Its impossible to guess - I have a girlfriend who's the same height and weight as I am and she's 2 sizes smaller than me! She has huge legs - no ankles, no knees, just tree trunk legs. That's where all her weight is. Mine is round my hips and lower tummy and I have boobs, she doesnt. So I can fit into an Australian 16 and she's an Australian 12. It depends ENTIRELY on your body type. I have wide hips, no matter how skinny I get I'll still be a larger size than somebody who doesnt.

Hi Fairydust. sorry that your weight loss isn't going to plan and great idea to turn to this forum for some help. I know you are intending to see a dietician but in the meantime, why not keep a food diary and post up a typical days eating so we can spot any obvious flaws in what you are eating now. I am early days with my band and am not fully restricted yet (only one fill so far) but I have steadily lost weight since my pre op diet in August I am down 52lbs. I follow the weight watchers plan as i have always lost weight with it, although pre band ended up putting it back on. I keep a daily food diary to help me keep on track. Sue

A food journal is a very good idea. Sometimes we get it into our heads that we didn't eat much on a certain day when we've actually just grazed all day and the calories add up whether you sit down for 3 meals or eating standing up throughout the day. Also, try not to weigh yourself more than once a week. If you weigh yourself every day, your weight can go up and down by several pounds like a yoyo. Don't let that scale become your enemy. I'll bet you 'feel' like you're losing weight even though the scale isn't saying so. This is a journey. We didn't put this weight on in a few days and it's going to take more than a few days to take it off. If you're doing everything right, then the weight will come off. Just have patience . .

For insurance to pay for my banding, I have to get a referral from a general doctor to do this. Did anyone else have to do this, and how hard was it? Most of my dieting has been on my own. My doctor did give me Phentermine for a couple of months a couple of times but it was awful. I was really hyper but I feel high all the time and it made me unstable emotionally. I've always been fine emotionally but it messed me up horribly while I was on it. I'm a bit worried that my doctor may not referr me since my diet attempts have been on my own. I know a 'doctor assisted' diet won't any better. Any weight I lose will just come back. When I diet I usually lose about 10 or so pounds then gain it back over the next few months as I cant stay on a diet any longer as I seem to platue and I'm miserably hungry. I eat too much. I'm 23 and have tried losing weight so many times. I've tried Atkins for 6 months and lost 20 pounds but I couldn't stay on it and gained most of it back over the next few months. That was my most successful weight loss attempt. My highest adult weight was 300 and my lowest is 280 which I am now. Any suggestions on things to say to the doctor to help him realize that this is for me? My doctor is associated with my insurance so I'm worried they may try to avoid surgery if they can since that will cost them more... I have high blood pressure, Multiple Sclerosis, and diabetes and heart problems run in my family. From my point of view it seems pretty obvious that this is something I need to get and will be in my best interest. Thanks!

I just bought Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, which is really good. The author is a doctor and also a bandster. I highly recommend it! I also have Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies, which is interesting, and good if you're just starting to research WLS. It has a lot about GB as well as banding.

You have had to focus on fighting cancer rather than weight loss. I am glad you are almost at the finish line in terms of the cancer. I don't understand why your doc. thinks your in the green zone when your hungry all the time. Maybe give your doc. clear data on what your eating and how long your staying satisfied. Best wishes!

How Much Are You Exercising??
TKW replied to Bamabander's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never exercised before the band. I started out walking on a treadmill at the gym then went to the elliptical. I just changed gyms a couple of months ago because I got bored with it and there were no classes offered at the hospitals fitness center. Now I do all sorts of things. Zumba, Body Pump, Water Aerobics and the elliptical still sometimes. On the average I do about 7 hr's of cardio a week and I will say it has, without a doubt, helped in my weight loss. -
I have journaled every day since the beginning of my six-month pre-op diet program on March 21, 2016. I have a record of what I ate each day, musings about the journey at least once per week, a weekly weight on Mondays (sometimes weights on other days when I hit a milestone), a list of milestones and when they were accomplished, and pictures at every stage along the way. I keep everything in a word doc on my computer. It is over 150 pages now! I have mostly kept it to myself, but some of my loved ones have looked at it on my computer. I'm toying with the idea of doing something with all of it when I reach my goal, but we'll see if I have that much ambition! :-)

My lapband was placed January 2016 so just over a year ago and I've lost 5 pounds. I easily have 80 more to lose and I'm feeling discouraged. I feel tightness in my chest when I eat but have a hard time feeling full or satisfied. I've had my band a little tighter than it is now, then got a defill cause I wasn't keeping much food down. I just feel discouraged... I thought this would be the answer for me. I do track my food but I'm more hungry than I expected to be (could just be emotional hunger) but I find it way too easy to eat sugar. Just wondering if anyone has had a slow start then found success? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Went in today for another adjustment. The NP added .5cc. Total 6.2cc out of 10cc. Feel good. What's really nice is that we were away on vacation for a week and I still managed to lose a few lbs. Down 79 lbs. Buying large shirts and size 38 pants. Feels great. Trying to get in my walking every day. I did notice with all the weight loss the port is starting to protrude. If it becomes an issue, they'll move it deeper under the stomach muscle. It's a wait and see approach but I do not want it to protrude.

