Hello! Family knows more than Dr's!
bloreorbust replied to splitswitch's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey, even in situations where you "don't have as much to lose", everyone's body handles extra weight differently and sometimes even a smaller amount over that threshold causes serious medical issues as you're experiencing. Try to give them time to come around. Let them see how much work really goes into this whole process. But stay the course. If you think this is right for you, then your family is going to have to accept that one way or another. Tell your wife you're doing this in order to have a longer and healthier life with her and your children. You're tired of suffering with this excess weight and this is the help you need to handle it. Then just don't talk about it anymore for a while. Keep on planning and doing the appointments you need to, but let it all sink in with her for a while. As for your mother who thinks she is a medical professional, point her to the studies and reviews from medical professionals. Those will clearly state the relatively low risk of gastric bypass surgery, and the mountain of evidence that points to the positive effects it has on health. The rate of death is between 1-3% overall for gastric bypass, and even less for surgeon's who have performed more precedures. The rate of complications directly related to surgery is around 10%. I bet those are a lot lower than your current risk of heart attack, stroke, and sudden death due to the health conditions you currently have. Help her with the information she needs to weigh the risks against the rewards. I wish all the best for you in your journey. You will find support here and a wealth of helpful and caring individuals. Welcome. -
Out Of Pocket Costs
~Stephanie~ replied to Iamreallydoingthis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations! I have Aetna, already met my deductable and so far with my 10% the surgeon was $400 (paid in advance and it can change once the charges are submitted to insurance) and the hospital said I will need to pay $590...i don't think that includes the anestheologist which I think is another $100-$150... -

My surgeon wouldn't even schedule surgery until I had lost 10% of my excess weight. It depends on your team, but you might not get to the pre-op diet without some work first. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App

I've been waiting for 2011 for insurance reasons and it's FINALLY here. I see my surgeon for a follow up Tuesday morning and they are resubmitting everything that day or Wednesday. I've been through the whole process for approval and everything was put on hold back in May 2010 bc the company I work for required 5 years CONSECUTIVE coverage under the health insurance......they didn't care that I've been employed there for 10 years! I changed insurance back in 2005 for like 3 months when I married my husband but went right back to my own coverage as soon as I could...but it wasn't effective until Jan 2006......SO here I am....the 5 year requirement is met, everything else is done. I'm so ready to get my tool strapped in and start changing my life for good! :-)

Who would NOT do it again and why?
altagirl replied to LOVESAQHA's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had a complete "melt down" when I went into the OR - if I had not already been on meds it would have been a full on panic attack. I went through the doubts and second guesses - some after I had surgery - but I am so pleased with my results. This was the best decision for me and it has been an easy recovery and adjustment. You are in good hands with Dr Ortiz. I had surgery 9/10 so I am about 6 months out now. I know you asked about people who had regretted the surgery but I decided to reply anyway. Hope it helps and if you have any specific questions about OCC please feel free to ask or post in the self pay Mexico forum - -

What protein shake do you recommned?
lolasmom replied to Ellie4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Syntrax Nectar...It comes in over a dozen flavors and I love them all. My very favorite is the Chocolate Truffle. They all have 100 calories, 0 carbs, 0 fat and 24 grams of protein. I buy it from mybariatricpantry.com You can buy a sample pack with 10 different flavors for about $12.00. I tried many kinds of proteins drinks and powders and this is by far the best. -
You mentioned "fainting spells".... What do you mean???? There are many many many times where l will stand up, and when l do, l feel very dizzy... This lasts about 3-10 seconds, then lm fine..

honestly, i did it. I had a stall for about 10 weeks. Of course during this time i was losing inches intially, but eventually, everything came to a stop, the weight, the inches... So i went back onto liquid diet for 3 days, and whoop, the scale moved, 3 lbs. Then darn! my period came for a visit, and I haaven't step on the scale since then, but i've started eating normal again, cos the fainting spells were pretty bad. I'm not for or against this idea, just sharing my story. anyway personally, 6 day stall i think its pretty normal, i think you should weigh yourself every 2 weeks..

