    Any December 2021 bypass people?

    Hi! Just got the Rouen xy gastric bypass on December 7th last week. Got home on Friday the 10th and doing great. I am off pain meds for 2 days now. I do have a pain that comes and goes under my left breast. But it's manageable and only for an hour or so a day. Hardest part is I can't eat what I want it's make me so sad. But I did this beacuse my blood pressure before was regularly 175/115 Have a wife and 4 kids so I want to be around. For them!! SW -358 CW after 5 days -344 Goal weight 200 pounds. I'm 6 feet tall.

  3. So happy you’ve been having a positive experience through this & have such a supportive team behind you. So many don’t unfortunately. My bariatric surgeon also drew pictures. The GP I had years ago was the first I encountered who drew pictures & diagrams to explain things better. The best. Taught me how to ask the right questions of all my subsequent doctors & surgeons. All the best for your revision surgery.
  4. Those you describe (cramping, painful, and makes all sorts of noises( gurgling, sounds like growling) are not hunger signals. Hunger signals are totally different post surgery than they may have been prior to surgery. Just keep up with your protein and fluids on schedule and you'll be fine. If you have insatiable craving, have a 1/4 C of fat-free Greek yogurt. If you are consuming a brand of yogurt with fruit that contains sugar, you may be getting cravings because of the sugar. The sooner you go sugar-free fat-free the better off you will be. I'm surprised that your surgeon opted for the sleeve knowing that you have reflux. Gastric bypass usually resolves reflux and GERD.

    I started taking birth control pills the week before my surgery. I had gastric bypass 2.5 weeks ago. I am thinking of switching to the arm implant because of the malabsorption for gastric bypass. I don’t know if I can trust my husband to exit the premises at the right time. Lol!!!!

    I had gastric bypass 4 days ago still on clear liquids until the 22nd I'm still in some pain this is so different from the sleeve I had 2 years ago. I'm not hungry cuz I'm tired of broth I'm getting my protein in as much as I can. If I knew 2years later after my gastric sleeve that I would have to have this bypass surgery I don't know If I would have done it.   7. Hi Karen, I had RNY Gastric Bypass in 1990, which failed after 6 months. I had lost about 75 lbs when I stopped losing. I regained it over the next 7-8 years, returning to my high set point of around 315 lbs, where I stayed for over 20 years despite frequent diets. I did not know that a revision was possible until just before the pandemic hit. My revision will include reducing the size of the pouch and anastomosis, separating the stomach (which was not done 30 years ago), and removing most of the fundus of the remnant stomach. The protocols and techniques have much improved over the years. I've been in my bariatric clinic's program for 7 months and am scheduled for revision surgery on December 21. In the meantime I've been on a high protein/low carb liver reduction diet, cutting out all sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, and processed food. it's been very successful, but I'm going ahead with the revision because I'm still over 100 lbs overweight. I don't expect to achieve a "normal" BMI, but should get out of the morbid obese category. My surgeon thinks I can lose another 60 lbs. (I'm hoping for more.) I had never heard of a "minimizer ring". but it looks sort of like a "lap band" technique which is rarely done in the US anymore. I don't think the minimizer ring is used by surgeons here. Have you had an EGD yet to determine the state of your pouch and anastomosis? That would determine if you are a candidate for that procedure.
  8. I had my gastric bypass in 2000, I was one of the first to do it in the UK. 21 years later and some non weight related illness I have regained half of the weight I lost. I was 300lbs and went to 140lbs. It's only in the past 5 years the regain has really started. I am looking at having a minimizer ring fitted. Has anyone here done this? What was the outcome. Is it like day one after your original surgery? Any information would be greatfully received. Thanks x

  10. yes!  I'm 63 (will be 64 in March).  I had my bypass August 11.  So far have lost 70 lbs and I feel 200% better.  I was in so much pain walking, moving around, even sleeping I don't think I realized it until the weight started to come off.  I get around so much easier and have more energy.  Sometimes the weight loss seems to be VERY slow, but I was warned by my surgeon that I would only lost 6 to 8 lbs a month (after that initial period), so I knew what to expect.  I have started to notice some hanging skin in areas  - my upper arms and the backs of my thighs which is a little spooky, but I wouldn't trade how I feel for anything.  Hope it's going well for you!

      Glad to hear it's helped with the aches and pains involved with getting older! I hope to get a date In January-I have one more appointment before I can start to nag them, lol. The only other thing I worry about is time released meds. I was told that those would shoot through my system without being absorbed. Have you heard anything similar?

      I had to crush several meds - for high triglycerides and high cholesterol. I take a thyroid supplement and 10mg lisinopril for high blood pressure (which I don't think I have anymore, actually!). So I hope at my next doctor's appointment they'll do away with the blood pressure med and maybe the cholesterol ones too. Basically they just told me if the medication (pill) was large I'd have to crush it. I've been discouraged because the weight loss REALLY slowed down. I essentially plateaued all of February, and just in the last 2 weeks started to lose again. I've lost 85 lbs since the surgery. I want to lose 50 more! Good luck! Keep posting!