I have lost like 1000 lbs in the last 20 years. I am 53 and this battle has gone on forever. Since the lap-band was installed I am ready and willing to keep the weight loss going. I did take a holiday there for a year or so. Now I am ready to go forward. I have lost a normal size person, and I have another person to go, LOL:eek: . But, I am ready to do the work. I think it took that year off to get my head right, it ain't all in the eating. For some reason I was not ready to be a normal size, today I am. Well................... at least I think so.......LOL. Thanks for the thought, and it's nice to know that the end is in sight. Peace. Butch

Hi Maddie, A three week stall is a long time. I know you're frustrated! You're just now six weeks out, so you are starting on 'everything'. Carbs can bring you to a halt fast depending on what you are eating. To kick start a plateau, I'd always up my Protein and Water, do a little exercise and it worked like a charm every time. Protein for me was normally 60 - 65 and I'd go to 70 - 80. My calories when I was where you are were between 500 and 650 per day...and I did good to get that much in. During my losing period I averaged 675 per day. I had great restriction, I still do. I call cottage cheese, the Breakfast of champions, I love it. 1% of course. Eggs; steamed shrimp (i keep a bag on hand for lunch), tuna, I measure 2 TB of lite mayo for a can; whatever meat you want at night; stay away from bread, rice, Pasta, all sweets, nothing until you reach goal; chips; if it's in a bag or a box....chances are, you shouldn't have it!!! The exception, Special K Crackers, a few with tuna rather than bread are ok - recommended by my dietitian. They even have a little Fiber. I have two glasses of skim milk per day. I get liquid and 16 grams of protein, killing two birds with one stone, so to speak!! Greek yogurt, the plain, has TONS of protein in it, add Stivia or some other artificial sweetener to it, or sugar free jelly....a little fruit, be creative, just nothing you shouldn't. Great source of protein. I hope these suggestions help!!! Three weeks is a long time, you can overcome this, I promise you!!! Good luck, this tool works, just work with it!!! Also, I still weight and measure EVERYTHING....and keep an on line food log, it's good to know exactly how much you are eating and to keep track of your protein and calories!!! Just a suggestion!!

I wanted to thank you all for leaving me with some encouraging words. I have an appointment 12/3/09 set to get a fill, this will be like my 4th fill. This time it has been almost 9 months since I had been from embarrassment of my doc seeing that I was gaining weight. I shouldn't have let that hold me back, because now I have gained back entirely too much...but I hope I can change it around, just really depressed and down and trying to get out of this rut. I do appreciate your support and again thank you.

Hi Banded Gal, I had a lot of trouble getting to my "sweet spot". I'm banded 10 years in March. I lost 120lbs in 1 year. Some of the problems I had were of my own making (I kept too tight sometimes trying to lose weight... a VERY BAD IDEA.) The main thing I did was journal my food (everything... bites, licks and tastes as Weight Watchers calls it), exercise and talk with other bandsters. Protein was #1 priority. Also My dr told me not to go low fat. Rather full fat is more satisfying and just watch the portions. I couldn't eat in the morning so I did Protein shakes (I still do use protein shakes ). Also a big mistake I made after I lost most of my weight was to rely on ice cream. This caused me to have a terrible sugar addiction of which I'm dealing with even now. Talk to your doctor and/or nutritionist so they can adjust what you're eating. Not sure if this is helpful but that's what I did. Let me know if you have any other questions Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Totally of the subject I posted...Sammee, the weight in just dropping. You are going to be underweight shortly!! In all seriousness you are a model bandster and pretty much one of the most successful I know. You are an inspiration and yes I am extremely jealous of you :) Hugs

Hi! I got my first fill yesterday. I went to see Dr. Gonzales in Winston-Salem. $250.00 FYI I really liked him a lot. He said I was an "easy stick." Got me on the first shot and put in 2cc. I am not sure I have restriction - because I am on liquids & mushies - but here's hoping. He said it was unrealistic to try and achieve my goal weight. He says that banders lose 50% of their excess weight. There are overachievers at 80% and under acheivers at 30%. I told him I was gonna be an overacheiver. This was too darn expensive for anything else! BTW - I asked him why a clearly asian person had a mexican name. He told me that it was NOT a mexican name, it was a SPANISH name. And it was because he is from the Phillipines who were invaded and conquered by the Spanish 300 years ago. They left their names behind. Hence, Eduardo Gonzalez. :-)

I really need help
WLSResources/ClothingExch replied to candyhannan's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Use the "Surgeons" tab above to look for surgeons in your area. Call their offices to ask about making an appointment to discuss your band and, if can still work for you, how to get the most from it. People here at Bariatric Pal can do their best to help you if you put your messages in one place. You can choose the appropriate place by reading through subject headings in the "Forums" tab above. By the way, weight-loss surgery isn't like sewing a coat. Sleeves are not "put in." Gastric sleeve surgery is a matter of taking out. -
Just Scheduled. ?? after reading posts.

