    Personal question

Thank you berry. I initially was considering the sleeve but have recently decided bypass will probably work best for me. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
  2. Hello, getting a revision from a band and am starting to have some questions. For a person who suffers from constipation which revision would be best the sleeve or bypass? Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
  3. I am now 1 month+ post op and wondering if I'll ever be able to eat at least close to normal again. I know the portions will be much less, but what are the Bypass Veterans eating? Can they eat lightly fried foods, noodles, sweets, chips, bread, etc. I'm not planning on eating them on a regular basis after going through all this, and I refuse to gain weight back. I would just like to know if I can have a little treat every now and then without getting sick! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  6. I am new to joining but have been keeping tabs everyday on here for the last 3 months, so I went to my Dr. and explained to her taht I was interested in getting the lap band surgery. I have a friend who just got the lap band about 4 months ago and he loves it. So I told her the Dr. I was interested in using, she told me since I have HMO I will have to see one of the Dr.'s in Straubs network first then can be referred out since the dr. I am interested in is in a different network. So I go and see a nutritionist and it comes to be that this whole appt. is about seeing a surgeon for the gastric bypass surgery what i specifically said I did not want. So I had to pary the $85 for her and a $15 co pay to see the s,urgeon who does'nt even perform the surgery nor does any dr in my network...Im so frustrated, then I recieved a letter from Straub saying that the reason for the denial os because "SERVICES AVAILABLE THROUGH THE STRAUB HEALTH CENTER NETWORK" but in the letter it also says Service: Pending Authorization. So I am so lost..Please help:help:

    Pregnancy after Gastric Bypass?

I had no problems with my pregnancy. I had rny December 2011 and had my baby November 2014. At 14 months out you should be ok. Your baby is going to get the nutrients it needs first, you second.
  9. I went with the sleeve because I did not like the thought of the absorption issues that go with the bypass. The best advice I can give you is do your homework and decide which is best for you, make an informed choice. I have had no issues what so ever with my surgery and I am quickly closing in on my goal. Go with what you are comfortable with and what your doctor thinks is best so you have the best chance of reaching your expectations.

Hair Loss after Lap Band Surgery

See this article for a full explanation... Everyone experiences hair loss on a daily basis. Normal hair loss is barely noticeable, amounting to less than 100 hairs per day. However, the stress of a major surgery can cause hair loss to accelerate up to three times as much in both men and women. It's the body's way of reacting to the trauma of the operation. The Facts During a normal hair growth cycle, hair grows, then enters into a resting or "telogen" period and eventually sheds. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, "telogen effluvium" is a term used to describe hair that has been rushed into the resting state after the body suffers a shock due to major surgery. As resources are redirected to help heal the affected surgical area, the body temporarily shuts down hair production because it is not necessary for survival. Identification Telogen effluvium related to surgery can be distinguished from other forms of hair loss in several ways. Individuals typically begin to notice the increasing hair loss two to three months after the surgery. hair loss after surgery is uniform, noticeable on the scalp but never excessive enough to cause a patchy appearance or complete baldness. In addition, the shed hairs all exhibit a specific pattern at the root, which resembles a white bulb. Time Frame Hair usually resides in the telogen phase for a period of two to four months before growth resumes. Individuals don't begin to notice the increase in hair loss when showering or brushing the hair until about three months post-surgery. Although the resting hair is being pushed out of the scalp by new hair that is already growing, it can take anywhere from about six months to a year for the hair to return to its normal fullness. Gastric Bypass Surgery Individuals who have undergone gastric bypass or other operations of the digestive tract designed to reduce obesity are more prone to hair loss post-surgery. This is due to the reduced intake of food in the weeks and months immediately following these procedures. The body needs an adequate amount of Proteins and Vitamins to maintain hair production. Protein-enhanced shakes are often recommended for these patients as a substitute until solid food can be better tolerated. Proper Diet Hair loss related to surgery typically reverses itself without any medicinal intervention or the need for over-the-counter hair loss tonics or treatments. However, maintaining a diet rich in Protein and Iron is believed to help promote and speed up healthy hair growth. Suggested foods include salmon, Beans, eggs, spinach, broccoli, nuts and whole-grain cereals. Avoid foods that can inhibit hair growth, such as those that contain high levels of caffeine and fat. 11. Hi all, I am experiencing reflux sypmtoms two years post Gastric Bypass (revision from lap band) and ultrasound didn't show anything so I now have to have an esophageal manometry and 24 hour PH test done. Both tests involve having tubes inserted up my nose and down the back of my throat, and it's causing me some anxiety thinking about having it done. I woke up with an NG tube after the surgery and having it removed was quite uncomfortable, so I'm nervous about being awake while having two seperate tubes inserted. Can anyone talk me through their experience? Did you gag/choke while they were putting the tubes in?

