Sleeved August 5, home today!
Formyboys2015 replied to Thinside's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery Aug 4th at 11am. I was in recovery until about 4 because they didn't have a room. I was pretty sleepy for about 24 hours so I did a lot of sleeping and walking. I had the barium x-ray on Wednesday morning and it was awful. I barfed it all back up but kept it down long enough for them to check for leaks. After that I was cleared to have broth, jello, water, and juice. I really didn't want anything while I was in the hospital. I came home Thursday and got all of my protein in yesterday which made me super happy. I haven't gotten all of my water in yet so I'm working on that today. My biggest issue is the exhaustion. I have 2 small children and am used to going and doing things all day. Now I put laundry in and have to sit down. Veterans, how long does this last? I have basically no pain since the gas is getting better. My incisions never hurt, they're just itchy. -
The article says "less than 1% of the product is “whey protein concentrate.” Whey protein is the type of protein that you should be looking for because it absorbs more quickly than casein." In stage 1 the liquid phase, it is hard to get your protein from any other sources besides the fact that I bought so much of it. I was worried about damage done, but now that I'm out of stage 1 and doing soups and able to add a scoop of protein I am glad.. I will continue to use them, but cautiously, since I have them, but I hope that Premier isn't lying about anything else about the product. Disappointed.

So, what do you eat everyday? I am weaning off liquids and moving to solids. If I get Protein, I seem to also get a lot of fat. So I'm wondering, what kind of foods do you eat to keep the calories and fat low, but the protein high? Any tips would be great! Thanks!

Tastes are very individual. I'd suggest trying a bunch to see what you like. unjury tends to be a popular one and so do the Premier ready to drink Protein shakes. Good luck! ~Amy

Bust out the Vitamix & go to town with that bad boy! Campbell’s Chunky Soups were great for me. They even have some good protein but there are so many other options. -
Yes: today is the first day of my pre-op diet and I've just had my very first protein shake ever. After all I've read on here, it was better than I expected! Yes, I had the indulgent "final" meals. Now it's time to follow the plan and change my life. I love to cook and to eat and don't eat fast food or a lot of junk--just too many carbs, too many fats. One of the things I've realized is that there really won't be anything off-limits for life in terms of the sleeve--but there are things that SHOULD be off-limits for the sake of my health. I'm okay with that: maybe I'll miss bread and mashed potatoes, but are they really worth the diabetes, ,knee pain, high blood pressure, etc.? NO. Hang in there, Lk664 . . . and keep focusing on how much better your life will be in the future.

In the old days I ate like an elephant because I was working out and thought the added food would be burned up. It wasn't. I got fat no matter how hard I worked out. After the sleeve things changed. When I started an extremely strenuous job my big concern was eating enough. I lost weight, I lost fat. The extra eating I do when getting extreme exercise is still much less than before the sleeve. I have become accustomed to the smaller portions and don't give them a second thought. I just eat more often...to get the Protein in. Off the subject...I think you write extremely well!

My trainer gave me a lecture today on the amount of food I eat. He said that when we have a session I lose between 400-600 calories and have to up my intake of food so that my blood sugar does not dive. He suggested complex carbs. So today I ate a Protein bar all made with fresh fruit, hemp, Chia, flax, Protein powder dried fruit and nuts. This is the first time i did not crave sugar after a workout or feel depleted of energy. The hour went by so fast and I was ready to do more... Could he be on to something... One day you wake up and people are telling you you need to lose weight..Then people tell you you need to stop losing weight... One day they say you eat to much and then you eat to little... sometimes I just have to give my head a shake because I can't believe that someone told me I have to consume more calories....Me....imagine!!! Have others been this confused too... I went to my writing class the other night and watched as everyone was milling around and realized that I am one of the smallest people in the class... I was always the biggest hands down...Everyone seems happy and not self conscious at all. They don't even know I was morbidly obese ( I hate that word ). so they would never understand what I have done or what I have accomplished. I am just another person in a class with a bunch of people taking a course......unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!

That's just strictly Protein, right? That sounds like how we eat with the sleeve.

