  1. Thanks for the support! I cut to 1500-1800 calories a day and eliminated all bad foods. I try to follow high Protein low carbs and pay close attention sodium. I only drink Water and mio and try to drink 2 gallons a day. I go to the gym 3 times per week and do 60 min of cardio making sure I keep my heart rate in the fat burning zone. Basically I eat foods/recipes that we can have post op so I can get used to eating that way but will be ok if I need to cheat. I'm also kind of weird that I LOVE Protein shakes lol. I also have been making a lot eggfaces recipes so I can get used to cooking that way.
  2. I'm only 7 months out, and been struggling with a stall. So yesterday I tracked absolutely everything I are/drank and discovered I haven't been doing what I should, too many carbs, 150 calories too many, not enough protein. And no exercise. So out came my "manual" and back to basics it is! Time to be accountable!

    Two-Weeks Post-Op

Congratulations on your success! Keep up the good work! I found it helpful to stay focused on taking my vitamins and getting enough protein versus Number of calories. At least for now, I have 100+ to go!

    pre-op diet help needed

Kaiser gives a specific pre op diet 1200 or less calories. Protein, veggies, whole grain, fruit. Protein first. Then veggies etc...They only do shakes the month prior to surgery because they want people to learn to eat healthier first. Im 41 and I can lose 2-5 a week eating under 1200 and EXERCISING...even if it's just a brisk walk but it's easier for me to do circuit weights at the gym than walkng and it builds muscle and burns more fat faster. But replacing meals with shakes you should melt off lbs. good luck. I'm trying more shakes because I'm stocking up for post op so I'm hoping to melt a few extra each week. I get my surgery date this week
  5. Thanks, I actually started, very committed, even if I don't see the dietician until next week, I decided if I were going to do 40+ pounds on my own, I would start now. so far so good. I am disabled, so it isn't the food I have a hard time keeping away from, it is getting a form of exercise in that will do any kind of "heart rate" increase to burn calories. I can get around, but don't have full use of my right leg and arm, so running of any kind is out and lifting is out. I want to go do water classes. It is about 20 miles each way, but I think it might be worth it. I loved it when I did them at the hospital pool with the therapy people. Thanks!!
  6. My preop diet consisted of... 3 Protein shakes/day (read the labels to make sure they have 20-30g protein and no more than 5g sugar)....I could replace a shake with unflavored Protein powder mixed in broth for a break from the sweet shakes. Certain veggies in unlimited quantities (spinach, broccoli, lettuce, brussel sprouts, mushrooms, tomatoes, green beans)....I used flavored vinegar or lemon juice for dressing on the lettuce At least 64oz water/day SF Jello or SF Popsicles. ( I made my own protein pops by freezing Protein drinks in silicone molds I found on Amazon) Didn't count calories or anything. Lost 22 pounds in 16 days (and I'm 45) And Cynthia Alexander's book is great.

    What Can You Eat At...........

Roses - if you're looking to drop weight quickly, then don't do as I do... The reason I am ok with my diet is because I am okay with being a slow loser. If you look around at some of the other members that are losing quickly, it's usually because they count calories or are doing low-carb or something similar... And yes, I can drink OJ, no problem...

    What Can You Eat At...........

ChickFilA isn't that unhealthy, they cook in peanut oil, and the calorie count based off of what a restricted bandster can eat is not horrible. Unless you use a LOT of dipping sauce, those things are pure sugar. And chicken is touch and go for me, but anytime I've had to do McD's in a jam, I try to get something chicken. Not a single piece of anything McD chicken will go down. I don't know why! And I can't talk myself into eating the nasty beef patties without the bread to hide it lol. I use to love McD burgers.. mmm bigmac! Double cheeseburger! Haven't had one since.. March 07.. a whole year!! EEK!

    Looking for pre mixed protein

I have tried about every Protein drink out there and the one I like the best is found at Walmart, GNC, grocery stores. It is made by EAS, comes in a silver packaging and is low carb. It actually has no carbs (made with Sucralose - Splenda), has 100 calories in 11 oz and comes in 2 chocolate flavors, strawberry, vanilla, and cookies-n-cream. I used them a few years ago when I was weight training and tried some in between but always go back to them. They have 15gm protein per drink. Of course, everyone has different tastes. Celeste DOS - 3/1/06 - 41 lbs

    Looking for pre mixed protein

I like vanilla Boost High Protein. I'm not sure how low carb it is though. I don't count carbs. Just about the only thing I count is protein. They are 250 calories a piece with 15g of protein. I tried the strawberry. It's okay. I don't like the chocolate very much at all, but the vanilla is probably the best protein drink I have tried.

