My nerves and the Last Supper.

HI Bob, What is it that has you the most nervous/emotional? I do not know if you pray but it helps me and/or to say out loud what it is you are concerned about. Funny I am most nervous about the anesthesia. I have never had a problem with it but still.....My sister had lapband in November of last year and has lost over 100lbs. I am so proud of her....I never knew she could be so small....lol....But she still hates to exercise....some things don't change. Monday I will be one month out for my surgery date. I am sure I will reach out to you for a pep-talk :-)

why is he doing this to me?? WHY??? what did i do?

I think all of our DH's react differently to us being banded but most have these reactions I think becauswe they are scared. Maybe because they do get comfortable with how and who we WERE. I dont think he is intentionally trying to sabatoge you, but I do think that he is a man who is worried about how the band might change you, and more than just phsyically. Luckily my hubbys is not forcing my favorite foods on me but at one point I felt like he was in a way competing with me. About four months post op he started going to the gym at 5am before work and then again after work. Sometimes he even went more than twice a day, it was rediculous! Once when a friend noticed his 20 lb loss he said "Well, someones got to keep up with Michelle". That remarked made me so mad and I didnt get why he was looking at it that way. My mom says he is worried that I will get skinny and leave him like my cousins wife did. (She had gastric bypass and then started cheating on him after losing over 100 lbs-although I cant just blame her, I mean they had to have some marital issues that were kept quiet in order for this to happen, right?) Lets face it. Unfortunately we live in a world where the majority of people do not look at us fat chicks as attractive or beautiful. As pretty as my hubby thought I was, I honestly believe that he didnt think he had to worry about looks from other men or me being hit on before being banded. He was comfortable. I have lost a lot of weight since my surgery in May and recently, it has been much more noticeable. I can already see that he is not used to me getting attention from others. Its made him very nervous and he started acting strange like with the gym thing and then calling me at work like 6 million times a day. I finally had to tell him that Yes, I did this for me but my surgery in a way was for us too-my family and he needed to relax before his actions seriously started causing us relationship problems. Since then thngs have been better. I guess just talk to him and tell him that you need him to be supportive now more than ever. And just because you cant or dont want to eat certain foods anymore doesnt mean that you expect him not to too. Oh, and tell him to pick up after the dogs too, lol! Good Luck!!
  3. I am 46 and married with 3 kids. I have been overweight all of my childhood and most of my adult life. I had a span of from the ages of 20 thru 26 when I was not over weight but actually in very good shape. I have most of the co-morbitites listed in Aetna's list: Asthma, Diabeties, High BP, Congestive heart failure, Afibb & sleep apnea. My problems really started in November of 1997 when I was diagnosed with Lumbar Stenosis. In 2001 I had to be hospitalized with type II diabetes and High BP. In 2004 I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. This past April I had to be rushed to the ER and was diagnosed with Congestive Heart failure and Afibb. Yes, I was a stroke waiting to happen. My Ahrrythmia specialists told me if I didn't start to lose weight in a hurry I would not be around this time next year. The Ahrrythmia Specialists recommended I look in to the Lap-Band procedure. At my heavist I weighed 435 lbs. At my first consult I weighed 413 lbs. I weighed in at 376 lbs on 2/25/08 the day of my surgery. I My goal (besides losing weight) is to cut back on as many meds as possible. My Diabetic injectable (Lantus) has been reduced from 100 units daily to 30 units just because of the weight lost to date.

    When is your 1st fill?

I was banded October 15th and my first fill is November 21 -- the day before Thanksgiving. Yikes! I can't say I'm really hungry. In fact, I've pretty much just been drinking my protein shakes -- and LOTS of water. My dr. requires a 2-week liquid diet after surgery, so next week I'll try mushies.
  7. I was reading some information on stomaphyX procedure which is done through endoscopy....isn't that basically the same as VSG, though it is done to patients who have had RNY previously and stretched out the stomach? StomaphyX - Bariatric Revision for Gastric Bypass Surgery Would sure as heck be nice to have it done without incisions.

