    Struggling with final decision.

Thanks. the doctor my other doctor recommended is putting me through 2 one hour seminars about gastric bypass and lap band before making my decision. I go to the first one tomorrow. But the stuff I was reading online made me hesitant. I guess I found bad information. I think I really need the extra help. Especially with appetite control. I do a lot of weights... and I read in a few places that weights are not good after lap band. Maybe I miss understood and they were only talking after surgery. They said walking and running are the best exercises. I'll have to go back. I think they must have meant until I was healed from the procedure.

    Boobies

I have two friends who had the bypass; they both say they have to roll up the boobs and put in the bra! Your boobs are mostly fat.

    Am I eating too much

Had gastric bypass and I had worries about my pouch size. I've only just now started to recognize a full feeling at almost 3 months out. I was eating fish/chicken by 4 weeks out and not feeling full on a 2.5 ounce portion size. However, I stuck to measuring out my food and never tried to push it. Even today I don't know how much I can eat before getting sick, as I've never made myself sick. I know I can eat 3/4 cup and will start to feel full. So yeah, with a bigger pouch size for DS, you may never experience an overwhelming full feeling. The key (to echo others) is to stick to your plan... eventually your stomach will heal and your head will get in line and you'll start to recognize new feelings of being satiated.

    Day 3

Glad your doing well. You are correct on everyone is different. Some people lose immediately and some do not start losing until after a fill and some struggle with losing all together. You are also correct in trying to stay positive, if you follow the rules your chances of being successful with lap band are increased. Unlike gastric bypass we do not have dumping and we truly are what we eat. You have to learn early what a slider is, ice cream, milk shakes, chips, junk food. Unfortunately, these foods will seem to always go down when we struggle with healthy foods. But if you think about it, when you chew chips and pretzels they pretty much dissolve in your mouth and do not need the stomach to break it down, protein is another story, you chew and chew and chew to make sure it can pass through the band. Take what you can from everyones posts, we all get frustrated from time to time and this is our one sounding board that someone can identify with our frustrations. Good luck to you and remember to take pictures of your self now, and also measurements. These will save as reminders of where you started and how far you have come. Good luck to you.
  5. Welcome and congrats to you on your new beginning wish you the best...I myself have just join and thought to myself that this is an awesome group... my surgery is schedule for November and I'm so anxious... I'm glad I made the choice of getting the band also

    stage 3 food

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. The plan I was given to follow was: Weeks 1-8: 2 ounces of food per meal x 3 meals per day Weeks 9-15: 3 ounces per meal Months 4-6: 4 ounces per meal Months 7-9: 5 ounces per meal Months 10-12: 6 ounces per meal Months 12-18: 7 ounces per meal Months 18 and beyond: 8 ounces per meal One other point. Protein shakes do not count against your meal allotment. I would blend in a half a banana into my Protein shake and the half a banana does not count against my meals. [but don't take this to the extreme.]

    getting ready to get banded

So I have my surgery on June 4th. I, of course, have read everything I can but I am still very interested in "what to expect" from those who have been through it. I was reading some blogs and people say they will never eat a burger again or a steak, is that true? you will never be able to do that or is that just the case up front? I have not been told too much about diet after the first 8 wks, but I am curious as to what ya'll are living on? I am excited and scared and was this the right choice, should I have thought about the bypass, what if the thing slips, or erodes, or what it the port does something strange, will I be able to feel in on my stomach, will i feel the port floating around...I guess I am a little nervous but sooo excited about the fact that I am going to have help with my calorie intake. anyone want to mentor me? :rolleyes2:

No Fill Yet and Afraid to Step on Scale!

