One thing I saw on this board that really peaked my interest about the Protein Shakes is to buy sugar free instant Jello pudding in your favorite flavor and add a teaspoon of the dry powder to your plain old Protein shake for some great flavor - try it! it couldn't hurt! :tt1:

My dietician has recommended Slim Fast 2X a day, and Premeir Protein Shake 3X a day for the preop. Originally she wanted me to use Medifast but I've had it before and I don't like the aftertaste. What are the ingredients to your shakes? They sound good.

Is my Nutritionist keeping me fat - Part 2
jguttery replied to rosstheboss's topic in The Guys’ Room
I would listen to the Bariatric Nutritionist advice about lower calories. The only way to loss body fat is to eat fewer calories than are burned. Get rid of all starchy carbs, and don't overload on protein. -
Cerrin, Right back atcha. 3 months RNY post-op eating challenged????
DelayedGratification replied to DelayedGratification's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much for all the great insight and reassurance this what I'm experiencing is normal for 3 months post op. I'm trying to stay focused on protein as that's what the doctor stressed and even though my larges protein source is still shakes, I'm okay with that. I do tend to lean toward the fish, shrimp and scallops when I do try and eat real food so I'm feeling ya New Orleans RNY buddy. I can certainly relate to those of you that posted, "I get hungry but then done after two bites" that's exactly where I am right now. I seem to eat fresh fruit, mostly berries, very we'll but not so much on vegetables. Anyone got any good vegetable recipes I might try? -

Happy2BMe1 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok... So wow this has been such a transformation for me so far very happy with results so far and are seeing numbers on the scale I have NEVER seen that's great AWESOME actually never experienced such a thing before feels great but my BIGGEST upset is this nauseous feeling I get every morning... I take my acid blockers at night that helps with the burning but I feel empty like no food in my tummy at all I hate eating at this hour very early 5am/6am because all I want to do is go back to sleep and enjoy my morning easing into my Breakfast, it's like I have to eat something to feel better and if I pick the wrong (soft food) to consume like sweets (Protein drink, apple sauce, yogurt I get so nauseous and tummy starts going crazy wanting to vomit. So yes I am trying to stay away from the sweets as a coat for my tummy but choose more warm foods but wow I have to actually cook the food (not a fan of microwave food, would rather bake it taste better/boil/sear) and the microwave food I can handle cant eat right now at this stage. So Im like really now I have to have bfast when I don't even want to cook/eat ahhhhh just wanna sleep pls help thx. PREOP-357 SURGERY DAY 1/14 ----- 341 MONTH 1/20/14 ----- 323 2/24-----309 -
Restriction time post recovery
Bufflehead replied to ElizabethO's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it's possible that you would both be able to go back to work according to your plan, but I think your plan is pretty ambitious. If you go forward with it, I would say have a back-up plan for what you are going to do if it doesn't work out the way you envision. I was not ready to go back to work for two weeks, and I have a desk job. I was just too tired. And I had what most people would consider an easy recovery: no complications, able to get all my fluids and protein in from day one, up and walking 2 hours after surgery. It isn't so much the fear of hurting yourself after surgery as it is just not having the strength or energy to get through a day doing the sorts of things you describe. It might also be hard to keep sipping liquids throughout the day while working on things like putting a fence up and getting fields ready for planting. It might even be hard for you to go back to work as a teacher with just a week off (I couldn't have -- but you are probably younger and perhaps starting at a lighter weight than I did). I am not meaning to discourage you, I just do want you to think of back-up plans for what happens if you and/or your husband end up needing more than a week off and/or a couple of weeks of light duty. -
First business trip since surgery is tomorrow
Talaria posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 3.5 weeks post op and I have my first business trip tomorrow. Fortunately it's a 24 hr trip to DC (I live in Boston), and it's significantly shorter and time and distance as compared to my usual trips overseas. Nonetheless, I'm worried not about what I'll eat, but about STAMINA. I'm friggin' EXHAUSTED. DEPLETED. Just so, so tired. I'm getting Protein and liquids in, but I go to bed at 7:30 every night. I know I'm still healing but I just feel so tired. Since I can't bring my Protein shake through security, my plan is to drink on the way to the airport, get a Greek yogurt and big bottle of Water at the airport, nap on the plane, and I built in time for a nap before my work event tomorrow evening. Fingers crossed I can make it through this! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Well here I am 6 days ot and feeling good. I had my op in Czech Rep (I live in UK) on 3rd April, I should have come home on 6th but I was feeling sick on day of travel so surgeon said No. He was so good though he ordered immediate xrays and bloods to make sure that there was no sleeve problem and everything came back OK. I felt much better on 7th and travelled home then. Since arriving home I have been feeling tired but OK. I am getting in my liquids (Phew) and getting my Protein by putting the Protein powder in greek yoghurt. One thing that is not brilliant is sleeping -I am not sleeping through and am waking 2 or 3 times per night which is adding to my feeling tired. Anyone else have this? So so far no real problems or regrets. Cathy

