  1. I was a revision which means weight loss is slower, but I am 5'4" and started my journey at 286 lbs and today I am 246.3. I am 1-month post-op. I'm using the 3 patches that the bypass patients use plus one multivitamin.

    Is it true?

I believe they can do the sleeve with the bypass just reroute the small intestines.

The grass really IS greener in Onederville!!!

HI!!!!! I am finally here!!! As of today, 7 September, Onederville AND the 100+ loss club has a new member and her name is Annette! On 4 November 2010 I reached my highest weight of 300 pounds......and I knew I had to do something. I had my first consultation with my surgeon on 18 January 2010 weighing 293 pounds. I had my surgery on 22 February 2010 weighing 279.4 pounds. And now, 7 September 2010 I weigh 199.4.... I am so excited I just can't stand it!!! I started out wearing a tight 26 and now I am in a comfortable 16. I can cross my legs again, I can...well...enjoy life! This is the best decision I have ever made in regards to my health. There are times I think "why did I do this", but eh, I'm sure everyone does. But the benefits surely out-weigh the pitfalls!!! Thanks for letting me share! This site is the greatest sanity-saver ever when it comes to the lap-band® and my questions and concerns. I wish well to all! ~Annette~
  4. Hi everyone, I'm very new here (first post).. I had been meaning to find a good forum for support/info, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Now I am really needing advice, and it's of course Christmas so I can't reach out to my surgical team. I had RXY two weeks ago tomorrow, my recovery has been totally great to this point, a breeze. But as of about 3am yesterday I've been having bouts of "vomiting" every 4-5 hours. However, when I vomit, absolutely nothing is coming up. Not a morsel of food (and yes I was eating bits of things throughout the day--watermelon, a few banana slices, 2 T of mashed potato) or liquid, nor even any kind of stomach juices or bile. Normally, even if your stomach is totally empty and you're dry heaving, you at least get some of that super gross, yellow stomach acid. In every other respect, my vomiting episodes are normal, with the heaving and retching, and muscles seizing up. But I literally just get the pre-pukinh saliva in my mouth that I spit out. I feel fine in between these bouts of vomiting, until about 5 minutes before when I know it's coming. I may have a fever, but can't find my thermometer. Now, at this point I will add that three days prior to my getting ill, my mother has what she says is the same thing. 24 hours of vomiting with nothing coming up, no stomach acid, no food or liquid. (Incidentally she also had a gastric bypass 8 years ago.) My last instance of "throwing up" was around 3:30am this morning, so not sure if it's going to happen again. I had a few sips of Protein drink, and lots of Water so far today. May or may not be related, but I do feel constipated, and my last BM was diarrhea about three days ago. SO. I'm not sure if this is just a normal, poorly-timed case of a contagious stomach bug. It seems weird that I have not vomited up ANYTHING at all at any time though. Or, is there something wrong with my stomach? A fistula? A leak? I haven't had any abdominal pain to speak of. I also worry that if it IS just a stomach bug, all the vomiting may do some kind of damage inside as well. Does anyone have any thoughts for me, or any similar experiences? I would be really grateful for any ideas or words of wisdom. It's terrible timing, since it's a holiday weekend and I can't reach my surgeon's office or the program RN. All I could do would be to go into Emergency... I just don't know. Hannah in Oregon
  5. You dont want to mess with the sleeve if you already have had reflux issues. I converted to bypass 2 1/2 months ago and although I wasnt very happy the first 6 weeks I have come around and its not so bad. I do dump on cereal or heavy carbs so I just dont eat that stuff especially in the mornings !!! I can drink alcohol and I dont dump on that. It really varies person to person. I know a woman who has never dumped with the bypass and she said she wish she did !! It is a good deterrent for sure.
  6. Hi 🧡 I didn’t read the other replies but I had gastric bypass surgery April 29th 2019. I started out 5’ 208+ lbs and in under a year I lost 106lbs. I do not regret that decision at all. I stick to mainly a low carb way of eating And keep daily log of my meals, protein and calories BUT I do have fruit now no dumping and I have had a little wine here and there no dumping I’ve also had a margarita (whatever option had the least sugar) and I have had Prosecco which usually carbonated is a no no but I do have energy drinks sometimes too, I let the bubbly go out a bit. I didn’t have these until I was close to goal, well I admit I did cheat with the margarita a little early but otherwise I kept to my strict way of eating and slowly added things at goal. well I’m rambling. You Feel it out as you go through the steps when you have surgery. But You won’t regret gastric bypass surgery. I didn’t and would do it again even knowing how hard it was for me with my lifelong chronic illness and disability.
  7. I have reflux and was told bypass was a better choice. When I meet with my surgeon on the 6th of August, than I will know my surgery date.

