Just brought this up to my nutritionalist today. Not enough liquids, not enough protein, blood pressure could drop or since I am diabetic could be low blood sugar. There is a list now we have to figure it out.

When I attended my orientation, the bariatric coordinator explained that we would have to choose between the two and we pick them. The Dr uses both and it's up to the patient. I have been running searches but to no avail. When they passed both around the room, the differences that stood out to me were the way the band inflates. The Lap Band has sectioned pieces on the ring and the Realize has one continuous band (non perforated) if that makes any sense. My question is - Did others have options between the two? Are there pros and cons to each? Are they the same in results? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

My dr uses a 34fr over sewn. I had no problems getting liquid in immediately (after leak test of course). No pain when swallowing. And I have great restriction on dense protein now. I am very happy with my sleeve.

Shake Question!
shedo82773 replied to tearsofapache's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Like said above...it is expensive to buy everything that you need to be successful. It is very important that you reach the goals of protein and take your Vitamins. Why take a chance with your health if you can't get everything needed. Ramen noodles are high calorie low Protein if any at all. But...if you don't eat the noodles and maybe add egg to it. I don't know. They are really pretty much junk. Also, does your Dr. know that you can't afford everything that you need? Please be careful. -
I am six weeks out, and I lost some hair during the first three weeks, but it is growing back. I try to make sure that I get enough Protein and healthy fats (olive oil, nuts) in my diet, and I try to remember to take my Vitamins. The Vitamin part is a challenge because they are chewables and taste like chalk. After I'm done with this bottle I am switching brands. Don't worry. If you end up losing a little hair, it is a small price to pay to be leaner and healther!

Well after reading your last sentence. "which I DEFINATLY do not want to be pregnant.." I say call your Doc & your GYN immediately! Your also right that you shouldn't get pregnant right after surgery but that seems to be the least of the worries right now. Call your Doctors & discuss your options. I hope everything turns out the way you want it to. Good Luck!

Revision from sleeve to bypass- questions.
lucielu replied to lucielu's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thank you for the responses! It is just hard to wrap my head around what the changes will be like and trying to prepare the best I can. I'm going to get my preop scheduled soon and ask to see a dietician. I really went off my diet plan during COVID and need to just start all over. I need a refresher! For now I'm just trying to focus on water intake and more protein. I can't wait to be done with this GERD, I can't take it anymore. -
**sorry this one's a long one!!!!** Hello everybody, I had an appt with my doctor a few days ago for follow up on my bloodwork and ultrasound on my gallbladder because she thought I might have needed to get my gallbladder removed. Turns out all my labs were perfect, no gallbladder problems but I did have a little bit of a higher cholestoral and I found out that I also have Fatty Liver [emoji45][emoji45] we discussed how it happens and how you treat it and basically... She said I have to lose weight. I finally brought up weight loss surgery to her. She wrote down everything she could to try to get me to get approved. She wrote down how long I've tried diets, what diets I've tried, morbid obesity (she said if she just out obesity it wouldn't get approved), body pains, asthma, etc and she put in a referral for surgery. Since I have medi-cal I guess the referral goes to a referall center then it goes to the bariatric surgeon or bariatric program or something like that and I'm supposed to hear a call back within two weeks. My doctor said the program is going to take 3-4 months and that I can't do it through her, I have to do it through the bariatric office I guess. Like my nutrition appointments and things like that can't be through my personal doctors office. Anyways, I am super excited and hoping I get good news soon! On a side note the bariatric office/surgeon that the people in my county get reffered to (I'm in the central Valley of CA btw) has horrible reviews and someone who went to him is dealing with horrible complications. I do not want that to be me... Is there anyway that I can go to a different county to get surgery but still have it covered by medi-cal? If that place is my only option then I will hold off on surgery until I move or until I can pay out of pocket I guess [emoji45]🤦🏻♀️ If anyone has any info that would be great, thanks so much.

