  1. That's the first I've heard of that everything I've read doesn't mention anything like that. The complications of bypass compared to the sleeve is my biggest issue.
  2. I lost 150 pounds after the sleeve surgery. Then I encountered some health complications (not sleeve related) in 2016. I wasn't able to exercise, had no energy, and wasn't really watching what I was eating. Because of that I "rebounded" about 30 pounds. I went back to the weight management clinic because I wanted to stop it before I regained any more. The doctor gave me a prescription of phentermine, and it "jump started" my weight loss. I was able to stop the regain and shed about 10 pounds that I had regained. I will say though, that I think the benefit for me was mostly mental. After a couple months I realized I really didn't feel any differently on the phentermine than off of it. I went off of it at that pont and lost the rest of my regain by going back to the bariatric diet strictly. Hope that helps!

    Just Went Shopping

This is EXACTLY how I feel. Although I HAVE had surgeries before they were minor (carple tunnel and other hand surgeries) I am VERY afraid of the surgery and possible complications more than anything else. I really think everything will be ok. I tend to worry about things needlessly. Good luck!!!

    May surgeries

My Surgery date is May 22. I previously had a lap band which was removed in October after I developed complications. I had initially lost ~60 lbs. with the band but regained it due to the band issues. The insurance specialist initially told me right after removal she didn't think the new surgery would be approved. But we scheduled a follow up for February to at least try. The surgeon submitted with all the backup needed and I was approved right away. Surprised and happy to be getting a 2nd chance. The insurance I have now technically doesn't cover batiatric surgery, but I'm guessing since I had the LB they are considering this medically necessary especially with my other diagnosis'. I have mostly maintained since October. +\-5 I had a cruise booked for April so decided to push the surgery until May. Wishing now I'd just done the RNY the first time.
  5. Wow. I must be a freak. LOL. I don't know, I'm not worried about not losing weight, etc. I'm worried about the immediate complications and side effects related to the surgery. Yes, for sure, I have been reading post-op complications board and they are distressing, but I'm not as concerned with that. Good luck to all of you! I'm sure I will be in and out as I go through this.

    3 days post op

I did have laparoscopic. No complications at all. I'm still having some gas pains but mostly when I drink. I'm day four out and the pain has gotten a little better, just not as much as everyone else's does! I guess I'm the exception to every rule lol.

    Just the beginning...

I am about 9 months post-op (gastric bypass in June 2016) and I had similar complications plus an infection at the surgical site. I was out of commission for longer but I anticipated and the pain was unreal but the outcome was positive. I started my journey at 277 lbs (highest), pre-op weight 267 lbs and I am now at 199.7 lbs. Unfortunately due to stress and emotional eating my weight has begun to creep up again and I'm terrified that I messed myself up. I've read about the pouch reset and I'm beginning that tomorrow because I didn't go thru all of this to go back and gain all the weight back.
  8. When I first looked into bariatric surgery, I considered Mexico. My reasoning was "why wait months for insurance to approve me when I can pay the same amount after insurance covers it and get it done sooner?" But then after researching complications, it makes me feel a lot better choosing to get it done here in the states. Complications can occur with any surgery, so knowing my surgeon would be close in case something happened makes me feel a lot better. Plus I was told by a sleever who went to Mexico and had complications that her insurance refused to cover the costs to fix her complications because she went to Mexico. Best of luck to you & whatever decision you make !

    Any More Sixties?

I was sleeved on Feb 28 No complications I'm 69 My weight loss is very slow compared to a lot of others I read about I was very discouraged and finally found some literature which addresses Bariatic surgery in the "elderly (above age 60) patient" The abstract concludes that weight loss is slower in this group At no time pre-op, was I told this. I've done a lot of self-teaching!!

    3 month liquid diet

Oh right. Dr. Ian Scott is an internist. He is a fantastic one as well. I saw him after I got approval from case manager+psychologist+dietitian, and right before I saw Dr. Gil. I even asked Dr. Scott to be our family doctor but because of his practice he couldn't. The guy is very aggressive at treating any other complications you have. For me, it was fractures in my L5/S1 vertebra. My ex-family doctor wouldn't do f**k all about my severe back pain, Dr. Scott took a very aggressive approach and I've been getting facet joint injections into my spine every 3 months (after X-rays and MRI), with a pre-assessment to getting the nerve ablation done which lasts much longer. Before him I had trouble doing more than 1000 steps a day due to immense back pain (like bring-you-to-your-knees back pain), and because of his treatment I now average between 3000-9000 steps a day. It's always fantastic to find the doctors/physicians/specialists who are as aggressive at getting you back on your feet as you want to be. Likewise we found a family doctor (when we moved from (NW/NE to SW) down the street from his home office who is extremely good too.

