    whats happened to me

Have you had any fills? The band is a tool to help you lose weight. Like the gastric bypass you can stretch the pouch is you overeat. You are the first that I have heard that the band isn't working. May be it is a defective band? I was just banded August 29th and I have no fill until October and I know that the band is here..believe me. I didn't chew something so well the other day and felt it big time. The band 's purpose is to cause you to feel full on smaller portions longer. NOt only will you have to change your eating habits, you also have to exercise too. Have you changed your diet? Do you exercise? What has your doctor said about this because it does not sound right to me. You should have lost something on th liquid phase alone. Did you do the liquid phase and follow all the instuctions post-op? Some people lose during the 4-6 weeks post op because of the food restrictions. what was your diet like after surgery? I really would like to know the answers to these questions because you have piqued my curiostiy. You are the first I have encountered where the band did not restrict. Thank you for posting. Dee Dee

    Cycling Nutrition question

This sounds like a question for Chef Woody. Chef Woody was a restaurant chef who underwent RNY gastric bypass surgery. He then incorporated his knowledge of WLS into specific recipes. After surgery he became an avid bicycle enthusiast. He worked is way up in competitions and rode non-stop from one side of Indiana to the other. He said when he reached the other side of the state, he was totally out of energy and collapsed. I suspect he would know the answer. He probably told it to me but I forgot. He moved away and now lives in Florida. Here is a link to what I believe is his website. http://www.chefwoody.com

    Frustrated!!! Argh!

You made the right decision. I am ready for restriction too. Bypass has way to many complications that could occur. Hang in there!

    Gasrtric Bypass after Gastric Banding???

Lee, Yes there are people who have moved on to gastric bypass surgery. Just a caution, weight loss is a journey and is not a quick fix. I also know lots of people who have had the bypass to only be back to where they were in the beginning. This process whether lap band, sleeve or bypass is about learning discipline, good habits and changing behavior. i realize that may not be a popular response on this site but it is true. We did not get fat over night and we are not going to get skinny over night. If you do decide to have the bypass surgery do it becasue it is the right thing for your health, not becasue you want to lose weight faster. Ok said my peace, I will shut up now. You can be successful, you can lose with the band, give yourself time before you rush into somehing else. Best of luck!
  6. I saw Al Roker on another T.V. show (Not The Today show )He admitted to a weight gain of 20 pounds and he was working out with Oprah's personal trainer.....But I saw him this AM on the Today Show in a wet suit and bless his heart he looks like is struggling with more tha a 20 pound gain :-( I also noticed as he was walking he has a much more pronounced limp again. He had a hip replacement about 5 yrs ago and the extra weight is putting a real strain on that new hip ! It just proves that the Gastric Bypass is not sure proof either. I have a friend who is going to Jenny Craig again after having the G.B. and losing 120 lbs she kept it off for 4 yrs and it just started creeping back on as she was able to return to her old eating habits. She has gained about 80 lbs back and is very depressed ! She is NOW asking her surgeon for the Lap Band but he says it is not possible. Just my 2 cents, Joanne
  7. I also suspect that maybe Star Jones has a lapband since she was so insistent that she never had gastric bypass. Just a thought... Janice

    CIGNA - supervised diet requirement

Cigna here also. 4 months from start to surgery. September kicked things off with the Bariatric program information session and scheduled my first nutritionist appointment the same week. I did the same thing and checked with Cigna on the requirements. Cigna said I could do 3 months supervised diet with a nutritionist and they gave me some names of those in their network. I had to do at least one nutritionist visit with the Bariatric surgeons office, but it was not close to my home. So I picked a nutritionist close by to meet with me 4 times (September, October, November, and December), and she documented my diet, exercise and weight. In parallel, my surgeon let me do all the pre-op appointments and tests. So timing wise, it worked out well and i had my nutritionist send my 3-month supervised diet chart notes to the surgeon immediately after my 4th appointment. By that time, I completed all the other Cigna and surgeons prerequisites and just needed the last piece from the nutritionist. Paperwork submitted week before Christmas, and approved in one week!!!! Then was able to schedule surgery mid-January. I will say it was a very very busy time, particularly because I also had to get appointments and clearances from 4 other specialists. So right away I started scheduling those. In the end, the 3 months worked out to be just the right amount of time to fit everything in ( oh and work full time and have a family, etc). So knowing your insurance requirements up front is the best thing to do!!! Best of luck!!