My Period Came 2 Weeks Early

OMG! this sounds like me EXACTLY! i took was just sleeved on November 6th!!! i had the same issue at 2 am and then again at 5am last night!!! and i didnt realize what was going on. ESPECIALLY because i havent seen my period in. TWO.YEARS. i have implanon in my arm the birth control. i called the nurses line just to make sure it wasnt anything to freak out about and he said it was totally normal and that it does happen. that is insane that the same exact thing happened to you lol. but we are ok and normal. it just kinda sux for me i loved not getting my period. hope you are healing well and getting your fluids in with no problem still a struggle for me...
  9. Thought I'd share my miserable story of a lesson learned - I got my band in November of 06 and it took about 3-4 months for fills to start having an effect. Two weeks ago I had an adjustment to 6.5cc's - This seems to be my sweet spot. Went to Jackson Hole ( a great burger joint) in Bayside, Queens on Sunday, and kinda forgot about my band... HUGE mistake, as a chunk of burger got stuck... bad. I proceeded to PB in the restaurant bahroom twice, then on the ride home on the Clearview, TNB, 95 and the Hutch before the chunk got unstuck. What a horrible, horrible experience, but lesson learned. So far I've lost 70 pounds and feel great, but must re-concentrate on not just how much I eat, but what I'm eating. Well, that's my story... food for thought! :biggrin1: André
  10. I everyone! I had gastric bypass surgery on 6/24/14. That night at the hospital I was awake all night crying in horrible pain from the gas used during surgery. It felt like all of my insides were cramping in knots. This continued until today...now just smaller cramps. I have not had a bowel movement despite dulcolax (given in hospital), two days using miralax, and resorting to prune juice. Has anyone else experienced this pain & constipation. I've tried to walk but I'm so weak & in so much pain I can't make it outside the house. When I read the boards i'm really depressed because everyone reports feeling great on day 2 or 3. Is it just me? I'm feeling like I've made the worst mistake of my life. Will this ever get better?
  11. I think I've settled in on getting bypassed, so I'm trying to gather all the information I can. Dumping doesn't sound pleasant and I want to get as much information about that as I can. I have read sugar and fat is the biggest contributing factor to dumping. I get added sugar and fat, but what about items that have natural sugars, like fruit? Or natural fats like avocado or nuts? What about sautéed vegetables in olive oil? Or is Dumping more of a personal trigger? What are your go-to alternatives for sugar and fats (oils and butter for cooking) Thanks all! How it really is

What is it that makes us view our bodies in such a distortion. Everytime I have lost significant weight I have always considered myself still fat. And when I was at my highest weight I didn't realize I looked so bloated and large. I mean, it is stupid things. Like before I lost I would only look at myself from the chest up, like my huge butt and stomache wasn't really there. I actually thought those long loose tops hid the bulk of my body. Swollen legs and ankles, only look at your feet in the mornings and then they didn't exist. Health concerns, no problem, they have a pill for that. High blood pressure, they have a pill for that. Except for me it was three pills. Diabetis, they have a pill for that too. Except the pills were not working and my sugar kept creaping up. Cholestrol, no big deal, I am still young and THEY HAVE A PILL FOR THAT. Heart Attack, they do bypass for that. Fatty Liver - okay now that made me stop and think. Liver transplants. Maybe I need to rethink. No one tells you or maybe they did and I didn't listen, okay I know they did and I didn't listen, about what is going to happen a few years down the road if you continue at that weight. I thought I was young and I still had plently of time. Plenty of time to loose weight, plenty of time to start walking. Plenty of time left to get healthy. Bad things only happened to other people, I was fine. Now what was it that ex husband said, repulsed, disgusting. New Hubby, accepted me fat, kind of like it was okay to be me. Okay to be fat, okay to be thin, okay to eat, okay to over eat or under eat. Never belittled me, sneak eating was a thing of the past. If I wanted it, I could finally sit in front of someone and enjoy it. Sneak eating lost it's hold. So maybe it would be okay, okay to change, okay to discover a new way. And now, here I am. I have worked my butt off to loose what I have and I still have more to loose. How did it get this far? How heavy was heavy enough? How much time did I loose? I try to look at myself different now. Try to acknowledge my progress and accept my body as it is. I know I can't go back in time, tell that stupid person that they would end up with saggy hanging skin. But this time I can be different. I can look, really look at me and see progress. Any progress is better than before. Now, if I sit just right and look down at my thighs I see slimness. I cannot believe how much thinner they look. But then if I look at them from another angle I see all the hanging skin and they look quite large. I can look in the mirror and see the difference in my waist, in my arms, are there less dimples in my elbows? Where I end up I don't know, but I'm in it for the long run. I know I will have hanging skin. But, at least there is less. Less stomach, less face, less neck and arms and don't forget the tush. But also, most important, I mean the MOST IMPORTANT, my health is better. When I think that I could have died from a heart attack or complications of diabetis. The band gave me time. And since I will be around longer I think I will accept my body this time, for the first time in my entire life. I may have a hanging stomach and varicose veins, but I now have a strong heart and liver. I think I will dance at my Grandson's wedding in twenty years.

