  1. I can't imagine keeping it from my boyfriend. He is my rock and the person who has been with me through it all. I did end up having complications with my surgery so it is important to tell your partner.
  2. I just had my sleeve on April 10th, I didn't tell my husband until I got all my clearances bc I did not want him trying to talk me out of it. It was 2weeks prior to surgery when I told him and said, I'm just letting you know I'm having bariatric surgery on the 10th, he was surprisingly fine with it, just asked about complications and recovery time. Tell him, you won't know his reaction until you tell him.
  3. Hello everyone so I got my Surgery April 13, everything went good the Doctor said I had a big stomach. So my surgery took 4 hours I stood in the hospital for 2 days I wanted to make sure I didn't have any complications. I started taken my Triumeq the second day of my surgery but cut in 4 pieces. Today Easter Sunday I took the whole pill and it went down good, I been walking alot, drinking water from a baby cup, sipping on my protien shakes. Everything's been good so far am looking for coward for the upcoming days.
  4. Spouses usually need to know. What if there are complications? Who will take care of you and pick up your slack? Who has to deal with the hormonal outbursts? If you don't live with them, they don't need to know..... But if you do, they do.

    Surgery at 56?

I am 67 now and had my surgery in Dec @66yrs old. I was worried about my age but I had no complications. When the endocrinologist told me I didn't need to take my pre diabetes mess any longer when I left the hospital Iwas thrilled. I no longer take cholesterol mess and am down to one BP med. This is possibly the best decision I have made for ME!!!!
  6. Hello, Sleeved 4/13 - no major complications. Doctor said my liver was smooth and the opposite of fatty, no diabetes, no allergies that are known. The first evening after the surgery I noticed my face was a little flushed. The next day I went home to find a rash on one of my breasts in conjunction with the flushed face and chest. Today the rash seems to be on my stomach also. It's splotchy, slightly raised (enough to feel a difference when running your finger over it). Has anyone else experienced this?

    Sleeve leak

I will start prayers for everyone on this thread. My heart breaks for you and makes me feel lucky for the small complications I've had. [emoji738][emoji178][emoji738]
  8. Yikes, that's a super low BMI. I guess Mexico has no limits, hope yourecover from all your complications
  9. Like the others, my psychologist didn't say anything of the sort....now my surgeon/doctor did say to me that he would like me walking from 1 mile a day to 2 miles a day since that will help lessen any complications during surgery....other than that, you do your 2 week liver shrinking diet prior to surgery and you should be golden...best of luck to you!

Band to sleeve one surgery or two?

Please if you are considering doing this in 1 surgery know that serious complications can happen. I did mine in one surgery and have had horrible issues because the state my stomach was in after the band. I'm 3 weeks out and still can not tolerate anything beyond clear liquids. I also had to have an NG tube to rest my stomach because of swelling. While it is possible to have this done successfully in 1 surgery it's not worth the risk.
  11. have my second pre-op appointment with my surgeon. I have read, researched, and spoken to many people that have had this surgery. I am working hard on staying positive and having realistic expectations. I have not been worried about complications at all, until today. I know these negative thoughts are normal. My strategy is to push them aside and focus on all the benefits this surgery will bring. In the past few days, arthritis in my hips has been acting up due to the weather changes. I know that carrying all this extra weight does not help. My son is graduating from High School 9 days after my surgery. My first goal is to be there for him. It did suck that the dress that I bought for the graduation would not fit. My hope is that it fits by the time of the graduation. This is exactly why I am having this surgery, to be there for my family. I am not so focused on a weight goal, more on being healthy.

  15. Info per various Exercise Science Experts/Professors: Exercise is great for so many reasons; anti-aging, help with depression, lower the risk for heart disease and cancer, reduce risk and complications of diabetes, and you can even grow new brain cells. What it can't do is cause you to lose weight. The data simply does not support the use of exercise as a primary tool for getting thin. People don't understand that it is very difficult to exercise enough to lose weight. If that's why you're doing it, you're going to fail. Why? You don't burn enough calories unless you're Michael Phelps (for example). Fact is, you only burn 300 calories a half hour, if that. As well, mounting evidence suggests that exercise makes us hungry and that we wind up eating more extra calories in response to that hunger than we burn up doing the exercise that makes us hungry in the first place. While exercise by itself is fairly useless for losing weight, it appears to be critical to keeping the weight off once you've lost it.

