  1. My doctor says no "mindless" snacking. If you are really physically hungry you can snack. Like it was mentioned above, til you get the right restriction you aren't going to stay 'full' between meals. I had the same problem. I got full on relatively small amounts of food but the fulness didn't last until the next meal. I asked the nutritionist the same question you asked in this post and she said as long as the snack was food we should be eating (not cookies or ice cream but a form of protein) snacking wasn't bad. Once you are at the right restriction you should try not to snack but it is much easier (I am finally there!)

    Today I Learned.......

I am 5 weeks out and deal with the same thing. Although I am doing good lately about getting in my protein,it all comes from shakes mostly. I eat maybe 2 ozs of food on a good day. I really hope I can start eating more soon bc I know I am not getting close to the recommended amount of calories in that I should be daily and it is giving me a slow(but steady) weight loss. I think I would be losing more if I could up my calories a bit and get my body out of starvation mode. lol.

    Cheating on preop diet

@@susancae you are not alone. There are and have been many who have posted that they "cheated" on their pre-op and even some who have cheated post op!! This whole process is very hard, it's a change to something that you have been used to for a long time and it doesn't happen over night. The reason for the pre-op diet is an important one. Some of it is physiological and has to deal with shrinking your liver and other organs prior to surgery and the other is mental/emotional and behavioral. These last ones are the most difficult hurdles WLS patients have to overcome. Even after surgery these are issues that will remain with us long after the operation. So going through these steps pre-op will help you to get through the post op period where cheating is NOT an option, and make it into a life style change that you can live with it for the rest of your life. If you cheat during the pre-op you are only cheating yourself. If you cheat enough you may be denied surgery even down to the moment of surgery if you have not achieved what your surgeon wanted you to. Yes you can make mistakes during this time with minimal damage. Now is the time to learn and make those mistakes, but really attempt to rein yourself in and adjust to get back on track and not nibble that food while cooking. Those are habits that you need to break now because in the long run they are going to make things much much harder for you. Cheating post op can seriously damage your internal organs so don't do it!! Learn today and make your mistakes now. Learn how to combat those mistakes and put a plan together to help yourself when you find yourself grazing or "cheating". What works for me when I am making dinner, is to enjoy a nice cup of coffee with one of those international or flavored creamers. I get the sugar free one, not the fat free one though now they have both sugar free and fat free. I enjoy that much like a "treat" while I am making dinner and it keeps me from needing or wanting to eat while I am drinking and preparing the meal. Often I work late and by the time I start cooking I am ravenous and this really helps me. You can do the same with tea if you are not a coffee drinker and you can use decaf as well. Good luck I"m sure you can and you will do this!
  4. I am 5 weeks out today and thought I was doing pretty well. Nothing I have eaten has really caused me problems. My problem is making sure I get enough calories, specifically Protein into my diet. This weekend I had a couple days where I felt really nauseous......day and night. No new foods added; couldn't figure out what the problem was. After much back-tracking I realized that I had not eaten much those two days, and NOT eaten enough protein. The next day, I made sure I ate enough protein, and ate more frequently. Ta-da...no nausea! OK....lesson learned. I HAVE to eat...and that's a new one for me .
  5. I am five weeks post op. I am meant to be on a Protein only diet and I have been cheating. Every morning I wake up and say I am going to stay on program but by 4:00pm I have fallen back into my bad habits. I have not eaten a meal and I am not hungry but I start picking off the kids plates and by 9:00pm realize all I have done is picked at foods (grazed) from 4:00pm. I need a little help and advice. I know some people are thinking why have the surgery if your gonna cheat, I did not plan on cheating. Anyone not able to dump bad habits right off to bat ? (I have lost 25ibs)
  6. It is hard to change from one day to another. We didn't gain all this weight overnight. Try to eat Protein only. What helps me is making snack bags to carry with me when on the go. Then I have something to eat. If you cheat, eat just a taste, not the whole plate. Don't deny yourself because you'll over indulge. But don't allow yourself to binge either. It's a fine line to walk.
  7. Maybe I'm different but warm Water made me feel sick....ice cold water is the ONLY way I could drink it!! Same with my Protein shakes I put a couple of ice cubes in mine and it went down so much easier!! Kim
  8. Hi, I am 4 weeks out and I really don't feel hungry but when I eat I don't feel full. I left the hospital on a pureed diet. I am now eating 3 meals a day which consist of 2 tbsp of finely diced or pureed chicken, fish, crab or scallop, Greek yogurt, cheese 2 tbsp of either pureed/mashed fruit or vegetable. 1 tsp of promise margarine or canola oil per meal to ensure I am getting enough Alpha Lineolic acid. I am also drinking 2 Protein Shakes per day. I have not had any problem with any food I have tried. I guess I should feel lucky but this also scares me a little. (I haven't tried beef yet as my doctor says no beef for 6 months). The only time I felt full was when I was in a hurry and drank my whole Protein Shake 8oz in about 10 minutes with out thinking. I felt somewhat uncomfortable but not in pain. I usually drink my Protein shake in 20 to 30 minutes with no problem. It seems there are a lot of members who are having issues with keeping foods down, fullness, etc. I am scared that my pouch is too big and I will have problems later. Is there anyone out there who had no issues at all and has done well long term with weight loss. I just need some assurance.
  9. Ok so I am now 6 days post op and first day back at work. I had really hoped I would feel better than I do right now. I feel over all Lethargic and sore. I have a tinge of nausea constantly. I have no real appetite and have to force myself to drink the protein shakes. I am supposed to start incorperating mushies into my diet tonight or tomorrow. On a bright side I am down 26 lbs since I started my pre surgery diet. Another issue I do have is Diahrreah! I guess it is liquid in liquid out but it is getting old! Are the feelings I am having normal?
  10. I had surgery the same day u did. I came home from the hospital weighing 16lbs more than I did the day of surgery due to all the IV fluids. I was 236 DOS, 252 day of hospital d/c and at 2 wks out I am 221. I have been on liquid diet w some puréed food but I really haven't eaten much. I am really struggling to get my protein and fluids in so congrats to u!!!! The one thing that struck me about what u wrote is all the exercise u are doing. I haven't even been cleared to exercise yet, see my surgeon Wednesday for 2 wk postop. Just today I went to the gym for the first time and just walked the treadmill at 2.5 for 30 min. Just be careful and I'm wondering if the extra exercise and few calories being taken in could actually be working against u. Well I wish u only the best of luck! This sure is a bit of a challenge to figure out, isn't it!!???
  11. I like the idea of net carbs much better. I don't see me eating a lot of non fiber carbs for a while, but I was suprised to learn how many there in dairy products. I think I will be drastically weaning down on those as I move onto dense Proteins. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

