Sleeve Or Bypass - Which Would You Choose?
needachange replied to diverdiva's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No doubt I would do the sleeve. My mom had the bypass years ago and her recovery wa horrible. I had my sleeve Nov 18 and I am down from 247 to 189. My recovery was quick and easy and my food list was an easier options than hers. He ha gained some of her weight back and she always had that dumping sensation. She stayed miserable for a while. -

Should I tell my co-workers?
pennreporter replied to roseyandmusic's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My office manager and company owner know. Office manager is a living plastic surgery advertisement :rolleyes2: and has relatives that have done bypass. So no judgements there and a videographer that his mother has had bypass. All my close personal friends know but even with some of them, I've not really gone into many more details because of few of them have given me the "I've got a relative/friend that lost theirs with just hard work and dieting." So I knew where that judgment was going. My daughter had hers 14 months ago and she's my biggest supporter and personally family is all that matters to me and they're all supportive as they have their list of medical issues and understand you have to do what you have to do. So I will probably follow the "don't ask-don't tell" policy of the military...lol Good luck all trisha -

I can't speak to the bypass, and have only had the sleeve for 2 weeks, and I love it. What ever you decide will be a good decision. My band hadn't been filled for a while either, kept having port problems. I got to 256 pounds with the band, the latest loss is the preop and post sleeve. I feel great! Best of luck to you, and keep in touch! -

Hello... I have been trying to figure out, if both the lap band & sleeve are restrictive, Why do statistics show such a higher success rate with the sleeve? Neither cause mal-absorption. I have about a month to decide between bypass & the sleeve. I'm pretty sure I want the sleeve, I just hope it is enough considering their is no mal-absorption. -
Hello all, My name is Marc. I live in South Florida. I'm in the process of getting all of my approvals, and hope to have gastric sleeve surgery mid August. I am both VERY NERVOUS and very excited to start a new chapter. I am 55 years old. Current weight (same as my high weight..) 271 Lbs. My goal weight is 185 Lbs. I have heart disease, diabetes, and sleep apnea. I had a SIX graft heart bypass at 41. I feel good, all things considered, other than painful knees, feet, and medication controlled depression--all weight related, I'm sure. My wife of 31 years is supportive of my decision after doing a lot of research on the subject. My adult children and my brother don't like the idea of me getting "85% of your stomach cut out", even after reading up on the issue. My "pros" list is many, many times longer than my "cons" list, yet I am still a nervous wreck about undertaking such a permanent step. food is my best friend and also my enemy. Decisions, decisions!!!

I have trouble with insomnia also. I did some research on the web and it seems like it is a problem with gastric bypass patients, but nobody is sure why. I take Restoril when I get absolutely to the point where I just have to sleep because I am so exhausted. Trouble is that no mater what you take, be it Ambien, Lunesta, or the Restoril if you take it every single night it will soon stop working. I am hoping that some day they come out with something better! Try using magnesium supplements at night. That can help. There is a powdered citrus flavored magnesium supplement called "Calm" that you can get at health food stores. You mix it with Water and drink it in the evening. The powder does fizz when mixed with water, like an Alka-Seltzer tablet, but don't worry. I checked with my nutritionist and she says this isn't the same as drinking carbonated beverages.

Hi everyone, I've been a frequent lurker, but I have not interacted on the boards. I now find myself in a position that I'm unsure about and could use some feedback. I was banded in 2008. I haven't had any problems until semi recently. Two weeks ago all of the fluid was taken out of my band because I started having bad heartburn while I was sick with a summer cold. Oddly enough, this was just a little over a week after seeing my Lap Band doc and being advised to consider revision to either sleeve or gastric bypass due to not really seeing much in results. My surgery weight was 258. My lowest weight was 221. Current weight is 247. Anyway, since having all of the fluid removed, my body is all kinds of messed up. I can actually eat LESS than I could with the band. I eat, I get heartburn. I get too hungry, I get heartburn. I eat solid foods too close to bedtime, I get heartburn. I'm also experiencing lots of gas and some bloating almost every time I eat something, Yesterday, it happened with water. Now, I'm on Prilosec per my doctor. I have an EGD scheduled for Thursday of next week as well as a barium swallow the day after. They've already done an x-ray and they say that my band is in the correct position. So, I'll have some answers soon, but I want to know if anyone has any kind of experiences that might give some clue as to what's happening. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

BE HONEST SLEEVERS, did anyone think okay they are going to cut half of my stomach off and the weight will just fall off?
Jb1176 replied to tamelntre's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sleeved in April of this year so I am five weeks out. I was told specifically the advantages and disadvantages of both bypass and sleeve. I was not a candidate for the bypass so the sleeve was my only choice. I was told the responsibility was on me to make this journey a success. I was also told ahead of time to expect a 1-2 lb weight loss per week on average. Having averaged 3 lbs a week in five weeks to me is acceptable. I don't expect to reach my goal until April of 2016. I'm happy with the surgery and comfortable with my progress. I feel in control for the first time in years regarding food. -

