@@Isabela Macedo It will depend if you're on an employer health plan or private. If it's just private, see the link I posted earlier in this thread for the policy. If it's through your employer, you will have to meet their guidelines as well. I had my surgery 11/19/14 and the process was fairly easy. I met all my surgeons requirements and got approval on first letter. I was paying a ton in private insurance premiums but just counting out of pocket medical expense, my entire surgery including all the test cost $1500. Your surgeon may have their own diet plan you are required to follow.
  2. Penny I am sure that if you get there at 10:45, Ernesto will wait for you -- you may not need to check your luggage as you don't need that much while you are in Mexico so if you have carryon only, your departure will be even quicker. Once your date is scheduled, Nina will send you several emails with what you will need to bring, buy, etc., etc. - if you have any questions after that, you can ask her or us ... several of us have had our surgery in Mexicali!

    Which Band Is Better?

My doctor said the size of a band sometimes has to do with the size of a person's stomach. He may lean more towards one than the other, but may not have a choice based on the size of someone's stomach. He also said he prefers the low pressure bands as opposed to the high pressure band. the high pressure ones have more of a chance of leaking. I have a 10 cc low pressure band. I think it depends on what the doctor likes, what he's had success with and your anatomy.

    Is Mexico?

Dear Mom I went to Mexico in 2006 and got a lapband with Dr. Arturo Rodriguez in Monterrey, Mexico for $8,000. Things went South on me in a hurry. I came down with puemonia and couldn't get out of bed the day after the operation. I had to pay another $1,600 to stay 2 extra days. My wife was with me and she got me to the airport and to the emergency room when we landed in Houston. I was in bad shape. The band never worked. After I started to tighten it up there was never any restriction. To make a long story short I wound up back in Monterrey in about 10 months and I had to pay out another $2,500 to be debanded. Loss of work, transportation, hospitals, fills, etc. I spent about $20,000 and didn't loose any weight and have no lapband to show for it. A lot of people seem to have a wonderful experience with Mexico. I'd urge anybody to stop and consider what it'll cost if you have complications like me. I'm sure that I would have had some financial recourse if it had happened in the USA. One last thing I found out too late is that you can get fills here for a Mexican band, but no Doctor will touch you if you have complications. It's back to Mexico you go. Good Luck with your decision

    Liquid Diet Woes

Thanks Heather, I think I know all of this, but I stumble when it comes to social eating. I never realized how much food I am offered at work until I started all of this. I calculated it one day and think the if I ate "right" every where else, I'd still gain 10 pounds a year from eating everything offered. Yeah, a year from now, this will be an amusing story to tell other Bandsters. I'll do some Zen meditation and see if the future me will give me a pat on the head and tell me to quiet down. :biggrin2:

I just jumped through 2 more hoops!

It's all about calories in and activity out. If you count the calories or use the band to restrict your intake it is the same as far as the basics are concerned. IMO, if you have no idea about what are calorie dense foods you can eat a small amount and not lose weight. I am glad I know how to count calories as I feel it helps me make good choices and my band keeps my portions in control. I found that getting all artificial sugar out of my diet helped me a lot so I don't indulge but I think each of us needs to be sure for outselves. My insurance clearly stated that the detemination for surgery would be made on my pre-supervised-diet weight. If I did not show a signifigant weight loss (for my insurance 5-10% of body weight) they would not have approved me. Check with your insurance and see if your deal is the same. Good luck!
  8. I have my CPAP study scheduled for next Tuesday evening. I don't have to have the "initial" Sleep Study because I had one 2 yrs ago and insurance accepted it. The Sleep Lab just called me and told me my score is not high enough. Mine was at a 3 out of 24. Insurance only covers it if its a 10 or more. So the sleep lab changed all my numbers. She seemed surprised that I don't fall asleep doing little things, however I would not sleep at night if it weren't for Ambien. I just don't understand why they are making me lie about this. I don't feel comfortable doing it at all. I was borderline on sleep study until my roomate told them that he can hear me snore from down the hall and my neck is big. Hello.. I'm big. I'm hoping to have my surgery in June. Just feel like a trained circuis animal jumping thru the hoops to get this done.
  9. I have my surgery today at noon... Have to be at the hospital by 10...
  10. Good for you. Scale moved. Great for you !!!!! The trainers can be hugely expensive. I'm sure there are some great ones out there.....but I've run across a few quacks, too. There are a number of gyms in the area running $10 / month rates. Hard to beat them....and a couple are open 24hrs, too. I highly recommend using the machines as they have the correct range of motion built in, provided you adjust the seat positions properly for your height/reach. I would set up a schedule that allows you to concentrate on one major body area per session. Alternate them to allow for 3 or more days of resting that part in between sessions. Begin by using weights that allow you to do 15+ reps and keep it to 4 sets. You want to work your way up over a few months to allow the connective tendons and tissues to strengthen. Some folks think they can just jump in and gauge everything based on muscle soreness. I had to learn the hard way that tendons and ligaments are the restricting factor and need to be coaxed over time before getting too crazy with it. You can can get a great workout with the machines. I assure you. I know it's not possible to really target where the fat loss occurs......but, I swear it sure feels that way. The most lean parts of my jiggly body are the parts where I've had progress developing those muscles. It really does feel like it.
  11. @@Dub I am a member of a gym through school, so I am covered in that area. I have been doing 10, 5 set reps on an arm machine (I cannot remember which one) to work on arms and chest. I want to add more machines, so I thank you for your advise