  11. Hello, wondering who much you gained in 11 years? I am also 11 years post-op VSG, I have regained 40lbs however the GERD is just so bad every day I did not know you could get a revision to fix that. Thank you!
  12. I was 47 when I had RNY gastric bypass twelve years ago. There was no "honeymoon" period where the pounds melted away for me. I do not believe this was age related because my surgical peers at the time lost weight at about the same rate as younger women. Nonetheless, I exceeded my surgeons goal and have maintained this with a lot of difficulty. An autoimmune disorder, hypothyroidism and medications are to blame for an average loss of less than half a pound weekly. Watching the scale go down and up then repeat was frustrating but I had a good experienced surgeon who also had the same procedure. The metabolically challenged as he put it need to stay on plan even when it seems there is no progress. Not what I wanted to hear at the time. I was angry and beginning to have regrets but a good support network "talked me off the ledge". After a year of following the rules I made changes to my doctor's plan. Using information from the body building community I Incorporated eating practices used to increase lean muscle mass. None conflict with the needs of gastric bypass patients. I researched options I believed could serve me better. At 17 months post op I made my desired maximum weight. I'm still pushing to get 5lbs lower. I deliberately left out the numbers. Not because it's a secret, I've posted this info in the past. Some individual readers may distinguish between weight/BMI classifications then rate difficulty and speed of weight loss to evaluate "success". That is not the point of my reply. Also, I make no claim to post op diet perfection nor do I blame metabolism for my obesity. No matter where you start at any age you will need to work your plan. You may work hard and see only small results as you watch surgical peers break their surgeons rules and do well. Further, you will likely have to make Healthful adjustments to augment your progress based on your needs. I've met many success stories since I committed to surgical intervention and I'm in good company. Today my weight is 30lbs up because of steroids, hypothyroidism, and binge eating disorder. It was 40lbs up a few weeks ago. Age is not the only issue in my struggle but "I Got This". This is one of a few episodes of rapid fat gain. I'm not talking about pounds and Water weight. You will not hear me say I've gained my weight back. What I've put on is fat but it's not mine and I'm not keeping it. I've learned how to "re lose" body fat and curb weight gain in spite of menopause and other factors. There is no secret to my maintenance. Never buy a larger size, period. Clothing measurement, not size number is my guide. I avoid stretch fabrics when I can without sacrificing style. I also monitor my body fat percentage. Formulas used by the YMCA and the military are easy to find. Ten years plus post op forced me to figure this out. A support network even before your procedure can help you learn what you need for the long term. If you have access to counseling or mental healthcare take advantage of it. Many of us with recently recognized mental health concerns like binge eating disorder and compulsive over eating do not know these illnesses exist. They can even be incorporated into a healthy post op eating plan with your nutritionists blessing. The more you know about why you are obese the easier and more successful your maintenance plan will be. Yes, I said maintenance plan. You asked for post op support but You WILL Succeed. We all find our way here because we want to be well and we all can be. I've included what I wished I knew pre op. This process is emotional as well as physical. Every pound lost is joyful but for some even a week with no change feels devastating. Get ready for the highs and lows knowing will be the Winner. Some famous writer somewhere is quoted as not having had the time to be conscise. For me include spell checking and grammar too. You have my story and I hope it's helpful. All the best!

  15. Man, I can't believe there's another guy with an MGB here! Thanks for posting, too. So here's what I've experienced: at 6 months or so, you start definitely having 'room' for more food - that feeling of complete satiety you feel now starts sloooowly waning. But at the same time, your body starts sending you clear signals it wants protein and veggies - and sometimes something quicker to burn, because you've dipped too low in calories. At least that's how my body talks to me, still. Google "post gastrectomy syndrome". It's kinda how we work. You get steered to something that looks like a Mediterranean diet, and your hunger will tell you if you've had enough. No hunger - stick to plan; more hunger - eat a little more, you're too low. It's very noticeable. My body wanted to stay at exactly 93.5 kg for a good while. On mornings of 93.2, I'd be hungry. Mornings on 93.8, not hungry at all. Then it decided 90ish was probably more to its taste, lost 2.2 kg/5 lbs in literally a week, just three weeks ago. Out of nowhere. Now that's where it wants to be. Again, you won't doubt the signals, that's one of the beautiful features of specifically MGB - the connection between eating and hormonal response is SUPER quick and 1:1. This might make more sense in 5 months or so, but just follow your plan, and let's talk when you get to that point. Final important thing for all MGB'ers (and maybe others, I don't know): you'll probably think "ok this is it" a lot during the journey. Hunger returns, you're having a hard time sticking to your calorie limit etc. But then it re-starts when the body is ready and it's super easy. And so on. I've had 6-7 of such start-stop experiences, and some day soon, it'll be the last. And that's fine. I'm at a good weight now. What I wanted to say: don't stress. You've got a great surgery. I felt completely normal at your stage, too - just satiated all the time Edit: just out of curiosity, how long is your bypass? Mine is 220 cm / 7.2 feet.

    Feel full - No Hunger - Still eat?

