  1. Hey everyone! I had my surgery on November 17th 2009 and hit a bump in the road when my incision tore open and took an extra month to heal. I am now pretty much healed and I just got my first fill on Tuesday. I have been pretty much following the restrictions of 2 days liquid and now I am on my 1st day of mushies. I understand a little of what you are going through because I have spent everyday since my surgery (except maybe 4 days into healing) wihtout restriction. I had lost seventeen pounds and then gained three. Now I have lost 2 again and I am struggling to maintain healthy eating. I am working out, counting calories, and keeping proteins high. I am just glad to be through my last holiday with no restrictions. Luckily my doctor has me come in on Monday or Tuesdays so that he can be a little more aggressive with my fills. I have a 14 or 16cc band I think and my first fill was 4cc, I have another appointment in 2 weeks so I will just keep plugging away, knowing that as someone else put it, though this weight is tough to lose it won't come back once there is restriction. Lets keep our chins up!
  2. Hi everyone, I am new to this journey and I have a tons of questions. I was dead set on having gastric bypass until I went to an informational meeting at Hershey Medical Center. Now, I think I am leaning toward the band. I would love any opinions especially from people who have Diabetes. I learned today that the resolution/improvement for DM with the band is actually much higher than is being reported and that 5 years out, banders are even with bypass patients as far as weight loss. I'd love some opinions:sad_smile:
  3. My husband was against it too and we were cash pay, but I told him I refuse to live the rest of my life this way. Our daughter had gastric bypass a year ago and looks just beautiful. She didn't exercise at first either, but now that she's lost her weight, she has her energy back and started working out and doing Zumba to tone up. Lapband will force you to make life changes on eating. You will not regret it if you go ahead with the surgery. Oh by the way, I would have had the surgery with or without his approval. The mental aspect of losing your weight and being happy is very important.
  4. Thanks Everyone, I'm glad i'm not the only one that is happens to. Pre WLS .. If I ate too much chocolate / milk I would get the Dumping too. Maybe its just something that some people have a predisposition for. My Nutrionist said that some Sleevers will get this the same as Bypassers ..It's getting better though.. Not happening as much. second day out of surgery

and is the bypass more serious and intense
  6. I will admit, i am a bit discouraged about my weight loss. I am 8 months out and have lost only 62lbs or so. Since November, my weight loss has slowed tremendously and have since only lost maybe 6lbs. If that! Im scared that i won't hit goal. I want to be down to 125 and that just seems so far away. I know that i would not have been able to lose the 60lbs without my sleeve and my health has improved drastically because of the sleeve. But i just wish i was one of the sleevers that the weight just melted off. I am thankful for my tool, but there are times i feel like my tool is broken
  7. My surgery is on the 7th of November and I have been doing the liquid diet for a week now. Last Wednesday my surgeon told me that I could eat vegetables, all I want. I could make them anyway I want except for frying them. I was going insane before he said this. I am mostly making soup and am surviving this way. I was told in my preop nutrition class that I had to only intake liquids. I was in hell and cheating until I saw my surgeon. The point of this exercise is to reduce the size of the liver. If you don't eat fat and carbs, the outcome will be the same. Ask your surgeon if this is OK. Each surgeon has there own opinion. I have already lost 10 lbs but the first 10 lbs of any weight loss program is water anyway. But I feel positive and this is the beginning.
  8. That's a fair point, but assuming you have a bypass at 72 it's not like you have to worry about the arthritis getting worse for the next 50 years. If you were in your 20s and 30s that could be 50 years of undertreated arthritis where you can't have nsaids and limited steroids, which could have a huge difference on quality of life. Especially something like RA where you should be aggressive early on It's a difficult situation and I don't think there is a clear cut answer