Hi all my fellow sleevers I am pre op getting ready about three weeks to go. It has been a long six months getting ready. I am 5,11 262lbs all of it around my waist so I get asked at least once a week when I am due. I often tell them I have no uterus and am 51 years old but thank you for thinking I am still in my child bearing years. I used to try to be polite smile and make up a date so they were not embarrassed for asking. I have done tons of research and feel very confident about my choice. Just worried about having the time to really take care of myself after I work six days a week at a very very very stressful job Anyway thats a little about me really love the forum here and lots of great advice and support.
  13. I can't believe it is finally here after 10 months of hard work. I am excited and nervous - not nervous about the surgery itself, nervous they will change their mind tomorrow LOL, silly worries on my part:redface:. I just wanted to share with all of you and I will be back for my post op support!:cursing:

    Pre-op Optifast Help!

I have my surgery scheduled on May 21, 2009. And my Dr. gave me a list of 'rules' for the pre-op... 1. One Metaucil Capsule can be takedn at 10:00 am and one at 3:00 pm for hunger pangs 2. A green salad (no colors other than GREEN!) may be consumed, unlimited. Broccoli, bell paper, cucumber, celery, jicama, asparagus, minimal tomato & mushroom and salad spritzer, up to 5 calories. 3. One chromium Piclinate 400mcg per day can be taken for fat-burning purposes. I am only required to do a ONE week pre-op diet. But you may want to ask your Dr or Nutritionist if these tips are applicable for you! Good Luck!!!
  15. OMG ( gosh ) you get your band and you show your husband -- it is not easy - but you can do it- the first week I wanted to tear the band out -- ha ha - glad I did not do it -- you get used to not drinking while eating--- takes a few weeks but you will adjust -- the best thing, to me, about the band is that I feel like I will not regain the weight I slowly lose -- you know you lose 10 and feel good and then gain it back - plus a few lbs - I have to repeat this is not easy but I love it - I still need to get used to not ordering too much food - I bring a lot home in boxes and either eat it at another time or treat my cat and dog --- my children are not home anymore and my husband usually does not like what I order -- YOU CAN DO IT
  16. Before I made my choice, I called at 10-12 lapband offices / centers and each had different options from a couple of hours stay at a surgical center, to an overnight stay in the hospital. I had an overnight stay at a hospital - glad to have had the overnight option; however, I could see how I could easily have gone home in a few hours and rested very well for several days. Best of Luck!

    Extra skin?

Mpope There are many factors that go into the whole saggy skin - Your age - how long you have been over weight - DNA (this is the biggest factor) Think of a garbage bag put in a ten pound weight - leave it there for a short time then take it out - the bag goes back into shape Now take 80 lbs and leave the weights in the garbage back for a few years - take it out the bag will not go back into shape. Exercise works your muscles not your skin - building more muscle fills the space where the fat was and your skin - but it's not going to firm your skin, What's more important - saggy skin - or your health?? Saggy skin is not going to kill you but that fat will - put it into perspective.. I have grandma boobs (I am a Grandma :scared2:) but with proper bra they look good - I have a little flap on my tummy nothing spanxs doesn't take care of. My arms - will that's another story - but I just don't go sleeveless. Heck we don't live in Eden where we would be walking around naked - (thanks Eve :blushing:) We walk around clothed - so most of the flabby skin is covered up.. I feel 10 yrs younger - Look 100% better - and God willing have extended my life span - and this was the whole purpose of my getting the band. The better looks is secondary to me. There are always plastic surgeons - but insurance will not cover them unless it's medically necessary - (rashes under your apron if you have one) So the real question should be - What's Important to you... Your health or a little flabby skin??
  18. Hi Jahni, I was sleeved on March 22 @ 200 lbs, I have only lost 10 lbs. I would love to have you as a buddy and do this together. My goal weight is 145lbs. I have yet to incorporate any form of exercise yet, which could be the reason for not losing.

