  1. I will not lie to you and tell you that the pre-opt diet is easy. It is not. It takes will power and determination. But it does really prepare you for the after-banding. I found it much easier to transition to eating less once I was back on solid foods because of the weeks of liquids, then mushies and soft foods. I believe if you are successful on the pre-opt diet, you have a much better chance of not copping out later. IMHO. I'm rooting for you!
  2. I scheduled my surgery for June, but am having to push it back to August just due to school and scheduling issues. I'm motivated to lost some weight in the few months until then, though, and I really want to get a jump start on it, as well as get used to the preop diet. Did anyone do the liquids and 1 meal preop diet before you had to? I was thinking just for one week and then try to eat as healthy as I can and work out before my surgery.
  3. I'm pre-op. My insurance co (Tri-Care) requires a period of time to learn healthy eating and weight loss prior to surgery. Prior to seeing the nutritionist I had given up soda which was huge for me. My surgeon gets in my face and says, you are fat because you are addicted to food. I was warned before I got in there with him (I had my big girl panties on thank goodness). Also helped that he spoke from experience--he and his complete staff are banded. The surgeon staright off said get down to 30 carbs a day. Once I looked at food lables I was shocked. Several weeks later I saw the nutritionist--now I don't eat rice, pasta, potatoes. I'm gluten free, so I already don't eat bread. So, 30 carbs...totally doable! You really need this "pre" pre-op time to learn a new way of eating and that eating is truly overrated. We've been eating all our lives, some of us longer than others. I really wanted to jump in and get that surgery pronto quick. I know now, that had I done that, it would have been disasterous. We have to really learn, understand and come to grips with how we got here first.

    Dinner

Tried to do a fancy dinner tonight to change things up alittle 4oz flounder, couple broccoli florets and half of a small potatoe baked in the oven with lemon juice salt and pepper, according to my fitness pal this totaled 156 calories, 8 grams carbs, 6 grams fat and 18 grams protein. The only problem was being only 3 weeks post op once I finished the flounder I was done. I guess my eyes are bigger then my stomach, literally.

    April 27th surgery

My surgery date is also April 27th! We can do this. I know it's hard but we'll get through and do great! You work from home, so you can gauge when you feel it's best to go back to work. I took 3 weeks off, but I'm hoping to go back after 2. Sending you good vibes!
  6. My name is Heather. I am 33 years old and have decided to have the LAP-BAND® procedure after a very frightening diagnosis of an ischemic stroke in the early part of summer. While the only effect of the stroke is a weakened left eye muscle, it scared me straight. I also have a co-morbidity's of high cholesterol (possibly high BP), migraines and some mild depression in the past. I am 5ft 9in. I have been on every diet imaginable and well we all know the outcome... Wonderful losses at first, then big gains! Woohoo!! NOT! Anyway, I am currently 249.6 pounds (10/26/09) and hell bent and determined never to make the 250 mark! (Pipe dream, I know!) I had my first appointment with Dr. Wilfred Aguila in Tampa, Florida on (10/26/09) and have my psych evaluation December 1st to find out how crazy I really am! I met with the nutritionist on Nov 12th, and then the packet of information goes off to my insurance company, (Humana). Then my surgery date.. target date is 1st or 2nd week in January 2010. I am excited and really ready to take care of ME!!! but I can't do it alone! ME3.... ME, My doctors, and YOU! Very much love and wishes of success to all. Heather

    Eating

I struggled my first month during my medically supervised diet (required for 6 months per my insurance). My head just wasn't in it - to me, it felt like yet another attempt to lose weight that I was just going to fail. BUT then I realized this is the time to get my act together because this time I will.not.fail. There's a light at the end of this yo-yo dieting tunnel and I'll soon have the tool I need to help me be truly successful. With the mindset shift, I was able to make a couple of changes that have really helped and I've been steadily losing since then. I started swapping out one meal a day with a Protein shake or Protein Bar (paired with some veggies or something small). That change led to other changes (better eating/better choices) and a few weeks later I seemed to break out of the cycle of constantly craving crap food. I hope you find something similar. Good luck!

    Pre-OP diet other options

Unjury makes a really good protein powder. It's a little pricey but good. My only suggestion is not to stock up on any one product and/or flavor. Things may not taste as good for a while after surgery. I came to loathe some of the flavors I had. It passed in time, but for a week or two I had to choke them down. You may want to add a fiber supplement to your drinks like Benefiber. That might help with the bathroom issues.

    Pre Op Diet Loose Stools

I'm the same but only day 5 of 2 week liquid diet. I wish I had the other problem!

    Pre Op Diet Loose Stools

It is the opposite for me. i am on week 4 of my 5 week pre-op diet and if i do not take benefiber i feel like i am dying with every BM. i think my body was so used to all the unhealthy crap that it became learned to wok with it, and now that i only have shakes and veggies going in it is trying to figure out it's new normal lol!

    Worried!

Oh you will feel full. It is a different feeling than you had before but you will know when it happens. I do not even get hungry. I have to remind myself to eat and keep myself on a schedule to eat and drink. I do get thirsty though. I can cook for my whole family and not even bat an eye about what I am not suppose to be eating. It does not bother me at all. I am almost 5 weeks out and cannot only eat a few small bites before I am extremely full.

