  1. I am very concerned. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks out from my bypass surgery. I have only lost 11 pounds since my surgery. I had a week long hospital stay and gained 6 pounds in the hospital, and I've lost that too. I am getting bummed out and am wondering how this is even possible that I'm not losing weight while eating right around 500 calories or less and drinking tons of Water. Anyone had this happen? And what did you do? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. You are doing AWESOME with your Water and PROTEIN!!! The swelling may be caused by your surgery. After my RNY I felt like I had lost a lot of weight but when I was weighed I hadn't lost a single #. You are 12 days out so you should see the swelling going down. Also I know this might sound funny but I have been told to up my water when I was swollen. It is supposed to push the swelling out. Again you are doing great. KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!
  3. I don't think that gaining is a good idea. However, I understand that insurance hoops are holding you back. If I were you, I would wear pants with big pockets and figure out a way to shove paper weights in all places possible--even your bra. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. Good luck to you.
  4. When I started this process I was 267 and I am 5"6 that was about 2 months ago. I am now at 242 I thought I would get a jump on the weight loss but now I am under 40 Bmi and Healthnet HMO will only approve Bmi 40 or over with no comorbiodities or 39 and under with 2 co morbidities. I have no comorbidities.I just got the call from the doctor for my group meeting tommorow and my appt with the surgeon on July 21st. Thank goodness I asked what happens if I lose more weight before I get with the surgeon on July 21st she said more than likely they would not approve me. I am really bummed that I have to stop losing weight on my own and I might have to put on 3-5 lbs to be at a 40 BMI. Has anyone heard of this? or gone through this, it just seems that this is a little a**backwards to me!!:confused2::thumbup:
  5. Yes, I had to MAKE SURE I didn't loose any weight before they approved me. I had a BMI of 39.5 which tricare went ahead and approved because it was so close to 40, and I have no comorbities. I have heard of several people who actually had to regain weight before approval. Don't worry, after approval, you can loose as much as you want, and they will still do surgery.
  6. I found out today that the military hospital in South Korea doesn't do lap-band only bypass. :crying: I am disappointed but not devastated. I'm going to keep trying on my own to loose the weight while we are here and if nothing happens get it when we move again. So hopefully I'll either by slimmer or joining you all in two years.
  7. Ok, so I'm 2 1/2 yrs post op. I've lost 104 lbs. Almost to goal. Almost. About 5 mths ago, I started having really bad nite reflux. So bad I was consuming a handful of rx pills + OTC pills every nite all the while sitting up to sleep. And I was still coughing up stomach acid all nite. I emailed the nurse at my drs office and she told me it sounded like a slip. I was afraid of going in for fear they'd take out my band and I'd gain all my weight back. But my husband made me go. They did the xray and indeed, it was a slip. They took out about 1/2 of my 10cc fill (in a 14cc band) and let me go for 3 weeks to refill again. He said he would put all of it back in there if the slip had fixed itself. Thank God. When I went in last week, I found that I gained 5 lbs. I'm eating like a moose. And the dr actually saw me, not his PA that took my fill out and promised me he'd fill it back up again. And he said no, that he would only do 1cc at a time. It hasn't been working. So I called the drs office yesterday to see when I could come in for another (6 hrs round trip/ $160 per fill). I was told 4-6 weeks! Wow. My clothes won't fit me by then. I emailed the nurse yesterday and told her of my crisis (which she understand, having gone thru it herself) and she got me in next week! After only 2 weeks between fills. I'm going to CA for 2 weeks on the 1st and wanted it before then. I'm kinda hoping to see the PA that unfilled me so that I can get more (he's more aggresive than the MD) than 1cc put in. I tolerated 10cc before. And I've gained another 3 lbs. To those who have been unfilled then filled again: Does it take just as long to get the right adjustment as it took the first time? It took 5 mths to get the right amt in there for me to lose. I hope it doesn't take that long this time. Does it mean that I will be good at 10cc again, or do the amts differ since I had a slip? Just needed to get that off my chest. I now officially have 18 lbs to goal. And I've given all my jumbo clothes away so I absolutely can't afford to gain anymore. I hope I get filled to the brim next week! Marci

    Newbie

Hi all, I am new to this forum. I am newly banded as of 9/30/03. I have to say that my first 1 1/2 to 2 weeks I wasnt sure I did a good thing. I was miserable. Nausea, severe gas pains, and man was I STARVING! But now 4 weeks out I have to say it is great. When people told me at 1 week out that I would feel that way in 4wks, I thought they were full of crap. I thought I would never feel good again, physically and mentally. But, I do feel great now. I am down from234.5 start weight to 212 at 4 weeks. Cant beat that any where. At 5'2 that makes a huge difference in how I feel. Now the next journey is THE FILL. It does scare me to think about. I was a bit traumatized by the Physically starving thing the first 2 wks. Now that I can eat, in moderation, I dont want to risk not being able to with a fill. I know thats a pretty dumb way of thinking. I know that proper fills are part of this thing, and I will when the time comes, have a fill, but I'm still a little scared. I look forward to hearing from others whom are newly banded. Beth/michigan

