    Scars!

So many variables when it comes to scaring. Before you concern yourself if the scar is going to turn white, you must be concerned on the initial incision to begin with. Since you are asking this on a plastic surgery board I am assuming you are asking about PS scars. Let's talk arms for a minute, I have seen surgeries where the arms were done incorrectly and the scars spread and widen horribly. So more important than when will they turn white, (which they will in time if the incision was done correctly), but having the right surgeon do the job to begin with. My first surgeon who did my breast lift, simply folded a little extra skin and sewed it up under the breast leaving a bulky scar that never completely turned "white" like the rest of the other scars but still remains raised and pinkish in color. After having that bad outcome I went looking for a surgeon who was known for his fine incisions and sewing. My lower body lift turned out beautifully, the scars are very thin and I have no doubt they will continue to heal perfectly to that fine while line which is almost unnoticeable. So I would have to say the important part to having that fine white line besides all the after care such as using silicone strips etc, is finding the most perfect surgeon you can. A great outcome all starts with the right surgeon.

    My Lb Journey

Hello, this is my first entry. I am 39 years old and was banded on 12/2/2011. I have been struggling with my weight for the last 8 years with a steady BMI of 34. I could no longer control my eatting habits and the weight was just not leaving the way it used to. I am married; however, I only told one person I was being banded; and she did not understand why. I didn't want to hear the criticism from anyone. I prayed about my decision and this was a personal choice. My husband of 14 years does not understand - he does not feel anyone should have surgery to loose weight. He believes you should be able to do it with mere will power. Needless to say, the first couple of days was challenging but I am now 17 days post op and no one have a clue that I have had the surgery. I was sore for the first 2 days (the pain medicine was awesome) and I told my family I was on a liquid diet thus is the reason why I was not eating.

    Newbie - Surgery scheduled 10/13/08

OK - I am starting to freak out. I got a call today from one of the ladies in Dr. C's office making sure I was going to be there for my pre-op testing tomorrow and she asked me how I was doing on the pre-op diet. I told her fine, that I was having three shakes, lots of water and one meat with veggies for dinner. Apparently the Weightwise clinic that I go to has a different diet than Dr. C - his apparently is only 2 shakes and a small amount (palm size) of meat. I am FREAKING out. She asked me how many pounds I have lost and I told her 7 pounds (in 1 week). She said that most patience loose 15-20 in the two weeks. When they called me about my surgery date, it was only 12 days away so I will only have been on the diet for 12 days. She also said that I would probably be okay but that Dr. C wouldn't know for sure until he started the surgery. YIKES. That will be really BAD. i have already taken off work. ANY COMMENTS?????
  4. Yea I know it is the right thing.. I am also scared I won't loose weight, but if we do what we are suppose to it would be impossible. Email me and I will let you know how I do ok? Bev

    Incision ?'s

I was banded on Dec. 29th and was put on antibiotics for the two days I was in the hospital after the surgery. My port incision was very painful, very tender and very swollen. After five days I the area started to change to a redish color and the texture of the skin started to look like the one of the orage peel. I called the Dr. and first they told me to start taking iboprufen 800mg every six hours. His nurse called me a few minutest later to tell me that the surgeon wanted to see me the next day. I went and he look at it and didn't seem concerned. I am concerned because I had an infection with both of my C-sections and the first one was really really bad. He prescribed antibiotics and the same day I started taking them the pain was gone. I have to take them for seven days and the port site seems to be better. It still has that weir texture but the rednes has diminish. I just hope that it doesn't get worse.
  7. So this week I went to my surgeon for my 3 month post op visit. 3 months!!! ALREADY! Wow, I cannot believe how fast the time goes when you are so focused on a goal! So, I went there and first off got weighed by the nurse. She says to me, "Wow, you are down another 26.3 pounds since the last time we saw you just over a month ago!" So I tell her about the hair loss and the little bit of worry that I have about the loose skin, and she gives me some fliers about what other Vitamins I can be taking for the hair loss (BY THE WAY, ANY ADVICE IN THIS AREA WOULD BE GREAT!!!). She then tells me to ask the Dr. about the skin and what he thinks. So the Dr. comes in a few minutes later. Says to me, "Hello, Kim. I'll tell you, you used to look like someone I would perform surgery on, but not anymore!" So I smile and turn beat red (i'm sure) and then he looks at the chart again and says, "Kim! Do you realize you have lost 90 pounds in 4 months!?! NO ONE has ever lost that much that fast in our program!" Thats when it hit me. I have officially "lost" my 12 year old niece. WOW! Now for the bad news... My hair is 1/2 gone. Thank goodness I had a really thick head of hair to start or I would be bald by now. It's horrible! Every time I touch my head I loose a whole hand full of hair. I am really starting to worry about it but don't know what kind of vitamins to invest in so that it at LEAST slows down. HELP!!!! More bad news: I'm on another stall. I wanted to start the new year off in Onederland. I haven't lost in over 2 weeks. I am 10 pounds from Onderland and am stuck. Go figure. I just hope I can be within 5 pounds of Onderland at least by the New Year. Over all, I am happy as a lark and LOVING my new life! Thanks to the surgeon, their wonderful staff, and the sleeve I am happier than I have been in a very very long time. I finally feel good about myself and therefore am able to tackle the everyday things that used to tax me to even think about. I don't have a lot of full body pictures to post but I do have just a few to share. The first two pics is from a wedding I was in this last June (5 months ago). The last three were taken just this week. I will do my best to find some full body pictures this week and get them posted. ONDERLAND HERE I COME!!!!!!