Dr. Aceves - August 15th
reddressgirl replied to reddressgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm home. It was wonderful to sleep in my own bed again. The surgery was successful and my recovery is going great! The only downside I am working on right now is the mental "fogginess". I know that it is because I am not up to proper levels of Protein intake but it's still irritating. Dr. Aceves was wonderful. Dr. Campos rocked. Actually ALL of the staff was incredible. Every single individual there was amazing. They were attentive and compassionate and informative. I only wish that I knew spanish. All I can say is this is completely different. You could have told be all day long that I would only be able to consume 2 ounces at a time and it still would have been hard to wrap my brain around. My husband was amazing. I am so glad that he went with me. We made several friends while we were there. But know that it has been a long journey between day 2 and today. Day 2 stunk. It is the worst I have felt in a long time if ever. But amazingly day 3 was dramatically better and yesterday was even better (except the long flights). Did I mention that I was glad to be back home?!?:lol0: -
Weak and nauseous

I also am 6 days out. However my surgeon put me on a clear liquid for 3 weeks. She told me that eating anything with protein will not be good to my new tummy. Perhaps it's the protein or dairy as I feel great! Good luck -
I'm on my 8 out of 14 day My day two and three were the worst! Phsyically Headache but I was not drinking enough fluids I am three shakes a day and two Protein bars The rest is now mentally Yes I'm going through withdrawals with wanting that roll or anything! But try different crystal light drink favors and carry a Water bottle filled all the time that helped I am down 10 lbs and now on the downward slide I also keep thinking of the reward at the end.

It's good to know I have a surgery buddy, keeping in contact will definitely help me stay on track when I go through my liver shrinking diet as well as staying on track afterwards. is optifast protein powder? i really haven't started buying supplies but I know I need to soon. I was on a diet when i went through my eight week class but since then I have picked up some of my old habits.

Little Disappointed In My Weight Loss So Far
wrestlingmom replied to BettinaB's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I too was banded on 7/15/08 and I have lost 5 lbs. I do everything right, I eat my protein, drink my water, and eat 800-1000 calories a day. I was only expecting to lose 10 lbs per month, but am no where near that. If I had lost 26 lbs since my surgery I would be dancing on the stars. Everyone loses at different rates and we all need to be happy to be losing and not gaining at this point. -
Generally when you went in for the operation, you gained weight because they filled your body with fluids. You have to lose those first before you begin to see the scales move. You body is in a major heal mode at the moment. It will take a few weeks of being on the mend and then the numbers will begin to drop. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. Some people find it difficult to meet their daily protein and fluid goals the first couple weeks because their body is in a heal mode. Just keep working on it and you should get there.

My surgery is Aug. 4th. It feels both too far and too close. I'm fighting the urge to eat everything in sight (so far, successfully) and am introducing more protein drinks into my current diet so I can find ones I like and get used to them. Though I'm staying within my recommended 1800-2000 calorie diet in order to lose as much as possible before the surgery, I have to admit that part of me says: screw it. Eat what you can, when you can.. I've decided to build in a treat or two a week in order to maintain a balance. I'm also debating just throwing out my scale altogether. I certainly get weighed often enough with all these doctors' appointments, and I'm trying to get over an unhealthy obsession with what the scale says.

Trouble with intaking protein
reree6898 replied to meghanl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The fair life milk is available at Kroger and walmart and it is regular milk but ultra filtered so it had less sugars and very high in protein for being just milk. You may want to try that if you can't do the protein shakes. Also there is isopure drinks that are like high protein Gatorade. They are available at the vitamin store or online at Amazon. Good luck to you. -
What are the best and easy to come by? Did you stock up on the approved foods for after surgery before you went in? I got my food list for what and when I can eat.

I was on 3 shakes a day for a total of 600 calories a day during my 14 day pre-op shake phase. Prior to that I had to have a six month - monthly weigh ins before the doctor got approval from my insurance company. my doctor had me on 800-1000 calories a day (I always stayed under 900 calories, 80 grams of Protein and 45-75 carbs (I tried to stay under 50) carbs and I lost weight each month persistently even though I had fun days. 1200-1500 calories a day seems very high to me for a pre-op phase. It seems like a good amount of calories for maintenance phase especially if you are exercising. One thing though, everyone picked their surgeon for a reason and I think listening to your surgeon's advice, but did your surgeon set you up with a nutritionist first? My suggestion, which cannot hurt you and will give you the results you want would be: Drink 64 ounces of Water a day - Walk as much as you can and the most important thing is to avoid as many carbs as you can. Keep carbs under 6-7 grams of per serving and as high a protein as possible. Why not try TWO Protein Shakes a day, sugar-free popsicles & sugar-free Jello as Snacks and eat a sensible dinner - "protein - plus vegetable". The shakes & vegetable and sf stuff will give you the amount of carbs you need for energy and the least carbs you have the better your liver will be for surgery. Best of luck. Sorry I had to edit this I hit send too fast.