    I'm a newbie

Congrats and good luck. I have to be honest and say that I was pretty prepared for all of it. I did a TON of research before my surgery. The biggest thing I noticed a lot of people don't necessarily realize is that the weight doesn't just "come off", you need to work at it. That means follow an appropriate diet and EXERCISE! So many people seem surprised to find out they actually have to exercise to get the weight off. . I suppose I would have also like to get a better understanding of what people's reactions would be to my weight loss and the surgery. (I tend to get frustrated by those who think this process was easy.) I thought I could keep the surgery to myself but losing 100 pounds in a year is pretty obvious. I would have like to have been better prepared for the reactions I would get. All in all, it's been an incredible experience and I know I made the right choice for me as I feel great. Best of luck to you!
  10. I just had an attack a few nights ago where my heart was beating very rapidly, I had bad shortness of breath which caused me dizziness, and my arms especially the right were heavy and tingling. It really scared me but I took a valium (from my mother. i am not on meds currently) with a huge bottle of Water, laid down and felt better within 30-45 minutes. This was the worst attack I have ever had. I thought I was possibly having a heart attack ! I haven't disscussed this issue with my surgeon yet so, I wanted to ask if anyone had relief of this condition after weightloss? Or does this have anything to do with weight whatsoever? I just hate it and wish I could never have an attack again. Its ruining my life. If I even think about a stressful situation, I have to hurry and get my mind off of it quickly before I start getting that panic type feeling, it sucks. Surgery scheduled for March 2017
  11. christleouchley 3 months.......... you've lost 40 lbs - woooo hoooo you are doing terrific!!!!! never, ever, ever, ever compare your weight loss to someone elses the common thread between all of us - is that we're all different all our bodies are different (even if you are a "busy" body LOL) we all need/should be conscious of what we eat - calories, Protein, carbs et al that one friend of yours stops before she if full - but what about the calories she took in??? she/we need to be aware of how much we're taking in exaggeration - maybe she ate 4 slices of cherry pie and knew to stop-- but boy did she eat alot of calories!!! tracking or not????????? tracking does make yourself more aware of what you are eating daily protein, carbs, sugars - Water intake hanging head low - i don't track as often as i should so this is a case of - do as i say, not as i do!!!! as Don commented regarding his protein (post #2) he thought he was getting it all in, but after checking later, he realized he wasn't always successful (but he got back on the horse like i knew he would ) don't be concerned with your friends' weight, how long it took them to lose this is all about YOU!!!!! You are doing great!!!! keep up the good work kathy

    Help! Suggestions please

Well, you can still do all the upper body exercises you want! I will have to have a knee replacement (MRI last week) but am going to hold off as long as possible with cortisone shots every few months. And I LOVE to work out at the YMCA--so I've adjusted my routine around my knee. For your lower body: You may be able to do the leg extensions, allowing your other knee to take up the slack, but the leg curl and leg press will be out of the question for you. You should still be able to do the inner/outer thigh machine and the calf raises (on a seated machine) without too much difficulty--but no squats whatsoever! For aerobic exercise, you may be able to use the recumbent (seated) bike -- or a rowing machine, but I think the eliptical bike and the treadmill are probably out for you. Don't give up, though--exercise the very best thing for you, regardless of what it is you're able to do! It just makes you feel great! P.S. I will say, though, that I was not able to go back to Curves for five weeks post-op and the YMCA was seven weeks post op, with adjusting my weights downward for a few weeks after that. It's too soon for you to begin lifting anything heavy--so just be patient!
  13. Is your band giving you any feedback at all? IMO. the secret to success is learning how to "Listen" to myour band...but, if your band is not saying anything, you may need an adjustemt untill it does... In my story, my first fill was 4cc's, and I did not tell any diffrence...as a matter of fact I gained weight after my first fill and before my 2nd... My 2nd fill was 2cc's...a little better...strated to get it and started to learn how to deal with it...it was then that the rules started tp apply... It took me one more fill after that to put me in that special place...but it was not easy at forst..I really had to manage myself, change many bad habits, change many food choices, and above all adhere to the rules very strictly if I was to suvive, or have to get a un-fill.... I survived, and it has been the easiest thing to do to loose weight...that was 2 years ago, and it has been a simple way of life ever since....don't even think about it all that much...it just is...simple. I no longer worry or think about loosing weight...no more diets, just a day to day way of life... That's the Green Zone....getting there is the struggle...not staying there....
  14. Hi was just wondering how much do people loss weekly after a gastric sleeve??? Sent from my SM-G930F using the BariatricPal App
  15. Hi nursehr80!! I'm 3 days post op. starting weight 301, today's weight 290. I noticed that I was extremely fatigued the first two days I came home. All I did was sleep. Idk if it was from the pain meds or what but I couldn't do anything. Just like you, walking around my home, showering and just sitting up right were challenging for me. I couldn't take in much fluids because the gas was so bad, but I have noticed that as the gas subsided I'm able to tolerate more fluids. I was drinking too fast at first and giving myself awful pains. It truly is tricky to learn how to gauge my fluid intake and what I can tolerate and what I can't tolerate. This journey is truly much different from what I was told. No amount of preparation prepared me for this actual experience.

