@sleeversk with your reflux being so bad why did your surgeon do the sleeve? Gastric bypass is what supposedly rids you of reflux (I’m still waiting for my surgery so I can not positively confirm that yet)

Overwhelmed and scared... but hopeful?
Smanky replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm a bypasser in the early months post-op, and honestly, it's fine. Your stomach is so small, and it takes time to progress from the liquid, to puree, to soft food stages. I'm still in puree, and when it's a thicker-puree, I struggle to eat much at all. I'm a vegan, so veggies are LIFE, but honestly the thought of chewing perfectly cooked broccoli or blanched kale (a fave) right now is enough to make me flinch. Texture is everything and while I too munched happily on my vege pre-op, my healing stomach is making the wait to eat them again perfectly fine! I can wait. In the meantime, vegetables can be cooked into my high protein meals before being pureed, so I'm still getting the nutrients and flavour. Stick to your plan, and you'll do fine! -

vikingbeast replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It's so strange to be told not to eat vegetables, isn't it? After so many decades of "get your five a day!" But it's not forever. You only have a little room for food, especially at first, and so it's not "no vegetables", it's "vegetables only after protein", and at first there's not room for vegetables. It will get better, and fast. And you'll learn how to re-eat. The best part (though I had sleeve, not bypass) is that things I thought I would be tempted by aren't tempting at all. Last night I went to a birthday party and there was a whole tray of cookies and candies. None of it looked good and the size of the brownies actually made me a little queasy. In the Before Times, I'd have knocked down two or even three brownies. Now? Meh. -
Who has failed the pre-op liver shrinking diet?
Smanky replied to EsojLabina's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi EsojLabina. The liver shrinking diet is hard, no doubt about that! I don't think anyone breezes through it without at least a few days of wishing the weeks away. Try distracting yourself - do some DIY, engage in a hobby, go for walks - anything to take your mind off food. Do you mean you're thinking you won't be able to eat like before? Because that is actually true. The upside is your body won't want to eat like before post-bypass, and that's the biggest tool to help change your mindset around food. But honestly, changing your mindset about food needs to begin pre-surgery, and if you have a complex relationship with food like binge-eating disorder or emotional eating, then you really need to see a bariatric psychologist to get on top of that, or the issues will follow you post surgery, and can manifest as depression. -

Overwhelmed and scared... but hopeful?
fourmonthspreop posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey, Just reaching out to the community for some support. I've recently been approved for gastric bypass after going through 4 months of supervised diet and mental health counseling. I can basically get my surgery as soon as possible after completing my EKG and endoscopy (Dr's words). When they went over the gastric bypass procedure with me and all the complications, deficiencies and how strict the diet is (no fresh vegetables for a while which is what I've heavily been relying on to lose weight and enjoy it too) I was almost knocked down to my old feelings of hopelessness. The truth is, hearing all of that terrified me. It scares me and makes me think that there are so many opportunities to mess up. I just want some advice on how to quell this fear and really fear of failure. It honestly didn't feel real to me until the Dr said I was good to go. I felt so ready and confident until this moment and I can't understand why. I feel like I should be celebrating and happy but I'm not. I'm frustrated and scared. Any help or advice on this? I'm also working on it with my psychologist but want to hear about your experiences too. Much love! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Are you feeling better yet? I'm six weeks post bypass and glad to find your post because I can relate. The list of foods that don't give me nausea is much shorter than the ones that do. The constant nausea is exhausting and depressing.

Bit of a swelly belly situation toward day’s end but otherwise not too bad. Bypass done on Mon the 11th. Getting a better sense of what my wee little pouch can hold. P.S. It ain’t much!!! 😂

I can’t say my experience has been that rough. My bypass was in August and I still take Prevacid. I hope your recovery goes quickly because you have been working hard to improve your overall health!

