    Post op complications

I've wondered the same thing & complications seem to be rare. Mines the 30th & I'm hopeful it will be smooth sailing!

    Post op complications

No complications yet and absolutely no regrets. Sleeved 5/22
  3. Hi All- juu wondering if any of you could tell me about the complications you had from the surgery? Or if any of you regret having the surgery and why? Thanks
  4. So it's been one year since surgery. I am so thankful everyday for my sleeve. Before surgery I had to be on oxygen because I was so overweight I couldn't breathe properly and could hardly walk around a room without getting out of breath. Now I can walk 6 miles and up hills without stopping for a rest. I'm down 200 since surgery and 263 overall. I started at a size 36/38 (probably stretching it out) and now I'm a 18/20 too and 22 bottom (though probably smaller because of my extra skin...that will be gone soon though). I'm having a panniculectomy on June 5th. I'm nervous but also excited. Anyone who has had it...what are some things you think I'll need to help me out while recovering! I had a really rough 6 months after surgery with a bunch of complications but even with all of that I would do this again in a heartbeat. My stats are: Highest: 540 Surgery: 480 Current: 277.2 Goal: 199 Height: 5'10 I am almost exactly half who I used to be.

    Post - OB Problems

So sorry you're going through this complication. How frustrating! I hope they're able to get things fixed up and feeling better soon.
  7. I'm in sort of the same boat but i have the opposite concern. I am 5'7" and weigh 170. I'm getting the band out and the sleeve in one surgery this coming Friday. I don't have my pre op appt with the doc until the day before and I was going to ask him if he could make the sleeve bigger to avoid acid reflux, dehydration and to hopefully decrease complications. I've had the fill completely out for 2 weeks and already gained 5 lbs! But I was successful in losing 85% of my weight on the band and kept it off 10 years so I don't know if I need such a small sleeve. But from what newbie says, maybe I don't have a choice.
  8. Hi. I'm ten days out after a VGS. I spent 4 days in the hospital due to complications. My lungs were congested at first, due to an underlying lung/blood disorder. After that, my blood sugar fell through the floor and I had to drink juice and eat glucose paste to bring it up. I was pre-diabetic, almost type-2 diabetic. All that time, I was on an IV with lactated ringers (regular IV drip to hydrate). On Thursday, my 8th day, I was supposed to start the puréed/mushy food stage, which would last for 2 weeks. I cannot get food down because it hurts so much and am having trouble getting my protein shakes down, too. I should be eating 3 a day, and have trouble with one. I know what I should be eating, but I'm not sue how much - is a tablespoon okay 10 days out? I'm not hungry, but feel as though I should follow the plan given. It's almost impossible to get the shakes down. How can I overcome this? Thank you so much! My HW was 269 My SW was 244 My CW is 230, I think (scale is wonky) =^..^=

    Pre-Op Feelings

I will say I'm glad I took my pre op. visits seriously. I've had absolutely no problems post op. My team of docs insists it's because I followed instructions to the letter before and after my roux-en-y. The hospital nurses even chuckled at me cause I packed my own shot glass to take sips of water out of in hospital...they had medicine cups for me....said most people don't really practice sipping before surgery. I still shake my head when I think about those in my group who continually reported they hadn't started that yet...when asked the Myriad of questions each month. Each of them had numerous complications of various degress...I felt bad for them but knew they had not truly taken the pe-op. lessons to heart . That said it's never to late to start getting ready. You can do a lot in a month. I believe I heard most habits take a month to break so I would think a month of practice is better than no practice at all. It's tough to make these lifestyle changes. But even those in my group who had issues would not have changed the decision to have surgery. Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. Both surgeries can lead to long term success and both surgeries have pros and cons. Go through your needs and medical risk factors with your doctor and match them to the surgery and post-surgery lifestyle that best suits you. Ignore the weight loss statistics. They are misleading because they are averages and include people who are non-compliant. It is true that RNY loses faster up front, but over the years it equals out and an individual will lose weight in direct relation to how well they follow their program. My decision factors that led me to choose the sleeve were that I didn't want malabsorption and I didn't have diabetes or gerd, so there was no benefit to choosing the more complicated surgery. If I had more to lose, or had diabetes or gerd, I may have chosen differently.

    Bandster updates

Same here. I got my band in January 2011. I've had terrible complications for several years and will hopefully be having a revision to RNY in July 2017. I do not recommend lapband to anyone! I'm nervous about the RNY because I am "older" but it has to be done. My BMI is 29.5 now but I still need the revision because of my health problems cannot afford to gain all of my weight back. Best of luck on your surgery. It's got to be more effective and safer than the band.
  12. Bypass and sleeve are both good choices. But they are also just tools. If you don't change your lifestyle you will gain the weight back no matter which surgery you choose. The weight doesn't just come back by itself. My surgeon recommended the sleeve for me, less complications and bypass is bad if you want kids in the future.