March 25th bandsters - check in

Hey Michelle! I was down 8 pounds at 2 weeks. I haven't weighed myself since. (I plan to tomorrow). Good - I have lost some weight. I am eating much better. I am starting to exercise a little. I have only a few aches from time to time. My first fill is 5/7. Bad- I am suppose to still be on liquids. (mostly I am, but I eat some pureed and soft stuff) My appetite is coming back. I am terrified to eat much more than the liquids because I don't want to gain any weight. Actually, I feel pretty good. I only get an occasional pulling on my left side. I am pretty much back to my regular routine, except I still won't lift anything over 10 pounds. (I had a hernia repair and the last thing I want is another one!) The weight isn't coming off like it seems to on others, but I guess even if I loose 10 pounds a month, that is 120 pounds in one year!
  9. Conceiving was one of my most important concerns with getting banded. Actually it was one of my MAIN reasons, among being healthier...to get banded. Being severely obese.. and needing to lose lots of weight before safely, being able to try for another child... I had my daughter when I was 325..lost some gained some... that was 4 years ago. I wasnt at a healthy weight then..it was rough. I talked to my doctors, surgeons... lapband specialist.. they ASSURED me.. that this was totally safe ( they just release the fluids through adjustment so you can get the nutrition you need during pregnancy. ) Pregnancy can happen safely, and shouldn't be feared after banding! I just got banded a week ago.,. and im looking forward to loosing weight so I can do the same!
  10. I was banded in early Nov and quickly lost 28 lbs by the end of Dec...all with an empty band. Currently, I can eat anything I want...rice, Pasta, bread...just enjoy these foods in smaller amounts. I feel like I'm eating like a "thin" person already. My old Breakfast was 2 eggs, bacon, hashbrowns & a bagel. Now its 1 egg, 1 turkey sausage link and 1 slice of toast...maybe even alittle potatoes. I'm still losing but of course at a much slower rate but I'm hoping I won't have any sagging skin issues by doing it slow. Also, I can still enjoy going out to eat and I'm not afraid of any "stuck" issues. (HATE to throw up!!) At times I wish I can see a big jump on the scale but I know that this is for a lifetime...not just right this minute. With this all said...I only got 1cc fill on 12/28. Didn't feel any difference. My doctor said to see how much I lose in 4-6 weeks and that's when we can decide on another small amount or maybe a 1.5cc fill. Hope everyone has a great year! Jo

    My first NSV

I love NSVs!!! I put on a shirt that was pretty tight when I bought it and it was actually loose. This weekend I worked my EMS job and I actually needed a belt to hold up my pants, not just a place to hang my radio, my shirt was also way looser than it was previously. I also had to take my Apple Watch band down another notch too. Definitely getting there!!
  12. I weighed 432. It's been 9 months, I've lost 99 pounds I average 10 pounds a month consistantly, my surgeon was very optimistic about me loosing 200 pounds... I'm not quitting till I see Onederland. He said a lot of people loose 50 pounds and then they think "Gee, I've done a great job" and they get a little lax on following the "plan". I feel confident that if I can keep up my dedication I will see Onederland!!!