When I had mine done a few years back I had the same issue with water. Adding crystal lights minimized the aches going down. It was weird because prior to I didn’t like crystal light and I preferred water solo lol. But it’s true what my Dr. said your taste buds will change. And another thing he strongly suggested was to NOT buy in bulk yet since it’ll all be trial and error until one can discover what one can tolerate, because again what one might tolerate and like prior to surgery can change post. My revision from sleeve to duodenal switch is 10/27!!

I got Covid but my bypass was over 3 years ago. I only had a massive headache for about 36 hours. You are taking that many meds now after the bypass for reflux? Some docs have you take at least an omeprazole or Prevacid after. Mine told me to take it for the rest of my life. But I had a bypass just because of acid reflux.

I am 2 weeks post op lapband to bypass conversion. I have experienced dumping about 5 times already and it’s just absolutely so horrible. I’m not drinking while I eat, I’m still on mushy foods. It’s happened to me from tuna fish, last night it was from half a protein shake. I thought it was supposed to be from having too much sugar or fatty foods. Has anyone experienced it this often even while eating what you’re supposed to be eating? It’s so disheartening and is making me regret this surgery so bad. And yes, I know this is a question for my doctor who I will be in touch with. Just looking for any personal experiences and if it got better

1990 RNY revision at age 73
Sunnyway replied to Sunnyway's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The RNY is a gastric bypass, with the rerouting of the duodenum and small intestine (the "roux" in Roux-en-Y). The intestinal portion does not need to be shortened during my revision, but the anastomosis (the opening from the pouch to the small intestine) will be made smaller, along with making the pouch smaller, The stomach will be detached and a large portion of the fundus (the top of the stomach) will be excised. This is a much more complex surgery than I expected, The surgeon will schedule six hours for the surgery, but may be done in about four. Fortunately, he is very experienced with RNY revisions, -
1990 RNY revision at age 73
Sunnyway replied to Sunnyway's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks. I didn't know that a revision was even remotely possible until I met a man just before the pandemic started who had had an RNY revision prior to total knee replacement surgery. COVID blew it out of my mind until this past April. I then decided to follow up, learned I was a candidate, and am progressing through the program. I have just had a CAT scan, and will have a cardiology evaluation next week. If approved by the cardiologist, the papers will go to Medicare. My surgeon says I should be able to have the revision before the end of the year. Despite losing 50 lbs pre-surgery, I am still over well 100 lbs overweight. Revision surgery doesn't work as well, but he thinks I can lose another 60 lbs, which would take me to 215. I would really like to pass 200. We shall see. My dream goal is 175. For what it is worth, my surgeon says I am NOT too old for the revision. While the surgical part is complicated, the laproscopic incisions will be so much easier for recovery than the open surgeries I had previously. Why don't you encourage your friend to follow this thread? I will update my progress post surgery. -
Here come the dumb questions and there are many more where these came from!
Sunnyway replied to Maroux's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, thanks for the tip. I do take 150mg XL Wellbutrin I have been taking it for 3 years (and before that 10+ years of 300mg XL) with by old stretched out pouch and had no issues. My pouch after revision will be only 1 oz, so I'd better advise my prescribing physician -
I got a surgery date November 1, 2021- Gastric Bypass! I was originally scheduled for October 13, 2021. But during my EGD they thought I had Gastroparesis. So surgery was postponed until after I had a Gastric Emptying study. Now that test is complete, I don't have Gastroparesis, I instead I'm supposed to have Dumping Syndrome. I am a type 2 diabetic. I am just glad that is all behind me, I now can continue to move forward. Sent from my Pixel 4a (5G) using BariatricPal mobile app

1990 RNY revision at age 73

Thank you for posting about your journey. I suspect my friend had a similar procedure 30 years ago but she refuses to look at a revision. I have tons of positive thoughts for you and this next part of your life! I’m 62 and my RNY is on 10/25. I can’t wait for the next part of my life to start! -
I went today for my cardiac consult. Is it normal for the cardiologist to want to do LOTS of testing? They are doing a echo of my heart, making me wear a halter monitor for a week, and doing a stress test. If I wind up having congestive heart failure, will bypass potentially be off the table?
