Weight gain diring hospital post-op?
Miss Mac replied to Huggies123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes...what she said! I was in the hospital for a couple of days earlier this month for a diarrhea /nausea / passing out issue. In two days I gained seven pounds so frustrating. There was so much Fluid in my body that I thought I was going to pop like a balloon. I went in to the ER about 5 p.m. and a guy from dietary came to my room before bedtime, and asked me to fill out the menu thing for the next day. I explained to him that I had weight loss surgery 8 months ago and am on a high Protein (80 grams a day) and maximum 800 calories. My Breakfast was that fakey a** scrambled egg s**t, a large muffin with cinnamony streussel top, toast, oatmeal, and sweetened apple juice. I foget what lunch was but it was starchy and unremarkable - geeze louize! -
does the team have a NUT? the A1c is a 3 month value - so if they have to postpone keep trying. you may need medication or a medication change to bring this about. keep pursuing it. the most important things I learned when I was a diabetic is to always have a Protein whenever you have a carb. go as low carb as you can now. the truth is that is very hard when you are a diabetic. it's really easy to say and hard to do. but the more protein less carbs will help - but it is a value that takes time. when I was a diabetic I could eat very little fruit. so veg and lean protein as much as possible. and realize they have this rule for your safety. If they want that number lower it is so you can have a good, safe recovery.

Percentage of fat in diet, a concern?
The New Kel posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, I am 5 weeks out, and following a high Protein, very low carb, no sugar diet of soft foods. I log everything into MyFitnessPal. I am wondering about your thoughts on the amount of fat in my diet. From the pie graphs on my app I see my fat consumption is about 25-45 percent of the days calories. My Protein is about 40-45 percent. Could fat intake be a reason for slower weight loss? I'm on day 14 of a stall. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for the help! diet macros.pdf -

I am new to this so I am really not sure what to say?? I guess I will start with I am 38yrs. old with 3 children and have battled obesity most of my life. I had the Lap-band surgery in June '08 and without much complications. My biggest obstacle is getting enough protein in so that is why I turned to here for some recommendations. Any suggestions are welcomed!!!

All Over Post Op Problems
Bbyblueyez replied to debbie813's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm feeling the same way. I'm regretting getting the surgery... The thought of my protein powder and protein shakes makes me nauseas. Im struggling to get my protein in and fluids too. Im in week 3. Thank god I at least just got mushy food back. It's helping, but I need to get in my protein. Im going to call the doc tomorrow and see about getting some nausea meds. Today the smell of everything made me nauseas. I cried tonight because I'm not sure what I got myself into. I go back to work tomorrow, so I am hoping to get my mind off everything. But I'm worried and trying to figure out how the hell in going to get 80 grams of protein in... -

Having a TOUGH time getting in Protein
Bohemian101 replied to TheRevisionedVagabond's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon's office has a nifty little store in the front with Protein shakes, bars, Soups, Snacks etc so you can try out different things to see what you like before you order a whole box of something. I saw these little packets of LiquaCel concentrated protein and grabbed a few. They are really tiny and come in flavors like watermelon, grape, orange, and mango. I add them to my Water or even to skim milk which takes like a creamsicle if you use the orange flavor. They have 16g protein in each pack and my friend told me she uses them to add in when she makes sugar free Jello as well. I recently saw them on the site that I buy my Multivitamins, so picked up a whole pack. I also did better with the sugar free carnation instant Breakfast (in the blue box) than I did with protein shakes. The protein shakes reminded me of a pepto bismol consistency. lol I'd mix a packet in my ninja with skim milk and 2 ice cubes and it was kind of like a thin chocolate shake with no aftertaste. I rely on unflavored protein too and just throw some in whatever Soup or yogurt I'm eating for a protein boost. -
How much depends on what you're able to tolerate. I had 4 oz of lite ricotta cheese for breakfast (140 cals) and 4 oz chicken salad for lunch on 2 Wasa crackers (200 cals) and a protein shake (90 cals). For dinner, I am having 6 oz flounder (300 cals) with some soft veggies (100 cals) and 4 oz mashed potatos (100 cals). For dessert later tonight, I'm having a sugar-free pop (130 cals). Does that help?

