2 week pre-op diet help!
catwoman7 replied to MChaney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
believe it or not, my two-week pre-surgery diet was more restrictive than yours. I was only allowed no-calorie fluids, 4-5 protein shakes, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, and one cup of broth or tomato juice a day. -
Accidently been drinking coffee
Alex Brecher replied to BrightNights's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
According to previous ASMBS guidelines from the ASMBS website, "Q: Do I need to avoid caffeine after bariatric surgery? A: Caffeine fluids have been shown to be as good as any others for keeping you hydrated. Still, it is a good idea to avoid caffeine for at least the first thirty days after surgery while your stomach is extra sensitive. After that point, you can ask your surgeon or dietitian about resuming caffeine. Remember that caffeine often comes paired with sugary, high-calorie drinks, so be sure you’re making wise beverage choices." 2 week pre-op diet help!
chelsea325 replied to MChaney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre-op diet is made so that it shrinks your liver enough for them to safely do the procedure. By cheating, it can cause complications with surgery and also make it harder on you after the surgery. I know this isn't the answer that you want and you're going to see where some people don't even have to do a pre-op diet but trust your surgeon and take a protein shake or something else from your list to Thanksgiving so that you won't be tempted. Temptations are going to be there not just for Thanksgiving but every day after your surgery. Good luck ❤️ -
Hi MChaney, every program is different and should follow your programs guidelines. Mine was different in which I could have some real protein but that was my program You can ask your team about including some turkey breast and veggies and get their approval. I would also invite you to reflect on your decision, is one day being traded for a better life. I chose this week for surgery knowing well I will skip my fav holiday, but some things are just worth it. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

Hey folks I need advise please! They put me on the two week pre-op diet today and I'll post their guidelines below. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, can I get by with cheating just tmro if I stuck to just about meat and veggies? Will that impact me if I have Thanksgiving dinner? This is also odd, they told me I am to have NOTHING but what's on the list.. that includes meat and eggs... That's protein so I dont understand why I can't have that? Even if it's tuna or something. Can I get some advise please, I'm really frustrated. If need be I'll stay home and not go to Thanksgiving but I don't want to have to do that if I don't have to. Nov 16 surgery date, bored of protein shakes
kcuster83 replied to SageIce's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
During post op, all liquids counted as liquid. So, even my protein shakes were also counted towards my fluids. I made sure everything I drank had protein except plain water. Once I went on to actual foods it got harder but I worked out a plan that worked for me, but it was non stop drinking and eating, at least it felt that way. haha I woke up, drank 8 oz milk (protein and fluids) then a bottle of water, then ate something, then a bottle of water, then ate something, then a protein drink (gatorade zero with protein was my go to) then another water. It is easier now, but at first it was a chore. I am still/always allowed to count my shakes towards my fluids but I don't anymore and still drink at least 80 oz a day and of usually just plain water. I LOVE and have always been a HUGE water drinker so it is easy for me. I can also drink "normal" now. Some people struggle so you just have to find what works for you. You got this! -
Nov 16 surgery date, bored of protein shakes

Thanks, everyone. Made it through Liquid Diet pre-op. On to liquid diet post-op. It is going well. It's surprisingly hard to get the full liquid and protein count in. But glad that I'm on the other end of the WLS. -
Yes, it is quite normal - some don't do a liquid diet pre-op diet at all, preferring just low carb and/or fat, calorie restrictions, or no dieting at all - we didn't have any restrictions until the usual day before general surgery thing. A big YMMV thing. While I wouldn't go overboard on starting a liquid diet early, transitioning to more protein drinks and the like to get used to them and find your preferences is certainly useful. I don't find the getting used to post op idea all that compelling, as you likely won't feel like having much else other than liquids, but some programs go overboard on the back end with extensive liquid dieting post op, so for them, it might be useful. Our program had liquids in it, but transitioned us as we could tolerate thicker and more solid foods, with their findings that their patients tended to do better as they moved into more real food. But programs vary widely, so go with their instructions.

Accidently been drinking coffee
kcuster83 replied to BrightNights's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Every team is different, your team may not have that rule. The big thing is caffeine slows down the healing process. So most teams just require you stay away from it for a little while, during your healing. Other people do have problems with it, so luckily you don't. My team required 30 days before and after surgery to be caffeine free. I was never a coffee drinker so no issue for me. I sometimes make an iced coffee with a protein drink for a change. I also used decaf coffee, so you could always do that too. So you still get your coffee without all the caffeine. -
This brand in my hands down favorite. I can 't stomach a lot of them, but this one is good. I use a lot of their prodicts. https://1stphorm.com/collections/protein/products/level-1?return_url=%2Faccount&variant=31157418131542

Thank you! I find that I can tolerate monk fruit, stevia leaf and erythritol (not sure if we can use this) but not acesulfame-k and aspartame.Sucralose is questionable for my body as well. Unfortunately thats the majority of protein shakes. Making my own shakes may have to be my alternative. Sent from my SM-N970U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

I believe they all have some type of artificial sweeteners. You might have to make your own with unflavored protein. Or, if you know exactly which sweetener gives you headaches, you could avoid that particular one. Good luck.