Thank you so much for posting your blog. I am in the exact same position. I am absolutely terrified of the fact that I can pretty much eat whatever I want and I too know that before my first fill (June 9th) the scale will have gone up a couple pounds. It is such a mental thing with me and why I chose to eat the way I do. That is part of the reason why I wanted to let the whole world know about my surgery and pretty much did. I have told everyone at work, my family, friends, etc. My thinking was that if I told everyone then I would be held accountable for choices and behaviors that I make with food. Also, people who I spend time with will understand and want to help me succeed but motivating me to make good food choices. Now I am not sure that was such a good idea. I am a cash patient. Spending over 10k out of pocket for this surgery so my husband is also looking at where the the money is going (so to speak). Now I am getting asked every other day what the scale says and I am only 4 weeks post-op! I lost 19lbs since the pre-op diet, I fear that I have set a precedence for dramatic results in a short time. Not everyone understands the difference between the types of surgeries available for weight loss so most of my friends and co-workers are looking for me to be skinny by the end of summer! Yeah - right!! I guess my next task is educating everyone on the differences between the lap-band and gastric bypass procedure. It sounds as if we were banded around the same time and i look forward to reading about your progress. Good luck and God bless!! You are in good company!!
  9. I worked as an RN in a surgical ICU for years and we used to get all the open gastric bypass patients and I saw all the complications which were much more frequent years ago. After the laparoscopic method started becoming the standard, the complications dropped dramatically and I kind of started thinking about it. That was about 10 years ago and after my weight continued to rise, it was now time.
  10. A very heavy lady at church in Maryland back in early 2000's lost a lot of weight. I think she had gastric bypass, which was not for me. I later, after moving to Florida< met a young girl who went o Mexico to have lapband surgery and she looked fantastic. So, that enticed both my daughter and I to investigate lapband surgery. The rest is history!!
  11. OK, I don't know if this is true or not but I found this on a website: "the bypassed stomach remnant or body remains present because it still has important jobs to do – namely the production of digestive enzymes and juices and hormones which still play an important role in digestion and metabolism. Removing the stomach would increase the invasiveness and risks, magnitude and recovery time of surgery markedly and bring very minimal advantage." http://www.sasseguide.com/blog/what-happens-to-the-%e2%80%9cold-stomach%e2%80%9d-in-gastric-bypass/
  12. I drink 2% milk now can handle 1% but can't stand skim I know others that had the gastric bypass and they are drinking skim. Do I have to switch to skim or is 1% ok?

    Getting covered in Ohio

So, I started this whole journey in October 2016. I had just started a new job, whose insurance plan does not cover any weight loss plans, including surgery. So, I opted out and started calling around to different companies. I THOUGHT I found a plan that would cover it (the saleslady said it would!), but, I was duped. Fast forward 7 months, my parents agreed to pay (they are not wealthy people, so I know what the burden is). Now, here's the thing, I started with such a high BMI, that my surgeon refused to do the gastric bypass. He also advised that I probably would not find a surgeon who would. Instead, we decided to do the procedure in stages. So, I have a gastric sleeve, which I love. Now, I need to find an insurance plan to cover the bypass. My surgeon documented everything from the beginning to indicate that this was the plan all along, so that if I found a plan, they can't reject based on perceived failure of the initial operation. My question for you all is: Does anyone know of a plan in Ohio that will cover weight loss surgery?
  14. Hello everyone, I am a newbie to the community and started my process on January 26th and finally decided on a surgeon. I had my first nutrition visit and I suppose I will be scheduled for surgery at some point at the end of May. I originally planned to have the bypass and even quit smoking recently so that I would qualify. My concern is after reading everything, that the side effects will be too much for me to handle. I know that everyone is different I suppose I am just having second thoughts. Can you all offer me some feedback on why you chose your surgery?
  15. I had my lap band surgery on October 9th, 2012! The surgery and recovery went very well, but the year with the lap band wasn’t fun for me. I threw up once or twice every day with lots of mucus. I kept my lap band on for the year, hoping and praying that it would get better and it didn’t. The typical response that I received was that I wasn't chewing long enough but I was. The doctor decided that it would be a good idea to take all the saline out of my band and see how I was feeling after. After having the saline removed and still having the same problems. The doctor decided to do another scope. During the scope, he discovered that I had ulcers in my esophagus. Thinking that this might be the problem, he prescribed a medication to see if they would clear up. A month later I went for another scope and the medication worked, but I was still throwing up. After having a long discussion with my doctor, I explained that I could no longer handle the throwing up and that I wanted to have the band taken out. He also at that time referred me to the Bariatric clinic for surgery. On June 12th, I had my lap band removed and from that day on I have not thrown up. I can finally eat normally without throwing up. I am now in the Bariatric program awaiting the surgery and I would like to talk to anyone who has been down the similar journey with the lap band and now had the gastric bypass surgery? Which surgery did you have and how are you handling food after the surgery? Thank you in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. Connie