Protein is the secret to weight loss for sure......If you are losing slowly and want to speed the process up...Then drop a couple of snacks.....How ever seems to me that you are doing fine........Keep up the good work!
  17. I understand how ur feeling I'm 3 weeks post op and I'm down 13lbs. At first I started getting down about it then i thought to myself this is a journey not a race. I have to embrace the good times and the bad. No other fad diet has provided this 8 or 13lbs of weight loss for me and left me feeling so great. Have I lost in large numbers?? Yes I have on Adkins diet but I didn't feel great like I do now my hair was was dry and brittle and with my critical carb count being so low on Adkins I had very little energy to work out. Trust me follow ur program work ur sleeve/tool get ur exercise in even just walking and the weight WILL come off. Hang in there u r actually doing fantastic.
  18. don't worry. Your body is still recovering from surgery. Some people recover more slowly than others. Once the healing has truly begun...you will see more weight loss. Make sure you are eating your Protein and drinking your Water and you are walking every day. If you do all those things the weight will come off. Good luck and be patient.

    Losing weight too fast?

@@keljo44 I'm hoping you meant to say after losing 80lbs you now weigh 225lbs that would mean your starting weight was 305 the higher weight you start at, the more you will initially lose losing 80 lbs in 9 weeks does sound like a lot in a short time but, nothing surprises me after a few weeks people's weight loss usually slows down good luck kathy

    Newbie question...

Okay, I think I can answer this one! The band is adjusted to allow an individual to lose 1-2 lbs per week until goal. I believe at that point, some of the restriction is taken out, therefore, letting you maintain but not gain. But, once a bandster, always a bandster and the bandster rules and eating changes made with the band have to be adhered to regardless of the fill level. HTH Jacky

    Weight loss goals

Okay, just trying to keep it real here. Statistics do show that the weight loss with the sleeve is slightly less than RNY, that makes it about 85%-87% of the total weight needed to be lost. That doesn't mean that we won't hit our desired goal. It just means that last little bit might be a bit tougher than than it would be just through the surgery alone and you might have to work a bit harder to hit that goal. NOW, the Dr. shouldn't have brought that up, but if you research it that's what you'll find. My surgeon even said that in our orientation session. We see people on this board all the time that has loss 100+ on the sleeve. It seems to me, just by what I follow here is that more than 100 lbs with the sleeve is a tougher, but it is certainly doable. Just just have to work at it. Don't let the knock you off your game, hang tough

    Body image issue

I think that this is why it takes so many different steps in pre-op. They try and make sure that when we are deciding to have surgery that we are fully aware that it is just a tool to help loose weight. Though the weight comes off it doesn't get to the core of why and how we got to the point we were at when we made the decision to have surgery. This is why they tell us to go to support group meetings and if necessary find a therapist. I know that I am working on it. I just decided that I was going to leave the scale and the numbers on the scale to the doc for now and work on appreciating the changes through how clothes fit and the way my body feels. I like the suggestion that Abby gave. It is something that I had done a long time ago and helped. I stopped doing it and think that it is something I am going to start doing again.... Thanks for the reminder!!

    Brain not Working

We were required to drink 100% pure juice mixed 50/50 with Water (either 32 or 64 ounces a day, can't remember now!!). If I skipped my juice, my brain died....I had to have that bit of sugar consistently throughout the day or I just couldn't think. HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 198

    one month post op =(

    1) It is totally normal to not lose/or gain weight before you have a fill! It's called "bandster hell" DON"T beat yourself up for it 2) I don't want to be dissing your surgeon or anything but I think if there is another surgeon in that practice you should see someone else. If he makes you feel uncomfortable you'll never wanna walk back in there again- which is very bad for your bands health!
