Protein Drink Inquiry
Shar replied to weightingtolose's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I was wondering about the following..Weightingtolose, keep in mind that your body can only absorb between 20 and 25 grams of Protein at a time, so you won't do much benefit (in my opinion) by having a 50g protein drink all at once. I have tried the bottled isopure and thought it was horrible. It's no fun if you've got to choke it down. I really like the AdvantEdge Carb Sense creamy chocolate. It's not bad and it even satisfies my chocolate craving. Hi,Could you tell me if the AdvantEdge Carb Sense is the same as the liquid whey protien test tubes? I have not heard of either and my surgery is in a couple of days. I live quite remote so was thinking of purchasing the necessary "stuff" before the surgery. I just want to be prepared before hand. Plus, where do I get them? For a few weeks after my surgery I had a really hard time getting all the liquids I needed, so the thought of having to drink the shakes was not appealing. ........I rave about the liquid whey protein test tubes wherever I go because they are a great option. It is a 3oz testtube, and you can choose between the 25g and the 42g protein tube. I buy the 42g and split it. I'll drink half in the morning and half in the afternoon to tide me over until dinner. By splitting it, I get 21g of protein at only 88 calories! And because of the protein, it really fills you up. A word of caution though--the orange is sickly sweet. I like the grape and fruit punch best. Thanks for all the good information, as I too think I will have a problem with getting enough liquids down. Shar Virginia -
Practicing for the Band
whygirl replied to sistasassy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Teri! Yes, I too have been practicing. I'm trying out a few Protein shakes/drinks to see which ones I like and want to start stocking up for pre and post surgery liquid stage. I'm thinking about ordering the samples on the unjury site. Chewing forever is hard for me to get. I know I have to get better at that. It's hard. Someone at support group said not to wait too long to eat when your hungry, as you tend to eat faster because your starving. And some tips I read here were to put your fork down in between bites. I even read to use small children's silverware so you can't fit much food on it. I haven't tried these tips yet, but I'll probably try them out. Good luck to us all during these pre-band months. -
Your body is adjusting and needs time heal. The best thing you can do for yourself is to put the scale away and focus on getting in your protein. Your weight is going to fluctuate as you lose/retain water, put on muscle from exercise etc. Stepping on the scale everyday does more harm than good. Hang in there and trust that if you make smart choices regarding food, protein and exercise, the weight will come off. You can do it!

Weak Immune System?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to LifeIsGood14's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This sounds like a good question to ask your doctor. First, make sure you are at minimum getting in ALL of your Protein and Water and taking your recommended Vitamins and supplements. I have HEARD that taking extra D (in addition to what has already been directed) helps but don't know for sure. I hope you are feeling much better soon. -
Unjury chicken soup protein in early post op days?
Mrs.FullerRN posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It seems like this would be a good way to get in fluids and protein in the early days. It seems like many people are having trouble getting enough fluids let alone protein. Seems like this would be a good way or am I missing something? -
colds when sleeved?
S(he) be(lie)ve(d) replied to KarenF1972's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was Sept 8th. At my 3 week post-op mark, my kids brought home head lice. I had to clean like a freak, do massive amounts of laundry and treat & check 3 heads, plus mine. My hubby just shaved his hair. Lol! I paid for it by over doing it and actually ended up taking some pain meds I had left over, plus some valium from having my hiatal hernia repair done at the same time, as well. Because I over did myself, I ended up getting sicker than a dog with a nasty head cold. I had been down for 4 days and completely exhausted. I could not function. Then my 8 year old comes home with a concussion. Oh dear God! I am at wits end. I literally cannot handle anything else right now. My husband has been a saint thru this whole thing. I ended up calling my Nut because I was having extreme pain in my left shoulder on my collar bone when I would eat. It would last for 15 minutes afterward. She told me to take a step back in my foods and go back to really soft mushies. October 7th, my birthday, would have been the day when I can eat normal foods. My nut said it is a referred pain from my hiatal hernia repair. My esophagus is enflamed, as well as my hiatal hernia repaired area. So, eating won't be as easy again until the swelling goes down and the coughing settles down too. I also have to increase my Protein in take to 100g and no less than 64 oz of Fluid everyday. My body is trying to still recover from surgery and is also really trying to fight a nasty cold. So, it doesn't leave me with much of anything to have any energy at all. I am grounded to the couch for another 2-3 days to recover. I've already been there for 4 days. I think I've grown roots already. Ha! I hate just sitting/laying down doing nothing. But, I also feel horrible. I've also been advised not to go to a funeral that is out of town for obvious reasons. Either have to take care of getting myself feeling better and stay on the down low or end up in the ER. So, I am being a couch potato and sprouting roots. Being sick with the sleeve in the 1st month of recovery makes everything about 10 time harder. Trust your doctors and keep healthy, even if you have to post pone. Hopefully, my light at the end of the tunnel will appear in the next couple days. I am so anxious to not be sick anymore and just focus on becoming the healthy me again!!! -
HI, I'm on day 5 from post-op, but each am, I wake up like I am in a room full of smoke. Everything is fuzzy and it takes about 1-1/2 hrs to clear up? I'm getting plenty of liquids in and protein shakes. I'm also spilling large amounts of ketones in my urine, but doc seems to think that is normal (ketones break down the fat!) but can be dangerous with folks who are type 1 diabetics like me. Need to look out for vomiting and more nausea. Just wondering about the fuzzy vision in the am... Anyone else have that? Six holes in my belly, but all are good but one... Still sore in one spot so that must be the one where they pulled my stomach out of!!

@MelTed, I looked it up, most people know it by Emend, so glad it worked and worked well for you. Hope it is an option for me as well as most everyone on this thread.👸Happy Surgeries to us all!!!!

