    Leaking, leaking, leaking

it's awful to hear that someone else is going through it. Did you find you gained weight while the band was leaking? The only times I was too tight in the last 12 months was when he tried filling me right up to try to 'test' the band. Both times I had to have an unfill the next day because I wasn't even able to hold down my own saliva. It proved, I guess, that I could get over-tight if he pushed it too far too fast. But aside from those two days, I've not really had restriction that's lasted more than a week after a fill before I could eat anything I wanted again. I am pretty sure I'm going to be asking for a band replacement instead of a revision to a sleeve, so am going a different route from you. I hope both of us manage to get some peace from what we're choosing. Good luck.

WATER ... It's sposed to be good for ya!

Truth is, it DOESN'T matter if you drink water right before eating, unless you are too tight. The water goes right through your band into your stomach and doesn't mix with food at all. I drink water right up until I eat--the water actually hydrates the stomach tissues where the band is, which is a good thing. Bypass patients can't drink right before eating because the water will sit in their stomachs and impede their ability to eat food. But us bandsters are different. Only if your band is too tight will the water sit in there and prevent you from eating a full meal. That's why we avoid liquid calories--the band doesn't keep them in the upper stomach pouch at all, they just go right through. Your first instincts were correct. And it's hard to get in a lot of water if you're always waiting so long before and after eating. (OF course, you need to wait the proper amount of time AFTER eating--for reasons that have been well explained already.)

  4. Hi Everyone I have just started the journey to a better life. I am 29 years ol and my BMI is 48. I have tried every diet out there and nothing has worked. Right now I have just started the process of getting one of the procedures done. I attended the seminar. The next step for me is picking which surgery I think best suits me, one of the bypasses or one of the bands. I am leaning toward the lapband but nothing has been decided for sure yet. I guess that is why I am here, to hear about others experiences and not be so afraid of having this done. So that is a little about why I am here. Just thought that I would introduce myself. Please let me know your experiences with the BAND, I would love to hear both successful and about struggles. Thanks!

    Any Upstater's (central NY)?

wow, lot's of fellow cnyer's. congrats to all that have had it done & are doing so well. i'm just beginning to research. i was about to do the surgical bypass, but decided against it. a co-worker had had it done & had serious complications. i thought i was out of luck until i saw the lap-band commercials. i went to my family dr. & told him i wanted to have this done & he's all for it. my diabetes is out of control, my b.p. is pretty high; meds control that, and my cholesterol is pretty high. i had my grandson here for the week...chasing a 2-1/2 yr old around really made me think i should get moving on this SOON. i'm not getting any younger or thinner just sittin' here. keep up the good work fellow nyer's...let's make ny a healthier place to live

    Band-It No More

Banded December 2009. De-banded August 1, 2012. And rather sad about the whole affair. From the beginning my band and I have not gotten along well. I've had more unfills than I had fills. End result was a slipped band with a prolapsed stomach which resulted in excruciating pain and misery. The surgeon had hoped to take the band out and convert to a by-pass while I was on the table. However, once inside he found my stomach to be very irritated and my stomach wall to be extremely thinned out from the prolapse and he felt the risk of complication was too significant. So now I'm home, no band, no bypass, and terrified that the 70+ pounds I've lost with the band will be chasing me down trying to reattach themselves. I can schedule bypass in 6-12 months depending on how I heal. ::sigh::

    Band-It No More

Sorry to hear that! Let your stomach heal and I bet you will be able to get the bypass. I have heard this a lot for getting a revision from the band to either sleeve or bypass. There is sometimes stomach damage from the band and you just have to let yourself heal. Maybe do weight watchers or something while you are waiting for the bypass. I know you're disappointed but at least you are on the mend now. Big hugs going your way

    Talk about losing motivation...

@@mcplu28 A little perspective: You lost 42 (43?) lbs in 3 months on your own. I HAD THE SLEEVE DONE, and I lost 52 in 3 mos...to me, that means you're kicking ass Our docs will do the sleeve on very high BMI patients and then revise to bypass or DS when they've lost some of the weight. Do get a second opinion, for your own peace of mind if nothing else. Congratulations on your amazing results so far...don't give up and don't get discouraged. You're on the road to saving your own life <3
  11. It's been 6 months since my original gastric bypass, which I then had reversed to a sleeve about three months ago. I still cannot eat without vomiting and pain. Sometimes, some days, I can do yogurt or a pretzel. I sometimes can handle cheese and Soups. But there are many days I can't. I haven't had more than 300 calories a day in six months. With the sleeve everything hurts and feels like it gets stuck and I have to make myself throw up to feel better. Anyone else experiencing an inability to advance their diet at three months?
  12. Yay you! Congrats! I hope my revision surgery achieves the same results.. 30 down 70 to go for me!

    I really need help deciding!