    Pros and Cons

OK lemme think on that..... Pro's are easy ---- weight loss, more energy, clothes are fun again, "eat to live instead of live to eat" mentality is great Cons....well it was really hard at first - had to focus to learn to chew chew chew and eat the rights foods that wouldn't get stuck....I find it annoying when people would say "well you had surgery ___ months ago, why haven't you lost more?" as folks think the lapband is like the gastric bypass and you should get skinny in no time....but really, other than the occassional day that I feel ultra tight (which happens due to high humidity, female hormones, being dehydrated...) and I cannot manage to eat much, most of the time everything is great now, as I don't have to focus so much on chewing, etc. It IS different for everyone, though.....no two people are exactly alike....so you have to choose what is best for you. You will need to be diligent in eating the right foods, exercising, and getting your fills in order for it to work for you. Good luck! Kim

    Pre-op blues and doubts

Hi Tracy I just started my pre op today. I'm scheduled for November 4th. I totally understand how you feel. Since yesterday I have been having second thoughts. I am trying to remember all the reasons why I started this journey to help me through this stage. Which stinks by the way!!!????

    Hello ...... 36.6 BMI

Dave once you get to the correct fill level after a band, then you are supposed to be satisfied or full with about 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food. This is how you are able to lose weight, but you have to follow the rules. The band is made to be a lifetime implant, and many have had them for a long time, but sometimes there are complications where they have to be removed, that percentage is pretty small though. On the excess skin issue everyone is different, it depends on your age and the elasticity of your skin, one advantage to the band is you lose slowly and this allows your skin to retract better than very very rapid weight loss such as you have with a bypass surgery. I believe I remember reading that about 20% of band weight loss paitients need a plastic surgery after they are at their goal weight. Hope this helps. Debbie

    Salad - 4 months out

Your body cannot digest the leafy greens like it use to..and besides, unless you're adding a ton of chicken to your salad, you're not getting the Protein that you need anyway. Salad for bypass patients is a waste of time and energy...Once you're over a year out you can "stomach" it a bit better...but even then it can get stuck and cause you issues. Best of luck! Surgery went well!

Congratulations. I had a RNY Gastric Bypass 11 months ago, and I remember the first few weeks were rough. There was so much complexity built into the meal plan, Protein supplements, medicine, Vitamins, Water intake, etc. But it does get better. I reached my happy state at 6 months, when everything started to work and all the problems melted away.
  16. Hello all my name is heather and i am from Dallas TX. I joined because i am meeting with a Dr. in a couple days about getting the Lap Band. I am 5'6 310 with a BMI of 48. I meet the requirements to get the band with my insurance as long as i do a DR. directed diet plan, my insurance is aetna EPO. I have alot of worries with getting this surgry but my first one is with my insureance. this is the 1st time in over five years i've even had health insurance. I do not have a PCP and I have not gone to the doctor in at least 5 years with one exception. (emergency tooth surgery) i"m worried that even with my weight having been very high all my life i have no recent documation to prove it. Has any one had the surgy that has my similar problem? Any adivce from any one who has aetna would be great. I've read alot about both gastric bypass, which my mom and sister had with little complications, and the Lap Band, which my boyfriends father had with few complications. I have decided on the Lap band for many reasons man one being i'm less likey to die from it. Another is i want it help me loose weight not make me dump all my wieght in less than a year like my mom and sister did with the bypass. I was wondering though, since u loose so much slower how much do you loose in say a month? I know its differnt person to person i just want to get a general idea. Well i'll go read threw some threads see if i can get answers to the rest of my questions that way, thanks for anyone who reads this time. :tongue_smilie: Sincerly hopeful and worried Ps. please excuse my spelling
  17. My file is complete per my surgeon’s admin. I’m going to start the CPAP tonight or tomorrow night. The admin will call Monday to set up my ‘Results’ appointment with the surgeon, and my paperwork will go to CIGNA on Monday. Now I wait. I’m so tempted to book a date in May and only give myself 5 days till I’m back at school. HOWEVER, I will most likely choose to do the more prudent thing, and have surgery June 9th or 10th-ish when school is out. Yes, I am enjoying a food bucket list until I start the pre-op diet. My BMI is 40.9 and I’m hell bent on keeping it there till Cigna says yes. I’d love to hear from the April Surgery Buddies regarding your immediate post-op recovery. I guess that this week (fingers crossed) I will be able to join the June Surgery Buddies Group. FWIW, I began this journey on 1/15 with research into WLS. My zoom call with the surgeon’s office was 2/22. The pre-procedure testing (extensive) began in March. I started out thinking sleeve, but I have opted for bypass. I have a large hiatal hernia that will be repaired during surgery.
  18. I had gastric bypass Jan 18. My highest weight was 235. My day of surgery I weighed 192. My current weight today is 136. Boy has it been a journey of ups and downs but well worth it. I will however be getting plastics in the near future. I went from a 38 DDD to a b cup full of skin YUCK!
  19. After RNY gastric bypass surgery, your stomach will no longer process fats and sugars. That can mean the fats and sugars in milk. I became lactose intolerant after surgery. Anytime I drank milk, it immediately led to an upset stomach and a trip to the bathroom. Some of the Protein shakes also contain lactose. This lactose intolerance condition went away after about two months.