I was about 100 lbs overweight and my doctor also put me on the pre-op liquid diet. I asked at his office why they don't do everyone, and they said it is determined during the examination by the surgeon. I think if he/she thinks the liver is fatty and they want to shrink it to make surgery easier they do it. I had Atkins Advantage (ready to drink) and EAS Advantage (powder to mix with skim milk), purchased at Target. I found Worldwide Protein shakes (ready to drink) at Trader Joe's in vanilla and chocolate. It comes in 21g and 35g of protein, and to me tastes better than Atkins. I discovered recently that GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe carry Worldwide, and it also comes in banana cream, Cookies and cream, and strawberry. I found them online so I don't know what the stores carry. They only had 35g online. At Trader Joes the 21s cost $1.69 and the 35s cost about $2.29. There is also a website called unjury and they sell powdered protein to mix with skim milk or Crystal Light(the strawberry flavor only for Crystal Light). Comes in strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, chicken Soup (kind of like chicken broth), and unflavored. I found a cookbook link to livingafterwls.com and bought the cookbook, recipes all by wls patients. One is super easy: make up a package of sugar/fat free Jello pudding, adding a scoop of unflavored Unjury. This bumps up the protein content of the pudding. On the full liquid diet I could have broth, tea, coffee, cream Soups, sugar/fat free popsicles and pudding, yogurt, V8 juice, fruit juice (diluted 50% with Water to reduce carbs) and Protein drinks. To ease me into the liquids, the dietician said I could have a small amount of lean protein, so at night when I would tend to overeat the most, I grilled two unbreaded chicken breast tenders and put salt and pepper on them, or I had two hard boiled eggs with salt and pepper. Four days before surgery strictly liquids. I lost around 35 pounds before surgery. I was a little hungry during the day, but I expected that, and work is so busy I didn't have time to dwell on it. So far I have lost 65 pounds. I was banded 3/25/08.

Too much protein shake?
theantichick replied to McKinneyMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Long time hereditary migraine sufferer here, too. My daughter actually was hospitalized with a status basilar migraine for a week when she was 16. Her neuro gave us some of the best advice, EVER. He said don't get hungry or thirsty, those are sure-fire migraine triggers. Also, if you drink caffeine, stopping it cold turkey will absolutely trigger it. Then there's all of the triggers that are specific to the individual - processed meat (nitrates), red wine, beer, aged cheese, weather, hormones, what have you. The pre-op diet wasn't too bad for me, but I'm convinced it's because my surgeon doesn't have a strict pre-op diet unless you already have liver problems. I was only asked to replace 2 meals a day with shakes, and make my 3rd meal and any Snacks low-fat and avoid processed grains and refined sugars, fruit was fine. I didn't do all of that as well as I should have, but it allowed me to lose a few pounds. I also cut out caffeine, but I did it VERY slowly. If you're drinking plenty of Water (100+ oz a day is what I consider well-hydrated), and you're drinking shakes regularly, then I would suspect that the lack of carbs in your diet is the culprit. You didn't say if you're pre-op or post-op. If you're pre-op then I would suggest talking to your surgeon's team and seeing if there's some way you can add back in some calories and complex carbs to help with the migraines. If you're post-op, then all I can offer is to gut through it. I get VERY ill in ketogenesis, and the first 3 weeks post-op I couldn't get out of keto without eating stuff with refined sugar in it. So I just kept up the Protein and water and pushed through. Also, something my daughter's neuro told us... whenever you have a headache (migraine or not) it starts an inflammatory cascade in your brain that will turn into migraines or turn into a string of migraines. He told us on any day we had a headache of any sort, when we went to bed that night to take 800mg of ibuprofen and whatever dose of Benadryl we were accustomed to (I can take high doses because I've taken it forever, my daughter usually just takes one OTC). Obviously, you'll want to check with your doctor before taking any meds like that, but I like to share that tidbit because it has helped us reduce the string of migraines thing, or stress/sinus headaches turning into migraines the next day. Good luck!!