    Getting Better Everday

I have not posted in a few days. I actually have been sort of busy. Today is my 7th day being banded. I feel ok. I had one day of wanting to chew for the sake of chewing. I definitely was not hungry. I have yet to break the 500 calorie mark. I drink unjury and put it in my soup, I don't really care for the taste of either the chocolate or the vanilla, but they will do. The unflavored one mixes well into my soups. I may try it in juice tomorrow. The pain is subsiding. That's good becasue my pain pills are worthless. A doublt dose of liquid tylenol seems to work better. My five-year old had given me a few good shots in the stitches. OF course it was by accident, but that didn't make it hurt any less. Two of my incisions are virtually pain free and three are not. My belly itches to high heaven. I constanty feel like I just ate Thanksgiving dinner and the gas is getting on my nerves - sort of. I am burping and pass gas like a mad woman! Hmmm, I have not had a real BM in two days. By real I mean liquid or otherwise. Lately is been liquid. I guess I hope to have one later today? Yeah I guess I do. Well I need to go to sleep because I have church today. Happy reading and I hope I wasn't too graphic.

    Pre-op diet??

I had one done too a week ago, I wasn't nervous at all either, I hope I feel that way the day of.. MFP is My Fitness Pal, it's an app, not sure if you can go on-line for it, but I'm sure you can, that helps count your calorie intake, exercise and whatnot. You can add friends to help you also. You should check it out..
  13. My doc told me: "exercise as much as possible, and eat as few calories as possible." He's probably not the norm, but I don't think it will hurt to do cardio every day if you want to. I would NOT, however, lift weights for the first three months as there can be a risk of hernia doing that. I can't remember exactly what I'd lost in the first 3 months, but I think I was at 50 lbs lost at that point. Hope that helps!

    Surgery is June 2

Its a mix from GNC called Pro Performance AMP Amplified Weybolic Extreme 60. 1 servicing is 3 scoops, and equal to 60grams of Protein. Of course you cant digest 60 grams in one sitting, so i split it --- twice a day 1.5 scoops each It is SO GOOD. I have the chocolate and the Cookies and Cream.. they also have strawberry, and vanilla.. and I think coffee flavored too. Best part ........ each of my servings (half of what the back of the bag states since im splitting their serving in 2) is 140 calories and of that, only 5 calories and .5 grams of fat. and 1 gram of sugar. I LOVE IT... i really encourage everyone to try it. Its the leanest and tastiest I have found yet.

    Too much weight too soon?

I think it is great that you are losing weight. My concern is that you are eating so few calories. Most of us have to be around 500 immediately after surgery, but once you are a month or so out, I think you are supposed to go up to 800-1200 a day. How are you getting in 60 g of Protein on so little? I understand about not having an appetite, but my doc says that even if I'm not hungry, it is important that I eat every couple of hours to get my metabolism reved back up. I would consult with your doctor. Krista
  16. Thanks for the feedback. Day 8 post-op. I'm down 9 pounds from last Monday. Appetite is a nonissue, however I do find myself wishing for something to actually *eat* rather than drink, but I've got another week on full liquids before I can proceed to pureed. I'm having no problems drinking copious amounts of liquids, so dehydration is not an issue. Surprisingly, even acidic drinks like Spicy Hot V8 are not causing me any discomfort, even if I drink them relatively quickly. I had my first post-op visit yesterday and we talked about V8 (since it's not on the list of approved liquids), and they said as a substitute for a meal or snack, that's fine but not to overdo it, and once I proceed to pureed foods, they prefer me to have actual blended vegetables for fibre rather than juices. In terms of calorie count, I'm at about 450-600 per day. So at this point, things are chugging along as hoped.
  17. What a decision! Im with Kaiser South Sacramento. Things movin fast! I have to drop 15lbs pre-op. Im down 10 & waiting for my Sike(physcological) Dr, appointment. They then schedule surgery and I have to lose 5 more LBS. before. Total looks like 3-4 months from start to surgery. On a 1200 calorie now. Not bad but not easy. Man I want a cheeseburger and fry or fish N chips. LOL. Good news is I want a NEW ME MORE!! I was originally sold on the lapband but have been won over by the Gastric Sleeve bypass. Lap band longterm did not appeal to me. Why go through all this to fail. Plus,Insurance only covers 1 surgery so If it failed and they had to take it out I have to pay for the next one. I also found out that It is approx. $100.00 each time they have to fill the port. Insurance wont cover. Anyway I cannot wait to get this ball a rolling. Ive been practicing chewing my food, small bites, taking my time and no liquids when I eat. Started the vitamin supplements too! My Dr. has done over 1000 surgeries with awsome success. So im comfortable. Good luck to all my other newbies!! and Pre-Oppers! Love to stay in touch and share our progress! Email anytime!

