy off my 1 glass, but it makes me full so I don't continue to drink more.

    Questions for Alcohol Drinkers ONLY!

QUESTIONS: 1. How long did you go before having your first drink? 7 weeks post surgery. I had 1 glass (6 oz) at one of my best friends wedding last weekend. Then another 6 oz later at the hotel afterwards. Nothing since. I used to drink a couple glasses of wine on the weekends, maybe a couple beers in a month. Not touching beer or anything carbonated until I am much closer to goal...or maybe longer...don't know...I don't really have any immediate desire to do so. 2. Have you had any MEDICAL complications with your surgery that were attributed to drinking alcohol? None 3. Have you gained back significant weight from drinking alcohol? No 4. Have you developed an alcohol addiction post VSG after having been able to control your drinking before?
  23. I was also de-banded and sleeved in one operation. I was in the hospital for two nights with no complications or issues. I will begin my puree food phase in three more days. I hope it continues to go well for me.
  24. hi guys im 240 lbs at 5'2 have most of the comorbidities of being obese and im 16 days away from surgery and having many doubts i recently went to preop appointment and was told i would not be able to take any pills that contain iburofen or advils or motrin or aspirin for the rest of my life and it was emphasized and that scares me because i have chronic asthma and vertigo and i also get migranes that are really bad and tylenol does not work at all for me so what happens if you need this one pill that s going to save your life? i also have to take steroids and my doctor saids oh dont worry you will have a normal stomach just smaller but im afraid he is only in for the money he is getting from my insurance for this expensive surgery, i mean i know if i dont loose the weight i will be really sick and quality of life will be worst but at what price will i get healthy ? i know all surgeries have many risks and im willing to take those risks but its long term complications or problems that worry me so either way your not home free. well for those who have had the surgery any advice or feedback is highly appreciated

    Fellow Albertans Help Me!!!!

In speaking with Dr. Descoteaux, he told me that if I needed the port repositioned, replaced, or the band replaced, he would do it and it would be covered. Since he is the head of the program in Calgary, I am thinking what he said is true, but then again, since there have been so many cuts to the lapband program, who knows what would be covered and what would not. If you are traveling anywhere out of the country, you can not obtain travel/medical/health insurance that would cover anything. Because the purpose of your trip is to seek medical attention, there is no company that would cover any part of complications, etc. Don't waste any money trying to buy medical insurance if you are going out of country for the procedure. You just have to take your chances.