Yup. Totally. Boy, was I in for a surprise. My husband had RNY almost 9 years ago. Back then, they didn't really give them many "rules" to follow. Or they did, and he just didn't follow them. Although he got more active, he never exercised formally, ate whatever he wanted (yes, that includes sweets and carbs..he didn't really dump ever) and in almost a year, had lost 130lbs. He went from 300 pounds the day of surgery to 170 lbs in less than a year. He has maintained most of it aside from an initial 20lb gain (he looked healthier after that) and then another 30lb gain after quitting smoking. He has since lost the 30, but has learned now that it's a slippery slope, and he cannot eat whatever he wants anymore without gaining. His pouch has stretched considerably. Fast forward 8 years. I decided to have WLS. But I had also decided to have the sleeve, not the bypass. I really thought I would be able to do the same things and lose the weight. Thanks to my NUT and this site, I learned that was absolutely false. And on top of it, Karma kicked me in the ass with slower than average weight loss. I work my butt off. I adhere to my plan 98% of the time, and I have turned into a gym rat. Has it been frustrating at times? HELL YES. But I am happy I've learned to love exercise and have learned so much more about proper nutrition. If it had just fallen off of me with little effort like it had my husband, I would have never cemented the habits I have today. I feel I at least I have a fighting chance of maintenance when I finally hit my goal. And hubby has learned good habits from me -

Hi Willow Blimey, 8.7kg is brilliant. I'm so very pleased for you, and also pleased that the dietician is too. Way to go...... Mince and minced turkey sounds lovely after soups, and yeah, I can understand her warning, see how it goes, monitor it closely. After my daughters bypass her taste buds changed, before surgery she loved coffee and savoury stuff, but since she can't abide Hot drinks. But she also has no hunger, or inclination to eat either. So she has to be careful, and set her alarm on her phone to remind her to eat. Although you would think being a mum she has routines, she has always put the children and her husband first, and after she saw to everyone else, she would just grab something to eat, therefore not having a proper meal, or meal times. So the long and short of it is she now, because of her alarms, eats better, and then feels better. But, her friend who has had bypass surgery too is replacing the food addiction with alcohol..... My daughter is so worried about her. Started back at Water workout class yesterday, bit achy today, but booked again for next week. When this chest infection has cleared completely I'll be back to two classes a week. Must say I do enjoy it. Cutting down on the naughty stuff also, getting ready for healthy eating again. Now the weather is getting so nice I might too start walking again. Keep up the good work Willow, your such an inspiration -

@@MelissaKSea, Hi! Today is my first day to join this website and forum and you and I are in the same situation! My band was put in 2009 and today after a scope to see if everything is ok in my stomach they tell me as a precaution I should remove my band which has been drained! I now get hungry, my stomach growls for the first time in years and I'm scared in gaining weight back! I'm still 242 lbs today. I don't know what to do? The band was over my bypass in 2002. Once the band is gone I have no other options. Any suggestions? Very depressed! Was down to 178! -

Thank you EVERYONE for weighing in on this today. I felt like I was going to bang my head against the wall soon. I have GREAT news, I really lucked out today. When we were waiting to check hubby out of the hospital, Kim came in - she is the head of the whole bariatric program at the hospital and works closely with my surgeon. She said that the sleeve program here is pretty underdeveloped because they've done so few... and they group us in with the bypass patients as far as the nutrition guidelines and classes... and that 1 ounce is far too little. She said I can eat UP TO 4oz in one sitting, every 2-3 hours. I don't know if it will take 4oz to fill me up or not but I will play around with it and see. She also said I could go ahead and advance to the next phase of eating - full soft food diet!! I said what do I do since the nutrition class for it is not until next week - she sat down and wrote out a list for me of what I could eat! She also said there was a cookbook written by one of my surgeon's patients that included recipes for all the eating phases, and I could go get it in his office which I did. I am home now (and hubby is too - resting comfortably) and I am going to go have some cottage cheese b/c it's time to eat but then I'm going to look through the cookbook and probably make up some stuff that I can try to eat later. I will let you all know how it goes. I think a lot of the problem here comes from the fact that a bypass patient starts with a 1 ounce stomach and mine is 3-4oz, and they just group us all together. I am so glad Kim came around and shared all this info with me. Also - she said even though generally they don't worry bout you drinking after meals until 6 weeks/solid food, that I should start now since I am having problems with hunger (which I was doing already after the suggestion this morning) so I am going to continue with that. If none of this works I will try the Prilosec too. Just don't want another pill to take if i don't have to :sad0: But I think that is a great suggestion Tiffy and thank you for the info. Also Kim said I could start solid food at 4 weeks if I want to, instead of 6 weeks... but, I will wait and see how this phase goes and if I am not dealing with the hunger as badly I will still wait until 6 weeks. Thank you everyone! -
I was a band to sleeve revision on 5/23. I am one ounce away from having lost 30 pounds. To some, this may seem slow, but according to several different scales I've seen, based on my SW of 225, it is quite good. I am now 196. The BMI charts say I have another 63 lbs to lose, but I may be happy somewhere around 145. We'll see... I've got a ways to go but taking it one day at a time.