I've been having 1 of the New Whey protein drinks everyday. They are more like a shot of protein, size wise, but are packed with 42g of protein. They are disgusting to taste, but worth it if you can down it really quick followed by a chaser of crystal light or something to get the taste out of your mouth.

My doctor says no "mindless" snacking. If you are really physically hungry you can snack. Like it was mentioned above, til you get the right restriction you aren't going to stay 'full' between meals. I had the same problem. I got full on relatively small amounts of food but the fulness didn't last until the next meal. I asked the nutritionist the same question you asked in this post and she said as long as the snack was food we should be eating (not cookies or ice cream but a form of protein) snacking wasn't bad. Once you are at the right restriction you should try not to snack but it is much easier (I am finally there!)

Today I Learned.......
AllForMy4 replied to retired-loser's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 5 weeks out and deal with the same thing. Although I am doing good lately about getting in my protein,it all comes from shakes mostly. I eat maybe 2 ozs of food on a good day. I really hope I can start eating more soon bc I know I am not getting close to the recommended amount of calories in that I should be daily and it is giving me a slow(but steady) weight loss. I think I would be losing more if I could up my calories a bit and get my body out of starvation mode. lol. -
@@susancae you are not alone. There are and have been many who have posted that they "cheated" on their pre-op and even some who have cheated post op!! This whole process is very hard, it's a change to something that you have been used to for a long time and it doesn't happen over night. The reason for the pre-op diet is an important one. Some of it is physiological and has to deal with shrinking your liver and other organs prior to surgery and the other is mental/emotional and behavioral. These last ones are the most difficult hurdles WLS patients have to overcome. Even after surgery these are issues that will remain with us long after the operation. So going through these steps pre-op will help you to get through the post op period where cheating is NOT an option, and make it into a life style change that you can live with it for the rest of your life. If you cheat during the pre-op you are only cheating yourself. If you cheat enough you may be denied surgery even down to the moment of surgery if you have not achieved what your surgeon wanted you to. Yes you can make mistakes during this time with minimal damage. Now is the time to learn and make those mistakes, but really attempt to rein yourself in and adjust to get back on track and not nibble that food while cooking. Those are habits that you need to break now because in the long run they are going to make things much much harder for you. Cheating post op can seriously damage your internal organs so don't do it!! Learn today and make your mistakes now. Learn how to combat those mistakes and put a plan together to help yourself when you find yourself grazing or "cheating". What works for me when I am making dinner, is to enjoy a nice cup of coffee with one of those international or flavored creamers. I get the sugar free one, not the fat free one though now they have both sugar free and fat free. I enjoy that much like a "treat" while I am making dinner and it keeps me from needing or wanting to eat while I am drinking and preparing the meal. Often I work late and by the time I start cooking I am ravenous and this really helps me. You can do the same with tea if you are not a coffee drinker and you can use decaf as well. Good luck I"m sure you can and you will do this!

I am 5 weeks out today and thought I was doing pretty well. Nothing I have eaten has really caused me problems. My problem is making sure I get enough calories, specifically Protein into my diet. This weekend I had a couple days where I felt really nauseous......day and night. No new foods added; couldn't figure out what the problem was. After much back-tracking I realized that I had not eaten much those two days, and NOT eaten enough protein. The next day, I made sure I ate enough protein, and ate more frequently. Ta-da...no nausea! OK....lesson learned. I HAVE to eat...and that's a new one for me .