    November 2018

Got my surgery date November 27th super excited ready to start this new journey seems like the days are moving slower than I’d like any tips of encouragement would certainly be welcomed😊
  21. I think the stretch of a gastric sleeve is different from the stretch of a gastric bypass. The part left on the sleeve is the muscular part, the gastric bypass, it is bypassed. So the stretch of a sleeve is not as easy as a gastric bypass which is just stomach tissue. I could be wrong but this is what I understand. Muscles can stretch but they can also shorten. If you and I quit abusing our stomach I believe it will shrink and give us more restriction. I am already feeling different, I am paying attention more. I ate yesterday in dead silence, no TV on, something I haven't done in a while. It was amazing how soon the full signal showed up. Saving the rest for later is a good thing, that's why Tupperware was invented...😀

    Protein Shots

Stay away from most of the protein "bullets" and "shots" that you will see in stores and read about online. If you look closely at their ingredient list, you will see that they are made with "collagen" protein. These products are attractive to bypass patients because they contain very large amounts of protein in very small volumes - usually 3 to 4 ounces. The problem is that collagen protein is an incomplete protein (meaning that it is missing one or more of the nine essential amino acids that your body requires and cannot manufacture). In addition, collagen (aka "gelatin" protein) has a PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score) digestibility score of 0.08. The PDCAAS has been adopted by the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the World Health Organization as the standard for measuring all proteins. Proteins are ranked on a scale of 0 (least digestible) to 1 (most digestible). Whey, Soy, Milk, and Casein proteins all have a PDCAAS score of 1.0. All the protein in the world is useless if your body cannot digest it.
  25. I've been researching the differences between the bypass and sleeve options and it gets really confusing! My understanding from most studies is that you can achieve comparable weight loss over the first couple of years with either. But, since I have such a long history of losing large amounts of weight and gaining it all back and more, I am really concerned about choosing the one which will give me the best chance of keeping the weight off for the rest of my life. So, from all I have read so far, the biggest difference between the way bypass works and the sleeve is, that although both restrict intake and hunger, the bypass also changes absorption. So - I assume this means that if I get to the point 3-4 years down the road where I can consume 1000 calories a day with either (which several sites suggested is typical), fewer of those calories will actually be absorbed with the bypass than with the sleeve. Is this correct? My biggest fear is that if I go for a long period of time eating less calories - which will happen with both - will there be a time when my body thinks it is in that starvation mode again and switches back to that horrible place of being able to gain weight at a much lower calorie level than normal. For example now, I might normally eat 1400 calories a day, but if I want to lose weight so I might eat 1000 calories/day for a few months. Then if I start eating 1200 calories/day, I gain all that weight back! Is there that same "diet rebound" with WLS in general or not? If not, why? And if so, is there less of that with bypass because your body just doesn't absorb as much ever again?
