  1. I am 54 and about 60lbs over weight. I was above to have gastic bypass from my insurance. My Dr. thinks gastic bypass is best for me. I am not sure about that! I think I would feel better with the band. I am now reading all information about the band. I have a friend who had the band and it did not work for her. She did not loss weight and was very sick with the band. I know you do not loss weight as fast with the band that you would with the bypass. I am very scared to have the bypass. So now I will be seeing my dr and tell her that I would feel better the band. Has anyone had both surgeries? Please share your experience

    Hello, new here

Also there is a Gastric Bypass Meal Plan App for your phone
  3. I am about 3 weeks post bypass. The Water weight was gone within a week, and now am on the mushy food phase. I am losing weight very rapidly now, about 2+ pounds a day, and am not having any problem getting my Protein and other nutrients in. Strangely enough, my favorite mushy food is cream of wheat with extra vanilla protein powder/dry powdered nonfat milk mixed in it, with a packet or two of splenda. I made a salmon loaf today with well blended potato, green Beans, can of pink salmon, garlic, pepper, salt, basil, parsley, eggs --- all blended well and then baked. It was good and went down well. I aim for 65% pouch fullness --- several times the pouch filled up and immediately caused discomfort. You will lose weight -- with gastric bypass, in the first year, you will lose weight regardless --- after 18 months, a minority stretch the pouch and regain. In my support group there is one 4 month post surgery person who has started to gain weight but she was drinking lots of sugared soda, which rapidly stretches out the pouch, and then she added food capacity.

    Please Help!

I also choose the sleeve after a lot of research, plus I have 2 friends that have had bypass. You need to read everything you can but I felt that it was important to still have my body function the way it was made to and didn't want to deal with dumping syndrome or the malabsorption problems. I also felt it was a safer surgery with less complications and that was really important to me. I don't know your medical history but your doctor must have his reasons. Did he explain why he felt that way to you? I just got my sleeve on the 12th and am very happy so far.

  6. Hello, I am 6 weeks post op and have no idea what to eat. I was so nauseous for the last 2 1/2 weeks and now I'm starting from scratch. I am scared to eat anything bc I throw up so easily. I am having a very hard time with fluid intake also. Nothing tastes good, even the flavored water I drank with no problems before surgery. Any advice is appreciated!!

    Submitted To Insurance! Eeek!

I am so happy for you!!! At least one of us is headed there. I am still waiting and the insurance keeps moving the date that they have for it being turned in. doc faxed it the 27th november, they said they didn't get it until the 29th. they said 7 to 10 working days from then. Next they told me the nurse didn't start reviewing it until the third. but they still have no answer. it is driving me crazy. i have been on this horrible shake plan since the 3rd and don't think iam getting surgery this month, so i feel like i have wasted my time, except i am 2 lbs away from surgery weight....just frustrated, but i really am happy for you. what happens next for you?

    Restraint

So as I'm sure we all know, the Holidays can be a little rough for those of us with the band...especially for those of us who just STARTED with the band. I just began regular food on Tuesday. I understand the phrase "bandster hell" because although I've been staying below 800 calories, I'm so super conscious of everything I put in my mouth!! I have yet to feel restriction but most of the time (depending on the portion size) I force myself to only eat half the meal. It can be mighty frustrating. I've been doing what I'm told and eating really slowly, chewing well, and I've noticed that I only get half way through my meal by time my friends are done (I've been out to eat twice now). This works because when they are done, I just stop and get the rest boxed up. So now I have leftovers that are also in a good portion size. Last night was my work Christmas dinner and I just kept praying the waitress would hurry up and bring me my box so I could stop looking at the delicious food on my plate. I just knew I could finish eating it, but I was holding myself back. This part stinks because I feel like I'm on a diet. I also had to stop myself from eating the bread and the salad that came with the meal...as well as dessert afterwards!! Although I am proud of myself for holding back, I have not lost anything all week. Nor have I lost any inches (I measure myself once a week). Yes, I do realize this can be normal, but I still feel like I'm torturing myself to get little or no results. I have lost 10 pounds since surgery on November 21st, so I shouldn't be complaining, but I also believe all my good decisions and restraint should show for something!! I'm just trying not to get discouraged. Also, to be honest, I have yet to start exercising. I was told to wait 4 to 6 weeks, yet I see a bunch of people on here exercising sooner than that. I haven't even walked for fear that I would damage something. Well, even though now I realize I probably didn't have to wait this long, I'm going to start walking next week, and then join a gym 2 weeks after that. I'm hoping this helps with the weight loss! I really just want to lose at least 3 more pounds before January 3rd (my next doctors appointment and possibly my first fill). I am glad that I have not GAINED weight since I started back on regular food. That's probably due to my miraculous restraint lol. Anyways, that's my rant for this week. Tune back next week for all new ones! Haha!!

