How did you know?
Sharpie replied to Soon2beslimSamantha's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I chose to have lapband surgery . I had diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I did not want to have a radical surgery such as bypass or sleeve at this point in my life. I have been extremely happy with my band and have had no complications or issues. I have been banded 2 1/2 years and I no longer have any health problems. In fact my Primary Physician told me yesterday at my checkup that he couldn't be happier with my labs. Everyone who has weight problems has to make their decision in their own time. I knew at 5'0 and 200 lbs I was on my way to be disabled. Best of Luck to you and I will pray for success. -
How did you know?
Hipigrl replied to Soon2beslimSamantha's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have been "heavy" my entire life, but I started getting morbidly obese about 15 yeas ago after a back injury. I had two back surgeries, first one 8/2007, second one in 11/2009. I also broke my left ankle (for the 5th time) in 10/2010. After a major foot surgery in 3/2011, I decided to go for the sleeve. About a month out from surgery, I got pregnant and abandoned my WLS plans for the time being. I had the baby (best thing ever!!) and got back on track for surgery in October of 2013. I then caught the NORO virus from my kid and spend two days sitting on the toilet and vomiting into the waste basket. That freaked me out so much that I backed off from the surgery. My back and foot pain was getting worse (one of the five screws in my foot/ankle had broken and wow, the pain has been intense!) and all the doctors were telling me it would never get better until I lost about 100 lbs. at least. At the time, I was about 330. The doctor for my foot told me that he would have to take out all the pins, put in thicker ones, and reinforce the area with steal plates. This did not sound like it was going to help get me out of pain. So, back to the bariatric surgeon. I started with this again in February of 2015. My doc put me on a diet pill to help with appetite suppression, and I lost almost 50 lbs. from March 2015 - June 2015. It took a while to get all of the insurance requirements met, but it was finally approved, and my surgery was on July1. I am 23 days out of surgery, just started my 4th week post-op, and while it has not been easy, I would not go back. I had the sleeve because I did not want to have as many issues with malnutrition as I have heard can happen with bypass. I know that I will eventually get to eat real food again, just not nearly as much, and I am so happy with the weight loss. The biggest issue I am having is getting my Protein. I am a vegetarian and the idea of drinking milk repulses me. I am not a vegan, will eat cheese and yogurt, it is just milk that grosses me out. Soy milk was not something I wanted to try, but I find the light vanilla and light chocolate is palatable. I am still experimenting with different protein supplements, but I feel confident I will eventually find one that I can get down. I have found a few suggestion on this forum that give me hope. :-) I hope this info has helped. Good luck! -
How did you know?

overgrown scar tissue that blocks the entrance to the small intestine. They happen in about 5% of gastric bypass patients - usually within the first couple of months after surgery (while you're healing). It's an easy fix - they do an upper endoscopy and use this balloon thing to dilate it. Night and day difference - I felt better immediately! main symptom is you have a hard time keeping things down - but I also had some acid reflux with it. Both symptoms were completely gone after they "fixed" the stricture. -
Not another stall question!
Mommyof4boys replied to wittyusername's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my bypass Nov 7th and I have hit a stall. It's so depressing because I'm doing all the same things I did at the beginning and nothing is happening I have heard this happens to everyone but I truly hope it passes soon! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
My day is tomorrow! Band to bypass

Did You Insurance Pay For Band To Sleeve Revision?
iwannabslim replied to Gigi_Girl's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My insurance pays for revision surgery, but I am still waiting on word from them... It seems like they are willing (if I meet their unknown requirements) to pay 100% after deductible. Sadly for me, the requirements are apparently obscure, unlike the original requirements of 5 year history, 40 BMI (or 30 BMI with comorbidity), and 6 month supervised diet... -
Did You Insurance Pay For Band To Sleeve Revision?
1maryreigel replied to Gigi_Girl's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my lapband in 2008. My band has a leak. They sent the paperwork to my insurance ( Optima ) and they gave their approval within 2 weeks for me to have the band to sleeve revision. They pay for all of it. My surgery is May 3 -
yes - I know. But she asked the following question near the end of her post - so I was responding to it: "just out of curiosity has anyone had a bypass and went to sleeve?"

