  1. Mine was - 9 years ago when my dad died in 2007 of a massive heart attack at the age of 53 because he had diabetes/severly overweight (close to 400lbs) and he was a heavy smoker... I decided that I didn't want to die at 53 as I was already close to being the same weight as him and I was 23 years younger. I wanted to live to be able to play with my nephew and teach him everything my dad taught me and wouldn't be able to now... So, I decied on the lap band because the sleeve wasn't available to me back then. I had decent success, I lost weight - which was my goal - wasn't a complete success as I didn't lose 50% of my weight but I still lost some. Now, I want to do the revision to the sleeve and continue my weight loss and continue to become healthier, so that I can continue tplay with ALL my nieces and nephews now - three of which my dad never got the chance to meet and I don't want them to miss out on knowing him through me as my sisters had a different type of childhood with him then I did. I was the first and his subsititue boy - so I learned everything - they were the girls
  2. Hello, getting a revision from a band and am starting to have some questions. For a person who suffers from constipation which revision would be best the sleeve or bypass? Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

    Failure...

I had my sleeve done the end of August. It was a band to sleeve revision. I lost 30 lbs the first month but NOTHING since. Haven't gained...but haven't lost either. My protein intake is bad...I feel as if I have no restriction and I'm always exhausted. Im taking vitamins..iron and calcium. I walk but other than that not much else. I'm very discouraged and am embarrassed to go to my two month post op visit because I feel like a total failure. Am I the only one in this sinking boat?? Does it taste good?

I've never tried that kind. I use bariatric advantage. I buy the big bags for home and the packets for travel (flying). It's too thick for my liking so I mix it with water according to instructions and then add about 4-6 ounces of original unsweetened almond milk or nonfat milk if I'm at hotels without access to almond milk and a ton of ice. I also discovered it doesn't stir (dissolve) well with a spoon so I had to get a blender bottle to shake it really good for a couple minutes. I've been drinking one a day (breakfast) since my lap band was removed in Feb. 2017 In preparation for the sleeve revision and to help keep me from gaining weight in the interim. They taste pretty good. However, I'm pre-op so I hope my taste buds don't change after surgery because I've stocked up for a couple months. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app

    6 month diet requirement

Hello, I am in the same situation. I have Highmark Blue Shield and they have a policy for new procedures and one for revisions (I will post the revision policy) so I'm wondering if I will be required to do the 6 month diet again. I did it back in 2010 with my lap band but that was through Capital Blue Cross. I can't wait to get the band out, every day is a struggle with it! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. Too often, I am a revision from a lap band that has been in 10 years and causing me problems. I have a beautiful 3 year old boy and I am 45. I am the income earner in my house and I am so scared that something will happen.
  7. I was almost embarrassed to read some of the responses to the original post. Megan, no matter what people say, your story and experiences DO matter-- thanks for sharing. It's insulting to think "newbies" will run away because they read about your negative experiences; after all, we should all "bat for both teams" when doing our research. I don't think you sounded "preachy" like someone implied, I think you are genuinely concerned, and just want you story told. On the other hand, there are people who may (or may not) have a "wealth" of information but EVERY TIME they comment on a post, they come off as too-into-themselves-know-it-alls (at least to me)... And like someone said: if the shoe fits....! Thank you to those that also made their feelings be known, but at the same time showed compassion, understanding, and most of all respect for the original poster. And, Megan, I wish you all the BEST with your revision!! XOXOXO
  8. I had a revision done on the 29th. From band to sleeve. So far I can tolerate almost anything. Except today I tried some watered down hummus and felt terribly sick after. That was the 1st real time I've had any nausea, or thought I might throw up. I'm terrified of vomitting, and rupturing a suture. I'm still struggling to get all my Water in. But so far, I've had blended Beans, oatmeal, avocado w/ plain Greek yogurt, and Protein shakes. Everything is blended super fine. Maybe the hummus was too thick still, or too heavy. Activity wise, I can walk around stores and the mall, but have to take it very slow, or I'll feel faint. I have a lot of head hunger, and feel like I need to chew things. Luckily, I haven't had much gas pains, walking seems to help. Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App
  9. I had a revision on 11/5 due to GERD and regain due to my thyroid. I noticed the difference immediately. However the past few days I noticed slight discomfort but nothing like before. I’m a little concerned because it’s been 3 weeks and I’m only down 13 pounds.
  10. I am scheduled for a revision sleeve in June. Has anyone experienced gall bladder problems after being sleeved? I have heard it can be a problem.
  11. I am having a revision, lap band to RNY in June. How long did your surgery take. I am guessing 2 hours plus?????

    Are revisers different?