    Surgery Next Week or September?!

As someone who had my sleeve done last summer, June 10, I would actually tell you to wait. While I usually believe you should just do it because you will be sad you waited, traveling was a HUGE PAIN last summer for me! I traveled at 4 weeks out and 8 weeks out and was miserable both times (nauseous and dehydrated, plus it was hard to find things to eat). It's not like you are waiting because you want to be able to eat more, I just think those first few weeks are tough enough without throwing in traveling. I have lost about 120 pounds since last June- the weight will come off and then you can get to traveling and living life to the fullest next summer! I leave for Cancun in a week and am so excited!

    eating like crazy. HELP!!!

Not till I was put on the 2 week liquid diet did I realize what HUNGER really is! LOL.... And as many have said here, you have to make the band work for you, its a tool, its not gonna just help you lose weight on its own. Think of it like this, the lap band is like 10% of helping you lose weight, the other 90% is where you come in, Mentally. Make it work for you. Notice what you're eating, what time, and why you're eating and ask yourself, I'm I really hungry or just want to eat to satisfy myself? Trust me, I know its NOT easy. We all been here, I know I'm still learning and growing but just take it one step at a time. Best, Chris

    Soooo Close!

I am still sitting at 10 pounds away from my goal. The goal was kind of arbitrary on my part. I may stop when I lose another 5. I haven't lost any for a month - with the holidays, a 3 day trip to a family funeral out of state, and now a really bad cold/respiratory infection - I haven't been my most diligent. My goal is really the same as you. I want to wear 10/12's and medium tops. I am 5'4" and that bone size test said I had small bones. My bone structure isn't really small - like some members of the family - but it is on the smallish side I guess. I am broad shouldered, not very buxom (a C cup) am pretty straight up and down from the waist to the hips, and have a flat butt. I said I wanted to weigh 135 dressed on the doctor's scale - right now I would weigh right around 145 on his scale. If I don't lose any more before my annual date (2/22) and I have been diligent with my food and exercising six days a week, I may come to the conclusion I need to stop where I am. I know I would lose the 5-10 pounds I want to lose if I could get rid of the excess skin around my waist, belly and bat-wings. Are you considering plastic surgery at all?
  24. I'm 3.5 weeks out from being banded. Over the last week I've experienced extreme nausea and a lot of dry heaves. I saw my Dr. on Tuesday and she prescribed phenergan but otherwise wasn't too concerned. She also keeps chalking up my ailments to "nerves" which is partially true but not entirely. I just constantly feel like I'm going to vomit and I dry heave occasionally for 5-10 minutes at a time. I thought it was an antibiotic I was taking but I haven't had that for 2 days and I'm still sick. Has anyone else had this happen? Did it pass? I can't stand having to live like this!

    Lapband to sleeve

I had lapband in 2005. Had it removed in 2009. Sleeved 4/10/18. My immediate post-op experience after being sleeved was rough. Surgeon said I had a lot of scar tissue from the lapband, which took him almost twice as long as a normal sleeve to take care of. That means I was under anesthesia longer than usual, so I was REALLY groggy for about 12 hours after surgery. I had no energy to get up and walk like the others on my hospital unit. I had no desire to sip-sip-sip and I think I looked a bit like I'd been hit by a truck. I certainly felt that way. Once I got through the immediate post op part, I returned to normal pretty quickly. Other than some fatigue, I was feeling back to normal after about 6 days. I went through the normal progression from clear liquids to full liquids to mushies to soft, etc. When comparing the two, I'd say that the sleeve has a lot more restriction. After a certain amount, I simply cannot eat. If I do, I suffer with discomfort and a lot of foam/saliva/slime. I was never able to tolerate fills in my band, so this was something relatively new to me. If you have any sort of GERD, I caution. The sleeve tends to make GERD worse. I'd say it's a little hit or miss in that department, but it's certainly something to discuss with your surgeon. I started getting heartburn about 3 weeks out and I've had some times where I was really worried about nighttime reflux, but I seem to have it under control right now. As a revision surgery, it is likely you will lose slower this time around. I read it on here and I read other information on the internet, but was still disappointed at the slow weight loss. I'm certainly happy it's coming off, but it is much slower than first timers.