I'm having an internal struggle as to which surgery I should have. I have a lot of weight to lose - almost 200 lbs. Most of which was gained in the last 2 years. I know I need to discuss this with the surgeon, but I'm still on the fence myself. I like the idea of the band as being a tool instead of actually changing my anatomy. But then with say the sleeve or the rny, the weightloss is faster. But its not all about how fast you lose - I know that. I keep thinking to myself that I can lose that much with the band. But then I think - then why can't I do it without the band? I've not been in this situation for a lifetime or even a great portion of my life so its difficult for me to comprehend. Sure, I've struggled with my weight my whole life, but up til I got sick in 2006, I always won those battles. Sure, I was a little overweight but I was healthy and happy. And now I'm far from healthy and I can't even see happy from where I'm at. Its not just that I'm sad. I'm ANGRY. I had started my training to run a half marathon. Yeah - i was in great shape! Then one day....The world toppled down on me. Combining not lifting weights, not running every day with making poor food choices and being depressed because I couldn't do what I wanted, then add in the IV treatments and the steroids, which caused more depression which caused more poor food choices and more eating - yeah I can see how I got here. I know I would have gained a lot of weight even without the poor food choices, but I just added insult to my own injury. I take full responsibility for Jack in the Box for dinner and breakfast nearly every day for quite a while. OH - and you bet that's a large fry with that. Diet coke, of course to drink. Or Iced tea - unsweetened! I'm on a diet, afterall! I kick myself every day for making a bad situation worse. There's no telling what point I would be at if i had made better food choices. I know it wouldn't be at the 200 lb overweight mark. But maybe just 100 lbs. 100 lbs is doable! I can deal with that. But TWO HUNDRED?! What the hell did I do to myself? And all because I was sad that I couldn't run. Yeah. That makes sense. Now, I'm so far beyond being able to control this that I now have to have a device put in my stomach OR have 3/4 of my stomach removed in order to even be healthy. Uhm WHAT?! I guess I'm an overachiever. I did in 2 years what it takes some to do in a lifetime! But. I'm addressing it now. I'm doing what I need to do to get healthy. It wasn't all that long ago. I don't need the pictures to remember what it was like to be a size 8/10. I remember how it felt. I remember that I could sit in any chair, climb a ladder, run stairs in 4 inch heels and put my feet behind my head *lol* it wasn't that long ago! So yeah - there's a bit of speed factor going on in my mind. But there's also a lot of "I don't wanna go through this again" going on too. But I know my lifestyle. I know what I want to do in the future and that tells me that its going to be the band or sleeve. Then I have to think about longevity - which again, is probably band. But can I just control it and do the sleeve? I just don't know that I want to alter my anatomy. But then again, if it was my foot that was killing me, I'd have that cut off.... So many thoughts. I know - meeting with the surgeon will really help. Buuuuut....the more I can work through in my mind first, the better. *ramble*ramble*ramble*ramble*

:help: Hello everyone;I would appreciate some input from experienced Lap-Banders as I am getting really discouraged. I was banded 4/17/06-had my 1st fill on May 31st. I think it was too aggressive a fill or else something got stuck because I was vomiting so9lids and only keeping liquids down. So the Doctor did an "unfill" backk to 2cc(10 cc Band)--I was hungry and had minimal restriction. Had a 2nd fill on July 5th under fluoroscopy with barium and all to 5cc.That was 6 days ago and again have been vomiting solids.Went to the Doc this AM and he removed 1cc-now have 4 cc in there. They said that should be just right. I have tried mushies and have been vomiting again. I like some restriction as the weight loss is good--total of 28 pounds so far--- but I know the goal is to be able to eat small amounts of solid foods and chew well and eat slowly and lose weight. Am I doing something wrong or is My Doc too aggressive with fills. My band area is sore from vomiting as is my throat. I am very discouraged. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.Judy