    Full liquid vs puréed

I went straight to full fluids, after doing clear fluids at the hospital. I had yogurt drinks, unsweetened applesauce, milk, tons of water, and took my meds with tiny amounts of apple juice (like less than 10mL). If they've already done leak tests/barium swallow on you to verify your digestive parts are working correctly (which I'm pretty sure a clear fluid diet goes into, they need to see you can drink water/eat ice chips without leaks or complications), I don't get why they wouldn't pass you immediately to full fluids. Puree.. you probably want to wait a week or two after surgery. For puree I had beans/melted block cheese, oatmeal, meat sauce (i.e. Ragu), and still had a few things from full fluids. Did that for a few more weeks and went on to soft solids and then normal.

    Liquid Diet

I used my fear of complications as motivation. Like, big fat liver could get injured during surgery Since I'm a huge baby it worked well!
  15. Hi, I don't want to rain on your parade. But my hubby had his Sleeve done by him. I WOULD NOT chance it. That Hospital isn't good. They have a hard time with understanding what you are saying. The nurses never washed their hands, only 1 nurse used the santizer, I am not lying they removed my hubby's IV without using gloves. Not once did they use gloves. The sad thing about that is my hubby has HEP B. We paid for a suite and they put us in a crappy room. He started doing surgeries early that morning and did them all day until 10pm that night. The medication that you pay $50.00 for is a joke, it did nothing for pain. If he had been in a lot of pain he would have been in trouble. He was released without discharge papers at all. When he was supposed to get the RNY but it ended up being the SLEEVE. When I ask for paperwork for that surgery they told me that RNY and Sleeve are the same. Which they are NOT. We had to bring our own washclothes from home. When I tried to explain that he was sick to his stomach they had no idea what I was talking about. We went thru the site called "BELITE WEIGHT LOSS" they were supposed to have everything taken care of. NOT They want their money right away. Which was not a probem at all. We paid for the RNY and when he didn't get that surgery there was a refund coming but they didn't give the amount that they should it was less. Them stating that his surgery was so complicating was the reason. At that time we just wanted it to be over and get home!! Just beware. You can also ask one of the adminstrator here on this site what they have heard about them. I hope everything goes ok.
  16. I really don't understand why people need to run ANY of the choices each person makes, that it really is a personal choice. What works for me may not work for you. I had the RNY and my hubby had a SLEEVE. Just in our case, I defintly lost all my weight in 6 months with an 8# gain in 4 years. I have maintained my 1234# loss for almost 4 years. He had his Sleeve a year ago this June. He has lost 135#'s but mostly it is the food choices he makes. First off he weighed 460# now he weighs 330#'s. He still working on it. His choice defintly (he had the Lap Band for 13years) even back then was the RNY. He had complications after they removed the Band. That was in 2013. So in 2016 we went to Mexico for his surgery. When they got in there his band had caused so much scar tissue that he ended up with the Sleeve. My opinion on which surgery is the best would be WHATEVER YOU AND YOUR DR DECIDES ON. Educate yourself on all options. Then make a informed decision of which one works for you. Good Luck in whichever way you go.
  17. I dumped in the first 6 months with the sleeve. I did it twice making dumb choices. I haven't dumped since. Also most RNY people only dump in the beginning also. Dumping isn't an always thing for most people. There is no reason to choose a surgery on dumping. A lot of people that are sweets lovers and choose RNY are disappointed to learn long term they have eat all the sweets they want. Nothing will stop you from eating cake but you. What surgery you want is a personal choice. I picked the sleeve because it just seemed more logical to me. I'm single, live alone, not near family and I needed something with fast recovery, the least amount of long term maintenance and the lower complications rates. @MarinaGirl seems to really hate the sleeve for reasons that don't even make sense. She had an experimental surgery that has little data to back up that isn't even widely performed. No one rags on her about that, but she makes a point to show up in every thread she can and bash the sleeve. If you really listen to Dr Weiner he says every WLS should be considered a one time shot, and the reason is because you only get the metabolic reset once. Revisions don't give people the same metabolic reset as the first time. Plus with the exception of the band, because the band is just a terrible product, the reason people need revisions has nothing to do with the surgery and every thing to do with their food addiction, which he also explains. If someone is a food addict, surgery is not going to save them, no matter how many times they have it done. GERD is at a 20% in the general population and 10% in sleevers. If you already have GERD prior to surgery then getting the sleeve (unless the cause of your GERD is a hiatal hernia) is not a smart option. @Terri70 You just have to pick. The weight loss in the end will be about the same no matter what surgery you choose, because how much weight you lose and if you maintain depends solely on you and your choices. Weight loss surgery after about 6 months won't do the work for you, you have to. So the surgery you choose just depends on what you are most comfortable with.
  18. This is all new to me and still learning as I go along. I have been very successful with my surgery and post surgery. Had no complications and eating while sticking to the "diet" has been challenging. I'm on my last few days of the pureed or "baby food" as I like to call it. As for exercise I walk for now and plan to ride my bike and do some workouts with an exercise ball I've had sitting in a box in my closet for 15 yrs. LOL. One thing is that I haven't had any carbs or sugar for over two months my body has gone through a detox if you will. I feel this has given me a lot more energy and plan to stay away from carbs and sugar once I start to eat solid foods. Even though I love chocolate.:P