I had my sleeve on July 18th, 2017. I am 9 weeks post op. My highest weight was 222, surgery weight day I weighed in at 210 and I am 190.8. I have been following the diet to a T. My sister who had the sleeve surgery done a few years ago eats cheetos, drinks soda and ate crap food and the weight just FELL off. She started at 225 and is now at 143. For me, yesterday I had a protein shake, two quest bars and a few bites of chicken salad. In total about 750-800 calories. My doctor told me to stay between 800 and 1000 calories but the weight is sloooooooooow to come off. I have read others that are eating between 300-400 calories a day and it's working but my doctor says NO to that as it throws your body into starvation mode. Can y'all tell me your input on this? Should I lower my calories anyway?? I'm feeling very discouraged today and really don't know if I should be eating more or less... Thanks for your help!

returning back to work
Jennifer2575 replied to DOMINICANA88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm back to work 6 days post op. I make sure I drink my fluids, add flavorless protein to them if I can't get a protein shake down. I'm in a desk job and going back was not a problem AND I thought about good less keeping busy!! -
How long for this stall?
JinaLeah replied to shakur154's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I was sleeved 3/6. For the last week I have lost and gained the same 2lbs The doc told me today it was normal. That in the first couple of weeks you lose because you lose water and muscle. Then it will take your body a little bit to adjust. I know I weigh day and night lol. She said the same, weigh once a week. Keep up on your protein and water. It will happen At least it better -
Just back from another out of town meeting. I'm glad I brought some Protein bars along because the gluten free was interpreted as vegan for the plated meals. I'm going to be more specific in any special requests in the future rather than trying to use a more conventional special request. Next time I'll request high protein, low carb, low fat and no sugar. Still feel really fat
MrsKarenC2008 replied to confusedgirl18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the others ... you have to take in protein! you've put your body through something major ... and it needs that fuel to keep it going ... because you're not taking in other types of fuel right now ... Don't let this one thing sabotage your success ! Keep plugging along ... you will get there!!! -
I agree that it sounds like a lot of food, but my plan calls for 3-4 oz portions of Protein 3 times a day starting at 2 weeks! No veggies though. I can't finish that much in one sitting, so I just portion it out, and eat what I can in 30 minutes. I was told to stop eating at 30 minutes (assuming I'm not still hungry), rather than sitting and trying for an hour just to get the full portion down. ~*~ Find me on YouTube: Trisha's Sleeve Story ~*~

I'm 8 weeks post-op. My doctor wants me to be eating 3-4oz protein per meal plus 2 servings of veggies each day. My issue is that I hate eating the protein! I chew and chew and chew, take small bites, and it still goes down funny. Anyone else have this problem?

Does Feeling Full End?
JamieLogical replied to Lisa_85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess it depends on what you mean by "feeling full". I no longer go from feeling fine to "OMG, I'm going to explode!" in one bite like I did for the first 4 months or so. But I do still get "full" feeling to where I don't want to eat anymore pretty quickly. It's just not so painfully uncomfortable now. Like, I just had my morning protein bar. It's 2.22 ounces. And I definitely feel too full to even want to take a sip of water right at this moment. I'm 17 months post-op. -

Good Sources of Carbs
catwoman7 replied to GummyBearQueen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my program was a balanced one vs one of the ultra-low-carb ones, but regardless, we were told to focus on protein and fluids during the early weeks, since those are important for healing. -
I am 15 days post OP sleeve and over the last 5 days I haven't lost any more Weight! I did look it up and it seems it's a normal thing around this time, but I wanted to hear your opinions or if anyone has experienced this as well? If it matters, I'm up to about 59 oz of fluids a day and soft foods (eggs, low-fat cottage cheese, protein shakes, etc). What are your experiences? Friday Morning Weigh Ins - 12 Sept 2008
mdhomeschool replied to lellow's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This is my fourth week post-band, my first week in mushies, so I'm surprised and delighted (and confused?) by a 6 pound loss this week. Last week: 216 This week: 210??!? I have been hungry, really hungry, but I'm terrified of stretching something, so I'm only eating 1/2 cup at a meal, 50+ g of Protein, and averaging about 700-800 calories. I feel as if I should be eating more calories, but I don't know how to do it and only eat 1/2 cup at a meal. I guess a trip to the nutritionist is in order. -
Calories really aren't an issue at this point. The main idea is to get your protein in (like 60gs or so) and get plenty of water. 64oz or more a day. Do not let yourself get dehydrated. There will be a time when calories count, but not right now.

I've found if you call ahead to whoever is doing the catering you can find out what they will be serving. I always bring a Protein shake with me in case I can't eat anything. There is actually a picture of me the day I started the pre-op diet that also happened to be a friend's wedding, sucking down a protein shake in an evening gown and feathered fascinator! lol That being said, most places serve vegetables of some sort with their dishes or fruit in the morning. But in all honesty, at 7 months out I think if you just ate what they serve in moderate portions you should be OK.

time to consume a shake?
Casie83 replied to Josh2xh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only 2 weeks out but it takes me about 2 hours to drink a whole shake. Now water I tolerate better and can drink a glass in about 30 minutes but the shakes are really hard for me. I asked my surgeon at my post op and he said most people struggle the first few weeks with getting in the 64oz. But it makes us try harder to reach the 64oz. But as you see everyone has different restriction. I just try to keep a glass of liquid nearby and my goals this week are to get in 2 protein shakes each day, hopefully it will get easier but it's a lot of work at the moment. -
Two weeks post-op

Welcome! It sounds like you are doing great. Getting in your Protein and Fluid is the most important thing right now. You are right on track. Just a heads up, you will probably stall about week three which is completely normal. Embrace the Stall! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall
