Fears of Depression deteriorating post operation
Bariatric852 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone, I have been suffering with Depression for 14 years. Some days, the symptoms are less intense and those are my good days. Other days it can be much worse. I’m on psych meds to help me cope. I am post op for about three weeks now after getting a gastric bypass done and I have noticed a few dips in my mood. I am trying to figure out whether these fluctuations are due to the gastric bypass op or my usual ongoing Depression. I know that I have been experiencing a lot of changes at the moment and that could be cause of my mood plummeting. In two days time, I will be graduating from the full liquid diet to puréed food. Just want to get an idea what you are experiencing if you are a weight loss surgery patient who battles Depression. Thanks 😊 -
Pain is so relative, it is hard to know what your "really bad" pain is in relation to my own, but I think if you are worried you should call your surgeon. I didn't have bypass so I can't speak to it specifically, but I did have pain in my side that was very sore for a week after surgery. I had trapped gas in areas of my belly that increased my pain. I still have tenderness at one of my laparoscopy sites, and I'd expect you are still experiencing a lot of that given your surgery was just a few days ago. I say let yourself rest and know your body is going through some trauma that is not going to last for very long. But always, always trust your own instincts and call your surgeon if you feel your pain is out of the ordinary. Be well friend!

Hey all I had my gastric bypass on May 19th and have been home since Thursday afternoon. I have really bad pain on my right side and even struggle getting up by myself. Do you think this is gas pain or should I be worried?

Hi Everyone! I'm so happy I found this group! I've learned a great deal from the forums. I'm 8 weeks out from u RYGB gastric bypass surgery. My stomach feels awful most of the time. I'm nauseous most of the time, especially when I drink any liquid or eat. At times, when I'm drinking water it feels like someone is sticking needles in my stomach. I've not been able to tolerate any dairy yet. My doctor and his team are fantastic, but nothing has helped, herbs, ginger etc. except for Zofran and I really can't take medication forever. No food tastes good or appeals to me. I've also had to have my esophagus dilated 2 times because it becomes so tight that swallowing is difficult. Has anyone else had these issues after a RYBG? I'm really working on not getting discouraged! Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You!

Hello everyone, My name is Bariatric852. I am a 28 year old female who has just undergone laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery earlier this month. I am coming up to three weeks post op on a full liquid diet. I am craving solid food so much - I miss chewing my food. I am actually looking forward to puréed food stage starting on the 27th of May. The various weight loss surgeries were initially brought up by a specialist in a sleep clinic dealing with my sleep apnea. This was nearly three years ago. During these years leading up to my surgery, I have seen a multitude of doctors and specialists. Psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, surgeons, dietitian, physiotherapist. A lot of professionals to see. I have quite a few health problems such as Clinical Depression, PCOS, Sleep Apnea, high blood pressure and Borderline Diabetes... The doctors gave careful consideration to all of the above and gave me the green light to go ahead with the surgery this year. I was given the choice of gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. I chose the bypass. My weight, at it’s heaviest was 155kg or 341.7lbs. In preparation for the surgery I had to lose 5-10% of my body weight. I managed to do this and my weight pre op was 125.5kg or 275.6lbs. Three weeks later and my current weight is 120.6kg or 265.9lbs. My family say I look a little thinner especial around my face. I know I have a long journey ahead of me. Life-long dietary supplements and antidepressants (21 pills a day). And a lot of hard work to be put in. But I look forward to seeing my weight drop and my body and mind becoming healthier.

Cleaning up diet Pre Surgery
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to DareMightyThings's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
When I started my 6 months pre-op with the nutritionist I went all in. 1200 calories a day with 60g protein minimum. For a while during pre-op I was drinking around a gallon of water on top of other liquids as well. I lost 20lbs the first month and a total of 60lbs including the 15lbs for the 2 week liquid diet right before surgery. I found it much easier to do a complete overhaul than gradually change things because I wouldn’t have stuck with gradual changes. I wrote everything down in a journal the office gave me and tracked with the SparkPeople app as well. I still use SparkPeople to track most days and I’m 9months post VSG to RNY revision. -
I’m 9 years out from my sleeve, and did pretty well for the first few years. But, I am now exactly where I started and dealing with absolute misery with a hernia and other stomach issues. My doctor wants to do a revision to a bypass. If you’ve been through the same thing, did things go better with the bypass? If you had stomach problems, did that get better? Thanks.