Yay! Definitely stay away from sugar AND artificial sweeteners. Otherwise you will quickly reawaken the sweet tooth monster!

I know...and what a struggle. However it gets a bit better with time. But I still would love to have a good chocolate bar like a Hershey's. LOL

  19. You can absolutely have dumping with VSG. In fact you can have dumping without any WLS at all. Are RNY more prone, sure. But saying it isn't a potential problem is just incorrect. Terri, you say you want to lose 120 lbs. VSG reports 50-60 (some 70)% loss of your total overage. RNY is upwards of 80%. Yes there are more potential complications with VSG over RNY. As someone that was banded 5 and a half years ago. I wish I would have went RNY off the bat. The band had all these amazing results reported. But the truth didn't follow the marketing. Sure, I lost 60ish lbs total already. But I'm stuck at around 300-315 lbs. Have been for 4 of the 5 years I've had the band. I'm currently in the progress of revising to RNY. Look at all your factors, how much you have to lose, etc. Understand that restriction alone will ONLY get you so far. That's why the RNY has a greater long term success rate, because of the malabsorption. I figure, I'm almost 40, over 300 lbs. If I don't do something to drop 100+ lbs now, I might not see 50.
  20. Statistically, less complications with VSG vs RNY. Gerd is the biggest concern for VSG and can lead to needing a revision. RNY has the malabsorption aspect as well as other possible risks. I am not against either, I chose VSG because imo it was best for ME. If I need to revise in the future (a percentage of wls patients end up with a revision) than so be it! Even RNY patients get revised sometimes, so there really is no right or wrong, just pick best for you & health. My mother had RNY 10 almost 11 years ago & is doing well!

    Regret

It's complicated, I guess. I'm four weeks out, and I don't feel regret about the operation - I'm sure it'll add years to my life - but I often miss being able to eat "normally". Like, leftover pizza slice in the fridge, I look at it, and I wish I could have it. When eating with friends, they've got plates full of food, and I've got like... an eighth to a quarter. This stuff eases up over time, I know, but the thought that I'll never be able to eat a whole sandwich again makes me a bit sad.
  22. This is exactly why I'm hesitant to tell my mother. If she does not support the decision it will really complicate things. Ultimately, we have to do what is right for us!
  23. I like that idea @Newme17. My first goal was to just get through the surgery without major complications. Check! 2nd goal was to stop my diabetes meds. I am not ready to check that one off yet. I want to see what happens when I start eating solid food with a few more carbs. So for right now that is still my goal and also to get out of the 200's.

Cheating on pre op liquid diet

That pre-op liquid diet is a killer. It is very very tough, both physically and emotionally. Headaches, hunger, crankiness, crying. Your body will adapt in a few days. and I promise that you won't feel like this once you are post-op. This is just the painful kick start to your journey. Staying positive is really important. Drink a lot of water to flush the toxins out, and have a lot of broth so that you feel like you sat down to a meal. Please follow your surgeon's instructions. My surgeon told me after my surgery that he could tell I followed instructions and that his job is so much easier when patients follow the pre-op instructions. (and making our surgeon's job easier means less risks and complications for us). Please think of it this way... these are pre-operative instructions from your surgeon and must be followed to the letter to reduce your risk of complications and improve your surgical outcome. It is not the same as cheating on a diet or ignoring your nutritionist's advice, which will just slow your weight loss. Hang in there. it won't always be this hard

    Regret

I am 1 month out today and still having regrets. I live with a constant stomach ache and low energy even though I am eating and taking my supplements. I had complications in the hospital which kept me in for another week. I made this decision for my health, but I feel worse now than before I had this done.