    Fruit/veggies

Week 2 I started with sauteed spinach and went real well. It was pretty soft and then I moved to salad and chewed really really good. This too went well and just tried one at a time. That is what I suggest that you just start off with something soft and then try one at a time.

    Sneezing

Mine is just one big hiccup- then I know I am completely full. It's so funny. I developed this at about three months out.

    Fruit/veggies

I started in week 5 when I was off soft foods- just a bite or two at a time to see how my stomach would handle it- I have had no problems with either, cooked or raw. I eat fresh fruit several times a week, and I have either raw spinach or raw kale in my smoothie every morning.

    NOTHING

Have you gone back to your rules of the band? Protein first and aiming for 60-80 grams? What types of foods are you eating? I find that it helps me when I get a calendar and plan out what I'm going to eat for the week. Get back with your doc and see what he has to say. I'm so sorry I know this can be frustrating.

    Eating

Wow - that's awesome for you! I was on full liquids for two weeks, am currently in pureed for 6 weeks, followed by soft foods for 4 weeks and by month 4 regular diet. Each Dr is different and I'm fine with the slow progress expecially in light of the fact that I have had some problems tolerating different foods. Im glad that you are able to eat regular food with no problems!

    Eating

Is your surgeon okay with you eating normally? Liquid diets are for your own saftey and the top of your stomach is extra sensitive to leaks, which is why purees and liquids for first couple of weeks. As long as your doc is okay with your food, good for you. Otherwise, don't push - you will be there soon enough.

    Please Respond!

Hmm... I don't have any experience with that. They did ask me to go off of my birth control 2 weeks prior to surgery to help minimize risk of blood clotting? Did you have to do the same? I'd think going off birth control could mess with regularity.

Before or after Cancun Vacation ?

I had my surgery 2 weeks before a one week vacation to the beach with my girls and husband. I'm glad I did not wait. Vacation keeps you busy and takes your mind off food.
  20. You shouldn't have to put off the surgery. At 10 weeks out most people are feeling pretty normal. You probably won't be able to try very much of the cuisine (or any of the alcohol) offered in the all inclusive package, but I'll bet you'll be having so much fun otherwise, you won't miss it.

    Liquid diet?

Mine is only one week but honestly not nearly as bad as I thought. I think it is because I feel as though I am so mentally ready for this surgery that I just want to do things the right way and know this is part of the process. I am on day four today. As of this morning I had lost 4 pounds after three full days on it so that is very exciting and motivates me to continue because I will be that much closer to goal. Don't get me wrong, I am hungry but it is manageable. broth and tea help, the warm liquids are comforting. I also have been going to sleep earlier to avoid any temptations. I have not cheated once and am very proud of myself. You can do it!

    Annoyed...

I have been hearing it for weeks now! My family is afraid of the unknown... There are some that say it's a waste and it doesn't work and others that say it's the easy way out... That pisses me off! Especially on day 5 of the pre op liquid diet!!! Yeah easy OK! Then I get the eat healthier and exercise BS or the best one is that I've lost the weight already....Well guess what?? It came back and brought along some friends!!! Lol This pre op diet is really hard especially when you have people telling you that you'll never eat again!! They actually had me doubting my decision! I am doing this for myself and nobody is going to change my mind! I need this tool. Don't worry about what your cousin says...she will be wishing she had done it when she sees you looking hot! Good luck!!

    Liquid diet?

I've done the liquid diet twice now; first for 13 days before the surgery was postponed (I was too sick for anesthesia to be safe) and this time for 9 days (postponed due to family issue). It's really not that terrible, or at least it wasn't for me. I honestly got to the point where I just didn't pay attention to it anymore- there were days when at bedtime I'd realize I'd only had 2 shakes all day. On a "regular" day I don't eat Breakfast at all and don't have lunch until around 2pm, so I am accustomed to going long stretches without eating. I had a harder time with the caffeine the first time around. The second time, I switched to half-caff for a week before starting the liquid diet, then switched over to decaf on day 5. No headaches the second time around. I'm not sure for when my surgery will be rescheduled. It might be as late as mid-September. I don't know.. need to look at the calendar and juggle dates. BUT I"LL GET THERE!!

    Mexico

Hi there, it's funny because my husband and I went to Mexico exactly 3 weeks before my surgery. I checked with the hospital nurse and the doctor and they said it was no problem. Please check with your doctor to as they may have different requirements. Also, watch what you eat there as my hubby and I both had quite a bit of tummy trouble once we got back. Good luck to you.

    Discouraged

Please don't get discouraged. Everything happens for a reason. Just do what you have to do to keep the weight off and even getting rid of a few more pounds. I understand how you feel. I do????. My 6 months of weight monitoring was done in June. I'm excited thinking my surgery date will be what July /beginning of August, nope September the second week of September. I got up set and I said to myself nope don't rush God everything in his timing. What we want now is not what he wants now for us. Just know your surgery date is set. And just eat right and work out September is around the corner. Hope I helped you to smile