    I definitely understand wanting to 'get more out of it' by not eating, it's so freeing finally not feeling food controls you, right? However, we need calories to function. Regardless if we feel hungry or not. For many of us, 'hunger' has been messed up for years and years due to social, mental, physical pressure to not eat because we were too heavy. I would eat something, even if you feel full* Once you've got a structured, predictable routine set for eating, you can start making little changes to accommodate your life and preferences (preferably with expert guidance from your team). For now, it's early days, and your body needs something to work with. ---- *Note to sleevers: bypass patients feel full not (/not just) from having a full pouch, but because food bypassing part of the intestine releases fullness hormones quicker. It seems the effect wanes over time for RNY'ers. However, your guidance to not eat if you feel full doesn't always apply to us, and especially not for someone 10 days out from RNY.

    This surgery is bullshit...

    I think some people reacted strongly because of OP stating “this surgery is bullshit”, which is a pretty bold statement and runs counter to many of our experiences. This surgery isn’t appropriate for a number of people who get it, certainly. Some surgeons are lazy or greedy and push people through who aren’t mentally prepared to make the necessary changes. But that doesn’t make the surgery itself bullshit. If you aren’t planning on making any changes to your life, and don’t want to track (be it calories, protein, water) I honestly don’t recommend it. I’ve had some friends tell me confidently that they plan on getting surgery and eating exactly as they are now, but relying on portion control that the surgery provides. I cringe, because it’s so easy to bypass the restriction with snacking, eating calorically dense food, etc. OP, what’s done is done. I wish for your sake you could go back and reverse the surgery, but you can’t. I hope you can find a way to move forward and either use your surgery to lose further, or find a way to live eating the way you want without regard to weight loss. I’m sorry that your surgical team failed you- you deserved more support than you got.
  18. I'll toss my name in here, too. I had VSG in 2013, lost 140 lbs and GERD started a couple years later, during my first pregnancy. I'm revising to RNY and having a hiatal hernia repaired on 12/16, so I'm on day 8 of liquids.   19. My RNY to RNY revision surgery will be December 21, assuming COVID doesn't throw a monkey wrench into the plans. I've been on a high protein/low carb Liver Reduction Diet for 7 months. I started with a two week full liquid diet to see if I could do it. The joke is on me: this clinic doesn't prescribe it. I will have to do two days of clear liquids for two days prior to surgery,1 day post-surgery, then full liquids for7 days, followed by 2-3 weeks of soft food, then gradually introducing "real" food.
  20. You might check with Dr. Victor Gonzalez in Dallas. (Medical Center Dallas on Forrest) He's who I just used for revision surgery. If it is medically necessary, it just is. He's a good surgeon. I had a sleeve to RNY revision almost two weeks ago.

    Clear liquids post-Op for 7 days?

    I had revision surgery due to severe reflux. I got RNY two weeks ago this Friday. Yes, the day after Thanksgiving is when I did it. Ugh! I haven't had ANY reflux since surgery. I've moved on to smashed refried beans with no problems, but I'm supposed to be on a clear liquid diet of protein and broth for two weeks. Full liquids (no bumps or lumps), cream soups, milk and everything on the clear liquid diet.

    Sick all the time

    So I am just barely 7 months in my gastric bypass. I am actually beside myself. I am unable to eat pretty much anything. All meats or textured foods that I put to my lips, I actually start throwing up. My diet consists of broth... There might be an occasional cooked, really cooked carrot ,celery maybe onions. I developed a hernia and that was just repaired. My surgery has left me weak and malnutrition. I've lost 89 pounds and 7 months. I have a numbing from my legs to my boobs. I am looking for help, or any Ideas as to why? My surgeon advised me that it was all psychological. How when I wanna eat so badly. If there is anyone with some insight or ideas of what I might be doing wrong please.... I need help!
  23. it's pretty standard for surgeons to prescribe PPI's for awhile after surgery. I had them for a year - but three-six months seems more common now (probably because of the bad rap long-term PPI use has gotten the last few years). so you just now got a lapband? Or did you have one before and this was a revision surgery? I was just a little surprised because that very few surgeons place lapbands any more - it's been largely replaced by the sleeve (as the non-RNY option)

    Revision from sleeve to bypass

    I’m almost 16 months out from revision. I had VSG to RNY revision due to GERD 8 months after my VSG because of a hiatal hernia of almost my entire sleeve. The protonix after surgery made the GERD worse until I stopped taking it and I was great after. As for food tolerance after revision I couldn’t eat eggs or chicken for almost a year but handled egg substitutes well. I also still can’t eat cucumbers which is a bummer because I love them. Some days I still can’t eat more than a few bites of things and other days It seems like I can’t eat enough. I do experience dumping sometimes but it’s a random thing that happens even if I’ve eaten the food before so there’s no rhyme or reason to it.
  25. I had sleeve to bypass revision on 11/29/2021. The first day and the second day in the hospital I had a GERD episode. It’s still early postop but I haven’t felt it anymore. I pray it’s all fixed. That was the reason for the surgery.
