I am sorry that you have encountered many problems post-op and I wish you well. In general, the three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. How are you doing in these areas. A few years after my RNY gastric bypass surgery, I was told that my surgeon tends to make the stomach pouch a little smaller than some. This meant that I had to really adhere to the meal volume requirement. If I exceed this volume, it generally lead to dumping syndrome. My nutricianist recommended that to counteract this, I should eat more small meals per day, perhaps 5. So I was wondering if this might help in your case.

Favorite Prep-Ahead Work/School Lunches?
FluffyChix replied to AEdoesRnY's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would take 1-2 small snacks + lunch. If you are on solids: Snack 1: 1 hb egg + 1/2oz blueberries Lunch: 2-3oz dense protein + 1-2oz cooked veg + 1tbsp WF Asian Vinaigrette (or WF Sesame Ginger Vinaigrette) OR if you can 2-3oz dense protein + 1cup of mixed salad (mixed greens, peeled cucumber, rbp, red onion, radish, avocado, gr. tomatoes) + WF vinaigrette Snack 2: 1 string cheese + 1/2oz almonds +/- 1oz Granny Smith apple with or without the peel OR if you can 1 deli meat/cheese rollup with 1-2oz raw veg (baby carrots, peeled celery, cucumber, radish) + 2tbsp Lite Salad Dressing like Ranch or BC (I heart Boar's Head Reduced Sodium Lacy Swiss slices + BH blackened turkey + baby spinach or shredded cabbage and purple onions rolled up in a wrap. Then as I eat it I drizzle on WF Italian Dressing. I usually have 2-3 grape tomatoes, or 1 GT + 2-3 slices of cucs + 1-2 baby carrots.) Boom. You're done. I eat some variation of these things every day for lunch. I "might" have 1 small snack if needed in the afternoon. -
This is probably the biggest worry for me. I have osteoarthritis and tendonitis in my right shoulder. I also have some back issues. I work in a hospital and I am on my feet and in not so comfy positions for 12 hour shifts. Plus I play softball and ski in the winter. I had been on chronic NSAID's for 5 years up until my surgery. My insurance denied the lidocaine Patches (which did provide relief), but I am hoping they approve the Flector (NSAID) patches. Tylenol is an inferior medication to an NSAID, and I believe the science/research is backing that up. However, Tylenol is what we are left with. You could see your PCP and ask if they would prescribe something stronger for those times when Tylenol just won't cut it. A lot of PCP's won't have any qualms about prescribing Tramadol (pretty weak med for me personally, but better than nothing). Or maybe they could give you a small prescription for something stronger, like Hydrocodone/Vicodin. Try googling, I found some interesting info on other possible options, but I just don't know enough to even want to try explain. Best of luck.

SO Tired of Protein Drinks!
rking replied to bugsy72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hear ya sis! I have to get a lot of my Protein from Protein powder. I add unflavored to Soups, oatmeal, cream of wheat. I add vanilla to coffee. I got so tired of protein shakes too. I had ready to drink ones but my doc told me he had a lot of patients with a lot of issues with them. When I have them now, I make my own with fruit, protein powder, ice, and a little honey I do what I have to to get my protein in. Hang in there!!! -
I am three weeks out and have to say, i don't know how many more Protein drinks/shakes I can handle. I am SO tired of them! I did start pureed foods today and had four bites of a scrambled egg this morning, which was DELICIOUS. But I have to still get in two Protein shakes a day for two more weeks...ugh, ugh, ugh. I'm SO tired of them. What foods give us the most protein? I'm not there yet so haven't researched. meat? cheese? Cottage cheese? the thing is, we can't eat that much of them to rack up the grams of protein like a Protein shake, right? Sigh. Just venting.....