Cheating : 5 week's Post Op - Please Please Help
BBWDiva posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am five weeks post op. I am meant to be on a Protein only diet and I have been cheating. Every morning I wake up and say I am going to stay on program but by 4:00pm I have fallen back into my bad habits. I have not eaten a meal and I am not hungry but I start picking off the kids plates and by 9:00pm realize all I have done is picked at foods (grazed) from 4:00pm. I need a little help and advice. I know some people are thinking why have the surgery if your gonna cheat, I did not plan on cheating. Anyone not able to dump bad habits right off to bat ? (I have lost 25ibs) -
Cheating : 5 week's Post Op - Please Please Help
SeriouslyChange replied to BBWDiva's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is hard to change from one day to another. We didn't gain all this weight overnight. Try to eat Protein only. What helps me is making snack bags to carry with me when on the go. Then I have something to eat. If you cheat, eat just a taste, not the whole plate. Don't deny yourself because you'll over indulge. But don't allow yourself to binge either. It's a fine line to walk. -

4 weeks out and questions about feeling full.
SweetnLow posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I am 4 weeks out and I really don't feel hungry but when I eat I don't feel full. I left the hospital on a pureed diet. I am now eating 3 meals a day which consist of 2 tbsp of finely diced or pureed chicken, fish, crab or scallop, Greek yogurt, cheese 2 tbsp of either pureed/mashed fruit or vegetable. 1 tsp of promise margarine or canola oil per meal to ensure I am getting enough Alpha Lineolic acid. I am also drinking 2 Protein Shakes per day. I have not had any problem with any food I have tried. I guess I should feel lucky but this also scares me a little. (I haven't tried beef yet as my doctor says no beef for 6 months). The only time I felt full was when I was in a hurry and drank my whole Protein Shake 8oz in about 10 minutes with out thinking. I felt somewhat uncomfortable but not in pain. I usually drink my Protein shake in 20 to 30 minutes with no problem. It seems there are a lot of members who are having issues with keeping foods down, fullness, etc. I am scared that my pouch is too big and I will have problems later. Is there anyone out there who had no issues at all and has done well long term with weight loss. I just need some assurance. -
Ok so I am now 6 days post op and first day back at work. I had really hoped I would feel better than I do right now. I feel over all Lethargic and sore. I have a tinge of nausea constantly. I have no real appetite and have to force myself to drink the protein shakes. I am supposed to start incorperating mushies into my diet tonight or tomorrow. On a bright side I am down 26 lbs since I started my pre surgery diet. Another issue I do have is Diahrreah! I guess it is liquid in liquid out but it is getting old! Are the feelings I am having normal?

so confused and upset at week 2 with weight loss
jallsop replied to liguy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery the same day u did. I came home from the hospital weighing 16lbs more than I did the day of surgery due to all the IV fluids. I was 236 DOS, 252 day of hospital d/c and at 2 wks out I am 221. I have been on liquid diet w some puréed food but I really haven't eaten much. I am really struggling to get my protein and fluids in so congrats to u!!!! The one thing that struck me about what u wrote is all the exercise u are doing. I haven't even been cleared to exercise yet, see my surgeon Wednesday for 2 wk postop. Just today I went to the gym for the first time and just walked the treadmill at 2.5 for 30 min. Just be careful and I'm wondering if the extra exercise and few calories being taken in could actually be working against u. Well I wish u only the best of luck! This sure is a bit of a challenge to figure out, isn't it!!??? -
Total carbs verses net carbs
csawesome replied to csawesome's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I like the idea of net carbs much better. I don't see me eating a lot of non fiber carbs for a while, but I was suprised to learn how many there in dairy products. I think I will be drastically weaning down on those as I move onto dense Proteins. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk -
2 weeks post-op exercises
DaleCruse replied to Old2NewMe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're doing great! Keep going! Try adding other exercises little by little. Do a sit up. If that doesn't feel good, you're not ready. If it feels okay, do two tomorrow, three the next day. Consider free weights & weight machines. If you can walk, try picking up the pace. There are so many options! Good luck! -
I am a couple days past two weeks post op and still in the liquid phase. Every time I drink a Protein shake I get a stomach ache. I am not drinking too much. Is my stomach just not tolerating anything or is something wrong? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

2 Weeks Post Op Stomach Pain
suzzzzz replied to sill21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many people develop an intolerance after surgery. My surgeon said it can be temporary or permanent. Maybe try another protein shake with different ingredients to see if it still happens.