    Sugar grams

I am still preop but was wondering what people's limits are for sugar grams. How much are you able to tolerate after gastric bypass? Wondering if it is totally up to the person or there is a general rule. Thanks.
  10. Yes, Dorothy Sue, I did. Actually, I lost only 53 or so pounds over a year out. My goal was about 150. Then in the last 4 years, I gained 26 or so pounds and plateaued at 300 for a few years. I had ditched the whole WLS rules and went rogue. Too many reasons to give a hoot. I failed. But something in my Soul recently urged me, excitedly, to start all over again. I use BP as a big motivator, teacher, best friend. It eventually worked because I am now full on into my bypass diet, with the support of my husband, who must follow a diabetic lifestyle. I'm excited, hoping it's not a "honeymoon phase", and doing very, very well. Though I must say that getting in "enough" food has been a challenge. But with all the support I have, I know I can do it! Are you having issues with weight gain/regain? Polly
  11. Hi All, My journey started in May 2010. When I was fighting myself out of a chair, I knew something needed to change. I weighed in at 240 lbs. I went to my doctor and requested WLS. Since I am a Kasier memeber, the process was very easy to get started. Since I live in Sacramento, I had to travel to Richmond for all of the classes. After going to ALL the classes, tests, (blood work, ekg, etc) lost the weight that my doctor wanted (20 lbs), I got my date! This morning I'm at 216. My surgeon wanted me down to 220. So kuddos to me... On November 1st, I will be have my sleeve done. 15 days to go and counting... I want to WISH everyone luck! Pam

    Hi--I'm new here

Hey Sac Girl, I live in North Highlands and I am having my surgery November 2nd in Richmond by Dr. Fisher. What a trip that we're all so close together. I would love to meet up with you guys too if you don't mind? We're about the same size too, I started at 252 and my goal was 220 and I'm at 208 now.
  13. Hello to everyone. This is my first post. I started here because I just made up my mind that I want to have the lap band. I haven't even gone to a seminar yet, but I have been researching different weight loss surgeries for months now. I am worried now because I haven't been on a supervised weight loss program for 6 months, but from past experience, I can't do it. I looked in to this about 4 years ago when I was 6 feet tall and 268 pounds and they told me I "wasn't fat enough". Also, the doctor was trying to force gastric bypass surgery on me, which I definitely did not want. So here I am 4 years later, weighing 335 pounds and miserable. Once I go to my seminar, if they require me to start a six month diet program I will be very disappointed. I was hoping to have my surgery before the end of the year. But, I'm joining this group for support just in case I do get the bad news. By knowing there are others in the same boat as me will help. Any suggestions or stories that may give me some insight would be appreciated. And again, hello!

    Lap Band Poll

If my band messes up i will get a bypass, forget this messing around! It seems to me to be so many people who have had problems (saw this before this poll) I dont know if I am only seeing the neggative but i would have never guessed so many people would have so many problems.
  15. I'm just now able to eat pureed food. Now that I'm able to "eat" I'm learning to feel the pressure in my chest telling me to stop eating. It's hard to feel that sometimes then I overeat and it feels aweful!!!!! So my question is, did y'all feel this way and have a hard time knowing when to stop eating? It's only happened twice but my gosh It's awful. Btw I had gastric bypass.

    RNY in one month

Hi everyone i had a gastric band fitted in 2009. Was great for a while but sadly, blockages and breakages (from a faulty batch) and I have given up. I started at 260lbs, down to 175 with the band, now back up to 225 so time to stop that growth! i have a revision to a RNY (Fobi pouch type) on 14 December - and today heard insurance will pay 20% which is great news. The bypass involved no special diet, really, so am a bit apprehensive: protein drinks (less variety here in New Zealand I think), dumping, and having the RNY by open surgery not laparoscopic - all make be a bit nervous... Thanks to you all for keeping me company on this journey.