    Anyone from Canada?

you cant revise from bypass to sleeve. you can go from sleeve to bypass, but not the other way around. you can have your pouch made smaller. it is stretchy and so can get bigger over time if you eat too much. a surgeon who does weight loss surgery doesnt do plastic surgery (at least not in the US or CA ). a plastic surgeon would remove excess skin. thats a whole other thing. first you need to be at your goal weight.
  16. Hello! I have been on this app since September 2016 and I have loved reading everyone's success stories! It has been sssooo encouraging and helpful! Now, I finally get to start telling my story! [emoji4] I had my Gastric Bypass Surgery on March 15th, 2017! I lost 20 lbs on the pre-op liquid diet (my surgeon required a 2 week liquid diet) When my surgeon went in, he found that I had lots of scar tissue. He took THREE hours just to get rid of scar tissue! He was still able to perform the Bypass and for that I am so thankful! Because of the extra work he did, I had a little bit longer of a hospital stay and a little bit longer of a recovery process. But, I am still excited to be on this journey! I have not taken any after pics yet but, here are my current stats: HIGH WEIGHT- 272 SURGERY WEIGHT- 250 CURRENT WEIGHT- 235 GOAL WEIGHT- 140

    NERVOUS

I think stress makes you gain weight. My job is very stressful and I gained a lot of weight over a very short period of time. My eating habits did not change so I can only think it was the stress. I was converted from band to bypass 4/3. My surgeon was able to do it in one surgery which was the only thing I was stressing about prior to surgery. She warned me ahead do time that often there is so much scar tissue that she cannot safely do the bypass. You have to heal and they do it at a later time. My insurance has a dollar cap on bariatric procedures so if I did not get it converted in one surgery I was not going to be able to have a second due to costs. After all the worry she was able to do it but the surgery was very long. It took better than 4 hours. Do not worry about the weight gain and try to desires as you are able. I go for a walk or listen to music or read to help with the stress. Good luck to you!! Jennie

    Where's my period?

Maggie, I hope by now your cycle has came. I was very regular since I am on the pill and have been for 12 years. Since surgery 9/05 I have missed and have had weird cyles. I had 2 cycles in 9. 1 a week before surgery and then another the day after surgery which lasted a week. I did not have a cycle in November.

    No alcohol ever?

Good question Fishy....and for me the answer is yes. We are very into wine collecting. Many friends own wineries and we spend a lot of time learning about their craft. We enjoy it a lot. It has nothing to do with getting drunk, nor do we drink it with Breakfast lunch and dinner (every day LOL) but it's an enjoyable part of our life that we share with friends. If I could never have a drink of wine again I would live. But I enjoy it and would just assume keep it as a part of my life. I do not enjoy drinking heavily at a party til I can't stand...that kind of thing belongs to youth I guess But responsible drinking isn't a bad thing in my mind...as long as you are at least three days past surgery (KIDDING!!!!) I should mention. I had this surgery verses the bypass because it allowed me to live a more normal life, and being able to drink was one of the factors. I wasn't willing to leave the whole cellar to my dh lol
  21. Hey all, Since we are crossing over to bandland. I was wondering when are you scheduled for your first fill? I'm November 7th..
  22. ssfano

    When is your 1st fill?