    What pushed you to commit?

I guess you can say I hit rock bottom. I turned 40, and I took a look at my life. I have always done for my husband, my kids and I decided it was time to do something for myself. WLS is not to be taken lately, I totally agree. I was just sick of being tired, sick of feeling like a fat pig, I was sick of my life the way it was. I love my family and for the most part was happy - but me personally was missing something, and that was the feeling I use to feel. the feeling of youth. I felt that my weight played a big part in that, and I have tried like most everyone here, every diet ever created. Gastric Bypass was out of the question, my DH would never agree to it. And a friend who had the GB, told me about lap-band. The more I researched, the more I know it was for me. Am I scared, heck yes. Am I nervous about getting the surgery, heck yes. But, I'm prepared to go the distance and do what it takes to feel good about my body and myself again. I am not going to be 40 and fat! By gosh, I can't control turning 40, I can't control the wrinkles I'm beginning to get - but I can control being fat!

    What pushed you to commit?

I've been reading for over a YEAR!!! I've been to one seminar and think I know the questions and answers by heart. I don't know why I can't pick up the phone and commit to having the surgery!! :faint: Just the same type of failure I guess as all the other failed attempts at weight loss. I have enjoyed reading the November and December bandsters posts. What finally helped make your decision. I'm self-pay so I guess that's a BIG thing, since I feel that I'm taking a LOT of money from our joint account. We both work very hard to make a living and 16K...well that's a LOT. I keep thinking I can do it on my own and keep failing. I just tried weight watchers AGAIN for the 100th time and didn't stay on program for a week. Soooo. I'm afraid of having surgery and not being able to stay on *the program* :cry Thanks for listening and hopfully you can give me a *clue*

    Sleep apnea

The sleep study can confirm if you have sleep apnea. If you do, they generally prescribe a CPAP machine and request that you use it when you sleep. I believe your surgeon will want you to bring in the CPAP during your time in the hospital and will request that you continue to use it after surgery. In my case, there was a good chance that I had sleep apnea, because for several years prior to surgery my wife could not get any sleep at night because I snored and she was a light sleeper. As a result because of this condition, they scheduled a second round of pre-op testing with a specialist. I met with a neurologist who examined me and recommended a sleep study. I declined and told him that I understood that RNY gastric bypass surgery is known to affect this condition for the better and if I still had a problem after surgery, I would make an appointment and see him for the study. Based on that he passed me for the surgery. Within a few weeks after surgery, my snoring stopped. I would wake up in the middle of the night and find my wife standing, hovering over me. I was sleeping so quietly that she thought I might have died and was trying to determine if I was still alive.

  15. I had bypass on 4/23/18. My starting weight was 340lbs. I'm currently 221lbs. That's a total weight loss of 119lbs! I honestly can't tell you a time I remember being this small my entire life. I'm so happy! First goal: 250lbs [emoji818] Second goal: 225lbs [emoji818] Third goal: 199lbs ...*pending* Final goal: 160-170lbs I never worked out until this month. These last 22lbs until onederland are stubborn. I'm also doing keto and intermittent fasting. This surgery changed my life. I'm almost positive I would be closer to 400lbs by now if I didn't have this surgery. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Band to bypass surgery

I'm having a revision too bypass 11/14/16. Good luck to you on yours !
  18. You have exactly my situation. Same height and weight and goal. I chose the sleeve after all of my research. The risks and complications of bypass just weren't worth it to me.

    Big Questions.....Thank You

The type of surgeon who does the lapband and gastric bypass is called a BARIATRIC (bear-ee-ack-tric) SURGEON. Just be sure that the one that he refers you too is covered by your insurance. Mine tried to refer me to a specific surgeon and I think it was because he gets a cut for referring patients.....lol. Best of luck!

Help 2 Weeks Post Op Today Hungry And Eating...