I'm a band to sleeve revision patient, and during the post-op diet, you do have to chew food very well especially when you first get to solids. Now that I am 7 months out, I can eat anything and do not have to chew things to a mush consistency. I eat steak (medium well), ribs, brisket, chicken breast (cooked anyway except I'm not a fan of fried chicken), venison. Really, the only meat that doesn't work for me is pork. We (my family) cut 95% of pork out of our diet months ago. I did try some pork chops once, and they just didn't work. We don't eat sausage or bacon. We did have a ham for Christmas and I was able to eat it. I still have the habit of eating really moist, or wet meat. I picked that up with my band. I used to have to drown all meats in some sort of condiment. I swear I should of bought stock in Heinz Ketchup and A1 steak sauce because I never ate meat without one of them for 7 months. Now, I don't have to use much, but I still like to have something on the meat I eat. It's a habit now, and I think I like the way it all tastes. I haven't had anything get "stuck" in months. Just to let you know, the "stuck" feeling with the band is completely different than the "stuck" feeling I got with the band. When something did get stuck, it hurt for a second then it would just kind of creep back up the esophagus and come out. I did get a bit of overproduction of saliva, but nothing like the band. The bite would come up, and then it was over. No gagging, no wretching at least that has been my experience. I still take small bites, and eat slow. But, it's what works best for me. The slower I eat the more satisfied I feel. Plus, I can get in a bit more food.

Band to Sleeve Revision in Mexico
LilMissDiva Irene replied to kekerene's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Keke, welcome to VST!! Dr. Aceves did my revision in Sept of 2010. He is excellent, professional, his hospital and staff are top notch and very attentive, and his technique is absolutely amazing!!! I've had nothing but success with my sleeve where I had none with my band. I was very nervous and even skeptical going in, but I didn't have a choice. I needed to do something. My first choice was Dr. Cirangle w/ LapSF. Unfortunately I couldn't gather enough funds to use his services and my insurance was not helpful with my revision what so ever. So, I chose the next best option in my area. Just so happened he is in Mexicali!! I was going to go to a very reputable Dr. for what I could afford. I don't regret my decision AT ALL! Good luck to you in your decision. -

The bypass and DS are far more invasive than I am willing to even consider. The whole rerouting of intestines and malabsorbtion thing and not things I believe I will ever except.I want a somewhat normal life after surgery. I don't want to be obsessed with food. Whats the point really? from one extreme to the other. I want to be healthy, not so much skinny. Skinny is over rated lol. -

So very excited, yet concerned that I won't be strong enough to handle the temptations and concerns. I've known a few people who had the bypass or the sleeve who didn't follow the "rules" and while they did lose weight, they are not healthy or trying to control their portions or content. I guess they took the easy road. I know that I need to do this right. I've waited too long to not give this my all. Does anyone have any input on how to face these temptations head on? Thanks! -
Hi I have been reading through some of these to see if anyone has any of the same issues as me. This is the first time I'm writing anything. I had gastric bypass surgery on 12/2/21. I have had a lot of downs and some ups. I haven't seen anywhere if someone had the same complications as I had. They said that they scratch my liver but there was no bleeding so it was fine. But what actually happened was they punctured it in two places and my abdomen filled with bile and collapsed part of my lung so much pain. Then the bile came through one of the incisions. So gross. Had to go back in to surgery to see what happened that's when they found the punctures and put in a drainage tube also gross but made the pain less. I was down about a month and a half. Went through going through the motions of throwing up with nothing coming up for a month or so. Gas pains for about 2 months now I'm just super burpy which at times can be super embarrassing at times. I'm 5'6" started my journey at 290 and was 286 just before surgery and now I'm at 205 so I'm down 85 lb total and 81 since surgery December so I'm happy about that went from a size 19/20 pants and 3x shirt to a 10 in pants and medium shirt. So I know I'm doing good but there are days I look in the mirror and just can't see the weight loss. Does anyone else have this issue? I also can't stand chicken it makes me physically sick even the smell makes nauseated. Pork chops are also gross. And the crystal light I always liked can't stand. Also the only water I can drink without getting sick is smart water. So has anyone else had any of these things? Did anyone have their liver punctured? I know I asked a lot of questions but if anyone has any info on any or all would love to hear.