4 wks post-op, can't get enough calories
Delta_Dawn replied to Delta_Dawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just wanted to give a quick update in case anyone is reading this thread with the same issues, and also to thank you all for your comments - they really helped. I'm not halfway through week 5 and, until yesterday I was struggling to get more than 200 calories a day. I've lost 32lbs in five weeks - so that's been amazing - but, for the first time in my life, I started to worry about malnutrition. My skin has started to show the effects of so little nutrients. Anyway, I had a bit of a breakthrough yesterday. My doctor had told me that as long as my calories were Protein, that was the most important thing. So I stuck to trying to eat eggs, chicken etc, and could manage about two tablespoons, or less, and I would start feeling so nauseous I had to stop. Anyway, yesterday I was feeling so ill that I decided I didn't care what I ate anymore as long as it had calories, and I bought a tuna mayonnaise sandwich on soft wholemeal bread, and some pate and bread. Turns out, I can eat these (without crust). I ate almost the whole sandwich! Amazing. Took me an hour, but whatever. Anyway, I think the carbs are helping the protein go down or something. Saying that, I tried Pasta a few days ago and that didn't work at all. But I feel like a different person today. So far, I'm at 200 calories for Breakfast and lunch - which doesn't sound a lot, but compared to the last few weeks, it's a huge change. I'm seeing the doctor for my follow-up on Monday, so I guess I'll find out more then. Thanks again for all your comments -
4 wks post-op, can't get enough calories
readi2lose4 replied to Delta_Dawn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not getting enough calories can affect your metabolism, dehydrate you, and make you feel fatigued or lack energy. I recommend that you check with your doctor as well to find out if there is a complication. I know at first I was scared to eat/drink too much because of the stomach only being able to hold 4 oz. However, on my first post-op visit, it was explained to me that liquid including the Protein drinks go straight through. It is the solids that our stomachs can only hold the 4 ounces. Since then, I have felt more comfortable drinking liquids throughout the day (always 30 minutes after eating), and I have been able to get in at least the 64 oz of liquids if not more. Also, at my doctor's office, they gave us a timeline for eating the 3 meals/2 Snacks (protein drinks) throughout the day. -
My dad had his WLS 4 weeks ago and as I preceded him two months earlier he usually comes to me first with his questions. My doc told me that 1000 cals daily is a good amount to have and to shoot for 80 g of protein ( which I have no prob getting). My Dad is wondering what the typical amount of calories per day is for the men who have had this surgery. So far he is doing very well but I am sure he is still at the point where he is eating much fewer calories than he will once his stomach is healed up.

