    Any surgery regrets?

Yes...my regret tho is not following through and getting comfortable. Had my VSG in July 2016, lost 80 lbs that first year then started eating and pushing the limits. Hence I gained back 50 of the 80 lost. I just had revision from VSG to RNY last week and I was told I wouldn't lose much that don't expect the same results with revision. Im not screwing up this third and final chance. I will be the exception and lose the 50+ I gained back.

    Any surgery regrets?

NONE. ZERO. NADA. NIX. Best think I have ever done!!!! And why the bypass and not the sleeve? I lost 83 lbs on the sleeve (took one year) and it's been fantastic on so many levels. In fact, I am 67 years old (10 years out) and take no medication (I was on cholesterol and blood pressure meds) and I feel great. I wrote a book called Queen of Crop about my first year (one chapter for each week). It was a grand adventure. I am now in the process of writing Queen of Crop - Ten years after. Because I have gained 15 lbs of the 83 I lost. But seriously, I felt so FREE from food and diets for so many years. It's a personal decision of course but I will tell you, for me, best decision of my life!!!!

    Dumping Side Effects

I am almost a year revised next week and just got sick yesterday morning from eating breakfast, for me it doesnt matter what I eat if I take a bite too much I get sick and it varies from day to day. I also get sick if I eat the wrong things and believe me if you are a dumper it is awful and painful, at least this has been my experience with RNY. Everyone is different and you may not even be a dumper or have to worry. Good luck

    June Surgeries

Hello June surgery buddies! My gastric bypass is scheduled for June 18. I have my pre-op appointment for labs and to meet with the dietitian and psychologist on June 2 and I start the liquid diet on June 11. My surgeon has patients do a full liquid diet - just Clear Liquids and four Protein Shakes a day, so I’m a little worried about that but I figure I can do anything for one week. I’m so excited (and more than a little nervous!) now that I have dates for everything - it just makes it seem so real. Looking forward to sharing this journey with all of you!

    Grief/Alcohol

So sorry for your loss. Be careful with alcohol. I was revised almost a year ago and I rarely drank but it has developed into something else. It is not the same as before. The bypass has changed the way alcohol effects me and its more or less instant relaxation/gratification? I really cant explain it but I can tell you its no good. I do realize that some bypassers will still have no issues but I am not one of those. I start therapy soon. I had to reach out before something terrible happens. Good luck to you

    Negative reactions to getting plastics.

I am 58 and about to go for my last surgery. I am 9 years out of my lap band surgery and on my best day I am down almost 70 lbs. I’ve had it all done, breast lift with aug, tummy tuck, and a revision, lower body lift, and many rounds of Lipo. I started with plastic work around 2 years after surgery. I say wait a little while and get close to your goal weight. This is a personal decision. Do not listen to others that have not had the experience. No one else sees or feels the way you do when you look in the mirror. You lose weight and see all the imperfections and want to correct them. Nothing wrong with that. The pain is tolerable and well worth the result. Interview many Doctors and do your research. Find one that you are comfortable with and drag your hubs there to listen and see. He will change his mind. My parents weren’t on board but could see how much happier I was with myself. In the long run, we are all pleased. Good luck.

    February 2021 bypassers?

Good Morning fellow Feb bypassers I hope everyone is doing good. I have to say i am really happy with my results so far. The weight loss has been great (78lbs), As the time goes by I notice the little things that I can do now that I struggled with before. I cut the grass yesterday, before I would be winded and have to take some breaks and sweat my ass off, Yesterday was great, no breaks, no sweating and I could breath. I have a Jeep, I use to have to grab something to help me get in, i don’t now. I could go on on about the little things I’ve noticed. I still have 40Lbs+ to go and am looking forward to finding out what more I can do.. Mike
  11. I am 2 months out from revision from VSG to RNY and I am happy with the results so far. I lost around 180lbs but I never got down to my goal weight the first time and then had some Gerd that never went away. 7 years and a baby later I gained little less than half back and still had GERD and acid reflux... So I had it done for both reasons. I am down about 33lbs since surgery

    Grief/Alcohol

I am so sorry for your loss.. In my experience not many people can stop at 1/2 a glass..so I would be careful about that..(me I'm that person😅)...Also I am about 7 weeks out from a revision surgery and have had lots of similar thoughts...they will pass if you distract yourself long enough or drink a ton of water... Try talking with friends, family or a medical professional about your thoughts. But remember your pouch is still healing and you will be grieving and healing...transfer addiction is a slippery slope and you have been through a lot and need to take care of yourself.