Taking Control of My Health...first steps
Stormie posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello! I am new to this forum. I have decided that I can’t win this weight battle on my own. I need help as I am convinced that I am doing great harm to my health. A few months ago, I knew nothing about banding. I’d heard about gastric bypass but I never really thought of myself as “that overweight” (by the way, I am) and focused on being a failed dieter. I gave up dieting. I only gained the weight back after killing myself to lose it. No more WW, Nutrisystem, Atkins, South Beach, and so on. I’d lose weight with a great deal of effort and gain it back the minute I felt a modicum of success. I learned that I was pre-diabetic about three years ago. Blood fasting sugars about 120 each day. Pre-diabetic – well heck..that’s not so bad. I mean, I am not truly diabetic I told myself. Of course today, that number has jumped to 182 some days. But still under 200! I am not REALLY diabetic! Right? Wrong! I was seeing the gastro doc because I have developed “fatty liver disease”. Isn’t that a pretty name for a disease? Hey folks, I have fatty liver disease (but remember, I am not diabetic, only pre-diabetic!). So now let’s count my co-morbidities – pre-diabetes (just had my Metformin dose increased to 4 tabs), high cholesterol, high blood pressure (just doubled that dose) and fatty liver (my daily martini has changed to an occasional glass of wine but I haven’t stopped eating like a Viking. (no offense to any Vikings out there). What a mess I’ve become. And every visit to the doctors – PCP or specialist, ends with “if you could just lose 10 lbs…” Incidentally, my BMI is 41 and I am 5’7. I wear a 20 to 22 and 1X to 2X. I am a big girl and have been for most of my 58 years though never as big as I am right now. My husband loves me no matter what size I happen to be thank goodness but I know that he wants me to live a long time and that he is worried I will not. My gastro doc mentioned that if by the next time I saw him, I did not lose some weight, I should consider surgery. I think that was the dose of reality I have been waiting for since hearing I was “pre-diabetic” a couple of years ago. This time the words were not as softened as the word “pre” softened diabetes. It was just out there. You are obese and are unable to lose weight and you will die if you don’t change things. After feeling totally shocked that he recognized that I could not fight this battle without help, I began to research my options and found myself here on this website lurking every evening and reading all of your thoughts, prayers, concerns, and successes. When I read between the lines of what you all write however, I see HOPE. You all share hope that things will be better and can be better with a little help. I’d reached the point that there was no hope anymore but now, thanks to you and my gastro doctor, I can see that even at my age, there can be a future without obesity. So, I have taken control of my health and have decided to be banded. I attended the Weight Loss Information Session at Brigham’s and Women’s in early Dec. I scheduled my consultation with Dr Ali Tavakkolizadeh for Jan 21 along with the Nutritionist that day. I have an appt with Dr. Cynthia Worth end of Jan for my weight management behavioral evaluation. I have called Aetna and learned that I am covered for 80% and that there is a 3 month and a 6 month program. I am not sure yet what the difference is between the two programs but most certainly would prefer the 3 month one. I saw my PCP last week and asked for my medical records. All of these appointments were scheduled within one day with little effort. I take it as a sign that success is in my future. Thanks for reading my story. If anyone has experience with Dr Tav, Dr Worth or Faulkner Hospital which is where Dr Tav does this surgery, please write. My thoughts are with all of you fighting this fight. -
Anyone struggling with Insomnia
kyleebean replied to kyleebean's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I CANNOT stand this. It's making me so moody and I'm so tired. I am only 2 weeks post op (from a really difficult surgery) Things are still a little tender and I have to take it easy. Walking is my only option but I live in Wisconsin and its been like 5 degrees the past two days. I did go to the gym and walk about 20 minutes on the treadmill but then I was wiped..... Would have thought I could have slept, but no. -
Hi there! It has been a long while since I have wrote on here, but since then I have been on my journey to get my Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass! I've completed my 6 months of seeing a really awesome dietitian and just today I met with my surgeon, Dr.James McGreevy! I'm still really excited about this, we're submitting the insurance claim tomorrow and hopefully it'll be approved (he seems pretty sure we will have no issues with it) and we can schedule my surgery date. However... Dr.McGreevy has said I need to be on a liquid diet for 4 weeks, starting tomorrow. Right after my appointment with him my dietitian came in and told me she doesn't think that is right and that he never tells anyone that they need 4 weeks of it...so I want to know..have any of you been told and have had to complete 4 weeks of a liquid diet before getting your gastric bypass? I've been given a sheet of all the things I can eat, which is not too much really. I was already nervous about doing this for 2 weeks, but now 4 has been very nervous....I appreciate any feedback from your experience of what your opinion on the matter is! Also as a side note, I picked up Protein powder, EAS Complete Protein, which wasn't on the list of powders they provided but looked like it had most of the same stuff and 23g of protein. However, I noticed it also has 13g of carbohydrates and I feel like that is too high. I've not opened it yet and I have about a weeks worth of Protein Powder from my dietitian so should I return it and get something else? I shop at Target, what do you recommend? I'm sorry for being so all over with my questions but I have a lot of them right now! lol