I don't like premier protein shakes and they give me headaches. The artificial sweetners in a lot of low sugar protein shakes give me headaches. Any recommendations for protein shakes? Plant based prefered. Thanks! Sent from my SM-N970U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

Unflavored Protein
Merri Beth replied to naynay77's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The dietition at the weight loss center recommended isopure unflavored protein powder. I went and got it right away. When I went into GNC i told the girl that i was looking for unflavored protein powder and that i was in pre-op for gastric sleeve. Before I could tell her what he dietition recommended she said I will show you the one everybody seems to like and she came back with the isopure. I tried it with unsweet tea and it was great to not have the sweetness. I couldn't hardly stomach another sweet protein shake yuck! So I will experimenting with some other liquids. I am on day 8 of 14 pre-op. I cannot wait until next Monday which is surgery day! -
I am on day 8 of 14 on the liquid diet and yes it sucks!! I got the point that i cannot stomach the sweet protein shakes. I had my seminar today at the weight loss center, they suggested i get Isopure unflavored protein. I ran out and got it right after the seminar, I am going to survive this, whew that was close, just thought of the sweetness made me sick. I had some of the unflavored protein in unsweet tea and it was great!!

I have the most success with water through a straw bottle (though I'm careful about not swallowing as I suck) and with open-mouthed cups and mugs for protein shakes. I feel like it helps me pace myself better than trying to drink from the little bottles, and the little cups were too cumbersome for me.

Advice needed: How to do Thanksgiving
Spinoza replied to heartofmercury's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We don't do thanksgiving here but last holiday season I was 6 weeks post op and eating at a relative's house. I hadn't told anyone I had had the surgery so I actually cheated on purpose that day so I could eat more than usual and not draw attention to myself. So I ate the carbs first, veg second, protein little and last, and I kept drinking liquid to get it all through my pouch. I've cheated on purpose a few times since too. It's useful to know the rules (and break them) in certain situations if you don't dump (the risk I took!!!) Also brought home to me how very easy it is to eat around the pouch - even that close to surgery I managed about half a proper dinner. I'll be doing the same this year. However - that isn't what you asked OP! When I'm eating celebration meals at home I do it on a side plate and just have a tiny bit of everything. And I have never felt like I'm missing out. I hope you can too. -
Post op gastric bypass Pain
RoyallyElevated posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It’s been a week after gastric bypass surgery and I’m on thick liquids not taking pain meds much anymore but every time I drink or have my soups my stomach hurts a lot. Protein shakes are really sweet and hurt my stomach even water and popsicles. Plus I’m lactose intolerant and sensitive to corn ingredients so I stay away from those so I know that’s not where the pain is coming from. Anyone else have pain after eating or drinking post op? -
It is difficult for lots of us to drink enough when our new tummies are swollen and not healed. I was told to do my very best. Just keep an eye out for dark coloured urine, if that happens you should visit the ER for fluids. Otherwise, you should be ok for a while. [ Unless you are in a really hot country.] I caught up eventually. There are lots of things that help with getting liquids in. Try hot, lukewarm or cold drinks. Sugar free squash and ice lollies also add up to you allowance. Your protein shakes may make up part of your fluid allowance. If you struggle with the thickness of them, dilute them with milk, water or if you are allowed coffee. I hope you manage your liquids soon

Met with the surgeon for the final time prior to surgery on Dec 5th. I start liquid diet 10 days prior. SO I will be enjoying a small slice of pecan pie in Thursday. The liquid side consists of a combination of Soups (tomato & cream of types) thinned. broth , Protein Shakes, assorted sugar free jellos (like the green), popsicles, pudding and yogurts and such. The only admonishment is Clear Liquids the day before surgery. It will be the same diet after surgery until advised to proceed to the next step. Obviously this is my teams directions, Your team will probably have their own requirements. Best bet is to follow them. After all, that's why we're paying them the big bucks. Well wishes and prayers to all.

I'm six days post-op, and I don't think I regret it. The day I was dismissed from the hospital, they stopped my blood pressure and diabetic medications. That's huge! But since then, my sugar has been low, and my pressure has been low once or twice, which is weird. I'm just wondering if all my problems will reverse or if my body is trying to find my new homeostasis. I've been on liquids only for nearly a month now, and that's getting old. But no soreness, and I didn't experience any gas pain at all, even in the hospital, probably due to my unique circumstances. I've had a bit of trouble sleeping and have been a bit lightheaded. Lastly, I thought getting in protein would be a breeze, but in reality, it's far more challenging than I thought. I never knew how much I truly disliked protein shakes until I had to drink 3-5 daily for 30 days. I look forward to eating again, even if it is mush. Anything not sweet, anything I can use my jaws on, LOL 😂. Liquid Diet Weight Loss: -27 lbs (2 weeks) and Post Surgery Weight Loss: -4 lbs (4 days)

Two weeks post op today and I am so hungry. I am getting all my protein in. I have been forgetting my fluids that last few days. I go back to work tomorrow. Most of my incisions seem to healing nicely. I have only lost 3 lbs so far....