25 years old? Think about how much longer you will get to enjoy being normal sized if you go through with the surgery. As Catwoman said, it might suck for a while until you figure out what works for you and what doesn't, but that takes at most a couple of months, then you have the rest of your life to look forward to. As for dumping, my nutritionist said it only happens to 2 types of people: those who go overboard and eat too much/too quickly, and those who have heard about it and do it on purpose to feel how bad it is. She said in both groups it typically only happens 1 time. I think all of the bad side effects are pretty short term (nausea and such) are usually surgery related, so they pass pretty quickly (a week or two). While you are in that two week window, it feels like forever, but it will pass. That isn't to say there isn't real risk. I had a friend who had a ton of trouble keeping any food down, her esophagus was too small from scar tissue. She had multiple surgeries to fix and nothing worked, but eventually went to a different doctor to revert to a bypass and has been doing great since then. So even some of the worst side effects can be eventually mitigated. Positives? I am only 3 weeks out from my surgery and I have already had 4 non-scale victories (down 35 pounds): Walking down the stairs no longer hurts my knees No longer snoring Dropped 1 clothes size My wife's care no longer squeaks when I ride in it (from the side of the chair rubbing against the center console) And finally, I have been having over 100oz of water since my 2nd week. I can drink pretty freely now without noticing anything. I don't think I could chug a glass of water, but I rarely did that anyways.

Duodenal without redoing the sleeve?
Starr2015 replied to BrooklynMomma's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi! I had the sleeve at NYU with Dr. Shweck in Aug 2018. I got my gallbladder removed May 2019. As I did regain 80 lbs, I consulted again (as recommended by my vascular doctor). I went to NYU Brooklyn and spoke to Dr. Cheema and he recommended the SADI over Gastric Bypass because I am a smoker and there can be a high rate of ulcers. I am scheduled for 07/26/23 and I am very high risk so being admitted day before. Dr. Cheema and the endoscopy both showed my sleeve was perfect still and there was absolutely no need to redo it. The restriction is still there, just now we are adding the malabsorption which is typically stage 2 anyways. As per Dr. Cheema, the SADI is a safer and newer version of the DS with slightly less intestine bypassed and it connects the sleeve directly. With the DS, there are 2 cuts for connections created to bypass. With the sleeve done already, it is much less of a risk and still goes straight to malabsorption. You will need high A D E K vitamins plus iron and calcium and B12. You will experience different symptoms then just the sleeve such as increased dumping likely for sugar and fat. You will still be restricted to eat small meals and you will still need a ton of protein. Until I get mine, that is the best I can tell you. Look up different articles on DS and SADI and ask your doctor specifically which procedure is being done and what are the cons. Good luck! -
So I went in yesterday and got another .5 cc's taken out. I feel better, but have a strong feeling it's going to come back again. My Dr said he see's this regergitation/GERD in 20-30% of his patients. Wow. That is alot. He said that when it gets really bad, patients either just get the band removed or changed to Gastric Bypass. This is totally freaking me out. It seems like there is a strong chance that I will have to loose my band! I don't think I would want to revise to anthing permanent like bypass. It sounds like some people just get a new band placed....but isn't this issue just going to happen again? My Dr wants me to see how it goes and if it starts happening again to come back and he'll do the barium swallow. I don't know what I am going to do....

you all are not the only one to have a problem!! my band was removed and i had gastric bypass on Nov 27....had reflux and got pnuemomia several times...cannot begin to tell you how much better i feel!! do whatever it takes to correct the problem--the influx of your food into the lungs caused pnuemonia that is neither bacterial or viral and hard to treat--causes much distress!!!! I am on the mend--and while I have not lost any weight I am feeling 100 percent better--guess my body did not like a foreign object--for it also caused MUCH scar tissue that had to be removed!! I am only 30 lbs from goal and feeling happy with my 133# loss so far....I know that I will make it!! ...and happy even if I never lose another pound!! wishing you all an easy journey,a good year and above all health and happiness!!

