  1. You're not alone! It's hard, even when you KNOW that it's healthy to gain some weight. I'm at 27 weeks and have managed to keep my weight gain to about 13 pounds so far. That said, my doc's visit yesterday was the first where I saw a big jump-- 5 pounds in a month. It was hard. I'm also looming up on 250, which is another mental block. I started at 322, so I KNOW I'm still WAY thinner than I was. For me, it helped to continue to plan meals and menus and workout as my body allows (starting to run into limitations there.) I don't obsessively count calories, though I check periodically to see that I'm not WAY off base. I've stuck to a moderately bandster friendly diet and have intentionally enjoyed some non-bandster favorites that don't work when my band is tight. HOWEVER, I'm eating more things like big leafy salads (light on the dressing) and raw veggies that I have trouble with otherwise. I'm enjoying a few more whole grain breads and other HEALTHY options that would otherwise give me trouble. My latest obsession is a broccoli coleslaw recipe from an online blog--I eat it by the bowl, sometimes as lunch itself. By enjoying the healthy stuff that doesn't work with the band, I feel like I'm getting a treat in exchange for the weight gain. The sugary/fatty stuff doesn't make me feel good, so I avoid it. It's hard. And depressing. And crazy-making. You're not at ALL unreasonable for finding the prospect of weight gain terrifying. But you DID THE RIGHT THING by getting the unfill! Don't forget that a good 20-25 pounds of pregnancy weight gain is baby-related, NOT counting maternal fat gain! That doesn't mean you'll be 20 pounds lighter the day after babe is born, but you'll be on your way. AND you have your band. It WILL work after baby is here! Good luck to you. There are lots of successful bandsters who have had babies, lost the weight, and gone on to reach goals. You can be one too!

    NutraNinja Duo

I used a Ninja blender to mix my Protein shakes. It had a removable attachments and I found that the single serving cup worked best for me. This is essentially what you are calling a Nutri Ninja Duo using the Nutri Ninja cups. After blending, you remove the cup from the blender turn it over, take off the blending head and screw on the sip and seal lid and you are good to go. Very convenient. Long story short - I would highly recommend it.

    Protein bars

I eat Built protein bars when I am on the go, or after a workout for a protein blast. While I do like the taste of them and they do have a candy bar-like texture, I do not find them to make me want to eat a real candy bar. They are a convenient fuel for my body. I am a bit of an exercise addict, and they are a go-to for me post workout. Unlike meat proteins, I find I can eat them pretty fast and they are just the right size to be easy on my tummy. With all of that said, it is always a good idea to check with your nutritionist. I also could not stand the taste of protein shakes early on. Try mixing with different liquids to mask the taste. Good luck!
  4. Arabesque

    Protein bars

I couldn’t tolerate protein shakes either & the so called flavourless protein powder still had a taste for me. I turned to drinking yoghurt. Yopro was my favourite & I could get 22 or 30g of protein in depending upon the amount I drank so 1/3 - 1/2 of my protein daily goal. You can make your own by blending up your favourite yoghurt with milk. Protein bars may be too heavy to eat this early on. I didn’t introduce them to my diet until I was in maintenance.

    Protein bars

Have you tried flavorless protein powder and slipping it in your foods/drinks? I know the nutritionist talked to me about that in preparation as a back up plan in case I found myself disliking the shakes.

    Day 9 of pre-op liquid

Just try to get back on track for the pre op diet. The idea is to shrink the liver. I was able to have a meal replacement for breakfast and small portions of meat and vegetable for lunch and supper (2-4 oz meat with 1/2 cup vegtable and 1/2 meal replacement) for day 1-7. Snacks were a protein bar or liquid. At 3 days prior is when I had to have only clear liquids with no caffeine or carbonated drinks. As much as I felt hungry, the idea of giving my surgeon the best conditions possible for sucessful surgery kept me focused. My nurse who prepped me for surgery said they see the pre op weight loss average of about 20lbs.
  7. I heard Dr Balder resigned from Southeast Bariatrics yesterday to start up his own Lap Band Institute in Charlotte yesterday...Thank GOD, that office was the biggest disaster that one could ever imagine!!! Trying to get in for an initial consult was ridiculous, too many rules, too much hassel!! Dr Balder gave me his cell phone number after surgery which I have not abused, but offered comfort as I can get ahold of him if needed and not have to go through all that red tape to get in to that crazy dysfunctional office! I can't wait to see him at his new and improved office...I knew from the get go that the Southeast Bariatrics office did not fit his personality. They were all about money, and themselves... Dr Balder, you'll take over Charlotte soon! Maddy

