Recently sleeved - with leg cramps

Sorry, I forgot to mention earlier. A lot of the popular protein shakes like Fairlife and Premier Protein have a pretty good amount of potassium in them. This makes sense because milk has quite a bit of potassium naturally. I assume you're drinking these since most people are early after surgery. If so, you may be getting more potassium than you think.

    Meal REPLACEMENT shakes

I use Quest brand Milk Shake Protein replacements with 45 grams of protein. I also get 30 grams of protein from various flavors of Premier Protein, these are both meal replacements. Be careful with anything bought in a store, make sure it has 3g or less of fat and 3 g or less of sugar, and make sure that they have NO added sugars. Gotta read the labels. I agree with SpartanMaker, you need to be very careful when looking for what you need in the guidelines you shared. That's page 19, I wonder if there are other dietary guidelines within your packet. Wishing you the best.

    Protein Powders

Herbalife has some clear protein powder that mixes well with no odd aftertaste. I do that when I need a break from Fairlife.
  4. 💪Huge congrats on your results. Looks like you'll be in the driver's seat and have the options available within your desired timeline I'm ignorant to the intricacies of the skin surgery but do have experience with your other question...in getting below the "obese" BMI labeling. It was a major rush...almost surreal. It was especially noted when I would go shopping for clothes. Being 6'4" and obese my normal stores were simply big & tall stores. Upon hitting closer to the normal height-weight range my options opened up exponentially. Felt pretty damn good to roll outa a dressing room and hand stuff back because it was too large. Too Large...wow. Life was a pile of fun living at that weight. A family health crisis occurred and it completely changed every aspect of life as I knew it. My health was such a distant concern as to have been off the radar for a few years. Getting back on the road towards normal height-weight range has been like riding a bike. All the tools, principles and prior methods are familiar and fairly easy to resume. The hardest part was getting my head wrapped around it. One thing I had to get firmly set in my mind was this: It is not selfish to focus on your own health, it is selfish not to. That is now hardwired in my noggin. . Keep on hitting those home runs. Winning always feels GREAT . 👍

    Herbalife

Good morning all... I have been getting bored with my protein shakes so for the last 2 weeks I have been going to this nutrition store to get a protein shake and tea every morning. The protein shakes and tea are made with Herbalife products. The shakes are 24 grams of protein, and the teas have a bunch of vitamins. What are your thoughts on using these as part of your plan...
  6. Hi, thanks for your response. How much protein do you suggest? *ill look into Sparten maker) I have always strugglled with protein. I was vegan for 18 years before surgery and afterwards I couldn't handle the beans etc. I used for protein. I had to add back in dairy and now my, the past 6mos, I have some chicken breast a couple times per week. I have a elliptical I use for exercise its a hard workout. I want to add back in DDP yoga for strength training. I have the issue if exercise making me do tired so I've struggled to add in more but I'd like to get up to an hour. I'll keep going and hopefully I'll start to lose again. My biggest issue is staying consistent, I get discouraged when I don't see results.

What's okay to make once you graduate to mush

We can buy these at M&S. I love them. 16 grams of protein and 99 cals a pack

Before and after. Baked Parmesan crusted chicken covered with garlic, spinach and tomato. That one breast is like 4 meals. Pea protein noodles are gross. 🤢

    Protein Powders

As far as powders are concerned, isopure would be my favorite. I don't really love any of them tbh for many of the reasons @WendyJane mentioned. The one place I do use the isopure is in smoothies. I find it works well there when mixed with fruit, so that's probably my goto post-workout drink. In terms of protein shakes, my favorites are probably any of the Fairlife brand drinks. I don't really use them very much anymore, but when I do need some extra protein and want it in liquid form, I do prefer the taste of Fairlife vs. others like premier protein. I also use Fairlife milk in place of regular to get a bit of an extra protein boost in my coffee, recipes, etc.

    Liquid intake increase

It's hard and we all went through it, but you need to prioritize fluids. It will get easier over time. The reason fluids are important is that dehydration is one of the most common reasons people end up back in the hospital post bariatric surgery. Yes, protein is important too, but at this point, as long as you're getting some protein, you'll be fine. Protein is prioritized over carbs and fat during extreme weight loss because it can help prevent catabolization of muscle. Hitting your protein goals does help some, but it's not the huge issue some people think it is. A lot of that mentality comes from the bodybuilding world where every ounce of muscle mass counts. The reason we don't want to lose a lot of muscle is because metabolically, muscle is more active than fat. I believe the net difference is roughly 6 calories, meaning if you lose 1 pound of muscle, vs lose 1 pound of fat, you'll burn about 6 calories less per day. Keep in mind that some loss of muscle is inevitable after bariatric surgery, so don't stress over it.