Hello my name is William and I had RNY Gastric Bypass on April 5, 2012. Starting weight: 382 lbs, Goal Weight: 230 lbs, Lowest Weight: 196 lbs and my Current Weight: 200 lbs. I went from a size 56 waist to a 34 waist. I also had a lot of medical issues like diabetes and high blood pressure, but since surgery all of them are gone and I’m on no medications. I’m the happiest I have ever been in my life and I’m positive that my weight loss surgery saved my life.

You had your surgery on the 7th? So not quite a week ago which is very early days. This is major surgery, so it can take a while for the pain to ease and we all heal at our own rate. I felt like I'd been hit by a bus for a good two weeks. Can't say if it would have been the same if I'd had a sleeve, but the Mini Gastric Bypass/ Omega Loop is a shorter operation than the RNY but still took me a while to recover.

Dr Garcia's Patients

Its for revision patients only so he can check out the band and see what he has to deal with during surgery. We will not have to have anything extra like that done. -
When did you decide it was time for a revision?
JohnnyMadison replied to ryan_86's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It's true that GBP (revision) patients maintain at least a 10% or more weight loss than sleeve, so theoretically revision is just giving yourself a better chance. I revised for acid reflux and "only" had regained ~ 25# of 130# lost and was still < 30 BMI at revision. But I will say that losing the 17# I have lost since 12/16, which is a higher rate as a % and # as compared to sleeve, has made me much happier. With that said, I'm only 3 weeks out so I'm actually scared I will lose more than I want and look like an old man again with that drawn face. And then I'm scared that I'm going to regain as well. I guess I'll never be happy. Listen, our stomachs/bodies often betray us and make us hungrier than we need to be. And the food supply is stacked against healthy eating. So if you can get a revision to keep more weight off then I would do it whenever you are ready. It's a tough, tough, battle out there. If you have acid reflux, however, I wouldn't hesitate to revise sooner than later. I developed Barrett's Esophagus which is miserable to get at 44 and I'm hoping will go away with some healing. -
I had purchased patch vitamins and EZ melt vitamins to meet vitamin requirements. Purchased Propel water at Sam's club, 15g protein, 0 cal, 0 sugar to meet liquid intake to prevent constipation. Purchased from Bariatric pal soups, chocolate drinks, shakes replacements to be sure all protein was met. After surgery on the 28th of August 2020, no pain, some discomfort. Went home the next day after x-ray showing no leakage at Mayo Hospital in Florida. I did walk in place in the hospital to help release excess gas. I did purchase a abdominal binder on Amazon and used it after the surgery. This helped a great deal and Dr said this was a good idea to do this. My goal is BMI 20 or less. Enjoy your healthy journey. Dr. Stephen Bowers did over 1000 gastric bypass surgeries and he was awesome.

This is the beginning of a new me....
Martene81 replied to Mindy M's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congratulations on your new beginning!! I start my liquid diet today too...well I started 2 days ago to give it a test run and so glad I did. What has helped me is planning what I will "drink" each day and I put an alarm on my phone to go off and tell me exactly what to drink and when. In between time I try and stay busy to keep my mind off food. I pray a lot and keep my goals and some inspirational scriptures on hand to keep me encouraged. I'm having bypass on May 27th and am very excited about my new beginning as well ???? -
Sleeve vs Bypass
Butterflywarrior replied to tasha_kelo's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was going to do rny but bc if complex medical issues..chronic pain treated with narcotics and sometimes steroids, psych meds, and so on, my surgeon felt sleeve was better bc I could still properly metabolize meds but rny often messed that up. My psychiatrist even backed that when he told me he has a really hard time adjusting meds in his bypass patients. So consider your health history and potential for future health issues as much as one can predict...lol Sleeve can bring about lots of weight loss too but you have to likely work a bit harder for it then with rny so they both have pros and cons. Rny been around the longest so there is much more data available but sleeve is showing lots of longitudinal positivity!! Good fortune -
I got the lap band in 2009, and was successful in that I lost 129 lbs with it within the 18 mo. time frame and kept the majority of it off for many years. In April of this year, I felt I better go in and get a check-up to make sure everything is in order because I felt like I was hungry more often. The new doctor felt it was time for me to do a sleeve revision, told me that I have a dilated pouch. I had that once before years ago, and had to go 3 months with only half my Fluid to let my esophagus "rest". I dreaded to be unfilled again because I always gained some weight back, and I had to work twice as hard to get it off again. I couldn't talk them into not unfilling me hehe, so I said I'll go for the revision. I had my revision on Sept. 2, 2016, and am thrilled at the way I feel. No slimming, no painful pressure in the center of my chest... All those things one gets used to having the band all those years. I love it, and although I'm hungry during the liquid phase, it's not that bad at all. Lost 11 lbs in the last couple of weeks but I am prepared for the slower pace. As long as I'm losing, I'm happy with that. Good luck all, and hope you are as happy (or will be as happy) as I am with my new sleeve.