Just wanted to throw some hope out there for those looking for approval from their health insurance company. I have United Healthcare and my employer is Walgreens. They require a 6 month supervised diet and 5 years of documented weight history that shows a BMI of over 40 without co-morbidities or 35 with co-morbidities. I had some major fears about getting denied because I didn't have any health insurance coverage for most of the last 5 years, thus did not go to the doctor to have my weight documented. I decided to go for it anyway! I went to my first seminar at the end of February and began my diet in April. I contacted every hospital I had ever visited and requested my records. I had to fill out forms and mail them in. One hospital charged me $18 and the other $40. I ended up with two pieces of proof where my weight was documented. One from late 2006 and the other from the beginning of 2010. I then gathered two pictures from each year going back to 2007. My insurance rep from the surgery center gathered all of this together and sent my case to insurance on November 6th. Then I held my breath...for a long time... Once the three week mark hit, I was convinced I'd receive a denial. Then I wondered how would I even appeal if the reason is due to lack of documentation? Figured I was done. Yesterday my insurance rep called me and apologized again and let me know the case was still pending (she was so awesome throughout the process and provided me updates several times a week). Then... 10 minutes later she called back to tell me I was approved! I'm so excited, nervous, anxious and happy! So, all in all, I wanted to share my experience because I know how it is to wonder...and wonder....and wonder...

Everyone's idea of "rock bottom" is different. When I realized I had passed 300 pounds, it was quite a shock. I didn't own scales, never weighed myself. I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, recently had breast cancer, all thought to be obesity-related. I truly felt that I might not live another 10 years if I didn't do something major. Now I look forward to getting on the scales every morning to see the progress I've made. I now have hope for the future--that I'll be able to watch my little granddaughter grow up. I am very glad that I have taken this step. It hasn't been easy during the "lap band hell" time, but it hasn't been as hard as I thought it would be either!

Weight gain after 2-3 years?
livvsmum replied to HeavenlyGirl101's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
The fabulous thing about the sleeve is that it never goes away. Some may choose to ignore it and eat things we shouldn't be eating, but if you choose to abide by the nutritional guidelines, your sleeve will always work with you. It doesn't "go away" after 2-3 years. So, you are in charge of the extent of your success. If you stick with the program, you will be successful in the long-term. Some do regain after a couple of years though, and some never reach their ultimate goal. It's like anything else; it all depends on the amount of work you're willing to do. I'm 3 years post op and I've been at or below goal weight since about 10 months post op. So it is totally possible. But, I did a lot of hard work, both physically and emotionally. Good luck! -
How can you 'eat' food so soon after RNY?
green*eyed*girl replied to meyouus's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
That's it, every surgeon is different and expects you to follow their instruction. I am one of those who you are talking about. I had no pre-op diet and on day 5 after surgery I was on soft food. Mind that for 3 days I had nothing by mouth, not even water, day 4 water, day 5 soft, and day 10 I was allowed to progress to well chewed solids! It was a bliss, finally I felt restriction, and I did very well. My surgeon progresses all of his patients as fast as he can. He is brilliant and I did everything he asked for. It is confusing to see us having such different giudlines, it makes you question who is right or wrong, but I guess we all just follow our doctor's order. So do not be too quick to judge, your wrong can be somebody's right! -
Hi!! I'm good!! My surgery was moved to 12:30... Then an emergency came in earlier and he had to operate on her. (Who is my room mate from hell!) lucky me! Ha So I went in at 4:15 and woke up at 6:26pm. In my room by 8:30. Because of my room mate I was up walking around to get away from her so I slept maybe 2 hours! But all is good! Going for my dye test around 9/10 ish.

I'll say what my mother tells me all the time. Always file an appeal.. even if it's 10 times. She actually works for BC/BS and said that 80 - 90 % of the time they will approve on an appeal.