Awful smelling stool and gas
theshop62 replied to Pamela Raab Campbell's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I had gastric sleeve in 2015 and never had problems with sulfur type smelling foul gas / stool. Then I had a hiatal hernia in November 2020, that the surgeon repaired and at the same time revised me from a sleeve to a bypass, now I’m having very bad passing of this very foul smelling gas and stool. Dr gave me prescription Colestipol Hydrochloride granules to stop extra bile from going into the large intestine. When I took it everything went away and I was ok. He also scheduled me for a specialized SIBO test?, small intestine bacteria test, to make sure overgrowth of bad bacteria is not growing in the small intestine, hope this helps everyone on this forum. -
Revision completed
Tracyringo replied to Tracyringo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Well well well, its been 1 year ago today had had my revision to bypass !! I weighed in this morning at 154 !!! I still am on my dexilant 60mg for the GERD. I talk half in morning and half at night and it keeps me from burning. I dont see myself ever being able to get off of it at this point but that is okay because my last EDG showed esophagitis D down to an A. I had so much anxiety about doing this revision because I liked my sleeve so much and I missed the restriction I had with it. I wasnt sure how I would maintain my weight loss without it. Well I will tell you that the dumping has been no joke for me and I have to watch it. I also think my metabolism had to have changed and the malabsorption of calories did something also. I started at 180 the day I had the revision and lost 12lbs that first month. I lost 25lbs around 7 months which was 151lbs total and I started at 311. I have pretty much maintained without too much effort, which I never could have done with VSG. I ate around 800 calories just to stay under 170 !!! I would have gone with RNY to begin with had I known how much easier it would have been for me. Good luck to all of you on your journey !! -
How Much Weight Loss During Liquid Diet
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to PhenomenalWoman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did go from sleeve to RNY. It did eliminate the gerd but I still take the protonix once a day when I wake up until I talk to the surgeon at my next appointment in July. I’m 9 months out from my revision to RNY have lost about 60lbs and I’ve been maintaining at 150-155 for almost 4 months now. -
May Surgeries - check in!
Losing in in 2021 replied to ChunkyCali's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Maybe I’m expecting too much too soon. Had my bypass surgery on 5/19. Weight myself this morning, 5/22 and only lost 0.8 pounds. Is this normal? Also, has anyone’s eyes gone “batty”? It’s like I can really focus on what I’m reading. I told my nurse at discharge but she didn’t seem concerned. Any help/comments/etc. is appreciated. -
Lying about not getting surgery is awful
nbw1220 replied to GinormousReislin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I wanted to chime in here to give another perspective.. first, of course you don't have to tell anyone you had surgery...its up to you to disclose you medical history. That being said, I tell everyone who asks. The reason being- I was soooo super scared of having surgery that I put it off for years and everyone I ever talked to about losing weight said that they did it "the natural way"..IT WAS A TOTAL LIE. I had people come up to me afterwards and tell me they had it done too but never tell people. I would have loved to to speak to more people who had it done and I wish I had done it sooner. Now I tell people who ask "how I did it" the truth. I don't care how they react but maybe I'll help someone who was like me. Also I just had a revision surgery from sleeve to bypass and I plan on sharing that as well. Disclose what you would to who you like ...but remember how you felt before you had surgery & don't say it was "the natural way" if someone is looking for advice on losing their weight. -
Hey! Revision(ist), I want to hear from you! Tell me your experience: revision in June. Nervous
nikki19rl replied to nikki19rl's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Dang! Yeah. I was the same way. I had issues not even a year out from my sleeve and was also on Ragland and Prilosec for a year after my sleeve. Nothing seemed to help long term. Unfortunately, my surgeon who had been working with me since 2017 knew after nothing else worked that I needed a revision. I had maintained my weight loss so she believed me when I was seeking help for reflux and severe dumping. Plus one of my teeth broke and another one isn't far off. Once I showed her my teeth she realized something was really up. The issue was we had to prove to my Insurance that it was medically necessary and that my symptoms could be proven on a series of test to prove it wasn't elective. I had to have a HIDA scan done to test my liver and gallbladder function, which was normal. I had to have a flouro swallowing study done, which was normal except for the hernia. I had a ambulatory swallow study done that showed my esophagus wasn't emptying properly and that I had severe GERD on top of a failed gastric emptying test. The most important test was my GERD test out of all the above. If I didn't get a positive test for GERD, my insurance wouldn't cover my revision. The other test just helped build my case. I'm not sure what your surgeon will require but if your acid reflux is as bad as mine you'll need that GERD test. I also had and failed the BRAVO . so as a alternative I had to have a 24 hour ambulatory ph test thst i originally denied, where they put a tube down your nose into your stomach with a monitor you wear the entire time that monitors your swallowing and acid reflux . It's more accurate than the BRAVO, and as awful as it sounds, it wasn't fun but it's doable. I'd suggest getting that test done and eating badly and eating spicy food w wine if you have it done lol. if you are paying out of pocket it may be up to the surgeon. But if you need to prove your case with insurance you'll need that GERD test . The 1st surgeon didn't listen to me so I saw one of his partners who was a women, who listened and helped me out ALOT. You know your body. Just do not go in complaining about your weight as the main issue for revision, . Make sure that it's noted as your last concern so they'll hear you out, and how even eating properly causing you discomfort. It was a long process. Hopefully it's worth it. Just be consistent and like i mentioned , that Ph test will be the determining factor and most important test to have if all else fails.. -