I'm right there with you. I went to my first support group meeting yesterday. A gentlemen that had gastric bypass a few years ago was one of the speakers. He looked amazing, He started out at 500lbs and is now 210lbs. so I was like dang, he looks really good! and i was inspired at first... what scared me the most was hearing his experience. He didn't fully listen to the physician and take his vitamins, and neglected to take his calcium. well he said ALL of his teeth fell out. I was sitting there like damn!!... I never heard of that happening before, and it was all due not having calcium!... and he said he mainly suffered from dehydration because you literally have to sip, or it really hurts and it came back up for him... unfortunately i haven't gotten to meet anyone who had been sleeved. I too am having doubts.... part of me want to do it for the same reason you mentioned... its scary... because there is no way of knowing what will happen the day of or after... part of I think just needs to stop thinking... I think in the end it will be worth it as long as we listen to the physicians and follow what they say to a T..

Happy 1 Year Sleeversary To Me!
JaspersGirl replied to JaspersGirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
thank you all!!!!!! you all have motivated me again I use to be a size 22 and now a 13 so I need to chill lol. I need to plan my meals again and have a work out schedule and not let this depression get to me. I guess I compare myself to all 4 people that I personally know in my family and a friend who had the gastric bypass but they all weighed approx 300-400lbs and in a year they lost over 100lbs. I am different because they were bigger than I and I had the sleeve. I do not regret the sleeve at all. I am happy with it! so today I will start up again.. I am rereborn!!! -
Need a band-buddy - 30yo guy, pre-op for lap band.
Karunch replied to soundlogik's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've been having issues and at times I have little to no restriction, and then sometimes I have food get stuck after just a few bites. It's a bit frustrating. My band can hold 11 cc's, and right now it has 9 cc's of saline. Even though I'm most likely revising to the VSG, I'm thankful for having had the band put in. Without it I would never have been able to lose and maintain a loss of 90+ pounds over the past 4 years. I no longer have high blood pressure and I no longer have to take any medications. I just have reached a point where I know that I'm not getting any younger and I know that I need to do something else, as I still have over 100 more pounds to lose. Thus why I'm looking into revision surgery. -
What was the deciding factor?
nursebeccarn replied to Tgarden's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am in no way a veteran, but I can tell you why I chose it: My band surgeon doesn't do band to sleeve revisions, he too advised me to have the bypass. There is a common belief ( whether it's true or not) that band to sleeve revisions are not as successful and therefore the bypass is recommended. However, my personal reason were I did not want a forces malabsorption syndrome, I had less than 100lbs to lose, and wanted to have kids without all the risks of being a high risk pregnancy. I decided the sleeve was the right choice for me and found a surgeon that supported my decision. I can tell you 110% that I am happy with my decision and felt like it was the right choice for me. You have to decide what is right for you.... Good luck to you! This is a great group! -
How long to feel pains near incisions? (I am 3 wks post op gastric bypass)
Shellie79 replied to YankeeBizChick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my bypass done almost a month ago. I was good until last week. Started having a soreness on my right side. Progressively has gotten worse. Feels like I'm ripping stitches sometimes doing same things as u mentioned. I saw my doc today and she said it's muscle pain. Gave me muscle relaxers. Hope they work cause it hurts so bad.
