Any Long Island, NY sleevers?
Caaattt replied to laurasjourney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's very hard !!!!! I was just put on mushy/soft foods and I don't even want to eat. I am not getting in enough protein though !!! My nut said in order to get the weight coming off you have to get it in! Thus why I haven't lost for a week. It's def a decision I don't regret. Are you excited ??? -
Hello all, I'm 6 days post op Gastric bypass, and I am never ever hungry. I've been forcing myself to eat a few sips of Protein shakes and some sugar free Jello. The thought and action of eating makes me physically nauseous. I've been taking my anti nauseous medicine, but I don't feel like eating at all. I've been trying to get my fluids in...I generally do okay. I guess I just wanted to know if this is something everyone deals with or if it's normal? ❤️8/17/16

Long term vsg food consumption
dashofsunshine replied to Scott83's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 1.5 years out and there is absolutely no way I would be able to eat a steak dinner in 6 more months, or for a very long time, if ever. I still max out at 4 oz of anything, sometimes sooner with really dense protein. -
As a person with a history of pain pill abuse, I want you to know that there is nothing wrong with taking your pain medication AS PRESCRIBED. I know that you're afraid of slipping back into addiction and that's a valid fear. My personal solution is to have my SO help keep me accountable and if I feel myself slipping, I have him lock the meds up and give them to me as needed. This is what has worked for me, I don't know if that would be an option for you. I do know, however, that pain that is uncontrolled can impede healing. I wish you the best!

Grams of protein per day
Josh2xh replied to Josh2xh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jedi. The only way I have met my Protein goal is with ISO pure 40g and pure protein 35g (looks the same as premier protein). But it's getting harder and harder to get these things down. It's looks like 60 - 80 grams seems to be the norm though. The NUT didn't do any calculations based on my weight either or height. She just said 110g. Maybe I need to investigate this gurgling feeling in my gut. I might be hungrier if that went away. -

Need advice on calories- 8 months out
mismis19 replied to mismis19's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How far are you out from surgery? So would you say that you keep your body in a constant state of ketosis? Are you foing that for just weightloss or maintaining? I am 5'9 and 238lbs right now. Would you say 60-80g of protein or how are you figuring your macros? Thank you for the help too! -
There's no way, physiologically or otherwise, that you can gain 6 pounds of true fat after one or two so-called "cheat days." 6 pounds of fat gain would have required you to consume and store 21,000 excess calories as body fat. It cannot happen in a couple of days. What is happening is water gain due to consumption of too many starches. Eating too many carbohydrates without enough physical activity will cause bloat. Foods with a high carbohydrate level cause the body to store three times as much water compared to protein. This storage is in the form of glycogen, which requires a considerable amount of water. The end result of eating too many carbs without enough activity is water weight gain, at least in susceptible people. In carb-sensitive people, carbohydrate loading (a.k.a. "cheating") causes fluid retention that results in a lot of temporary water weight gain. Recall that the liver utilizes water as it creates and stores glycogen from all the carbs one eats. Thus, water weight gain will show up on the scale as a heavier weight. I do not have cheat foods or cheat days. If I want a slice of pizza or a cheeseburger or taco, I eat it. Since I have no forbidden foods, I have minimal desire to go off the rails. "Cheat days" are a part of the dieter mentality. I sucked at diets; therefore, I am not on a diet. As long as that burger can be worked into my daily calorie budget, it is not a cheat food for me.

One month Sleeveiversary...
juju79 replied to Gracy0721's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried Nectar? It is the only protein that I can stomach and it's yummy. It taste like juice. So far I've had the grape juice flavor and fuzzy navel and really like both. -
What is it like?

I assume they do stand behind the doctor being the coordinator listed it as a finance option but mymedicalloan is also on that list and I have heard horrible things about that place. This is for Dr. Aceves in Mexicali for my revision from band to sleeve. My next option will be Dr. Garcia in Tijuana.