I had my band in 01/05 and to me it was very painful the first 4 days. I have a very low tolerance for pain. I had my revision on 12/20/13 and it was painless, hardly any pain, I was a little tender on left side for abt two to three days. I was really nervous abt the pAin w the sleeve. I had watch several u tube videos..some said no pain and others said worst pain in their life. So I wasn't really sure what to think. I was really scared but went ahead with it. When I came to I couldn't believe that it didn't hurt. I was pleasantly surprised and oh so relieved. No my only problems was EXTREME nausea and Diarrhea... My diarrhea has stop and the nausea not quiet as bad. Good luck in your venture
  13. I am to the point of just giving up. I had a band to sleeve revision on July 14th 2011. I lost 15 lbs on the liquid diet within the first two weeks.. That is all I have lost. This is not a stall. My concern is that I am still able to eat anything in any amount. I dont feel like my stomach is any smaller then it was before surgery. What can I do. How can I find out truthfully what was done to me. I have done the whole count calories, have joined weight watchers, I can lose 3 to 4 lbs only to gain it back the next week. I have been experiencing massive hair loss for the last 3 weeks. The last time that happened was when I was losing weight at about 5 lbs a week with the band. I'm not looking for the whole keep it up, it will happen replies or even the calories in calories out thing.. I want to know if if there are peolpe out there who have not experience any sort of change from having had the surgery. And if so, what did you do. Who can I contact to see what size my stomach is. the whole point of the sleeve was to help me portion control when I couldn't do it myself, well it doesn't. And it doesn't matter if I eat dense protien or if I eat slider foods.. HELP
  14. I also got a sleeve on Mon. the 28th. They did a revision on me from the band to the sleeve. I think I'm doing ok, I am also having trouble getting enough liquids in. I feel full so easily. Also, do you know if it is normal to feel chilled all the time unless I have a ton of blankets on. My incisions are not infected, they seem fine, I know that is a symptom of infection. I'm sore also, but nothing I can't tolerate. I can't bend over and pick up anything from the floor and I hate sleeping on my back, but it is too uncomfortable to even try. Each day I'm sure will get better...I hope!

    Drs on Mex

Hi! Would love to hear about your experience with Dr. S when you're up for it! I'm in the planning phase for LBL, inner TL, revising old arm lift (fingers crossed it can be done!), possible BL with new implants, and possibly UBL later on.

    Rescheduled!

I went in for my revision 6/10 but due to the amount of scar tissue I wasn't able to get my sleeve. That was a disappointing conversation let me tell you. In hindsight I do appreciate my surgeons caution but at the time I was sooo not happy. Today I got the call that I've been rescheduled for 8/29!! I am excited and ready to get this done!!
  17. Hi there, western medicine is all about drugs and surgery so it doesn't surprise me they would recommend a revision. It sounds like you know what you need to do and you're doing it now -- recommitting to your health following a horrific time of grief. You have tremendous determination -- I can hear it in your writing. A few days into whatever method you choose -- 5-day pouch test has always sounded interesting to me and many people do periodic liquids to reboot. You can do this and you're not alone. We are here for you. You'll be feeling so much better when you're eating clean and getting some exercise. That should help with the depression. Choose yourself and your health first, above all, and the rest will follow. Best wishes for this coming year!

Please tell me I haven't failed.

Revision: it takes a month to recover from an actual sleeve, and I have way too fast-paced a job to do that. I'd probably have to take unpaid leave or even quit the job. I can't. ESG was only a thing I could do because it had a week recovery time tops. If the sleeve had a week recovery, I'd have done that instead. Regarding vanity: They know. They have all my medical stats. They know my blood pressure is something that people aspire to, that my labs are clean as a whistle, and that I can drag a kayak a mile through choppy waters to shore or walk 10 miles straight for 3 hours. They know I have major psychological issues surrounding my body. I've seen a therapist for over a decade for in part this reason. It hasn't made me like how I look whatsoever, just helped me cope enough to have a reasonable life. I'm on several psych meds. As it stands, I have a view on this that is similar to transition. When you have gender dysphoria, people who are any kind of sane by modern science don't tell you to suck it up and go to therapy to embrace being your birth sex. They tell you to seek hormone treatments and transition, because transition works. I don't think that trying to love being fat works either. You change your body if you want to change your body. I'm going to cut back to 1000 cal/day goal and hate my life, but I guess it's something. And I mean technically I guess I have lost like 30 lbs worst case. I'm just so pissed and dismayed that I haven't gotten below pre-pandemic weight before my wedding. I want to be Internet Hot (tm) at my wedding.
  19. Oh no I'm so sorry to hear that. That is definitely upsetting news. I don't get why they wouldn't make the contact first with a phone call and explain before posting it on MyChart with no further information. I hope you get to find out sooner than later and that there is a revised plan. 🤗

    Valentine's Challenge

Challenge start 288 Last week 282 This week 279 -3 I think it might even be a tad lower then that but TMI I'm a bit 'backed up' lol So I made my challenge goal of 280! I would like to revise it to 275. I've lost 9 pounds so far with this challenge and I know ill probably hit a little stall since I've lost so much, but think 275 is doable!