    Liquid intake increase

I was wondering, how am I able to raise my liquid intake if my stomach pouch doesn't allow more than 4 ounces sometimes 3 ounces per hour? I read that if we don't increase our protein intake it'll be a lot slower to lose weight. Maybe instead of drinking water a few more hours I should drink protein? I'm 3 weeks post op from a sleeve surgery
  12. Thank you everyone, I hadn't considered fighting for coverage. I made an appointment Tuesday to at least talk to a surgeon to discuss my symptoms, options etc. It isn't my original as while I liked him quite a bit, Baylor Scott and White will never get another dime of money from me. My other concern is that I am already coming into this low grade anemic but having to take the acid reducers so frequently also messes with the iron absorption so that has also been a concern in the back of my mind as well. My insurance doesn't cover any bariatric anything regardless of the plan, I even double checked today to see if just waiting and paying more for 2026 coverage would be an option but unless I get a new job with better coverage it's going to be fighting or Mexico.

    Having second thoughts

If you want to talk about it, join www.Barination.mn.co it is only $40/month and there are nutritionists, movement specialists, Licensed social workers, counselors and there is a lot of community and support groups that can help you through this difficult time. Something to think about anyway. I now pay less in food, so I put it towards my membership and knowing that Obesity thrives in Isolation, I joined the group and has been great. Just another way to obtain information, knowledge and deal with your fears. They do not make decisions for you, but asks great questions. Try it for one month, see how you like it. Just another option for discussions.
  14. You should ask your team what they recommend in terms of protein, but I shoot for 80 grams of protein or more. Protein is the key to "dieting" after surgery. It gives you satisfaction for longer periods of time during the day, and that means protein shakes, lean meats, and after you being to feel the difference, you can then add in about 1-2 ounces of veggies. Carbs are not on you plan if you want to lose weight. I would also recommend getting in more exercise, it it wears you out, it will until you keep pushing yourself and get used to it. The elliptical is a cardio workout, walking is just as good. Not fast, but at a good speed for a half hour every single day, it builds strength and it builds endurance and it is the simplest of exercises you can engage in. Because you get discouraged, I would encourage you to find the time to join in with people that are like you, BariNation has YouTube videos and they have a membership community. For forty dollars a month you have access to licensed social workers, therapists and dieticians, there are member meet ups all of whom have had surgery, revision to another surgery, or they have worked with bariatric patients for 2 decades. If you can afford it on a monthly basis, then I would strongly urge you to get involved. Take a look and see if you are interested. Wishing you the best!!

    Do I have a hernia?

A hernia seems really unlikely if it doesn't hurt. To me it sounds more like a keloid, but I agree that the best option is to ask your doctor about it.
  17. I got several boxes that are for Bariatric patients that have 3 compartments, one for the big protein and then the other two for veggies/fruits and carbs. I go to work with one for each meal every day I go to work and I have what I am allowed to eat and that's it. When it is gone, it is gone. If I get hungry later, I may have a snack and that snack is a Protein shake. I like Premier Protein, and through Amazon you can get the variety pack and they have "sweet" ones that curb the urge to go to any vending machine or reaching for the chocolate on your bosses desk. Or mine. I prep for the whole week on Saturday and Sundays. I will bake chicken and then weigh out the appropriate amount of chicken and put it in the box, then the veggies and then the carb. I have them stacked in the fridge so when I pack my lunch, I just grab one or two and 2 Protein Shakes and I'm set for my long day. Hope that helps!
  18. I read this a couple weeks ago and forgot until now to post about it. It's supposed to mimic gastric bypass without rerouting the digestive tract. I'm not sure how to feel about this minimally invasive implantable device. I previously had a Lap Band and it wasn't a pleasant experience. I guess if it makes it past clinical trials and gets approved, we'll see how patients do and if this is another option to end obesity and diabetes. Just thought I would share this with the community. https://www.jpost.com/business-and-innovation/tech-and-start-ups/article-713944

How to intake more protein and cals

I try to build in my habits with protein so I don’t have to think about it. I use the bariatric hot chocolate in my coffee every morning that’s 15 g of protein. I like 5% Faye yogurt. I do like protein shakes. Costco has chicken breast strips already prepared for you in 3 1/2 ounce servings for like 15 bucks, those are great go to snack where you don’t have to think much about it. It’s like 24 g of protein 140 cal. Premier protein makes a three pancake pack with 15 g of protein. That’s another easy breakfast grab with the hot chocolate in my coffee, which is delicious and pancakes. If I try to feed my kid that I’ll at least get one that’s 5 g of protein. Often times I end up eating all three. Also from Costco Amy Lou brand mix of chicken sausage for breakfast. I like to microwave that real quick six links I think 260 cal 24 g of protein. I will not get my protein if I have to rely on myself cooking it, I know that soI’m always on the lookout for a good clean quality of protein source with minimal calories and good taste.