I first contemplated bypass surgery. In the end, the decision maker for me was the complications rate. Bypass surgery has a 10% complications rate that includes some serious complications like malnutrition and death. The lap band has only .01% complication rate and those complications are usually fairly minor (slippage, which can sometimes be corrected by going back to a liquid diet, for example). Then, the recovery rate for bypass is a couple of weeks at best and can take longer. Lap band is nothing near that. While you may be tender, experience gas, etc., you can return to your normal life within days. I had surgery on Tuesday and went back to work on Friday -- yes, I have a sit-down job, but I'm betting you probably do too. With bypass, eating sweets can trigger dumping syndrome, which I hear can be pretty awful. I ate a bite of birthday cake yesterday, frosting and all, and it didn't make a bit of difference. And one other thing is that lap band is aiming for 1-2 pounds per week weight loss, which isn't crzy fast and is less likely to leave you with a lot of loose skin; not so for bypass surgery. So now you know what helped me make my decision.
  14. Ok....I'm 3 weeks post op today and am just coming home from the ER because of bn dehydrated. Since being sleeved, I have been back in the ER 2wice for dehydration and after the first time in the ER, a day later I was readmitted into the hospital for 3 days. This acid reflux is really the pits for me!! I'm not able to get down a good 8oz of fluid and I'm feeling like crap! I'm not fully vomiting, but whatever I try drinking or eating, it comes right back up to the back of my mouth and its NASTY....NASTY....NASTY!!!! My meds have been increased but the sad thing is since I can't get much fluids in, the meds aren't dissolving really like it needs to. On top of that, (not to get tooo nasty), I'm not using the bathroom like I should be. So, my question is, is their anyone else having this problem? If so, how r u dealing with it?? I mean the only thing that seems to kinda stay down are SF popsicles. I know it takes a while to get things down, but like all day today b4 going to ER, I had maybe 4ozs of my soy milk and protein. I just finished the rest of it.....other than that, I had 2 bags of IV fluids. I pray this gets better, my doc said if not I may have to go back in for bypass. I just feel miserable and often a lil weak. Anyone else like this??

    Lapband removal b/c of slippage

(Hugs), everything will be ok! Many people need to have their bands removed, and it is possible (usually) to get a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy instead. Both of those surgeries are permanent, so this would never happen again. Many people do experience weight regain after band removal, so it's good to keep to a limited diet once you are eating again. I notice this is your first post. Welcome!
  17. Hello and welcome!! What a wonderful PaPa you are!! All of us revision folks know what you mean about the band. We all have different stories about how we became overweight, but the bottom line is that the band is just not a good tool for sustained weight loss. I am really happy your approval process is going well. Good luck and keep us posted!!

    CNN Video Clip

Patty - First off I want to start off by saying WAY TO GO on your success!! I also want to say sorry for the loss of your friend. Very cool to get exposure on CNN. I don't think I could do an interview like yourself. I think you have impacted many people out there and possibly gave them another option to Gastric Bypass. Awesome, Awesome, Awesome! I am so glad I chose the band it has changed my life in so many ways. You Go Girl!

Ur view please - Sleeve vs Bypass

btw, when i mentioned higher risk with the bypass, that is taking in consideration the lack of expertise with the procedure for obesity in Singapore.
  20. You have proved that you can lose weight with the band so I think the sleeve would be best for you. It is not as invasive as the bypass and would be better for you in the long run if you are considering having chldren. All the best for the future. It will be your decision in the end and I wish you well which ever procedure you choose.
  21. Hi there, I was banded in Feb 2003 and went from 133 kg to 60 kg. Unfortunately the band slipped and I had emergency surgery in May 2008. Living such a different life which included working out 5x / week, cutting out sugared drinks etc, I thought I could keep the weight off, but lo and behold ... it was not to be ... and I have since gained over 20kg = > 44 lbs. Have gone back to the surgeons and have been asked to consider either the sleeve or the gastric bypass. Would greatly appreciate any thoughts / inputs from all you experienced folks. Maybe if I give u a little info about me, it may be easier for you to give me your input ... I just turned 33 ... single with no kids. Am not attached now but would like to have a kid of my own someday. Had been diabetic and on insulin and medication since I was 16 but the lap band and weight loss helped me to be diabetes free. Had problems with menstrual cycles, but the weight loss fixed that too as it did with my fatty liver, sleep apnea, hypertension, chronic backaches etc. And going back to where I was isn't the most comforting thought. Any input would be great ...

    New here, new choice!

I had revision band to sleeve surgery on a Friday, went home on Sunday, and was back in the office (I work from home) part of the day on Monday. I only took pain meds for a few days. I also had my gall bladder removed and a hiatal hernia repaired. The hardest part of sitting at my desk was that my back got tired pretty quickly. So just take lots of breaks if you can - get up and walk around, etc. They'll have you up and walking in the hospital a few hours after surgery, so this is something you're supposed ot be doing anyway. As for a pump - my doc gives an automatic pain pump that you wear on a halter that lasts about 3-4 days post-op. It had 2 tiny tubes running out of it that went directly into my abdomen below my breastbone. When it was empty I pulled out the tubes myself and tossed it all in the trash - easy breezy! And thank goodness you aren't having a band! Those things are a pain the booty!
  23. I had a revision 3mths out b/c of a flipped port. It was a lot easier then the actual LBS. When my daughter picked me up at the hospital, she said " you don't look like you just had surgery", nurse said " she does look good, doesn't she". My Dr said a flipped port is really uncommon, you're more likely to have a leaking tube. I was only his 2nd pt to have this happen, out of hundreds. Good luck!
  24. Hi, I've just had my band to sleeve revision carried out this week in one go. Having read this read I'm now worried that this process should have involved two steps. My surgeon never suggested that I should have two separate operations. Why do you think having two separate surgeries reduce the chances of a leak? Please reply as soon as possible because I'm worried. Thank you.
  25. I had a SIPS approved at 48.8 BMI thru BCBSIL. But it want easy. My first surgery not a revision.