How long were you off work after surgery?

I had bypass was in the hospital for 4 days, but was able to work after. I pretty much was never in pain. I had a surgery on Tuesday and got home on Friday later afternoon, so went to work on Monday, but I work remotely , so no commute or walking, but I felt up to it if I needed to. But dont be too hard on yourself, if you feel on Sunday like you need more rest, let work know you will probably not be back in until Wednesday, you need to be easy on your body the first few days after surgery. Wishing you good luck and a healthy speedy recovery!!!!
  9. My surgery for gastric bypass is Dec 1. Im ready but also freaking out.
  10. @@RealME1985 There is a Seattle meet-up happening on November 16th in Bothell. Search local chapters to find details....
  11. Yes, it's possible. It's not going to be a classic RNY bypass but the anastomosis will be changed to an RNY one anyway. I think I'm going to get this along with hiatoplastic and gastropexia (hernia is back again and with it reflux got worse). I'm still on the fence though because at the moment things seem to be better again. ETA: fixing bile reflux after MGB is obviously quite like fixing bile reflux after partial gastrectomy with a Bilroth II anastomosis. They change the anastomosis into an RNY one.
  12. I was good up until about 4 months, then started losing a lot. I had Bypass surgery Oct 10. I have steadily taken in a lot of protein with Unjury and Premier Protein, as well as lots of chicken, cheese, eggs, etc. I have lost a lot in two months. I also took Biotin from the beginning and two months ago started on another product that has horsetail product in it, etc. Still lost hair. I believe it is finally quitting and I am at six months from surgery today. My hairdresser said it is coming back in, but it is very thin and I have always had thick hair. From what I read there is not much you can do about it except take some supplements. I am very good at taking my bariatric vitamins and calcium 3x a day as well. I think it is just part of the surgery.

    Sleeved March 3 now Bypass!

Sarabeth3569 - I had sleeve on Dec 21, 2012. I am probably going to be going through revision to bypass. Can you tell me how your process has been, struggles, non struggles, good days, bad days, etc... I was about 289 lbs when I had Sleeve done. I got down to 189. Then I got pregnant and Jumped up to 233. Now I'm back to 210, and I can't get my sleeve into gear. I'm eating way more than I should be able to, and I would like to get back into gear with all of this. It would be awesome to have an email friend.

    Having my doubts

Okay. First of all I think what you are having to go through is a bunch of dog crap. No one should have to wait 6 months for this surgery. You obviously cannot do well on a diet or you wouldn't be obese!!! So what, that figure your going to be able to do well now? What crap I am so sorry you have the waiting period. If it was me- and this is just me! I would stuff my bra with weights on the first weight in and take one out every time. Because I don't think it's right to withhold a life saving surgery from someone because they can't go on a diet- which is why they need it in the first place. This surgery is amazing and you Should do whatever it takes to make it happen. Try and do well most of the time when you can. Read the book intuitive eating. It will help you find a good steady flow on maintaining your weight so you don't gain. Make some food choices but don't fall into deprivation or you will binge and gain weight. Wait the 6 months. Try and incorporate some healthy habits and try to get on track with your smoking. It's hard to quit coping mechanisms and it's hard to make life changes but you can do it. Smoking needs to go because it will destroy your Health and it won't work after surgery. But give yourself a break okay. You are making progress and sometimes you have to take a step back and try again. As far as trying to lose a bunch of weight before surgery- if my doctor had requires that I would have looked elsewhere. Seriously. If you could lose weight so easily why in the heck would you do this!! My doctor did not require a weight loss test. I had to meet with him and fast the day before and that was it. He is smart enough to realize that we can't loose weight. Duh. Why put us through more mental and emotional torture??? You should not do that to yourself. Find a new doctor and ask them what their requirements are up front. If they require weightloss pass!!! Especially if you don't think you can do it. Some people can and good for them. For me I was so good and carb addicted it would have sent me into a binge for sure which leads to emotional upset and feelings of failure and self worth. I said no more. Obesity is a disease and your struggling with it. Be kind to yourself. Now that I have had bypass all of my food cravings and need for sugar have vanished. Food is wonderful but I don't need it to be happy and it doesn't run my life. This surgery gave me my life back and you need to go for it. You will not regret it I promise. Do whatever you need to do for YOUR best interest.