    Nightmares

I had my surgery November 28, 2016. It's interesting that you mention the nightmares because I had them, too. Only mine were after surgery for the first few weeks. Maybe it was the anesthesia or just the small amount of pain, since I didn't take any pain meds? Also my surgery was complicated by a failed gastric plication that caused a blockage and caused a lot of tissue death. In any case, they stopped and I'm doing great! I hope everyone who experienced them got past them and you're all doing well!
  12. There is a lot of misinformation in this thread. Since @Proud2BMe seems to be the only person over 1 year post op to post. He is the only person that offered a realistic answer. I'm 20 months post-op. I could eat all the mashed potatoes and gravy. They are a slider. Luckily I hate mashed potatoes. I could eat all the stuffing, another slider. I could probably eat all of the veggies too. Noticed I started with sliders and kept going with sliders. If I started with the turkey with no gravy, I would just be able to eat the turkey, nothing else. Since the turkey has gravy on it, I might be able to eat something else. It just depends. When you see people at 2 to 5 years post op and they have regained, do you think theyou regained on protein shakes and dense protein? No, they regained on sliders. I can eat basically infinite amounts of chips or cookies if I want. They offer no restriction. As time goes on and you learn your sleeve and what slides through you learn what you can eat. I can eat an entire bag of baby spinach in one sitting. Salad greens are a slider. A good slider but a slider. The idea that you are only going to be able to eat one cup of food for the rest of your life is completely ridiculous and totally false (unless you have some kind of complications like a stricture and even those people can eat a lot of sliders and usually do since sliders are easier for them than dense protein.).
  13. I'm post lap band surgery and while I've been losing at a slow/consistent rate, I'm experiencing a symptom the past 2 weeks. As background.. Soon after the surgery and adequate fills, I had been experiencing lower gas which has been more embarrassing than anything else. My surgeon explained that the gas had to go somewhere so I didn't think it was serious. I also had trouble pooping more from the ability to push it out. I adapted my diet and that seemed to help but not prevent. I was fearful that pushing too hard would be harmful; so as gross as it sounds, I used my finger to expell. Now, I have chronic diarrhea that inconsistently comes and goes without any other symptoms or rationale for why. Any insight?

    Getting nervous

I haven't had my surgery yet. I am having my sleeve done in June. Did you have a sleeve? Or bypass? How are you doing? I'm so afraid of complications.

    Time Off Work

I had six weeks off due to a slight complication, otherwise it would have been four weeks.

    6 Week Check Up

Just visited with my surgeon today. I was in a week long stall so I thought I was gonna go in there and hear some kind of reprimand that I hadn't lost enough weight! Felt like I was going to the principal's office:-). Well, not so. They made me feel like I just broke through the banner on the football field. I was surprised how wonderful it felt to have people who do this every day so excited and proud of me. -29 pounds in 6 weeks. I know I'm not the best but they sure made me feel like it. I have 52 lbs more to lose. Since I feel great with no complications I was given more advice than medical care. My surgeon told me that family and friends care about me and begin to make comments about my weight loss. Things like, "You've lost too much weight, you need to stop." Or "You're too skinny, you need to put on a few pounds." He said, they're not used to seeing me at a healthy weight and it can be a little scary for them. They're not intentionally sabotaging me but it can. He used an example. If someone you love kept telling you that your haircut does not flatter your face how long would it take you to get your hair in a new cut? Or put you at you're ideal weight in a room with 10 strangers and every one of them will say you look healthy. His advice. I am to listen to one person about my weight then he pointed at himself and said "me". I almost wanted to cry at his sincerity. So why share here? Because it's good advice for all of us. When it comes to your health your Surgeon is the best one to tell you what your healthy weight is. Not you're mm, sister, brother or spouse. Go to your follow up appointments even if it feels like you're going to the principal's office. Take care.