Vomiting 2 weeks out - stomach bug or something else?
Travelher replied to Hannah Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Could be a stomach bug. other causes of vomiting could be dumping (eating things with high sugar content...lay off the fruit and see if it makes a difference). My Protein shakes make me dump if I drink them too fast. I have a friend who said she didn't dump...but was having regular vomiting episodes. Guess what. That was how she dumped as they usually happened after eating a high carb item. I get sweaty and nauseous and dizzy and feel gross but don't vomit or have other gastro symptoms. other causes could be a stricture. I would call the doctor's office and see if they can help narrow it down. -
Vomiting 2 weeks out - stomach bug or something else?
Hannah Lee posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I'm very new here (first post).. I had been meaning to find a good forum for support/info, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Now I am really needing advice, and it's of course Christmas so I can't reach out to my surgical team. I had RXY two weeks ago tomorrow, my recovery has been totally great to this point, a breeze. But as of about 3am yesterday I've been having bouts of "vomiting" every 4-5 hours. However, when I vomit, absolutely nothing is coming up. Not a morsel of food (and yes I was eating bits of things throughout the day--watermelon, a few banana slices, 2 T of mashed potato) or liquid, nor even any kind of stomach juices or bile. Normally, even if your stomach is totally empty and you're dry heaving, you at least get some of that super gross, yellow stomach acid. In every other respect, my vomiting episodes are normal, with the heaving and retching, and muscles seizing up. But I literally just get the pre-pukinh saliva in my mouth that I spit out. I feel fine in between these bouts of vomiting, until about 5 minutes before when I know it's coming. I may have a fever, but can't find my thermometer. Now, at this point I will add that three days prior to my getting ill, my mother has what she says is the same thing. 24 hours of vomiting with nothing coming up, no stomach acid, no food or liquid. (Incidentally she also had a gastric bypass 8 years ago.) My last instance of "throwing up" was around 3:30am this morning, so not sure if it's going to happen again. I had a few sips of Protein drink, and lots of Water so far today. May or may not be related, but I do feel constipated, and my last BM was diarrhea about three days ago. SO. I'm not sure if this is just a normal, poorly-timed case of a contagious stomach bug. It seems weird that I have not vomited up ANYTHING at all at any time though. Or, is there something wrong with my stomach? A fistula? A leak? I haven't had any abdominal pain to speak of. I also worry that if it IS just a stomach bug, all the vomiting may do some kind of damage inside as well. Does anyone have any thoughts for me, or any similar experiences? I would be really grateful for any ideas or words of wisdom. It's terrible timing, since it's a holiday weekend and I can't reach my surgeon's office or the program RN. All I could do would be to go into Emergency... I just don't know. Hannah in Oregon -
I've tried everything and it's all making me sick! Protein shakes, protein gels, Greek yogurt, milk, peanut butter, eggs???? it's all so nasty! I don't know how I'm going to do this!

Not loving this Sleeve this week......soft rant....sorry Felipe
BabySheldon posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nothing but problems this week. 1. "Shark week" - lots of pain and could only take children's ibuprofen. (Approved by my surgeon) but its disgusting! 1a. I asked the pharmacist if i could open the gel-caps and mix with food.....did that and nearly choked to death.....went down the pipe tho :-) 2. Tried to eat eggs for the first time and it was a complete and total disaster! 1/4 tbsp was all that was needed. Took Felipe 6 hours to digest.. 3. Still can't swallow any pills and there is no way in h/ll that I am going to attempt to consume any Vitamins. 4. I have tried every possible Protein shake concoction and little miss sleeve is not having any of it...2 oz.....thats it and its a wrap for Felipe. 5. Constipation....my nurse says I should not live on laxatives but if I don't Felipe shuts down and i cant eat, drink or medicate.....ugggg... 6. I tried working out, which was great...but with 200 or less calories a day, it was just unsustainable... 7. Now I'm back at work full time. My brain needs protein to write these complex contracts...but i cant get it in....:-( Ok, i'm done with my Felipe bashing.....i just want to feel better without so many obstacles... Shelby I really want this to work....my issues or not around struggling to stay on plan or head hunger....my struggle is that my sleeve is my sole source of nutrition and I have to rely on a 3 1/2 week old for everything....and she's doing the best she can, with the tools she has, for right now. -

I use the GNC pro performance AMP chocolate powder (amplified wheybolic extreme 60) mixed with skim milk and it really does taste like chocolate milk. I DO 2 scoops to about 8-10 ounces of skim milk (I was doing half skim and half water but it depends on how I feel). Each scoop has 20 grams of protein. Three scoops has 280 calories. I bought the small bag first and if you do not like it, GNC will take it back. I also drink the Isopure clear protein drinks but some flavors are terrible. I drink the grape (tastes like weak koolaide). And the pineapple-orange-banana. But they are best super cold over ice and if you are preop and allowed to use straws they are not so bad. Each 20 ounce bottle has 40 grams of protein. These too are available at GNC. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