4 Weeks of pre-op liquid diet?
Jacek replied to Jacek's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey there! Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I've been pretty busy at work this last week! Since I made this post my dietitian actually gave me a call and told me she doesn't want me to start the liquid diet until we know my surgery date for sure(we're still waiting to hear back from the insurance company and I am sure they will be delayed due to the holiday), and then we'll do a two weeks full liquid diet. In the mean time, she wants me to be on a 800-1000 calorie a day meal plan. She sent me a pretty awesome meal plan with Breakfast, lunch, and dinner plotted out for each day of the week, for 4 weeks so I have quite a lot of options to choose from. I admit I got a little crazy this weekend with a bit of the "last meal" thing going on and I tell you...I think I got that out of my system because the foods I ate just made me feel awful! I'll be buckling down starting tomorrow on this meal plan to prepare for the path ahead. I didn't even think about the risks being put under can hold for being bigger like myself! Something to think of while doing this for sure. I wish you luck on your journey and it will all be sooooo worth it in the end! -
whole foods and post op diet?
moonlitestarbrite replied to moonlitestarbrite's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
thanks for your reply. plain greek yogurt has lots of protein and no crap, esp if you make your own with organic raw milk. i cant imagine why, if you are eating such small amounts, you would need supplemental protein, it just seems like a lot of people are trading one form of junk for another...... it just seems this kind of surgery is a perfect place to start loving your body with food that is truly nurturing, dont pass it up! -
Ok, I am almost three weeks post of and I must say that this is a little harder than I expected. It is easier to eat junk, (Not that I have been..although I have more than I should, but not as much as previously), why IS it easier to eat junk? I was trying to stay as low carb as possible to maximize my weightloss, but have found that as long as I have as much or more protein than carbs, it is easier. I called my dr's office today, they found me a cancellation, a week earlier than before...I so need a fill. I am excited to get this ball rolling, and get my sweet spot.

I am 4 weeks out and it took a while to eat more than a few bites of puree. I like 1/2 cup of carrots or cauliflower 1oz of milk (I use cashew but unsweetened coconut is a nice change) and 1/2 scoop of unflavored Protein powder. tuna and cottage cheese, I tablespoon of cream soup and 2oz of chicken, oatmeal 1/2 scoop Protein Powder and 2oz 1% milk. Instructions vary so check your diet sheet for allowed foods.

Ready to give up on trying to lose weight
joatsaint replied to curlychic32's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre-op diet was the toughest part of WLS for me. I had to live on low carb shakes and lean Protein - chicken breast and pork loin. The head hunger was killing me. I wish I could give you my "knowing" of what it's like on the other side of WLS. If you had it, you'd be looking forward to everyday of your pre-op diet. WLS is THAT life changing. WLS was worth every pain, hassle and sacrifice I had to make. But I did create a video with some pre-op diet tips. I hope they help ease your "adventure" in WLS. :-) Get my free eBook - The Top 10 WLS Fears and How to Kick Their Butt! -
I felt the same that first and second week out. I read that a lot of people said it was mind hunger, but it sure felt real. My suggestion is to drink water or protein when you feel the hunger pains. By the time you get to puréed foods you will feel better. I'm there now and am struggling to eat enough. I'm full all the time.

ANYTHING soft that can be pureed in a blender or w/a blender stick. Did you get a bunch of papers from your doc? There might be food ideas in there for the different stages post-op. I've got a ton of stuff from my doc. I'm still trying to go thru it all. Hang on, let me see what my paperwork says... MY doc has me on Protein shakes and drinks for the first 2 weeks. 3-4 weeks= the usual eggs of all sorts (scrambled, poached, boiled, substitute), yogurts, cottage cheeses, Peanut Butter (b/c of my band process I still can't say PB as a shortcut for the food!), low fat or part skim cheeses, dry couscous (?), skim milk, soy milk. Week 4 add: beens of all sorts, lentils, fish of all sorts, nuts of all sorts, seafood of all sorts, quinoa. He calls that his Level 2 diet. At level 3 you're heading in to week 5-6 and adding chicken/turkey first, followed by pork, beef, etc the following weeks. Definitely check your paperwork or call your doc's office or the Nut if you're working with one. Good luck!!

There are tons of protein powders out there. I think you just chose the nasty ones bcuz mine do not stink. I am not a fan of shakes though so I kno what u mean. I got my protein with eggs and cheese and atkins shakes the first few weeks. Now I'm on fish and chicken and I still use sliced cheese to add protein. Refried beans toi. -

I find it fascinating how everyone's tastes are different. I cant stand the Isopure drinks, I thought they were horrid. I do love the flavorless protein powder from Unjury. I also love Unjury chicken broth, it has 21 grams of protein per serving. -

I love the Syntrax Nectar shakes too. I still have one every morning for breakfast. Actually, I do one scoop of either the Vanilla Torte or Chocolate Truffle plus one scoop of Big Train's Fit Frappe Mocha and blenderize this with 8 ounces light soy milk and four ice cubes. 39 grams of protein... and total yummy shake WITH caffeine. -

Well I'm 30+, however, I got pregnant a year after my band. I just wanted to reassure you that the band will not interfere w/ your pregnancy. I did not require any unfills, but that is always an option if you or baby are not doing well/growing sufficiently. That's the beauty of the band-it's flexible. Good luck in your endeavors