everyone is different, but you should feel the restriction,I do. if you are 2 weeks out you should be able to start on mushy foods real soon, but thats with your surgeons ok. start with eggs, any way but hard boiled. cottage cheese or yogurt.,if you still have concerns, call your dr,that why he is there, or should be there to help you I've called mine on a saturday and got a return call within an hour do you have a support group to go to,maybe at a local hospital, they are great for info and ideas.the one I go to is primarily full of lap banders,i think im the only sleeve and a few gastric bypassers, but all the info works and is good to hear
  21. I'm down 98 pounds so far with the sleeve. I do work to stay on track with good food choices though. If I don't make an effort I can easily eat lots more food and gain weight. I went wild over the holidays and gained 6 pounds in two weeks. Probably much of that was Water weight from eating lots of sweets, but it was eye opening and let me know that I'll need to track my eating and avoid sweets forever. But - I don't feel deprived at all how I'm eating. It's just I need to work at avoiding mindless and emotional eating. Bypass does seem to lead to better weight loss, but there are more health risks. You really need to stay on top of Vitamins and such or you can develop a host of health problems. In support groups I go to I've just heard a lot of stories about issues down the road with bypass. Mostly related to Vitamin deficiencies or intestinal problems. Whichever you choose (with guidance from your doctor/surgeon too) just make sure to get your head in the game and prepare to change your relationship with food. The surgery is a great opportunity to do that, but if you don't make the most of it, it's not that hard to regain with any of the surgery options. I wish you the best!
  22. First off, there are just as many bypass patients that have significant regain because ALL of the weight loss surgery choices can be cheated. The malabsoprtion of calories/carbs/fats only lasts about 2 years, and then intestinal adaptation takes over, and all you'll have is the restriction of a stretchy pouch. So, if you're going to cheat, any of the surgeries will fail. If you do not address the emotional/mental aspect of making better food choices, none of the surgeries will work long term. Hate to be "debbie downer", but there's way too many stories of people getting surgery, and then regaining in 3-5 years out because they never worked on their relationship with food. You can check out the revision forum on obesityhelp.com and see just how many RNY patients are looking for revision because they've gained back hoards of weight, and can't lose it again even with diet and exercise. I removed the word "cheat" from my vocabulary when it comes to what I eat now. I just have to decide if the food I'm choosing to put in my mouth is nutrient dense or junk food. If I want to have junk, have I compensated it by ensuring I've eaten or will eat my Protein that day? Long term results with bypass and sleeve patients are only about 3-5% higher weight loss numbers for bypass patients. So, long term, you're looking at the same issue if you choose to not address your mental tie to food. My recommendation is to not have surgery until you are ready with other coping mechanisms in place to deal with food. Finding a support group, counselor that has experience with weight loss surgery patients are your best bets. They operate on our stomach, the rest of it is up to us because our brains are in control. You have to make the effort and constant choice on what to put in your body. I can still suck down a huge milkshake every day without issue, and so can my dearest friend that had bypass about 4 years ago. The big difference is, I choose to NOT do it, she does, and she's gained back 50 of her 150lb loss.

Maybe she feels more comfortable with the sleeve as surgery. I do agree with what was said already. I would also add, don't let a surgeon push you into what they want you to have. I don't believe that the regain rate is any higher at 5 years than gastric bypass, and I don't believe that the sleeve has been used long enough to have any way to compare the surgeries. My surgeon told me that people are more successful if they have the surgery they feel is best for them since they have ownership on the procedure.

    No loss after a fill?

This happened to me as well. I was banded in Mexico, and as happy I was to get the procedure there's not alot of extra information handed out from them. I was banded in July of '04, got my first fill in August, and didn't lose anything between then and November when I got my 2nd fill (after I'd found the forums and learned that it wasn't MY fault!!).
  25. Hey All, I am in the very early stages of considering Lap Band surgery. I am 33 years old, weigh 260, 5'6". Thankfully my BP is borderline / good (depending on the day) but I have had high cholesterol since high school and about a year ago, my liver enzymes went above normal (I do not drink and things such as hepatitis and other liver diseases were ruled out, and my liver ultrasound was normal, but it may be related to my weight). I am not on any meds. I also have a neurological disorder that I was born with. While I am mobile, my legs are quite weak, which means I have to be creative with my exercise. I've tried some dieting in the past, but have not had any long term success. Now my weight just keeps on an upward trend which sucks and I have a tough time with willpower. There is a strong history of cardiac issues / heart attacks on one side of my family and I am fearful of going down that road myself. If I do not get my weight under-control, my fear may become a reality!!! I also want to lose weight as I hope that will help to keep me mobile as long as possible. While my docs do not think that I will progress to needing a wheelchair do to my neuro condition itself, I am afraid that my weight might get to the point where that scale is tipped. I hope that I have a good shot of getting the insurance approval due to my BMI and also high cholesterol. I am going to an informational session next week (just signed up today)! My Mom had WLS last year (gastric bypass) and is doing great! I've been able to see her experience and how much it has benefited her but have also been able to see her struggles, so I feel that I have a realistic view of WLS and what I might be in for. So far, she is the only one that I have told that I am considering this, and she has been very supportive. I know that weight loss surgery is only a tool and in fact, it seems like in some ways it may be harder than regular diet and exercise alone, but I think that my health would really benefit from it in multiple ways! How did you all decide on the lap band versus other types of WLS? I am leaning towards the lap band because I am afraid of the "permanence" of the other procedures. (AKA, if something were to go wrong - even if risks are small - it could be reversed. I also have GI issues, so I really do not want to be messing around with my gut by getting a bypass). That being said, I do hope that the lap band will lead to positive permanent change!!! Any other advice??? I am sure that I will come up with many more questions down the road. I'll be back!