    Port area ache

There is no way to know if the port is oozy once the scar has healed. The way you might know if you have an infection at your port is based on pain, inflammation at the area, redness on your skin surface. The only time you would spot oozing is if your scar was still in the healing process and you were experiencing oozing out of the scar. Hope that helps.
  14. Hi all, I had to update my pic so I could show ya'll. I have cheekbones again!!!!! Surgery was on the 25th and I lost 12 pounds the first week, so that makes 16 total with pre-op measly 4 pounds. I can only see it in my face as yet and my hands since my wedding ring is really loose now. (angling for mo betta sparklies soon) Now you know why I'm smiling so big in my pic! lol xoxox:bounce:

    Wrinkles

I have, actually! However, I'm also approaching 26, and your skin starts to age and lose elasticity around 25, so I don't know how much of it is from VSG and how much from just normal aging. I'm mostly getting a lot of fine lines under my eyes and on my forehead.

    Drainage Bag

OMG.. a lanyard is genius! I thought that the little drain bag had to be lower than the opening in the skin.

    Very Cold

Oh yes, I bought lots of sweaters and scarves recentely. I hated wearing jackets and coats before. Now I have grown to like them because I am always freezing. My hubby said I no longer have that layer of fat to keep me warm lots of skin and bones now.

    P90X Post OP?

Yes- where are you thinking of getting the tattoo? I have several and always picked areas where I felt the skin changed the least like the back of my neck, ankle, and wrist. My opinion if it were me would be to wait if it is somewhere where you carry your weight.

    Pre-Op Diet

So my original goal was to be at 250 on surgery day (even if butt naked!). So if I have basically 4 1/2 days until surgery I could loose 10 lbs?! My problem is that I don't HAVE to do the pre-op but for 2 days--mushies on Tuesday and liquids on Wednesday. I have good intentions of doing the liquid diet, I try to start it then get hungry and tell myselt that I don't have to do it right now. But I would LOVE to meet my goal for Thursday. I am starting a colon cleanse today, that helped me get to the 255 for my last doc appt. (we wont tell anyone that I gained back 5 from my many 'last suppers'. ) I'll let you know if I make it to goal for surgery day. :blushing:
  22. I'm 4 1/2 months post op and had a wonderful Thanksgiving- 3 oz. of turkey breast ( no skin, no gravy),steamed green Beans that I had to bring myself just for me since we had green bean casserole, and a butterscotch Protein pudding for dessert. No stuffing, no mashed potatoes, no bread, no casseroles, no pie, and no vino! I didn't feel like I missed out on anything. I had a great workout in the morning on Thursday and another one on Friday morning. One holiday down, two more to go!
  23. Well, I've survived a year, lol. What an amazing journey it's been. I've learned so much. The support on the board is great. I'm on here every day reading what going on. Chiming in if I can. Thank you to all of the vets. You rock. To summarize my highest weight I ever saw (around 2004) was 265. I was 224 when I started my WL program and just under 200 the day of surgery. (In the attached photo I think I was around 225). I reached my goal weight of 138 three weeks ago. I am now 135. I imagine I'll stop losing soon. I get 80-100 grams of Protein a day. I exercise 4-5 days a week. (Walking, biking, resistance). I also golf, and swim, amongst other things. I enjoy running, but my knees don't. So I'm working on it. I'm 52 and feel like I'm 20. This is the best thing I've done besides marry my husband of 30 years and have our amazing son. ???? They've been my biggest supporters. My major health issues have resolved. No more metformin. Normal A1C. Down side is loose skin (yes, I am pursuing plastic surgery). Also developed acid reflux. That's a trade I can handle. I wonder if I had it all along. My butt and boobs are gone...MIA. One will get fixed...you can guess, lol. My words to live by...life is short, so get your butt out there and LIVE it. Really SHOW those that you love that you love them. That includes yourself.
  24. SW: 300 / CW: 169.8 I’m down only about 8lbs from my last surgiversary but that’s ok I never thought I’d hit onederland, much less maintain 165-170lbs at 5’11” for a year! The past two years haven’t been exactly what I’ve expected—for example, I’m not suddenly in love with what I see in the mirror, still have a long way to go mentally—but this surgery gave me my life back. I was one of the luckier ones who went into this with no comorbidities so my health is about the same as it was but my quality of life is so vastly improved. Next stop: hopefully getting some of this skin removed I haven’t been super active during maintenance but I just wanted to say thank you to everyone here who’s offered support and advice!