    Antidepressants Post Op?

Of course the people who are posting in a "Gastric band to bypass revision" are people who had problems with the gastric band. That doesn't tell us anything about percentage of the total GB population who are/are not having problems. People who have no problems with their band are not going to see Dr. Rutledge complaining about their band, and probably are not posting in forums on revisions. The plural of "anecdote' is not "data".

    Antidepressants Post Op?

The 80% figure is based on a Swiss study in 2010, published in Lancet. I dont have the link anymore but you could probably google something like "gastric band failure rate"?If you go onto the forum section on Bariatricpal there is a section for "gastric band to bypass" you can read numerous threads from patients who have had the band and revising to bypass. I didnt want to believe it but sadly it is not a good procedure...most patients end up with hernias due to the pressure in the new small pouch...its just physics. The website of Dr Rutledge (USA surgeon) has a lot of info about band failures. He has researched it extensively and does 100's of revisions. Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App
  24. I have had my lapband since 2005. My starting weight was 230, my lowest weight was 174 (lasted about a month) and now I am at 265! My band is unfilled because I never felt full. I just felt pain when I ate (unless it was soft foods or liquids)...this was no way to live. I had a unfill and found out my port is tilted (most painful adjustment ever!!). I really want to lose weight and live a fuller life! I have been researching the sleeve and am hoping it will work for me! Any help with these questions is MUCH appreciated! -I read a lot of people saying sleeve doesnt work after having a lapband :/ is this true? I am SO scared of making a wrong choice -Is it possible to have a band and sleeve? -Why do more surgeons not offer the "net" around the stomach to help prevent stretching? -Weight loss aside; are you able to drink a small amount of alcohol (like a glass or two of wine)? -Do you feel like you get enough energy from what you eat? -Do you find yourself craving carbs or did the sleeve help kill that “I gotta have some bread and butter!!!”. Because even when I stuff myself with other foods, I still have that mental “but you didn’t have what you really wanted” feeling. -Since this is removing some of the stomach, do you feel like some surgeons are better than others? Like it’s an art? I am curious why some people fail and some succeed. Could it be the surgeons don’t remove enough stomach or do it wrong? I also ask this because I would consider going out of state (not out of country for a surgeon more experienced with lapband to sleeve. -Do you believe WLS is like breast implants, where you should prepare yourself that you may need to have “maintenance” done on it? Whether that be revision or additional surgery to correct complications? I explained to my boyfriend I always knew it was a possibility that I may need my band fixed or removed because I saw many patients with slips and port issues. -Can someone have the sleeve done 2x if they gain weight back? -My lapband surgeon is charging 22k for band removal to sleeve. Expensive! I already paid 19k out of pocket for my lapband, and it didn't work out. And I REALLY did try. This would be a 41k investment-- sigh. Many of my question stem from my fail with my lapband. Thank you for everyones replies... I have read this site over for days and finally wanted to post!

    OMG, How Crazy Am I????

DAMN! I wrote this post almost a year ago... 10 months or so. Today I went shopping for new jeans, I'm in a size 4 now. I was trying on various styles of jeans and for the FIRST time I saw it, I'm thin. I think for the first time I saw what I really look like. I had a plastics consult last week. Keep in mind, this is before today's revelation. I was standing there nek'ed with a gown draped over my shoulders while the plastics guy was peering at each hanging saggy piece of my body and I asked him how much weight I need to lose before he'll operate. He kinda stopped dead in his tracks, looked me in the eye with a funny expression and asked how much *I* thought I needed to lose. I said I didn't know, when I look at the scale (119#) my brain tells me I am done but when I look at my body I see another 35-40lbs. He carefully explained to me that he won't even consider operating on me until I gain at least 10#. He went on to explain that he wants to build a butt for me via fat injections but he has to take 500cc (1/4 of a 2 liter bottle of soda) from another part of my body and inject it into each butt cheek and I don't have 500cc of fat for one let alone two. So he will have to use implants instead. I didn't know whether to hug him or smack him for not seeing all the fat that I see. Yet today, I finally saw it. I am a thin person. I'm not seeing the "too thin" thing yet, but thin... yep. I am finally there. BTW... I had my revision surgery 3.5 weeks ago. Had my band removed and a sleeve done to replace my band and life is good once again!