    Regrets

I was in the "First batch" of people in my area to get the band 2 years ago when it became available. I was wondering if anyone has regrets, would you do it again? why/why not? how supportive and accessible is your bariatric program's after care (i.e. for fills, etc)? The last time I was seen by the Bariatric center, the CNP asked me if I"d do it again, and i told her my answer varies depending on how im doing and what day of the week it is.....but seriously after thinking about it, I wish i wouldve done more research and gone for the bypass or sleeve instead (which wouldve been out of state). I have constant issues (i.e. daily) with PB and usually some form of vomitting, regardless of how fine i chew my food down to. i stay away from carbs, i push my protein and veggies....I'm just tired of feeling like i have less a life now than almost 60lbs ago. any feedback is welcome........tgif.

    new here from jersey

Hello all. I'm also from NJ, monmouth county. I have gone for my surgical consult and am scheduled for surgery November 24th. Sooo excited. My sugeon is Dr. Borao, had heard so many wonderful things about him and his staff prior to going for my consult. I went for my surgical consult and met with him, the nutritionist and the psychologist. My insurance requires that I have 6 months of monitored "dieting" through my regulr doc so November is month six. So how have you guys all made out? After reading it seems you have all had your surgery already.
  20. Yes. I was deciding between sleeve and bypass. Since I previously had a failed lap band, my doctor told me that bypass was the better option because it's easier to convert. I also have a lot of weight to lose.
  21. I got the sleeve and I don’t have heart burn anymore. My mom got the bypass and the Malabsorption is a big issue but as long as you do your routine labs and have a primary who knows bariatrics it helps
  22. Yes, I have the Lap Band. I didn't have many health issues, just PCOS and I have been off my Metformin since surgery and all of my PCOS symptoms have improved most have disappeared. I go to see my Endo in November for bloodwork to make sure that my PCOS is in remission. I also had back and knee pain that is gone now and I sleep more comfortably at night. I had mine done about four months ago and I am down 49 pounds and half way to my goal weight already. I have had no problems with the procedure. I was back to work within a week and feeling great within two weeks.

    Frustrated with Office

If they ignore you and put you off now, they won’t be there for you post op if you have a complication. . I made every excuse for my surgeons failure to return my phone calls or the fact that he was never there and I never could discuss my pain and swallowing issues cause the nurse said I had to talk to him and she couldn’t do anything. It wasn’t until my other dr was angry I was being ignored that I realized how inappropriate it was. And all the very serious complications he didn’t care about have caused damage to my esophagus and sleeve. I now have attempted a revision from sleeve to bypass once which couldn’t be done due to damage at top of my sleeve caused by GERD. so I was referred to a third surgeon to attempt a revision again. I suggest you make it clear that you need to be a priority or find another surgeon who will make you one. I immediately realized how awful the first surgeons office was after getting many additional opinions and no other office treated me like that. Make sure you are confident and comfortable with the person you are letting put a knife to you.
  24. Does anyone know how many staples are used for bypass? My friend asked me today and I happened to think "I really don't know"!
  25. I chose sleeve because: 1) the idea of rearranging my plumbing turned me off 2) i wanted to continue using NSAIDS with no issue (but surprise, surprise, i ended up no longer needing them) 3) i was afraid of dumping (again, surprise, surprise, i dump with the sleeve anyway) For what its worth, my surgeon said either surgery (sleeve or bypass) would, under normal circumstances, more or less produce the same results with the same person. And that unless there is pre-existing condition that would dictate a specific surgey (i.e., GERD, which i did not have) then it just boils down to personal choice. He was equally comfortable doing either surgery and advised me to choose the one *I* felt more comfortable with. There is alot of literature out there about average weight losses for the different types of WLS’s. But averages are just that: averages. They are NOT pre-determined stats that YOUR body will adhere to. Basically, results are significantly more tied to the person (and their actions/habits/physiology) than the specific surgery. Doc said that statistically, based on my starting weight, I could expect to lose 60 lbs in a year. Eff that, I lost 120 in 7 months. I’ve read of others on here who lost 50 in a year, still others who lost 200 over 2 years, and even one who lost 150+ in less than six months (all self-identified sleevers). So yeah…their results are quite spread out. In any case, whichever surgery you choose (pre-existing conditions excluded), your results will depend on YOU. Good Luck!