When I originally started the pre-op diet back on August 1st I had a hard time concentrating on anything but food. I felt like the world was going to end if I couldn't shove things in my mouth. However, today was much easier. I don't know if it was easier because I knew what to expect or if it was the fact that I have a surgery date and there is no wiggle room. The dietitian called today to remind me to fill out my food tracker, set up some appointments to come in and weigh. Oh and surprise, I have more paperwork and videos to complete. Anyways, she sounded very annoyed when she asked what date I started the diet on. I explained that I was on it but had gotten off the diet and had started back today. I didn't have the energy to explain why I had stopped, which I should have because she got a major attitude with me. She informed me that I had to stay on it and that there could be no cheating because if on the day of surgery my liver wasn't small enough the surgeon would close me back up and I wouldn't have surgery. Either way, I am not going to let her bother me, I know that I can do this, and that my liver will be appropriate size on the day of surgery. I can say that I did manage to go all day without cheating. I had a grilled chicken salad for dinner tonight, but did have about 10 potato chips. All and all a good day. Tomorrow I am definitely going to have some coffee, which is allowed, just without real cream and sugar, I will suffer through it though to avoid another major headache like this. I did drink no less than 6 bottles of water today, which means I will be a zombie tonight making my many trips to the bathroom in the wee hours of the morning. I might have lied last night when I mentioned that I would post my before pics today and my beginning weight today. It seems that I have chickened out, they are some really bad pictures and whats more personal than my actual weight?! I've decided to wait and post my pictures when I have something to post with them, showing a loss. And I will also report the weight as soon as I have a loss, (fingers crossed that will be tomorrow). Hope that is a suitable compromise. Anyways, tomorrow I will have lots of info to report after my appointment with Dr. Hollis. I need to get more protein powder, so my mental debate between now and then will be do I buy the high priced stuff from his office or just use the regular old whey protein you can purchase at Wal-Mart. Either way, "food" for thought. Until tomorrow, Amanda

Surgery in 2 weeks. Should I start buying protein shakes and vitamins now?
lsereno replied to ProudMama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would call the Dr's office and get a shopping list together for recommended foods and Vitamins for the first two weeks post op. I would get just enough Protein powders to take you through a few days because you won't feel like shopping right after surgery. Maybe you can order samples sizes and have them on hand then you can order or buy more of what you like post-op. Lynda -
Did you take your multi-Vitamin, b12, b-1 (or whatever your doctor/NUT suggested) while on your pre-op diet? They wanted me to go ahead and start taking them. I RARELY get sick/nauseas, but I took my Vitamins about an hour after my Protein shake this morning and within 3 mins was vomiting. I'm almost scared to try again... I don't think I can get a "full stomach" on this liquid diet. And what does this mean for after the surgery, lol? What are you all doing?

Unjury Protien; What's your favorite flavor?
Miss.Bunny447 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today I was trying to decide what Protein drink I wanted buy that is on my surgeon approved list. I looked over the list (a whopping 4 choices) and it seems that unjury is the most affordable and also contains a lot of protein, which will help me reach my protein goals easier. So to those of you who have tried it. What is your favorite flavor? I personally lean more towards chocolate flavors for my Protein shakes. But it seems that they have a classic chocolate and chocolate splendor. I'm just wondering which of the two is less sweet. I hate when things are overpoweringly sweet. I know if I can't handle it pre op that I won't be able to handle it post op! And if I like the chocolate Unjury, I might order some more flavors based off of some of your guys feedback, so let's hear it! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Unjury Protien; What's your favorite flavor?
kmorri replied to Miss.Bunny447's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I liked the chocolate splendor (I think is what they called it).......but also enjoyed the chicken flavor because you get really tired of all the sweet stuff.....I bought strawberry and never even opened it........If you lived near me I'd give you these three containers I have....hahaha I don't have to do any Protein drinks anymore. -
Nausea on Pre-op diet
c_minta_1117 replied to Rommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 2 of my preop diet and I agree, it doesn't feel great. Ive been drinking herbal tea and low sodium/low fat broth in between protein shakes (both are ok on my plan). The warm liquids seem to help. BTW, you're doing a great thing for yourself! Hope you get some relief! -
Thank goodness...I seriously worried about you all day yesterday. NO being too tight will not lead to faster weightloss...It will lead to all sorts of problems though. My bet is after an initial bit of weight gain (1-3 pounds) of your body getting back to its proper nutritional state that they weight will start coming off if you can eat the solid proteins and veggies. Please do not hesitate to PM me if you ever need to chat or get suggestions. So glad you are feeling better. Welcome to the life that a bandster SHOULD be living! You had to have thought banded life was hell!