What's okay to make once you graduate to mush

I was on a liquid diet then a full liquid diet. Followed by a soft protein only, so you are not weird about the no fruit and veggies. I have had no fruits or veggies yet and I'm only 5 weeks out from surgery. I'm still taking in soft protein. I did reward myself on Friday with a Pretzel and I made sure I softened it and chewed it a bunch before swallowing it, but having the crunch was so satisfying. That's the thing I miss most is the crunch. I had no puree diet following surgery. Soft protein, my go to is Ricotta Bake, and my husband makes it with spices and uses pizza sauce for further flavor. It is creamy and cheesy and really filling. So, just wanted to chime in that you are not alone in the no fruit/veggie department.
  21. Good evening everyone! I just ordered all of my vitamins for my post op August 7th! I noticed a lot of people go for chewable vitamins. I ordered all gel caps. Do people go for chewable because it's hard to swallow after the surgery? Is that a better option? TIA!

    Herbalife

Honestly Herbalife as a company has pretty a bad reputation, so I personally would steer clear. I'm also not a fan of soy protein (which I believe is what they use), so that to me is another red flag. A third red flag for me is the sheer number of ingredients in their protein powder. I'd rather have a cleaner product personally. At the end of the day, it's going to be better for you to use this and meet your protein goal vs. avoid it and not hit your protein goal. For me, I'd look elsewhere.

    All protein is now gross

If you find some protein shakes are okay except they are too sweet try mixing them with coffee. This helps a great deal. Cold or hot. I mix iced coffee with a premiere protein caramel shake and it’s like an iced coffee. I actually kept this habit after all the others went out the window from my sleeve because I like them so much. Well that and the premiere protein caffe latte shake. I just prefer to mix my own now because I do decaf coffee and the caffe latte has caffeine. Both options are good but I’d say the caramel with coffee is less sweet of the two if sweetness is the issue. Also, the change in taste for sweet is often temporary so try again in a month or two and keep checking because this most likely will go away at some point.
  24. Hydrolysed Whey Protein Isolate (also known as Whey Protein Hydrolysate), tends to dissolve a little better than regular non-hydrolysed whey, so that might be something to look for? The hydrolyzed version is also a bit more bioavailable, so that's also a good reason to choose it. Unfortunately it's typically more pricey, so keep that in mind. You can also look for "Clear Whey". As far as I know, clear whey is all whey protein hydrolysate, but you should double-check before buying anything. I don't really have any brand recommendations, but as long as it's pure 100% hydrolysed whey protein isolate, brand shouldn't matter. Plus, I don't know this for sure, but I've been told by others that most whey on the market is produced in just a few manufacturing plants and thus most of the "manufacturers" are not really making it themselves. They just contract out the work to one of these plants. My point is, I'm not sure there's a ton of difference between any of them. One caution here. No whey is going to dissolve well into hot liquids (like coffee). Think of it sort of like what happens when milk curdles if put into something really hot. What happens to whey is somewhat similar (the proteins start to clump), so the best bet in this instance is to dissolve it first into a little bit of cool water before adding it to anything hot.
  25. short answer: i didn't. i was not able to reach my prescribed protein goal, even with protein shake supplements (70g if my memory serves me correctly) regularly until about 3 months post op. and even after then, i probably only reached it daily about 85% of the time. during weight loss phase, i relied heavily on protein shakes. during maintenance and beyond, i get my protein from the regular stuff: meat fish/seafood dairy, etc. i also have a chicharron addiction, but i wouldn't advise it during weight loss phase (lotsa calories!) today (7-ish yrs post op) i"m "supposed" to be getting in 80g based on my current weight (103 lbs) and activity level (alot! ha)...but honestly i probably reach 80g in a day less than 50% of the time. and i seem perfectly fine. so i dunno. just do the best you can (your honest best, not your pretend best), i always say. nobody is perfect. and we are all so different that what work for me may not work for you. find what works for you and keep doing it until no longer does...then find something else that will. you may not be getting all your protein in, but if u are losing weight and all your labs come back satisfactorily, then why fix what aint broke?? sorry, just my self-supporting proverbial 2 cents. if my POV flavour is not for you, feel free to ignore... good luck❤️