A few questions from a pre-op if you don't mind
pnwguy replied to Wires's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I drink up until my first bite as well and typically wait at least 45 minutes before drinking anything more then a sip to rinse my mouth. Immediately post op for the first month I used the Bariatric Advantage Protein powder, but have after I got on soft foods, I switched to a single ready to go Protein shake (Premier Protein from Costco) which I drink halfway between Breakfast and lunch. I didn't puree anything either (puree actually wasn't on my plan) - for me it was 3 days of Clear liquids, then 2 weeks of full liquids, then 2 weeks of soft foods, then back to regular food as tolerable. As far as Snacks, at this stage I find I do need to snack a bit between meals in order to get in my recommended protein. A snack for me is usually something like a cheese stick or a Danon Light and Fit yogurt (12g protein,80 cal!) My surgery team didn't outlaw caffeine out right, just to cut back. Immediately after surgery I didn't have any caffeine until I was on regular foods. At this point I usually have one Americano every other day or so. I use Crystal light powder or other flavor liquids in my Water.. post op I find I can't drink water as well when it is plain. For movies, I only get a water, and maybe take in a Protein Bar and eat half of it. I'm staying away from popcorn until I get to my goal. -
I just ate 14.5 oz of little chocolate pudding for breakfast. That kinda blows the 3-4 oz a hour out the window.....did I just screw up or are those little puddings not 14.5 total? I'm stocking with my protein shake for the rest of the day but I'm confused. -Virginia

Diet has another 4 days of 2 oz, clear liquids X 3 daily, and , then some small bits solid added, same 2 oz. X3 daily, which is my stage 2 it has no puree, but cut up 2 0z. meals of egg, yogurt and cottage cheese, week 2 add fish, week 3 add chicken, week 4 add beef and cheeses. On 1/22/13 work out higher number for protein working the same method. But no carbs, bread, cereal, or fruits, least or no sugars or fats all the way throuigh.

They have me doing 2 Protein shakes a day that are under 200 cal and have at least 15gm of protein and 1 meal under 300 cal, under 15 carbs and over 15gm of protein for days 1-7 of the pre-op diet. Then on days 8-13, I will do 4 of those shakes a day, no solid food, then Clear liquids only in Day 14- the day before surgery. I'm on Day 6. I 'm glad its getting a little better. Days 3 and 4 were the worst,

I agree with RJ...Revs is a great gal. She eloquently states her case and sometimes, in the rants section, will go off. She will defend her position and laughs at herself. Another side of Revs...She is a great supporter of the people on this site. When I was just trying to figure out if I wanted to have surgery, I came to this forum and asked the redundant questions. She didn't berate me for asking, she helped me and gave me advice. She will help anyone - she's a great gal with an incredible writing talent - some may disagree with her statements, but that's OK; we don't all have to agree with everything everyone says. It's in the rants section - rant back if you want! And just as we all have the right to not answer the millionth question on the best Protein shake, we all have the right to ignore this particular thread. Have a great Friday everyone...Keep posting, keep responding. We are all bound by this incredible journey (sorry, Revs, I couldn't resist). We are one big dysfunctional family - some days we play in the sand box nicely, some days not so much. Sending much love to everyone.

Most of the food you mention is really good for you. Yams are loaded with nutrients which can be difficult to find in many other foods. Beans are an excellent source of fibre. And spinach is low in calories and one of the best single sources of nutrition around! And both skinless chicken and fish are great sources of Protein. Nutritionists say that the best food is the food which is prepared from fresh ingredients. It seems to me that if you reduce the amount of rice, flour, and oil you will do very well on an African diet.