Yep, you have to find your way. I can eat bread, I shouldn't eat too much bread, and should avoid white bread. I can eat rice, IF it's in some type of sauce or gravy. But think about it...white rice with high fat high sodium gravy, no I CAN'T eat that and lose weight well. So I can, but I can't. This is one of those "it depends" questions you won't have the answer to till you get there. But think of this...if I do eat rice and gravy, I eat maybe 2 TBS and 1 ounce of gravy with my meal...NOT a cup of cooked rice with 4 ounces of gravy. Get it? My band keeps me from tripling my portion size. Even if I do eat it, it's not the horrible way I used to. My band keeps me much more reasonable. -
1. Started losing around 3 months out 2. It was mostly just noticeable to me, I was freaking! 3. I was/am taking a multi, Calcium plus D and a hair/skin/nails B complex with 3000mcg of Biotin 4. The loss slowed down within three months 5. I was back to normal after six months. I can tell you what I was told and what seemed to ring true for me. In our case the hair loss is not always related solely to Vitamin deficiency but you need to eat well and take your Vitamins because regardless of whether you lost due to deficiency or not, the vitamins will help your body recover and help your hair to grow back. Often the hair loss is simply due to shock. You suddenly changed your diet, likely ate an extremely restrictive pre-op/ post op diet. On top of that, anesthesia and surgery can stress your system and now your diet is still restricted and you are losing a lot of weight. With all of this your body sort of goes into a shock mode. Your body puts all of its focus on processes necessary for survival and hair is not one of those things. Hair is on a 3-month cycle. So hair loss typically becomes noticeable at around 3 months. Once your body recovers (vitamins and a good diet aids in this), your loss will slow down and will begin to grow back within 3 months (again proper diet and supplements help it to grow and makes regrowth nice and healthy). My doctor assured me that not one of his patients went bald due to surgery and I found that all that he said was true for me.

Sounds like you are doing just fine! If you are losing weight you are losing fat around that liver. Best of luck!
-
You lose hair because surgery and weight loss was a shock to your system. When I had my sleeve 2011 I thought I would be ok.Nope,I lost hair and it grew back in.Alarming when you see it and you panic.I had bypass 3 1/2 weeks ago they still said I could lose hair.I'm taking Hair,Skin and Nails supplements.Hope it helps but won't be surprised if I lose hair again.

I have has my band for 5 years with great success (-140) and very little problems. I haven't been to my doc in 3 years! (Didn't realize it had been that long). I have been struggling with burning stomach, some reflux, being able to eat too much, and weight gain ( about 20 lbs since November) I let all these things go for way too long I know! (Don't wait like me). I finally went in on Monday and they completely unfilled my band. She thinks I have just stretched my pouch. But I'm going in the morning for an upper gi to be sure. I'm hoping there is no major prob and a few weeks of unfill will fix it! Now I have to try to be a very good girl in the eating department. Thanks for letting me vent to people that understand all of this!

I'm glad to hear that!!!! All the meds I've been on (keep in mind I'm only 25 as of this coming sundday -- but i've been on and off a medley of prescriptions since i was 17 --) keep me from even thinking about getting close under the covers, yet alone actually wanting it. Poor hubby deals, but i know he gets miserable at times. So one of my secret hopes of this surgery is that losing the weight will make me want it more (preferably a lot more!!). Which in turn will make hubby happier!:clap2:

Well I made it through that. I have lost 17lbs and I was surprized. I hadn't weighed for two weeks prior. I had a 255 goal and weighed in at 254!!! I can feel a difference with 2cc's in my 4cc band. I can't wait to pull this weight off.... The local for this fill was a little painful but not bad. I didn't pay a cent at Hamilton Diagnostic. They filed insurance for me... Cyall:cool:

You've lost 60 lbs since last month and you're dissapointed? I took Celexa, Wellbutrin, and Abilify (the first 2 antidepressants and the 3rd an antipsychotic) for about 18 mths following my surgery. No problems with weight loss at all. My psych tapered me off everything but the Celexa (and I've gone down in that by 1/2) in the past 18 mths and I'm terrific! Now, if I try to go off of the Celexa, I feel it, but that's no biggy to be on a microdose of antidepressants. I think once you start losing the weight, your brain chemicals and your life will get better, hence the tapering of my meds. So, no, I don't think any psych meds will hinder your ability to lose weight. It might make it a little slower, but you can still do it! Good luck! Marci