My husband diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. :'(

Thank you everyone. I don't know what to do with myself. I'm strong for him during the day but when he sleeps, I cry. The worse thing is looking into his eyes knowing nothing can be done. I asked his PCP TWO YEARS AGO to do a CT because he has two brothers and his Dad that died from cancer. He is the baby of the family at 48. He just had a birthday in October. Every doctor we see says it is too far gone. My husband hasn't ever been a complainer. Never been sick. Then he just got really sick two months ago. I did ask the Dr to do a ct two years ago, a year ago, then in August, November and then he got so sick in Dec. HE just didn't see the need eventhough Bear's family had cancer. I think something could have been done if HE had just listened to me and done the scan. We could have caught it early. Now they say any treatment may shorten his life. GOD... I'm so lost. My husband is the best man I know. Yes, I'm still having esophageal spasms and GERD issues. I pray everyday for strength. I need to be here for my husband. He is a shell of his former self. So sad. My heart is shattered. I'm thankful I have my faith and Jesus by me. This isn't about me though, it is about him. I put my pride on the floor when I put up the fundraiser. I hated doing it but sometimes you just have to. Thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes. I love all of you. If you look at the pictures on the fundraiser page.. you can see he has aged 20 years. I don't know what I will do without him.

    Needing to Vent

Hi! I’m from the NE, too. Albany, NY to be exact. You can do this! I will be having a hiatal hernia repaired with my bypass surgery, too. It is pretty common from what I hear. I have anxiety, too— and I’ve definitely have a few panic attacks over going through with this. But I’ve told myself that this is my best chance at a healthy, long life... You may get gallstones, you may get them even without the surgery. I had them years ago. They are uncomfortable, but not... end of the world bad. The gallbladder removal surgery is quite simple for most people. As someone who has been through the gallstone thing, it wasn’t as bad as some of the things I may experience if l don’t address my weight- so I wouldn’t let the possibility of it deter you. Best of luck to you and welcome!

    Montreal Sleevers?

Hi Miker1, I had my sleeve done in Montreal in November and I had all of the same fears you mention in your post, with of course my largest fear being death and leaving my two young children behind. I went into the surgery at almost 300lbs and I am 5'8", so my BMI was 44. I did mine privately in Montreal and I only spent 1 night in the clinic and was then moved to a hotel where I had round the clock nursing care for another 2 days. Everything went very well and so far no major issues. I also found out after my surgery that I had severe sleep apnea that I was completely unaware of and despite that everything went well and no complications with the anesthetic. I am currently 3 months out and have lost 70lbs as of yesterday. No one can predict what your outcome will look like, and nor do I have an understanding of what your comorbidities are and what type of risk factors you have, however, just know that I was petrified as well and deeply concerned about the surgery even up until then brought me into the OR and yet everything worked out just fine. It's natural to be scared because it's such a big decision. So far I have had no regrets and am extremely happy I did this - for myself and for my children with whom I am more involved with now because I can move better and because I am happier. Where are you having your surgery done?

It's My Blog I'll Say What i Want To

Guess who bashed my band. It was my primary doctor. She wanted me to be sleeved or have bypass. Why you say? Because none of her banded patients ever lost more than 40 lbs. Well I needed to lose at least 100 lbs. and I got banded anyway. I wanted less invasive and that's what I had. And guess what....I've lost 126 lbs. and....I am now smaller than the doctor. Sweeeet!!

    Hospital Stay

My bypass was 8/11 and they released me 8/13. Re-admitted 8/15 with acute abdominal hemorrhage and went home 8/17. No pain at all but super duper nausea. Good luck to you!