For the love of sweet Jesus.....
I will what I want replied to Madam Reverie's topic in Rants & Raves
I have read through this entire thread again to see If my remarks were off. Even as I read them again, Its clear to me my remark about "jerks" wasn't pointed at anyone in particular. However, in the context and flow of the thread I can see how it could have been read as me calling MR a jerk. It was a newbie mistake for me not to make it clear that I wasn't dissing her. So to MR and those who love her, I am sorry. Please let me know what else I need to do or say to clean this up with you. (Please don't ask for a 20 page paper that compares and contrasts protein shakes???? because then I'd have to start a Rant about that and we could get caught in some sort of Star Trek infinity time loop. And you know what a pain those are! -
I Finally Have A Surgery Date For Gastric Bypass
channing28105 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I finally got a Surgery Date for my Gastric bypass I am getting my Gastric bypass on Tuesday July 24, 2012. I start on a Full liquid Diet on July 10, 2012 where I have whey Protein drinks at Breakfast, lunch and dinner. I can have some Soups like tomato , Cream of mushroom Soup and I can have some pudding and if I want something soldi I can have Carrots, tomatoes and Celery. I have my Pre-Op appointment on June 25, 2012. I would like prayers and I would like to have a Diet Buddy and I will want to know what to do 1. What Should I do If I am having Vomiting that lasts for several hours 2. What Should I Do If I am having Diarrhea for several hours I know that you can experience these things after having Gastric Bypass. I have some more questions: 1. If you have vomiting that lasts for several hours do you have to get to the hospital even if it means calling 911? 2. If you have diarrhea for several hours do you have to get to the hospital even if it means calling 911? Right now I Vomit with my Heartburn or GERD. Has anyone ever had Heartburn or GERD where they Vomited with their Heartburn or GERD? Did you do things like Belch with your Heartburn or GERD? I am looking for email pen pals that have gone through Gastric Bypass that can be my diet buddy that I can share my weight with. I am wanting to try to lose some weight on my own before the pre0op. I like pen pals that can answer short letters with questions like: 1. Do you have any pets? 2. Do you like music? 3. What type of music do you like? I would appreciate it if my questions about What to do about Vomiting and Diarrhea that lasts for several hours after Gastric Bypass is answered and my questions about Heartburn or GERD and pen pals is answered. If you know the answers to my questions please let me know I would appreciate it. Channing -
I am a hugely picky eater and have been having a really hard time with the ready to drink Protein shakes. I am in my full liquids stage and I am also having problems drinking as much as I should. My mom was experimenting with some fresh strawberries (I love fresh fruit!) and came up with this protein rich shake: 1/2 container strawberry yogurt (3g protein) 1 container strawberry Greek yogurt (12-15g protein depending on brand) 1/2 cup of milk (2-3g protein) 10 strawberries 1/2 bottle of vanilla Pure Protein shake (10g protien) 3-4 tablespoons of fresh squeezed orange juice Blend together. Add more milk or orange juice to make it thinner. Mine is pretty thick but as I'm on liquids only right now, it's also pretty filling. But finally something with a good amount of protein that doesn't make me gag! The Pure Protein Drink gives it the slightest hint of vanilla and I don't have the nasty protein taste!

bread pasta and pizza will expand. If I am craving pasta I overcook it and onlly eat 1oz portion and it still takes me forever to eat it. I either add clams or chicken for the protein. Pizza still bothers me. I eat the topping off of it and that is it. I have not eaten one piece of bread since surgery

I'm on facebook too under Angela Bottles. Feel free to messenger me. My doctor is Dr Marr. Have you gotten your approval from insurance yet? I just had my pre-op appointment last week & the diet so far has been pretty easy (lost 156 lbs in 6 months), but the pre-op diet the week before of 3 Protein drinks a day us going to be the hardest as I just don't like them. In the end it will all be worth it. Sent from my SM-G920P using the BariatricPal App

Great stories everyone!:thumbs_up:I do okay (for me at least since I'm still struggling a bit) until I am out of town and go out to eat at a very nice restaurant. Their desserts are always soooo good. I just did not pass up that carrot cake even though I knew better. I did take half of it with me and ate it for breakfast the next morning. Can I count it as a veg for carrots, protein from nuts, and milk for the cream cheese frosting? Anyway, it was good and I am back home so no more carrot cake. It was really good until I stepped on the scale this morning. Happy weight loss to everyone.

I've never done this before so here it goes. I'm 1 week post op and yesterday I felt like I had turned a corner. I have little pain left under my incision though my skin is still numb. I ate an egg (substitute) today and boy was it tasty. Even 45 minutes later, cold, it still was good. It felt good to chew. I've reviewed my diet and am not getting enough protein in. I bought Herbal Life protein drink and started on that instead of Carnation. It has 30 more calories but way more protein. I drank them pre-banding to help loose weight. Back then I could make it with ice and add different flavors. I'll have to get use to the taste without the extra. I'm finding that hunger feeling now and again. Is that normal? I'm worried my band isn't tight enough. Is anyone else experiencing that? Well I hope I get some responses. As I said, I've never blogged before.

Hi Canna, sounds like your doing great! Not sure about the hunger pains? My dr gives fill at time of surgery. Iam 2 post op and have 4cc's in a 10cc band. Iam going next sat for another fill! He's quite aggressive so I feel NO hunger. Try to get all your protein in. Its SO important. Protein drinks will also help you feel full and satisfied. Keep up the good work