I'm experiencing everything you are except rapid gastric emptying. I've been on pranprozole since Nov 2019. Gastrologist will not even discuss repairing the hernia. I've started needing Tums again. Prior to seeing this doctor I had been eating 8 - 10 Tums a day, I had no idea that was a bad thing! I had them in the console of my truck, in the house and some by the bed so I could roll over in the middle of the night and get a couple. Did your doctor suggest revision immediately or will I have to go through a series of tests, medications etc? I was cash pay for the sleeve, but it was elective surgery. This would be medically necessary I suspect. Thoughts? Advice appreciated. -
Great new job with lousy health BCBS of AL insurance policy - no bariatric surgery coverage?
SkinnyKathy posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
I had a lap band under United Healthcare PPO in 2008, lost 250 pounds, then had to have it removed in 2018 due to terrible acid reflux, Kaiser insurance. Have gained over 100 pounds back. Now I want to have RNY gastric bypass, and was set to get this going through Kaiser but got derailed due to COVID. Now I just started a great new job which I am very excited about, but the downside is that they only offer one insurance option, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. I have to start the whole insurance process all over again, in fact find new doctors again, but today I called the customer service number for BCBS of AL and asked about bariatric surgery and they told me that it is not covered on my policy! Has anyone ever had this experience, and were you able to find a way to get bariatric surgery covered under appeal? I really want this surgery but the out of pocket costs are pretty bad. I can't believe that this isn't covered in any form. Help! -

Not Yet Decided: NEED HELP
tamm2x replied to Peanut120's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had bypass on April 14. There is indeed a steep learning curve as to what foods your new stomach can handle, but that is to be expected. However, my surgeon said some people never experience dumping at all. Personally, I have been very careful about what I’m eating and so far, so good! -
Choosing between sleeve and bypass
SunnyinSC replied to lunadreams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I haven't had surgery yet, but I had the same choice to make so figured I'd share my experience. Keep in mind everyone is different and my choice is just mine. I'm not suggesting that you should make the same decision or anything. So I have had issues with heartburn and I went into my surgery consult set on Gastric Bypass because of that. However, the surgeon recommended, due to my weight, Sleeve because it's less risk of complications. At my weight, the amount of actual loss would be about the same. My nurse then stepped in on my behalf and got an endoscopy to check out my heartburn issues. This was because I am self pay, and I can't really afford to do a sleeve, only to have to get a revision later, so she wanted to see if we could find a root cause of the heartburn/GERD. Endoscopy revealed I had a medium sized Type III hiatal hernia. While the hernia could be repaired during surgery, it also meant I had a good chance of needing a revision in the future if I went with Sleeve. Not guaranteed, but still a high probability. Since I'm self-pay and I definitely don't want to find myself in a position where my heartburn/GERD have gotten worse and I can't pay for a revision, we decided it would be best for me to go with Gastric Bypass. Gastic Bypass is a mal-absorption procedure in addition to just restrictive, so I will have to be extra sure my vitamins are okay, and it is more at risk of complications during surgery/recovery due to multiple incision sites. That being said, overall risk is still really low, it's just higher when compared to sleeve. Definitely weigh out the options, talk honestly and openly with your medical team about risks and complications. Hopefully you can come to a decision that works for you Best of luck! -