Good evening everyone, next week Tuesday (might I add its the day after my b-day) I will be having my surgery. I was notified of my date last week Thursday and I said I was gonna start my protein shakes as of Sunday that just passed and I have yet to dj it because they taste so horribly horrible but that was before I knew the seriousness of needing my liver to shrink. I guess because I've been battling get the surgery for 3 years and finally decided to do it due to graves disease (hyper thyroid disease), hypertension, migraines, gerd and most of all an enlarged heart I choose to live but it's not an easy road and I am glad to have found this forum...so if anyone has any suggestions on protein shakes that aren't so bad I would greatly appreciate it
-
I drink the EAS Advantage chocolate shakes that you can get at Walmart or some supermarkets. They also come in Mocha, strawberry and vanilla. They have 3 different kinds, with 3 different levels of Protein. One is 17 g, one is 20 and the other is 42g. The 42 g of Protein shake is very thick. They taste quite good. You can also mix it in a blender with crushed ice and make it the consistency of a frosty. Another trick I learned when I tried Optifast a while ago is you can take some Diet soda.. Cola, Cream, Orange,Root beer, Grape etc.. whatever you like and mix it with the Vanilla flavors with a blender. They actually aren't too bad that way either and gives it a much better taste. DO NOT use regular soda. You can also use some flavoring like Vanilla extract (they have all kinds of flavors such as rootbeer, raspberry, strawberry etc.) to mix into a vanilla shake. There are also tons of shake recipies on the forum under nutrition. Good luck, you will get them down! Think of your end goal.. Your health!

1 week post op and a bit confused
Threetimesacharm replied to HeatherMiguel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you shouldn't feel full from water, but most definitely when you have your protein shake. I would suggest slowing down. It takes me about 1 hour to have my 12 ounce shake and sometimes I can't finish it. -
6 months post OP and I'm kinda stuck in the process
FrankyG replied to volsfan82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
53 pounds in 5 months is a very decent loss, so don't panic too much about the time its taking... after all, I'm sure it took you years to put on the weight (just like most of us on here) so taking a year or so to get it off isn't terrible! Without knowing what exactly you're eating and whether you're hitting all of your daily requirements, we can't help you much tho. Are you eating healthy foods - Protein first, veggies next and complex carbs in moderation after that? Are you tracking your calories, carbs and fat - every bite of food that goes into your mouth - to really know how much you are eating? Are you getting your recommended levels of protein and Water daily? Are you doing moderate exercise? Can you clarify what you mean by eating all "the stuff I want" - meaning stuff that is bad for you (sugars, simple carbs, high fat, or heaven forbid junk food or fast food restaurants and crap in a box type prepackaged meals from the grocery)? (goodness I do hope not!!) You will lose some weight in the beginning even if you are eating absolute crap due to the restriction and the loss of appetite. But if you haven't thrown out all the crap food habits and taught yourself how to eat healthy, whole foods during the year or so you have before your body adjusts to the sleeve... then you will regain the weight. The sleeve is not a magical fix that means you don't have hard work ahead of you. It is a tool. It won't do all the work for you, you have to use it correctly and work HARD at it if you want to succeed. That being said, you are losing weight, and sometimes it just goes slowly. If you are tracking your food, eating healthy, and getting all of your daily requirements in, then you just get to be one of the "lucky" ones that will take longer to get the weight off - and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But yeah, it sucks just the same to not be one of those types that gets to drop 100 pounds in 3 months and be at goal weight in a year. So do give us more details to work with and I'm sure there are many others here that can give you more ideas on things to look at and try. -

Pre-Op Liquid Diet
vsg_queendiet replied to SassyScienceNerd's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a two week liquid diet. I was allowed 3 protein shakes a day, sugar free (popsicle, pudding, jello), chicken broth, water, high protein Greek yogurt, and cream of soup drained. Was allowed to juice vegetable and fruits to drink. Each day was 900 calories. Lost about 20 pounds on the liquid diet. Surgery was less than 20 minutes long. They said my liver is very shrunk.