    Naked Protein Zone

Thanks so much! Just tried the protein powder from GNC (cookies and cream), gross!!! I have Isopure RTD (like gatorade, sorta) and that is hard to stomach so if I can do these, I will pay the $3 a bottle! I do worry about carbs, I think that is truly what keeps me fat!!!

    Newly banded 12/4/12

Jojo and Cassie, I had a lot of nausea post op, I pretty much lived on Gas-x and RX Nausea medication supplied by my doctor. In the days when I could only have liquids I was only able to tolerate 2 ozs or so every 2-3 hours. I felt like that was all I did and I did feel pretty week. I was banded on a Thursday and went back to work on a Monday. I thought because I worked in an office I would be fine but that first week back was really hard and I felt pretty week. My suggestion is make sure you are always sipping on some sort of SF drink in the beginning and do remember that these early days are more about healing than losing weight, that will come after your first fill. I used a lot of creamed soups and once I felt better and had less nausea I added a little unflavored protein powder to help me go a little longer between meals. I also ate a lot of thinned grits and mashed potato's and when I say thin I mean pretty watery. I was so hungry one day I decided to try a saltine cracker because they dissolve well in your mouth, wasn't a good experience for me. Just know the these early days are very hard, you have no real help from your band and you are so excited and eager to start your journey and so frustrated that you are hungry. Know that all of these feelings are normal and you are doing nothing wrong, and Cassie is correct this is the part that is referred to as "bandster hell". You also will eat and drink things during this stage that you later will consider sliders, protein drinks, yogurt, etc. I just encourage you to stay away from high calorie foods now and learn to not bring them around because unfortunately these are the foods that when nothing else goes down they always do. Good luck to both of you and I know you both will do very well.
  10. Protein. Chorizo Stuffed Poblabo Peppers 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small onion, minced 4 medium cloves garlic, minced 2/3 pound raw Mexican chorizo, removed from casings 1 1/2 cups cooked white rice (omitted) 2 medium roma tomatoes, seeded and diced 1/3 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro 1/3 cup Mexican crema, or sour cream 1/4 grated cotija cheese Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 4 large poblano peppers, halved lengthwise and seeded 1 cup shredded pepper jack cheese Heat olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add in onion and sauté until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Add in garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add in chorizo, breaking sausage into small pieces with a wooden spoon, and cook until cooked through, about 5 minutes. Transfer mixture to a large bowl. Add rice, tomatoes, crema, cilantro, and cotija cheese to bowl with meat mixture and mix until combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon mixture into cavities of split poblanos and top with pepper jack cheese. (Instead of grilling I baked @ 375 for 30 minutes.) Light one chimney full of charcoal. When all the charcoal is lit and covered with gray ash, pour out and arrange the coals on one side of the charcoal grate. Set cooking grate in place, cover gill and allow to preheat for 5 minutes. Clean and oil the grilling grate. Place poblanos on cool side of grill, cover, and cook until cheese has melted and poblanos have softened, about 20-30 minutes. Remove from grill and serve.