I went to my first post op doctor's appoinment today. He scheduled my first fill for November 26. They were going to schedule it just before Thanksgiving, but decided it wouldn't be good with the holiday just around the corner. They were thinking that if there was any problem with the fill, it would be too hectic a time. I was thinking I needed the fill (fix) to keep me "good" through the holiday. Oh well. He also yanked off the last two sterile strips. I decided he could, but I wasn't. If he caused it to open, he could repair. On the 26th he said I would also meet with a dietician.
  23. My sense of taste was out of whack for a few months post-op. And I've seen the question about changes in the way food tastes come up quite often on the board. This article was posted on WebMD - a UK hospital has evidence that it is pretty common to experience changes in the way things taste and smell after bariatric surgery. My personal theory is that since we are literally forced to give up sugar (between the pre-op diet and going through the food stages post-op), our sense of taste is reset and we're no longer under the influence of sugar and processed foods. Taste Changes Reported After Weight-Loss Surgery Sense of smell also altered for some patients in British study WebMD News from HealthDay By Robert Preidt HealthDay Reporter FRIDAY, April 18, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- After weight-loss surgery, many patients report changes in appetite, taste and smell, a new study says. One positive aspect of these changes is that they may lead patients to lose even more weight, the researchers suggested. The study included 103 British patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, in which the stomach is made smaller and the small intestines is shortened. Of those, 97 percent said their appetite changed after the surgery, and 42 percent said their sense of smell changed. Taste changes occurred in 73 percent of the patients, especially when it came to sweet and sour tastes, the researchers found. They especially noted changes in the taste of chicken, beef, pork, roast meat, lamb, sausages, fish, fast food, chocolate, greasy food, pasta and rice. Nearly three-quarters of patients said they developed a dislike of certain foods, especially meat products. One-third avoided chicken, minced beef, beef steak, lamb, sausages, bacon or ham. About 12 percent had an aversion to starches such as rice, pasta, bread and pastry and for dairy products such as cream, cheese, ice cream and eggs, 4 percent to vegetables, 3 percent to fruit and 1 percent to canned fish. The researchers also found that patients with a newly developed distaste for certain foods lost an average of nearly 18 pounds more after their surgery than those whose taste wasn't affected, according to the study recently published online in the journal Obesity Surgery. Although the study found an association between weight-loss surgery and sensory changes, it did not establish cause-and-effect. The taste and smell changes experienced by many patients after weight-loss surgery may be due to a combination of gut hormone and central nervous system effects, according to lead author Lisa Graham, of the Leicester Royal Infirmary. She noted that patients considering weight-loss surgery are typically told about the possible loss of taste and smell. http://www.webmd.com/diet/weight-loss-surgery/news/20140418/appetite-taste-changes-reported-after-weight-loss-surgery

    Bariatric Myths??

Yeah I tend to be a sceptic sometimes. I remember asking my surgeon that if the bypass is considered malabsorptive, how will I be assured my vitamins will be enough. He just smiled and said not to worry, just take them. Of the 4 doctors in that office he's the only one that does the RNYs. All the rest do the sleeve. I guess it's the popular choice nowadays. I'm looking forward to that day myself. And I've seen your pics. You look fantastic!
  25. I would just like to run this scenario by you guys and get opinions. I had my 4th fill on November 23rd and was very very tight. I decided to try and wait to see if I get loose at the 2 week mark as usual. Right now, being over 2 weeks and I still cannot eat anything but mushies and crap food (ice cream, etc). Even with ice cream, I cannot eat much before I feel like throwing up. I have tried grinding up meat, and even that I cant get down. I did an experiment, and with ground up chili, I could only eat 2 oz before I got pain in my chest. I am going today for an unfill (small). Is that what you would do? oh, and I have stopped losing weight because I am eating all the wrong stuff, thats all that will comfortably go down. Opinions welcome, although I will cry if you slap me (verbally) thanks!