    Aging process and Sleeve

Those are great points Heather. With how different the post op instructions from surgeons on vitamins, for instance I was told I didn't need calcium after three months and no b12! Thank god, I did tons of research. I wouldn't be surprised if forums 10 or 15 years have posts from lots of people complaining of complications due vitamins deficiency.
  17. Surgery 02/08/17..I am doing great. I do low impact workouts like water aerobics amd recumbent bike. I have had no complications! SW 278 preop 268 CW 232. I'm loving the changes to my body and spirit!

    10 Days out

Thanks everyone! We decided to take the chance and keep our plans. Now to plan what to bring along with me. Figure my water bottle, and protein. I'm still on full liquids at that time (3 weeks, ugggggh) so that will be the other "complication" as I doubt I'll be finding many acceptable full liquid choices on the road. I will probably just plan that once I know what's working with my tummy and what doesn't.

    Conversion from Lap Band

I had my lapband out 1/12/17 and will have bypass on 4/24. In the process I am exactly where I was 7 yrs ago when I got the band in 2010-80 lbs back on. Annoyed at myself but ready for my new beginning. I was told less complications if you heal after they remove the band. I also had to have an endoscopy nutrition and psych again. It does feel like a long time, but I also know I am ready now. Your time will go fast and your body be ready for the bypass. To 4/24! Our new beginning - Good luck to you!

    Miserable

I wish you all the best.. Only you can make this decision and what is best for you. I have a close friend who is an RN and morbidly obese with many co-morbid,,, bad diabetics. She has begun the process for the VSG. When she came to me I was completely honest with her in regards to my experience and even told her If I could take it back I would not do it. But for her the complications she is facing with her conditions are life threatening. She, as i have diet before only to gain it all back. She has decide to proceed and I will support her decision no matter what. But I will always keep it real. Be very sure of this before you go for surgery.. this is not reversible. If you decide to go forward hope you have a good support system. Glad your on this site because this was a god sent for me as well. We need to support one another despite those who feel differently from our own views. Good luck. Feel free to reach out anytime.
  22. I had surgery with Dr. Ramos Kelly a few days ago. So far no complications or concerns. I'm very happy with the surgeon I chose and the top hospital where surgery took place - Hospital Angeles.

    Surgery in Mexico

Honestly, I've not heard of anyone having yearly checkups for the surgery itself. I think it's pretty much, once it's healed, you're good to go. Everything else should fall under general gastrointestinal functionality and be treated by a GI doctor. I'm not a doctor and I'm not far enough along in the process to speak factually about this, but I've never heard about check-ups. I've got a friend in Michigan who was sleeved a year and a half ago and hasn't had a checkup since. As for complications, I didn't have any (so far) with either of my surgeries, but that's where the patient coordinator comes into play. You've also got a ready connection to Dr. Kuri through her. Their complication rate is pretty low, at least as far as I've heard. I recently heard about a "medical complications" insurance policy for those who do medical tourism. It'll reimburse you for complications encountered if you choose this route. Don't think it's very expensive either. I didn't use it; I heard about it within the past few days...after my surgery. I'd really encourage you to contact Dr. Kuri and his staff via a web request at https://www.lapbandsurgery.com/. Joann will likely be the person to contact you. She's had the band for many years now so she can speak from firsthand experience.

    Surgery in Mexico

So after you got surgery, what kind of check ups have you had? I am worried about having any complications and not having yearly check ups in regards to the surgery itself

    Surgery in Mexico

So sorry for all of the chaos in your life and the loss of your dad. As for going to Mexico for surgery, I've done it twice. The first time was back in 2005 to get my LapBand, and the second was nearly two weeks ago to get it converted to the VSG. Both times, Dr. Pedro Kuri was my surgeon. My wife also used Dr. Kuri for her band back in 2006. Dr. Kuri has an excellent team around him from Carlos, the driver who picks you up at and takes you back to the San Diego airport, Dr. Peterson who gives you your pre-op physical, Joann (patient coordinator and source of information before and after your procedure), and the doctors who fill out his team. All top notch! The only complicating factor is that the hospital he uses doesn't have staff who all speak English. The two years of Spanish I had in high school nearly 30 years ago only goes so far, know what I mean? I made good use of Google Translate on my phone and it got me through a couple of spots. Otherwise, it's $5,500 for the VSG plus any travel expenses you incur in getting to him. I'd be happy to answer any other questions regarding my experience with Dr. Kuri. Just ask.