    Consult

From my surgeon, (and my experience) to be successful with the band you need to 1. chew each bite at least 40 times 2 eat each meal in 30 minutes...don't take longer to graze through a large meal 3. take very small bites 4. eat protein first, then veggies, then fruit, then pasta, rice, bread, grains, 5. DO NOT SNACK and 6. Dont drink any liquid 15 minutes before, during or 15 minutes after each meal. If you can do all of that, you will be successful with the band. Once you have restriction you physically CAN NOT eat fast or take bites that are too large or not chew well. At the least you will be uncomfortable for a while before you vomit back up the bite that is too large (or poorly chewed). At the worst you will hurt yourself, or turn only to foods that go down easily, (slider foods) and overeat. Either way is not good. If you can't follow those rules, the "band will fail"; but actually it won't, you will. It's a tool and you must use it. If you aren't ready or willing, it won't do you any good. If you think you can do all that, either return to your surgeon and be firm about your desire for the band, or find another surgeon. If you don't think you can do that (not everyone can; there's no shame in that at all) then the band isn't the operation for you.
  12. I have been over weight most of my life, and I have been thinking about my options lately...I have lots of questions and I live about 4 hours from the tbnc I would love to go for a consultation, but I still don't know if this is what I should be doing. I am also concerned about cost...nothing I have been reading talks about the cost, does OHIP cover any costs, I don't want to get my hopes up to only realize that I can't afford this....
  13. I only had to do a protein shakes 2 a day and one meal, today I am all clear liquids ..... I have a headache but it's because I'm hungry. I am just trying to keep busy. I have lost about 9 pounds in a week doing this. Surgery tomorrow ????
  14. Hello, I am new to the Forum....I was poking around on line as I am 6 months out and went up by 1 pound. I eat what I am supposed do but I do not drink any Protein. I do eat my protein first and veggies and have spent $100's on protein but I hate the taste of all of them. I also do not like Water but have started to incorporate eating ice all day....I walk 5 days a week and have just started (this week) doing The Phase program with Jilliam Michael.... I need 2 things some good protein ideas....I cannot stand the milk based..I have always been lactose intolerant and cannot stand milk. I also need some food ideas...I started reading lables and have found some great tasting high protein foods but after 6 months of salads for lunch and a boiled egg for Breakfast...Meat from the George Forman grill and veggies I would like some alternatives.. I find myself eating what I should not to break up the bordom..... Also, I feel like I should have lost more by now...started out at 227 and now I am at 183.3
  15. I didn't lose on the pre-op liquid diet. I lost 39 pounds prior to surgery, but only maybe five the two weeks leading up to surgery. My NUT felt it was all the sodium in the protein shakes and soup. The purpose is to shrink the liver, it still works even if you don't see pounds come off. I let my clinic know what I was doing and that the scale was not moving, this was important. Stick with the program, you will get there!
  16. The good part of the pre-op diet is that you will know which shakes you like and you have time to get a variety...trust me you will need variety in your shakes. The Bad part is stocking up on those shakes only to find out that you don't quite like the way the shake tastes post op. My taste buds didn't change post op, but others on here have had their taste buds change. Start with my fav's Syntrax's nectar or unjury, or Go with other popular ones like Isopure or Jay Robb. Make sure there is a low carb to Protein ratio, and try to get samples before you invest in a huge tub. Good luck on your pre-pre op diets!
  17. Yes, I have tried Protein bullets a few times, but the ones I tried tasted nasty and were really hard for me to get down. I prefer the milkshake-y type Protein drinks, although I am picky about the brand. I just choked down a Protein shake with a non-preferred Protein powder, and I would almost prefer a really nasty protein bullet, at least I could get that down more quickly, LOL! But I love my Champion Nutrition Pro-Score 100 chocolate flavor, yummy! Do you have any brands of protein bullet that you would recommend? Kathy
  18. There was more swelling on the side where the drain fell out, but it is clear that there is/was swelling on both sides.... ... Well the saga continues... I went back to the doctor today and he took 8 more syringes of Fluid out of me, until he couldn't get any more, but it was clear that there was still fluid in there. He thinks there may be multiple pockets, and he is not able to fully drain me without any visual indicator of where the fluid is. So long story short, I am going back to the hospital on Friday, and will go under fluorosocopy (like x-ray) so they will be able to visualize the fluid, suck me dry, and then put in a new drain that is able to drain any future accumulation from any and all fluid pockets. The other thing my doctor asked me is about my Protein intake. Now normally I am very good about that because I eat a Protein shake for Breakfast every day. But lately I ran out of my favorite Protein powder (which I order online from vitalady) and so I had been getting sloppy about protein intake. He says that even if you are feeling fine on an overall level, the cells may be struggling to rebuild without sufficient protein. So I wonder if that has contributed to my problem. Anyway, I have bought some protein powder from a local retail store and will order my favorite today so it should arrive soon. Anyway, that's the latest.