    Weight gain 2-days post op

What everyone else said. I had a prolonged hospital stay due to complications but once I was home I think I was up 10 lbs from my surgery day. It'll drop off quick enough. We're all excited to see the scale start moving but every individual will lose weight differently. Don't get caught up comparing yourself to everyone else. Focus on healing, getting in your protein & water, and moving as much as possible.

    Side Effects and Complications

I had it done 5 months ago and have had no complications at all . I don't get reflux , diarreah or dumping (apart from 2 weeks after surgery when i tried a piece of chicken while i was still on pureed food 😱). I was 310 lbs at my heaviest. 301 when i started my pre op 2 week diet. 288 on surgery day. Now 223 lb. There are is no food I can't tolerate. I was 55 on the day of surgery, feeling 70. I now feel like my age again now! I was diabetic with high BP. Now diabetes blood tests and BP are in normal range. I was a size UK 26 (US 22) and am already , just 5 months later, in a UK 18 (US 14). BMI at present is 36 and it was 50. I wish I'd done this sooner when i was less obese . When i first considered it, age 50, I was 270 lbs ...... then in 5 years on went another 32lb! Go for it, you won't regret it 😁 PS hair loss was minimal and not noticeable , saggy skin i much prefer rather than my fat skin!

    Side Effects and Complications

I had MGB on 12/12/16. I have had no complications. I have had no acid reflux issues. I do take a Protonix every day but that's simply because I have LPRD (laryngopharyngeal reflux disease or silent reflux) and I haven't gotten a checkup with my ENT doctor. My surgeon also gave me some omeprazole to take after surgery when I was discharged. I started taking the Protonix after I ran out of the omeprazole. I have lost 51 lbs so far and am almost in onederland. My heaviest weight was 298 lbs. My pre-op diet weight was 259.2 lbs. My surgery weight was 247 lbs. My current weight is 201 lbs. My goal weight is 145 lbs. I am 5'7" tall. I get nauseous at times but it doesn't last long. I'm not sure why it happens but it doesn't happen often. I have dumped once right after surgery on my way home. I bought the wrong Gatorade drink and took a few sips. Almost immediately I started to feel light headed and dizzy and just generally bad. I figured it out pretty quickly. I tried to pour water into the Gatorade but that didn't work so I just threw it away and got something else. The thing that has worked for me is having an eating schedule and keeping in touch with my surgeon and my NUT. They have helped me tremendously to make sure I am making progress. I hope my experience helps you make a decision. Having this surgery is one of the best decisions I have ever made. [emoji2][emoji41][emoji3]

Old bestfriend Is back, and hes married..

If he's going to cheat on her, he's probably going to cheat on you also. The baby complicated things bc there's that bond. You'd feel guilty with yourself if he left his wife and baby for you. Don't let him put you in that position.
  23. I'm a nurse on a med surg unit. I was told to anticipate 4 weeks. They said it's easier to get a note to come back early than request through hr to extend my time off unless of course there are complications. They said they usually don't have anyone go over 4wks off.
  24. I'm in the process of scheduling myself for Mini Gastric Bypass for May 15th. I have read as much as I could find on the procedure and all the various side effects, but I'm very interested in hearing that information from people who have actually had the surgery, not a research article or summary of the procedure. Do people have trouble with acid reflux, how have you treated it and was it effective? Any ulcers or any other side effects? I'm not morbidly obese, but have been quite heavy my entire life. I'm 50 years old, and have finally decided to do something for myself. However, I'm having second thoughts and would appreciate input from anyone about any unpleasant side effects.
  25. I was 55 when I had my RNY in January 2016. When I started the journey six months earlier, I weighed 275 -- not the highest weight in my life but pretty close. I couldn't walk around the block without my back hurting. My surgery was on a Wednesday. I was home on thursday and back working the following week. I was tired but had no real complications. I've always been healthy and have healed quickly. I have lost almost 120 pounds. And I've turned into a fitness nut. :-) The two things just kind of went together. You have to start of slowly. The place i had my surgery has a trainer, who has been great. She gave me very realistic exercises and helped me gradually work up to higher levels. Now I lift weights three to four days a week and walk about 15,000 steps a day as well as ride a mountain bike. Don't worry too much. Follow your doctors instructions. And cut yourself some slack. Don't expect to run a 5K in a month. If you can walk around the block in a month, that's awesome! I have no doubt that it is the best decision I ever made.