So, there I am, scheduled for Mr. Band on Nov 14th, thinking I had a couple weeks before pre-op diet to have a couple nice steaks. Yesterday morning I get a call.... SURPRISE, we've rescheduled your surgery for Oct 29th, you need to start your pre-op diet tomorrow (which is today now). Holy horsesnot Batman, I'm totally unprepared. Well, am I as unprepared as I thought.... I quit drinking pop Aug 17th, unsweetened tea since then, tapering off the caffeine each day by watering down the tea more and more. Started trying different Protein shakes in early September to find one I liked, been having them for Breakfast and lunch for about a month now. Found out that Syntha-6 Isolate, chocolate Milkshake, is the f'ing bomb and is my shake of choice. So... today, had 3 Protein Shakes thus far, and am allowed 4 per day, and zero caffeine - Water only. That only totals 660 calories, can this be right? Holy hippo turds Batman, that's not very many calories Maybe I'm not as unprepared as I thought, but I need your help.... I'm allowed beef/chicken broth, sugar free candy/gum and sugar free popsicles. Can you tell me some good brands of these items? Thanks to all who participate in this site and make it such a valuable tool!!!!

Not losing a great deal of weight on the pre-op diet
madferitchick replied to C2CFOREVER's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I'm in the uk too. Despite my dietician telling me I had to eat the carbs on my pre op diet, I didn't as I knew that would severely limit my weight loss. So I cut out the carbs and substituted with green veggies and a little more lean protein and lost 12lb in the two weeks. Dietician and surgeon were very pleased, and I just kept it to myself that I'd modified things a bit! I have pcos and I know my body and carbs are my biggest problem in preventing weight loss. The one size fits all approach from dietitians in the uk (low fat and whole grain carbs) does not work for everyone! -
Pre-Op Diet: Horribly Sick
Queen_Bee replied to curlyinthecity's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I use the Jay Robb egg white Protein, and Jay Robb Whey protein isolate. You can find it at GNC. It's 25g of protein per shake. Additionally, you should investigate the sweeteners used in the shakes. I found out I am highly intolerant of sucralose, which almost everything that you buy flavored, is sweetened with. I found out I can actually do whey protein *isolate*, as long as there is no sucralose. Premier shakes are full of sucralose. Good luck! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Feeling full
Arabesque replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could possibly reduce your protein since you’re in maintenance & it’s very filling & up your vegetable intake. Daily requirement in the US is 0.8g protein per kilo you weigh so you could reduce your intake to about 50g. But check with your surgeon & dietician first. (My dietician said I needed a little more because of my age so I work at 1-1.2g protein per kilo of weight.) I can eat more now than I did at 6 months & more than I did at 12 months. To get my calories in to maintain (about 1200+/-) I feel like I eat all day long. I snack about 4 times a day on dairy, fruit & multi/whole grains in addition to my three meals. I also still take ages to eat: 30-40+ mins for breakfast & dinner & about an hour for lunch but it does enable me to eat a little more. Are you still leaving time between when you eat & drink? Have you tried plant based proteins? I believe they can be easier to digest & may not upset you or fill you as much. I really think you need to have a conversation with your surgeon & then your dietician because you’ve been struggling so much. -
4 Months Out, 17 lbs to Goal.... Am I Done Losing?
Teachamy replied to niassy151's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Are you eating maintenance calories now? I think I am more or less maintaining right now, eating between 900-1000 calories a day. But I haven't weighed in about a month at my bariatric center. I've weighed in at other doctor appts. and seem to be maintaining based on their scales. But looking back at my log, i've noticed my carbs creeping up a bit lately, so I am heading back to basics and eating about 800-900 a day. I know plateaus happen when one is as close to goal as we are--but I would say keep plugging away at it. Log everything, get your protein and water, and if you are exercising like crazy, make sure you are eating enough calories. -
Lapband removal/bypass insurance approval
amvg85 replied to amvg85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only lost 30 lbs with the lap band (had it in for 1 year). I then developed massive Reflux (I actually had stopped taking nexium for 6 months...then it got so bad I was stuck drinking EAS protein drinks and my med was upped to Dexalant (a stronger more expensive drug for Reflex..which still doesn't cut it). My Dr. Thinks I have scarred tissue around the band area and wants to remove it to give me 6-8 weeks before bypass (without anything). Today I am having the band out...I am so scared to be without anything but I plan on eating healthy and working out (for this week it will be lots of walking)...My Dr seemed to think bypass is a better it for me (when they reroute your stomach you will not have Reflex at all) and He thinks I will be more successful in my weight loss journey....I am 250lb now and have approx 110 lbs to lose...I got this! -
I'm getting banded on July 26th and my doctor only requires a week of dieting before surgery. It's a clear liquid only diet and was told to get a clear liquid Protein drink. All I can find are colored shakes. Anyone have any idea of what I can get? Thanks Darci Shannon