    Banded just yesterday!!!

Welcome to BandLand!!!!!!!!!!! The first few days after surgery, just be kind to yourself. Walk when you can. Keep your incisions clean - unless they have that glue on them .. I had that.... It's all so new. You think you know how you'll feel, and what you'll do, but you have to remember, your band will control all that for you soon. Read as much as you can on the Forum, I'd be LOST without everyones posts - letting me know what to expect. There's no way the Dr's office will ever tell anyone what's really going to happen. Sounds easy - a 4 week clear liquid diet. I made it 3 weeks? It's so important to drink your Protein, and your Water. I am so sad about my inability to get all the water in, have to keep trying daily to remember to do it. Repeat after me: "I will not look at everyones numbers and compare myself". They told us 2 pounds a week... this ain't gastric.

    2week liquid diet starts today

I dreaded mine so very much. Freaking dreaded it. When it came time, it wasn't horrible like I thought. I could have five protein shakes a day and I was fine. The hardest part was the head hunger. I just wanted something to eat for the sake of eating. I never was starving. If I felt hungry I had a sugar free popsicle. You will do well!!!

    Sick of shakes

Isopure liquid. So much better than the powdered protein and a lot more convenient. I like the alpine punch the best. Comes in 20 oz bottles which have 40 grams protein. These are 2 serving bottles. I wish I had found these early on. I hated the protein powders. I tried many of them and wasted my money. Vitamin shoppe has these.

    Restriction - vets please answer

I can eat more than I want to be able to - probably at least a cup of food, maybe more depending on what it is. At 13 months out, my restriction is not what it was at 2 months, 6 months, or 9. I also know I THINK I can eat more than I really can. While I'm not suggesting you eat in the quantities you mentioned, have you actually done that? (I hate to admit it, but a time or two I just let myself eat what I wanted, and I was surprised that it wasn't as much as I thought I could). There is a cottage cheese test that you can do to help figure out your actual capacity, which might help give you some perspective. Someone on these boards once said to me "just because you, doesn't mean you should". Obvious, right? But it stuck with me, so I don't rely solely on restriction. I also have to weigh and measure my food to keep thing in correct portions. As for getting your restriction back, I don't know the answer to that. In my case, I've found that when I intentionally decrease my intake to small amounts for a few days, the restriction does seem to improve for me. All along it seemed like there were some days I felt more restriction than others for no apparent reason. Also, starting with dense Protein is sort of the only "magic bullet" I've found. It really does help to decrease my intake. I tried the 5:2 a little, and after a fast day, my restriction seemed better. Lately I've been restricting intake to just 8 hours a day, and that really seems to increase restriction for me. So, regardless of my capacity, I still have had to change my habits in order to be successful. If I relied on that, I'd still weigh 305 pounds because we can all snack on calorie dense food all day, never feel full, and pack on the pounds. I'd also suggest discussing this with your team. They may be able to give you some other perspective.

    WTH?

I do have this happen occasionaly. I cannot explain it but what works today for food might not work tomorrow yet it could work again next week. Also when I have one of those days, I pretty much try going back to Protein shakes to ensure I get as much protein as possible. It is weird but I have read posts from others who experience the same thing. I hope you feel better soon!
  25. I was told to stay away from yogurt, oatmeal, pasta and sweets. Stick with eggs, lowfat cheese, turkey sausage, lean proteins, any berry type fruits.