Embarrassed by My Six Year Old

First congratulation on ur weight lose. Mine hasn't yet been that major hopefully soon. Looking to have gastric bypass in april.. Well l have been working at reaching my pre opp weight I lost that plus some. Well last Sunday I was sitting in church service while 5 men members were singing church songs I had my bra brake. Being that I have financal struggles. I didn't have funds to run out and buy clothes for the weightloss I made . I had to keep adjusting the bra trying to hold up my chest.(take note I went from ddd to dd ) and I quit in church service. Felt one was supported while one was free. Omg talk about wronge place and timing.
  17. 3 months of supervised diet? DONE Psych eval? DONE 17 pages of notes sent to BCBS for approval? DONE My packet o' papers was faxed over to Blue Cross this morning! This is our second shot at approval. I think we dotted and crossed everything now and I will be approved this time. I lost 15 pounds on the supervised diet but find myself doing a little cheating lately since the 3 months is done and I want to eat whatever I want while I can. Anyone else in the same boat as me? I was hoping for November surgery and now I'm thinking it's going to be January. It'll be a good way to start the new year!

  19. Your story is powerful and relatable to me... I got lots of resistance from friends and at first from my mom but in the end it was about me and what I know about myself I did start seeing a psychologist twice a week for my eating and other emotional issues including PTSD and bipolar which was recently dx after over 10 years of a mislabel of major depressive disorder The one thing that concerns me is tge type of surgery your getting.... I was originally going to get RNY but got cold feet, ended up psych hospital and many other health flare ups. My BMI was 52 so rny fit however when my surgeon saw me again a number of months latter, he was vety reluctant to do rny due to the realization that my depression issues are severe and I need so much meds to manage multiple medical and psych conditions. He totally said gastric sleeve was best because the RNY malabsorption can really screw up your maintenance medications and is more complex them sleeve in terms of care. My psychiatrist also shared with me that he has a really hard time adjusting medications in his bypass patients So, I'm not sure why your surgeon hasn't brought this up...maybe he doesn't realize that you have clinical depression...I told my surgeon originally but he still didn't get it until he saw my record in the computer system around a year latter, he got to see the extent of my medical and psych issues and I had been cleared by their psychologist too!! So I'm just being super candid, vulnerable and open sharing my sensitive history with you bc it concerns me a lot My surgeon acknowledged that RNY was ideal for my BMI but not for my mefical/psych history He also asked for a letter from my mental health ppl about my readiness for weight loss surgery. I'm really glad he was through in the end and my mom felt better and supported me too. My therapist knew I read, researched and was more then ready and I have his support along the journey I think your sister and mom have genuine concerns even though loosing weight tge " regular" way is not research supported for really overweight people but you do need to be emotionally prepared for it. Good fortune

    I feel like a failure!!!

I agree with Keisha85 - the doctors are there to help you. They know that food is a struggle for us. If it wasn't none of us would have the surgery, right? I am just on day 2 of my pre-op liquid diet and I know this is going to be hard, but if you give up now then all of your pre-op work will be lost! My sister just had the gastric bypass done and has chosen to look for things to distract her from food - her Nintendo DS, reading, etc. I don't know your exact situation but keeping busy always works for me to help stay away from the food. Lately I've been trying to exercise when I'm bored - like going to the pool or park. Anyway - I hope this helped you some!
  21. @ Does everybody get abdominal binders for bypass? I thought that was for open procedures. How long do you need to wear it?