    Considering revision

I agree with what others have said. Going from VSG to RNY is definitely different in the restriction and feelings of fullness. I am almost 2 months out and when I am full I get pressure in my chest but no where else...so different from my sleeve. Now that I am able to start moving to solids...i am finding that liquids are much easier (than with VSG) to drink as well. I am grateful that I have had no nausea, gerd or acid reflux with this revision. I also had gained about half of my weight over 7 yrs but I am losing again which is nice. You can lose weight with revision, my surgeon told me from the beginning that I would lose since it was a different surgery...just don't fall back into old habits with your second chance! I know it will slow down but I am down 33lbs since surgery.

    gaining weight?

Hello there, my sister had gastric bypass surgery about 3 years ago. She lost beautiful weight in the first year. She started gaining weight the next year. She continued to gain weight even though she went to dietitian control and tried various diets. She was already eating less, they tried even smaller portions with the dietician, she gained weight again. She can hardly eat anything now but still continues to gain weight. how is this problem solved? Has anyone had such a problem before, if it happened, and if ze was able to solve it, how could ze solve it?
  15. I had the sleeve in 2012. SW 268. I’m 5’2. I got down to 180lbs an kept it there until 2016 when I had a miscarriage, then struggled with infertility. In 2020 I welcomed a baby boy during the pandemic and well all that combined I’ve gained all my weight back 😞 I feel like a failure. My insurance covers revisions but I don’t know the specifics that are required. In 2019 I had my gallbladder removed and I was diagnosed with NASH at that time. Is NASH considered a comorbidity? Or medical complication? I haven’t been diagnosed with GERD but I know I have it (I choke in acid every night), so I am hopeful I can get an official diagnosis for a revision. I’ve tried going back to the basics and restricting calories and all the things but the weight just piled on. Anyone in the same boat?

    Considering revision

I’ve had VSG to RNY revision because a hiatal hernia caused me to develop hiccups from the GERD. Compared to VSG it was much easier to drink liquids after RNY. The lack of pyloric valve was great in that regard. I do have more restriction with foods than I did with sleeve. I’m 9months out from my revision and just now able to eat chicken. It’s different for everyone but definitely listen to your body and any cues that you might be getting full, even after just a few bites.

I had a revision from sleeve to a bypass and a hiatal hernia repair at the same time and so "yes" they repair hernia's at the same time. In fact I had the initial hernia repair while having the sleeve which failed and had to be repaired during the bypass - doing great after bypass. I lost more weight after the bypass as the body doesn't absorb as much and it is definitely a different "feel" than the sleeve was. The restriction is completely different for me. Foods again changed in flavor and things I liked after the sleeve, I no longer like after bypass. I am not one on those that throw up from overeating and am able to tolerate everything and so I have to be careful and "watch what I eat". The experience is different for everyone. If I eat too much it is more painful then it was with the sleeve and I don't know if it is because of the hernia repair that I can't throw up but it hurts extremely hard. Recovery seemed easier and maybe it's because I had been through it before? Fluids are much easier for me to drink. I too have an anxiety disorder and no the surgery does not fix that. I work with a psychologist continuously on my issues for the anxiety along with other issues I am dealing with and so yes you will need to continue therapy. Good luck in your journey. You got this!