    Anyone tired on preop diet?

I felt exhausted for about four days when I started my pre-op diet. Then bounced back a bit until I had my surgery. Be sure to keep hydrated! My doctor wanted me working up to a gallon of calorie free liquids (crystal light was okay) during my pre op as well. Keep your eye on the prize!

    To Tight in the morning

I am very tight in the morning as well. I can usually sip water, hot tea, etc...then after being up for a few hours I drink a protein shake for breakfast. I usually have to eat soup, or something saucey and moist for lunch, then by dinner I can eat normally as well. I find that if I am planning to eat a meal that is full of bulk and substance like meat, salad, etc I drink a lot of water to get my stomach ready. Plus we are supposed to drink a lot of water anyways. I have noticed a decline in weight loss as well and I can only think its because I am eating more at dinner which means more calories, and then not being as active as during the day. I have had my band for over a year and I am now only going every 3-4 months for a fill, so it's not like I was just filled and got too tight.....I just have had to adjust my activity level in the evening and excercise self control at dinner. I am hoping that I see some better results like what I was experiencing before. Perhaps try that too and see how it goes....or pay a visit to the doctor. Good luck

Almost 3 yrs and I'm still amazed

Would you mind sharing what sort of food log you use? Do you plan meals? Do you use an online program for calories? Thanks. You inspire me!!!
  21. What's people's opinions on cucumbers postop? I know they're basically an empty food (and also very low calorie). But if I'm hitting all my numbers and getting plenty of protein, are cucumbers a decent filler food? I'm losing at a great rate (yes it's early I know) and I don't want to add too many calories, and would love a little texture and flavor to mix it up from my protein barrage My biggest concern is I'm only 4.5 weeks post op, and I don't know when it's appropriate to incorporate these suckers into my diet. Reading through old threads on here were really inconsistent with some people talking about eating them at 3 weeks and others 3 months, and others talking about how fun they are to digest
  22. Thanks in advance - I was banded 10/11/12 with 6 cc placed at time of surgery into my 10 cc band. I had my first fill last week - 0.2 cc. At mealtime, I can only eat about 1/2 cup, which is very satisfying. I have had no stuck episodes or PB. However, at about 2 hours after I eat, I'm ready to gnaw off my arm, so I'm having to have frequent high-protein Snacks - still staying within my daily calorie allowance, but I'd like to be satisfied for the 3-4 hours expected, rather than HAVING to eat every 2 hours or so. Do I need another fill? Thanks!

    Should I start now?

absolutely - start now! I did and I was really glad I did. I lost 57 lbs before I was rolled into the operating room. And at a BMI of 50, there's no way it's going to affect your approval. Unless you're using some really unhealthy approach to lose weight pre-surgery, you're not going to get down below a 40 (or 35) BMI by then. plus, eating better and exercising will ease you in to the post-op way of life so it won't seem so radical once you've had surgery. You'll be used to at least some of it. I started eating more protein, fewer carbs, and fewer calories post op (my dietitian had me eat 2300 or fewer calories). I also took the time to gradually wean myself off coffee and soda then - and practiced waiting 30 minutes after eating to drink anything. And I started an exercise program. I think it was very helpful and eased the transition into post-op life.
  24. A lot of people say they are tight in the morning. I am not sure really if I am or not because before breakfast I always a huge cup of hot tea which may loosen it a bit. I would say if you haven't lost since Oct.and you are more hungry now, I would get a fill. Do you keep track of your calories? Maybe you are consuming more than you think. If you end up being too tight, you can always go back in to have some taken out. That's what happened to me this week!
  25. Can I say "sucks"? Oh well...it does! Limiting the calories again is ok, because it was a chore to get them in anyway. So I am off maintenance to see how I feel about going a size or two smaller. I did just fine on maintenance, and now, well, 2 weeks into it again and I am still at the same size and up 2 lbs ...lol HMmmm.....(rubbing chin) hmmmm....don't like it at all. Feedback???