    June 2, 2013.....week 2

So many changes in one week to report......... First, my tentative scheduled sleeve date changed - instead of August 19th, I'm doing it on August 5th - two weeks earlier!! When I start to think that at the end of next month, I have to start the pre-op diet - it just sort of blows my mind! Today, I went to my regular doctor, so he could write the "Letter of Medical Necessity." He offered these words of hope, which really put my mind at ease: "Ten years ago, I would have never written this letter for you, because it was mostly for the bypass - but, the sleeve surgery has been so perfected and is the least invasive - it is truly safe." Then, he looked at me in the eyes and asked me a question that sort of shook my psyche: "Just how much longer do you think your knees and hips could hold up your weight anyways?" "Not much...." I replied meekly. So, here's the weekly progress: June 2, 2013 9 weeks post op - Current weight: 316.8 Goal weight: 172 Height: 5'10" My weekly diet modifications: Incorporoate one small, healthy meal in this week. My weekly behavioral modifications: Trying to eat dinner, minus the television - needs more work. I really need to try harder to do this... Pre surgery tasks - Today - I went to my regular doctor to get the "Letter of Medical Necessity." Tuesday - second appointment with the nutritionist Wednesday - monthly Bariatric Support Group meeting

    filled too tight?

Laura please be super careful. I had a fill on November 11th and kept thinking things would get better. Well they didn't, I now know that being to tight caused my aspiration pneumonia. I have had the band since May of 2004 and never had any acid reflux or heartburn. Since my fill in Nov I had it constantly. I was taking all kinds of antacids. Eating things on the mushy side lots of soups and ice cream all the stuff we really shouldn't. If our band is right we should be able to eat pretty normal, but much less. Just be really careful, I know I wanted my fill to smooth out. I had been stuck on my weight loss and was really hoping that a new fill would just kick it in again. But in reality I just needed to be a better bandster. Trust me it is not worth getting sick, I am just now since my unfil last week starting to feel better. I think you will know, I think I did I was just hoping that it would get better. Be careful!!!!!!

    Weird thing happened

Banded and home in the same day? While not as invasive as a RNY Bypass, you should have still remained in the hopsital overnight so that they could evaluate you by flouoscopy 24 hrs later. If you don't mind me asking, who is your doctor and where did you have the surgery performed?

    I'm getting discouraged...

The doctors assume you are compliant with your sleep apnea treatment. Sleep apnea is dangerous, if you have it, it'd be a good idea to use your CPAP machine. For more info see, note on the link is a graph which helps illustrate the benefits of using a CPAP machine vs. not - The danger of untreated sleep apnea Everyone agrees that the breath-stopping type of snoring known as sleep apnea isn’t a good thing — it disrupts your nighttime rest, makes you sleepy during the daytime, boosts blood pressure, and increases the chances of developing heart trouble. Just how bad is it? Pretty bad, according to an extended study of almost 1,500 Spanish snorers. Researchers followed the men, who had been referred to a hospital sleep clinic, with yearly checkups. All were offered the most successful treatment, called continuous positive airway pressure. It involves breathing through a face mask that delivers a stream of air into the nose. Many of the study volunteers decided not to use the device. After 10 years, the researchers tallied up how many of the men had suffered a heart attack or stroke, needed a procedure to bypass or open a clogged heart artery, or died from cardiovascular disease. About 1 in 7 men (14%) fell into this camp. Cardiovascular trouble was three times more likely in men with severe untreated sleep apnea than it was in men with treated sleep apnea. In fact, rates of heart trouble were about the same in men with treated apnea as they were among simple snorers — who have noisy but regular breathing during sleep — and nonsnorers. The results appeared in the March 19, 2005, Lancet.
