    Hungry

I was on clear liquids for three days and then moved to full liquids. I am supposed to be on this for 1-2 weeks, then puréed, then soft.
  2. Hello everyone! My name is Kaila and I am brand new to this forum (actually any forum) and I am definitely looking for some help with this journey. I will start a little about myself. I grew up the majority of my life in New Hampshire, am currently a proud army wife and mom of an almost 3 year old boy. I work as an office assistant and also as a home sales consultant with Seacret. I've spent the majority of my life taking care of others that it wasn't hard to forget about myself, leading to my unhealthy diet and with stress and anxiety, an addiction to food. After moving to Colorado I gained a lot more weight in a short period of time because trying to breathe in this elevation was so difficult it took away my physical activity that I had in our other home. Within 3 months I became prediabetic, hypertensive, and had high cholesterol. I had my surgery and all my preop appointments at Evans Community Hospital at Fort Carson. My doctor was Dr. Mayfield. He was amazing. Very personable and straight forward. He didn't sugar coat anything, but definitely made you comfortable to talk to. I had a month of pre op appointments including mutliple nutrition appointments, wellness (metabolism testing), bariatric surgery group counseling and psychological evaluations. Going through the appointmetns were really important and informative. My doctor was very lenient on the pre op diet. I ate reasonably and cut my calories down by half, but I still enjoyed my cravings occasionally. The day before surgery I ate up to 1:30 pm (only 2 very small meals concidering my Vitamins definitely helped minimize my diet, so I definitely reccomend takin them before surgery for at least 2 weeks) and they provided me a magnesium drink that cleans out your system. At that point I could not have anymore solid food. Day of surgery was a bit tough phsycailly. I just remember waking up and all I could say was pain and shake my head. I spent 2 nights and 3 days admitted. They try to make you walk right away, but I didn't walk until the 2nd day. I was very much under the anestisia for a lot longer than I wanted to be. In order for me to go home I needed to drink 4 - 5 oz of clear Fluid within 1 hour. The first time I tried to drink it I became really sick. Eventually I was able to drink 8 oz. within 3 hours, so they let me go home. My problem right now is that I am on the full liquid diet, but I cannot injest more than 35 oz a day, and only clear fluids. Its painful to drink still ( 5 days post op) and I can't really drink any full fluids yet The first day I tried I ended up in the hospital again dehydrated. Has anyone else had such a hard time drinking after surgery? All I keep hearing is that the 1st week is the worst, but people I've read their information or seen youtube are drinking full liquids like champs the first week, so it makes me feel a little broken. Im also having a really hard time with commercials. If I see Little Caesars pizza one more time I may snap. I have also had such a heightened sense of smell. I could smell my grandmothers plain toast while she was upstairs. It seems like it's making it more difficult. Also, walking is increditbly difficult. There's always a sharp or dull (it changes) spot under my left breast where my stomach would be, but when I walk it becomes more painful. Should you push through it or take it easier? Any advice would be wonderful. I am definitely open to anything that would make my life a lot more comfortable right now!

    Pain

As GassyGuru (cool nick name lol) mentioned. Walk Walk Walk... Walking will help out gas to go away... In my case took me about 3 weeks to begin feel normal again... You can also talk to your doctor and ask if you can take GAS-X strips... they will help a lot.. Everyday will be less pain.. you will get there... try not to focus on pain, instead try meeting walking distance per day. Good luck.. Pain is temporary, but results permanent if you stick to plan.

    Stall

I am 8 weeks out and have lost 40 something pounds, but no weight loss in last week or two. I am frustrated because I had a gastric bypass to lose weight and have been eating the right foods. I am not even on regular foods yet, still on soft stage.

    Stalled :(

I had the surgery on March 28th... I stalled not once, not twice but three times so far. I'm down 35 pounds so far, and am currently in my 4th stall. My body is in a routine of staying the same 1.5-2 weeks and then randomly dropping 5 pounds in one day, just to do it all over again. Its normal, just keep doing what your doing, stay positive, and the scale WILL move, I promise!!!!

    Tired Of Fish

WoW. I think, sometimes my surgery was done in the Land of Oz. I'm 5 weeks out and not allowed to have anything that isn't completely blended and pureed to a smooth consistency. And I need to still be eating this way for another 3-4 weeks. Post op weeks 9-13 I'm allowed to add fish, cottage cheese, cheese and Beans. When I see posts about what people can eat at weeks 2, 3, 4, etc.; it sure makes me want to go against doctor's orders. I can honestly say that I'm sick of Protein drinks, and creamed Soups. But I remind myself that just like we are not here to compare our weight loss to each other to validate (or frustrate) ourselves, what we eat should also not be driven by what other people do or don't eat. Just be careful!

    Travel after Surgery

Your body is most susceptible the first two weeks after your surgery. The last thing you should be doing is traveling long distances. You need to be close enough in the event that you have to see your surgeon. You should be mobile to keep the blood flowing but not that mobile. If you're not mobile you put yourself at risk for blood clots. I'm about two weeks post op and I ended up with an infection yesterday. God forbid I wasn't close to home and couldn't get the right care I needed. Your surgeon knows you better then any other doctor at this point and he/she would know exactly what to do. Be cautious. In the event you suffer from any type of infection or whatever else the band is in a very sensitive location and you could easily die if you're not careful. Just relax for a while before taking any big trips.
  9. I will be 11 weeks post OP when I travel with family to New Orleans. I plan to bring protein shakes with me but would love some tips on eating out.
  10. My surgery went well on Tuesday! Just wanted to let you all know. I'm on Clear liquids for another 4 days, then I'll be able to eat mushy food. So far, I'm not hungry. I have a follow-up a week from today. Hope everyone else is doing well. Thanks again for being here! Kelli

    No goal weight?