    2 weeks post-op exercises

You're doing great! Keep going! Try adding other exercises little by little. Do a sit up. If that doesn't feel good, you're not ready. If it feels okay, do two tomorrow, three the next day. Consider free weights & weight machines. If you can walk, try picking up the pace. There are so many options! Good luck!
  13. I am a couple days past two weeks post op and still in the liquid phase. Every time I drink a Protein shake I get a stomach ache. I am not drinking too much. Is my stomach just not tolerating anything or is something wrong? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. Many people develop an intolerance after surgery. My surgeon said it can be temporary or permanent. Maybe try another protein shake with different ingredients to see if it still happens.
  15. I stalled for two weeks. Try and up your protein intake to get things moving.
  16. Yeah the first few days really stink. In fact, don’t sweat it if you can ingest enough liquids to get your protein goals met. Worry first about water and nutrition will sort itself out later. The best thing you can do is walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk walk. Sleeping more than 3-4 hours at a time didn’t happen for me til somewhere around day 7. I’m a side-sleeper, but trying to roll side to side was impossible for the first couple weeks, and I would have to get up to pee 3-4 times during the night anyway. It was okay though because at least I didn’t have to worry about having to go in for work
  17. Did your surgeon give you a script for nausea? You’re probably past the worst of it but if not call and request one. I’m two months out and yes, the first week especially was rough!! I didn’t sleep comfortably for the first few weeks and didn’t get any energy back until 3/4 weeks. Be gentle with yourself, you’ve been through a lot. Just keep getting that water in and protein as you can
  18. Mine was 1 st week clear liquid 2 nd week protein drinks basically liquids and starting Monday purée food I can't wait.
  19. You sound like you have an awful lot of pressure, be kind to yourself and don't worry about being hungry. Eat dense protein such as tuna and drink plenty (not at the same time!) and stay off the scale except for once a week. You'll drive yourself mad otherwise.
  20. Sorry you are feeling rough. I found that a couple tablespoons of cream of wheat (made with added Protein powder/dry powdered milk mix) taken five minutes before and then after taking a pill helped. My theory is that it primes the pouch a bit. Try this. I am switching from chewable Calcium because I can't stand the taste, the multi Vitamin is a pill.
  21. You were banded about a month before me, I am going through the same thing. I know I don't have good restriction because most of the time I can eat alot of food. But occasionally, usually on lean hard (dry) protein, I golfball and slime, sometimes PB too. I'm sure you are going to get alot of advice about going back on liquids and all of that, but I think you should go ahead and get your fill. Eat when you can and don't when you can't. For me it's a total time of day thing. I can eat a little in the morning, alot at lunch, and not much after 7 unless I want to see it again. Try tracking when and what hurts and see if you can find a pattern. It kind of works for me...

    11 days post op

I'm on 1/4 cup of mushies three times a day plus two protein shakes. My mushies are either egg, tuna, meatless meatballs or crab cake.
  23. that is not too bad I guess.. I can make smoothies at my job but I never drink a whole one... that's why I still have problems getting my Protein in
  24. it's still hard for me to get my protein in... and I'm 5 months out
  25. Check the soup. It may be the best option