    Surgery aborted

Hi, sorry that you are disappointed. I had a gastric bypass on 3 March 2017 and the surgeon noticed a lot of scar tissue and tissue adhesion during the surgery. The surgery was twice as long as planned. I had to pay for my surgery, (very little is covered by the public health system in New Zealand, and private insurance doesn't cover bariatric surgery here), I'm wondering if I hadn't paid, whether the surgery would have been aborted. I have M.E. and Lupus as well. This journey has turned out to be a lot harder than I mentally prepared myself for.

    Surgery aborted

I am so sorry that you had surgery only to find out they could not do the bypass! That has to be frustrating and scary. I am sure your surgeon will have some idea of what can be done for you. Many of the reasons you listed are great reasons for having this surgery as you well know. Just hang in there and wait to talk to him. I believe that everything happens for a reason. He was trying to keep you safe. Hugs to you! I hope you feel better soon!

Sleeve revising to Bypass already feeling like a failure

Bless you dear. Sending hugs to you. Obviously you have had a difficult life. Everything was against you with significant changes in your life. Regarding your weight regain, experience can be a good teacher. This may be your secret to success this time around. Without telling you what you should do, just wanted to suggest counseling if that is something you haven't considered. Maybe dealing with the hurts that have been handed over to you could assist with some of the weight issues. I gained most of my excess weight while grieving so I can understand. I hope the bypass will go well. You sound like a good mom trying to do her best to get better for children.
  15. Hi I'm Bipolar too and kept on with my Seroquel. My bypass was extremely successful and I have never had the urge to binge or overeat. Good luck with your surgery.

    Lap Band Deaths...

I've been online since 2002 in banding communities, and I've heard of one instance where a band surgery was followed closely by death. And from what I understand, the patient ignored significant symptoms that were, in any case, the result of a surgical error (she had a leak, somehow). Under normal circumstances, banding surgery is among the safest that there is. The patient's health pre-surgery is most important, especially as it relates to the risk of general anaesthesia, but the surgery itself is no big deal at all. They're mixing up bypass and banding. No question.

Any teens who have gone through this?

I have been being pulled around for over a year. But it's all worth it because I got my date!!! November 19th!
  20. A study by David Cummings et. al. published in Diabetalogia investigated the mounting evidence indicates that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) ameliorates type 2 diabetes. 32 adults were divided into 2 groups. In the ILMI [intensive lifestyle and medical intervention] group, the individuals performed ≥45 min of aerobic exercise 5 days per week, a dietitian-directed weight- and glucose-lowering diet, and optimal diabetes medical treatment for 1 year. In the RYGB group, the individuals received Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Diabetes remission at 1 year was 60.0% with RYGB vs 5.9% with ILMI (p = 0.002). Compared with the most rigorous ILMI yet tested against surgery in a randomised trial, RYGB yielded greater type 2 diabetes remission in mild-to-moderately obese patients recruited from a well-informed, population-based sample. http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00125-016-3903-x I am almost 3 years post-op RNY surgery. I had Type 2 diabetes and took 2 types of medication prior to surgery. When I left the hospital 2 days after surgery, my diabetes went into remission and I went off my meds. It has stayed in remission ever since. Many individuals on this website report similar results. But a few don't. From prior posts, one of the variables for success appears to be the length of time the individual had diabetes prior to surgery. So one of the interesting points of this study is: The groups were equivalent regarding all baseline characteristics, except that the RYGB cohort had a longer diabetes duration (11.4 ± 4.8 vs 6.8 ± 5.2 years, p = 0.009).
  21. Sleeve like bypass is permanent and much bigger surgery which equals bigger risks. The thought of having my stomach butchered and intestines rerouted just didn't appeal to me.
  22. If I were wanting to do this more economically I would consider Bariatric Pal MX and. Dr Illian. Although there are doctors in Texas, Louisiana, Michigan and Florida that are more budget-friendly, Alex Brecher will be having his revision to Mini Bypass at Bariatric PalMx, and it isn't because of economic issues because he could afford any US or Canadian surgeon. He knows the staff there and trusts them with his own health. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Discouraged. 3 weeks post op.

I am 8 weeks post bypass and the losses have been a bit unpredictable. I came out of hospital about 8lbs heavier than when I went in. I had a lot of fluid and had to wait for that to go. The first month I lost 36lbs but I stalled between weeks 2-3. I just stuck with the plan and eventually it started moving. Since surgery I have been back in hospital twice for other things and had a different surgery and BAM full of fluid again! That one is just starting to go and I have two more surgeries coming up. I think this month might be a bust. Considering all the stops and starts since 2 week liquid diet to now (10weeks) I have lost just under 60lbs happy with that. The dietitian gives me the plan I follow it whether I'm stalled it not and just trust the process Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

Abdominal Pain - 13 years post op

You should get checked out by your doc. In the meantime, if the pain becomes severe, go to the ER, since it could be a bowel obstruction or hernia. Recently there was a bypass patient that had to get surgery for a Petersen's defect. It is a fairly rare complication of the bypass, and it can happen anytime postop (even 13 years). Hopefully it's nothing, just some constipation, but better safe than sorry...