Sleeved Nov 2017 then Revised July 2019 (for GERD, hernia, sleeve torsion etc) Almost immediately after no more issues with GERD. I developed a stricture early out but it was dilated and resolved. I initially lost more weight (around 15lbs) but it wasn’t where I or my surgeon wanted me to be so I gained it back. My weight may fluctuate a few lbs on either side of my goal but that is usually due to events I wasn’t hungry immediately after surgery but that’s normal for me, hunger returned and it was no big deal as I had already had a return on hunger a year before with VSG. Some people (myself included) have a experienced a change in restriction from VSG to RNY (less, more or different restriction) I actually had an easier recovery with the revision. It was a short learning curve with new bathroom habits. Overall very satisfied. -
Hello! I'm just wondering if anyone is scheduled for a revision from sleeve to bypass in June, later on or has already had it done? My revision surgery is scheduled for June 14th for GERD, rapid gastric emptying, hiatal hernia, and difficulty swallowing! I won the post op sleeve surgery lotto. I got it all! 😅🤣.. I'm a little nervous and starting to get anxious. So yeah..😬.. If you've had a revision, I want to hear from you. Tell me your story and your experience after your revision. Were your issues resolved? Did you lose any weight? Were you hungry? Tired? Whatever. Let me know your thoughts and if it was worth it... 😊😊😊

How Much Weight Loss During Liquid Diet
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to PhenomenalWoman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first go round (dec 2019) I went from 279 to 264 (15lbs). When I had my revision for gerd (aug 2020) I went from 220 to 212 (8lbs). Both were 2 weeks long. Edited to add- my plan was 3-4 protein shakes a day, all the celery and cucumbers I wanted and 1-2 cups of broth. -
Choosing between sleeve and bypass
catwoman7 replied to lunadreams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
there are statistically more complications with bypass, but complications with either surgery are really pretty low. The rule of thumb lately seems to be if you have GERD issues, go with bypass, otherwise, it comes down to personal preference. They're both good surgeries, and you'll find people on this site who've been very successful with both. you will have to take vitamins for life with both surgeries, but there are more consequences if you slack off on vitamin-taking with bypass because of the malabsorption. But if you're diligent about taking your vitamins, then vitamin deficiency is rare. about 30% of sleeve patients develop GERD (or if they have it prior to surgery, it can get worse), and about the same percentage of bypass patients (about 30%) experience dumping syndrome, and in both cases that's kind of a crap shoot. You can't really predict ahead of time if you'll get those or not (although if you already have GERD, it's very likely not to improve and there's a decent chance it'll get worse with the sleeve. On the other hand, bypass usually improves if not outright cures GERD). If you have bypass and are one of the 30% who dump, it can be controlled by not eating a lot of sugar (or fat - some people dump on fat) at one sitting. hair loss is very common with both surgeries. Actually, it's a potential side effect of any major surgery (and childbirth, too), due to stress on the body. I think we see it more after bariatric surgeries than other surgeries, though, because in addition to the trauma from the surgery, we're also taking in very few calories the first few weeks/months. The good news is, it's temporary - the hair will grow back - and in most cases, you're the only one who'll notice it. A few people don't lose any hair at all, a few lose noticeable clumps of it, but most of us are somewhere in the middle. It's more like "shedding", and it's not enough for others to notice. I didn't lose much at all. It lasted maybe three months and then started growing back. But anyway, don't make your decision based on hair loss, because that's very common regardless of surgery. I don't think you can really make a wrong decision either way. I'd take into account what your doctors say, and also consider your personal preference. Some people are more comfortable with one or the other. As I mentioned, they're both good surgeries and you can get good results with either one. -
Choosing between sleeve and bypass
lunadreams posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've been planning to have the sleeve, and have done all the pre-op requirements. If all goes well, I want to do WLS over the summer. I've been planning on the sleeve, as it's what my surgeon recommended for me, but now I'm wondering if I should go for the bypass. I'm in my late 40s (done having kids, so fertility/pregnancy is not a factor in my decision), have a BMI of just over 35, with PCOS, diabetes, hypertension, and recently diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy (we're not sure of the cause, though I've read a study showing WLS improves symptoms). When I asked my surgeon why she recommended the sleeve, she said it's because I have relatively less weight to lose, and, although it will require work and being vigilant with diet, she thinks it will be successful for me, and is less invasive and risky, though she also said she would be willing to do the bypass if it's what I want. My endocrinologist said that the bypass has additional mechanisms by which it can resolve metabolic issues, but she'd suggest asking my surgeon about her rate of complications with bypass. She also said she'd be less inclined to push bypass for me, though, because my diabetes is well-controlled on one medication (A1c is usually between 5.7 to 6.0). My cardiologist strongly advised me to go with the sleeve, because she has a number of patients who were a "hot mess," medically, after bypass. I want to resolve my cardio-metabolic issues, but the risks of bypass also really concern me. I've never been anemic, but I've been deficient in other vitamins and have experienced hair loss and other issues as a result, so I'm concerned I may be at greater risk for deficiencies and other unwanted consequences with the bypass. I'm not sure how to decide this...help? -