@TheJuice202 that sounds smart. I'm only 10 weeks out so I have a long ways to go. I'm sure a lot of people need a number to keep pushing. The further along I go I feel like I may need to do the same thing to keep motivated! I've just always eaten pretty healthy.. so I know the weight will come off.
  13. My doctor prescribed 6-months worth of NEXIUM-mups for acid reflux. While in surgery they fixed a hiatial hernia that they found -- and that did the trick for me. I only needed part of what I bought in Mexico, so I have a 2- month supply available for someone. I have 4 boxes of Nexium-mups 14 tablets per box manufactured by AstraZeneca [20 mgs / tablet] Each box has the original seal on it and the tablets are sealed in the protective dispenser plastic/foil sheets I will sell you all 4 boxes for $100 and I will pay for the shipping anywhere in the USA Write to Liquid Protein [isopure shakes + the Isopure zero carb drink], and Soups to achieve this result. IF I do an Isopure shake [50 grams of protein] and a Zero Carb drink [40 grams of protein], that is 90 GRAMS of PROTEIN for my day. You are not hungry with this routine. I lost 45 pounds--45 inches over all--in only 45 days. Then over the last month I have slowed down because I got off my routine. But if you will do this routine for your first 45 days--you too will have fantastic results. Best wishes to you. And if you know you are going to need Nexium for your acid reflux and I can help you, please let me know. I will mail these to you this week. Everything is in the original SEALED boxes and the protective plastic/foil despenser sheets.

    Solid Foods !

Every surgeon is different, but at 4 weeks out from my surgery I was allowed 'regular' foods again. The first 2 weeks were full liquids, then 2 weeks soft/pureed.
  18. I only lost 9 lbs. my first week but I still felt like Holy Crap!!! Because... I am no longer a Diabetic, nor do I have high cholesterol and they want me to discontinue my Blood Pressure meds. Due to it being too low!!! That is amazing to me!!! All in one week!!

    Exercising?

at that point I was only cleared for walking. right now you should just be focused on recovering from surgery. the weight loss will come and stalls are normal.
  20. I am a band over bypass patient. Had surgery 2/15/10. Yesterday 3/18/10 I went to get my first fill. Stood in front of the fluorscopy machine, drank some barium (nasty stuff) watched it run down to my stomach. She sprayed my stomach with freezing spray. stuck that gigantic needle in which thankfully I did not feel a thing. She filled up my band. Then released it all back out. Then she said why isn't it going down any faster than that. I was like huh? LOL She told me to take a deep breathe that did not help. I could see the barium drink in my esophugus and it was releasing into my pouch but very very slowly. So she was saying I had some good restriction and decided not to give me a fill. She said since I am a band over bypass patient there may still be some swelling in there which is casuing the restriction still. Now I have to go back in 2 weeks to try again. I sure the heck hope that nothing is wrong. The Dr. was quite surprised while she had me standing in there going thru this, so when they are surprised that makes me worried..anyone else go thru this type of ordeal ? Chewing & Spitting

Chewing and Spitting is a sign of an eating disorder. However, I do it very occassionally, and I don't have an eating disorder. Once every couple of weeks I get hot McDonalds french fries and I stand over the garbage can and dunk them in ketchup, chew them and spit them out. They are SOOOO good. I can't swallow french fries. That is a guaranteed stuck food for me. They used to be my favorite food and this way I can taste them and not have to swallow them. But you can't chew and spit often because I understand it will cause digestive problems. Your body primes up and releases everything it needs to digest food and then it doesn't get the food. I guess that does something negative.

    Food Journal?

Same here, I found the best thing for me was to buy a composition book, on the left side of the paper I've got Water, Protein, calories and sugar (that's what my dietician want me to track) and then in the right paper I write the times I eat, drink, or take medicine/vitamins... Writing how much and of course if the food did not sit well. It's old school but I find it really easy.... I'm eating basically the same things so far, three weeks out and in the soft food diets, so it's easy to do this right now.

    Calcium Citrate

    Got approval and Surgery date!

Congratulations on getting your date!! I can't wait to be there.....soon I hope! I think most docs order a lowfat diet for a week before sugery to try and shrink the liver as much as possible as it make it easier to do the sugery. The liver is very close to the stomach and it's possible to knick it during surgery if it's enlarged due to being fatty. My surgeon has his patients do a full liquid diet the week before with Protein drinks and creamed Soups and such. Then Clear liquids the day before and after.....no bowel prep (thank goodness)! Guess he figures that with the full liquids for a week the bowels would be fairly empty.

    calcium citrate

I was told that I needed to get 1500 mg of calcium per day, either via food, supplementation with calcium citrate, or a combination. For calcium citrate, I was told take no more than 500 mg in a four hour span if I am supplementing. It was up to me whether I wanted to do chewable or liquid for the first 8 weeks. After that I could choose chewable, liquid, or regular pills. I have actually stuck with liquid since the chewable tends to have a lot of calories and carbs and I just can't handle the big pills any more. I only take 500 mg via supplementation as I get well over 1000 mg from food every day (I eat a lot of dairy). I track my calcium on MFP so I know exactly how much I am getting.