May 12th VSG to RNY revision. Feeling good. Fingers crossed. I wish y'all good health and quick healing.
  20. Just converted from sleeve to bypass 2 days ago and already losing my mind. The first time wasn't as difficult because it was for weight loss and I was pumped, this time is for GERD relief. I HATE sweets. I could go an entire lifetime without sweets but all the protein drinks are sweet. To combat that does anyone have any suggestions of some soups they ate during phase 2? I was thinking strained chicken noodle soup, strained top ramen, or strained minestrone because regular fat free low sodium broth made me vomit. My doctor just said clear liquids but did not specify or give me ideas. Tyia
  21. So I'm browsing the bariatric cookbooks and find that many specify in their title whether the recipes are for Sleeve or Bypass patients. Just what is the difference in diet after Sleeve vs. Bypass? Does it actually matter which type of cookbook I buy? Thanks!
  22. I've been thinking a lot lately about how it's already been 10 years since I got my sleeve. I've also been thinking about new people just starting on this journey and remembering how I felt about the whole process. I should mention I'm 5ft 2in and weighed 233 lbs and was 56 years old at the time I started my journey. I tried every diet, I mean every diet. Spent too much money on fads and diet supplements. In the beginning I was excited and worried about having the sleeve. You can't grow your stomach back! Not that I had an emotional attachment to my stomach and actually thought my stomach was my enemy. The thought of removing part of a perfectly good organ in my body. Well, that's just crazy - isn't it??? I have to go to this extreme to stop killing myself?? I couldn't eat hardly anything at first. If I ate one bite too many I was in horrible pain and had to lay down. I remember thinking if I just could eat 1/2 of a small hamburger or one little taco I'd be happy. But pretty much 2 bites of anything and I was done. The weight came off fast in the beginning. But my energy was low, I didn't feel good and I had some regrets. Couldn't go out to eat it was a total waste of money. Besides since I could only eat a couple bites the waitress thought there was something wrong with the food. Naw, just wasn't that hungry I'd tell them. I get a doggy bag and attempt to eat the rest later. So yes, the first 8-10 months the weight fell off. I don't remember exactly how long it took me to loose the first time over 90 lbs. Yes, I said the first time. I didn't gain it all back though. I still was not at peace with my sleeve. It was the enemy keeping me from eating as much as I wanted and when I wanted. BTW I still can't eat salad anymore it's just too hard on my stomach. I loved salad but NO sleeve doesn't like it!! So here's the deal...no I couldn't eat a whole hamburger BUT I can eat maybe 1/2 now and then 2 hours later I eat the rest. Same with everything else. HAHA sleeve I win. I really struggled with my love/hate relationship with my sleeve. A couple years go by and I gain back around 50 lbs. HAHA sleeve I win???? Did I already say that learning to live with the sleeve was a real struggle for me? So, it took me along time to be at peace with my sleeve. Well, I am now. It wasn't easy but I did it and it feels good today not to stress out over not being able to eat as much as I want and I stop when my friend the sleeve says "that's enough!" Okay, you win sleeve. I've lost the weight that I had gained back. No, I'm not skinny but I'm at a comfortable weight that looks good on me. The real win is my health. My blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol are good/normal! My sleep apnea is gone! I don't shop in the "big ladies" department and I fit in an airline seat and can put the tray table down! I can walk for miles and I don't break out in a sweat just walking to the mail box. I can play with my Grandkids! If I were to give advise to anyone considering having VSG. Don't expect the sleeve to be the magic bullet. You have to work with it and listen to your sleeve. You might have to go through what I did. I hope if you do eventually you'll start listening. Most, not all of us have a food addiction and most of us don't want to stop eating when we are really full. Food tastes good, we love it. It's social and everything we do socially has food involved. Television ads for fast food, and restaurants at every commercial break! I was so addicted to food. Well, actually. I still am. But.. most of the time now I stop eating when my sleeve tells me to stop. I have a family member who had gastric bypass. She is so frustrated. " Ya can't eat a meal!" " Nope, we can't but we can share a meal and still have leftovers." I believe long term success (not that I'm saying I have that either) will happen when you accept, make peace and listen to your sleeve. It could just save your life like I believe mine has done for me. Good luck to everyone on this journey or getting ready to start it. It was the best decision I've made for my health. No regrets!

    Bowel Resection

Hello, I had a bowel resection myself. I went in to my consult certain I wanted the bypass and after the consult the surgeon helped me decide that for my situation the sleeve was a better fit. My surgeon said the resection did not take the bypass off the table for me BUT due to the number of issues I have had in the past with diverticulitis and other abdominal surgeries he thought that it was best no leave them alone and do the sleeve. I couldn't be happier with the results!! Your surgeon will look at the portion of bowel that was removed and the reasons it was removed, those are the two big factors

    Pre-op. Clear liquid diet cheated!!!

I assume the clear liquid diet to help your stomach and bypass heal without overloading them. Perhaps have a chat to your dietician or your surgeon see if they think you have recovered enough to progress to the next food stage early.
  25. Revisionist

    Considering revision

I don't have issues with GERD. My surgeon is pretty respected and has been doing this for a while. Patients travel from out of state to see him. Even patients who are too large to walk and need medical transport see him. I'm interested in the differences of living with say a bypass vs sleeve? Maybe that's best to look over the bypass forum. If I need to have the hernia surgically repaired, I think I would want to have a revision done as well and hopefully do it in one surgery. I think I got the hernia because I gained so much weight.
