  1. Hey y'all. I'm a little less than a month away from my endoscopy. My doc said basically if I'm clear anywhere from 2 weeks after that I can get my gastric bypass. In the meantime while I wait, I struggle with depression. I know that everything is coming so soon but I can't help but feel scared and stuck. I don't know who else to talk to about this. I feel like I should be happy and excited but I'm overwhelmed and scared of failure before it even begins. I don't know if I need support or tough love but I'm really struggling to stay grounded. I'm just venting but if you have any advice or positive/success stories you want to share, I'd love to hear it. Thanks and hope you all are doing well. 4. Nov 19th. Mini gastric bypass…
  5. It's been 2008 since I had a very successful surgery. Seriously, I swam in SF Sharkfest from Alcatraz to SF 2 yrs in a row. As I've gotten older, I have learned a few things I'd like to pass on to those who might not know this. Someone who has had bariatric surgery can only drink 5 oz of alcohol (wine/beer) and then they are legally drunk (trust me, you look act like you have had way too many drinks--slurred speech, staggering, falling down) and if you were to blow into a breathalyzer, you would get a reading indicating you are inebriated. Although I hadn't had anything to drink in about 30 yrs, during a few social dinners at our house, I had a small glass of wine and then my husband wanted to know just how much I had had to drink. When I say, "Not even one glass of wine," I was in such bad shape that he didn't believe me. He was furious and told me I wasn't to have any more drinks for the night. This also happened at my son's who was just livid with me and told me to go to a spare bedroom for the rest of the night. And, truly, I felt super drunk. At some point, I did some research and learned that because of how small my stomach pouch is and the way liquids are absorbed, I really shouldn't even have a sip of alcohol. Just thought I'd pass that on. Also, I originally lost 137 lbs to get to my goal weight. I maintained it for several years because I was working out regularly. A few yrs ago I started to put some weight back on, mostly because I wasn't exercising as much, I was alone ALL the time because of Covid because my husband was in contact with Covid infected people at the hospital he worked at 5 shifts a week for 1 yr and 9 months until his last day was Nov. 1. My diet wasn't as healthy and we were sleeping in different bedrooms on separate floors because he was so afraid he would test positive and give it to me. All last year, from July through May 29th when I had left hip replacement, I swam in a local lake for 1 hr each session...2x-4x a week with water getting down to 40 degrees. That kept me sane. Both of us have had our Covid vaccination shots and booster shots and I'm back in swimming in the cold water. If you have gained weight during the pandemic, just go through every day thankful and get back on the post-surgery diet your doctor put you on. (Currently, mine is 1200 cal, unless I burn over 900 swimming and only then do I get to add on 300). Even though I was afraid I had "stretched" my stomach pouch (I'll be 68 yrs old in a few weeks), I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy a month ago and the gastroenterologist said everything looks perfect.
  6. RNY Gastric Bypass is usually the best surgical technique for people who have heartburn or GERD. It usually eliminates those issues and type II diabetes. Are you drinking or eating too quickly? Try slowing down to sips or tiny bites well chewed.
  7. Scheduled for a mini gastric bypass this Friday, the 19th. Trying today to get a list together of everything I need as far as new foods and drinks so I can have it all in house by then. Confusing with so many different sites/people saying different things or mentioning different products. I would really appreciate any help or sites that kind of lay it out in simple terms. I've been given a lot of paperwork from the doctor and hospital and met with the hospital's bariatric person. Just ordered disposable medicine cups and case of Ensure Max Protein (suggested by Dr.'s PA) Also bought a bag of Bariatric Advantage Calcium Chews and Bariatric Fusion Multivitamins from them to start out on but will source out equivalent products that may be less expensive during my week off next week. Any tips or things to watch out for are welcome. Thanks in advance!
  8. Scheduled for a mini gastric bypass this Friday, the 19th. Trying today to get a list together of everything I need as far as new foods and drinks so I can have it all in house by then. Confusing with so many different sites saying different things or mentioning different products. I'm a single man and have to handle this alone and would really appreciate any help or sites that kind of lay it out in simple terms. I've been given alot of paprerwork from the doctor and hospital and met with the hospital's bariatric person. Guess how I feel afterwards will dictate what I drink the 1st few days or week, but still unsure of how often and what is allowed or suggested as a whole. Thanks in advance
  9. Reflux happens to many people after the sleeve. I get it if I eat too quickly or if I wait too long between times eating. Call your surgeon. There are stronger medications you can take. Some people do have a revision to gastric bypass to resolve it but usually only after medication can’t resolve it.
  10. Hi 7 years ago I had a sleeve gastrectomy, I had a great result and kept the weight off till this year where I have rapidly regained around half of my loss of 100lbs. I am considering a revision to MGB. I was wondering how it 'FEELS' - do you feel full in the same way as you did with your sleeve? How was recovery compared to your sleeve? Theres a lot of info I can find on results and toleration of foods but I'm curious to know if it 'feels' any different to you? Thanks in advance! Suzanne x

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello! Had my sleeve 9th November, doing fairly well so far but finding it hard to get in my liquid and protein - something works for me and I try again and can't seem to tolerate. Guess it's all trial and error though.

    October surgery friends??

I had my bypass on Oct. 5. I honestly feel this have been the worse decision but each day is getting better. I just can’t wait for the day where I am out of the post op depression rut and be happy about my decision. Soooo aggravating! Cheers to all of you!
  14. I'm a little surprised they didn't recommend the bypass, either. I was an older patient as well, but because of my GERD history, my surgeon recommended the bypass (although he said he'd do either one). I hope this gets better for you - yikes! I'm sorry to hear this.

    Hospital essentials

sounds like you've got it covered. Everything was provided for me as well - I just brought my phone and charger and some Chapstick and Biotene spray (I don't remember if I used them or not - but a lot of people do). And comfy, easy-to-put on clothes for the ride home (I just wore the same thing home that I did to the hospital). and yes, bypass patients usually spend the night. Sleeve patients, too. I've heard of some cases where people (I think sleeve) have just been there for the day, but it doesn't sound like that's very common. I'd plan on having to spend the night there.
  16. Hi I'd been waiting for my OP for a couple of years had two pre ops and then covid hit so that was another year and a half wait and on the 28th of July got a phone call they was doing my OP 23rd August so everything was a rush to get bloods done an iron infusion to get to the hospital in the morning for 7.30 then the surgeon came up to tell me I might no have it done because he needed an assistant anyway 10 minutes later I had surgery the next day I thought what have I done to myself 10 weeks post OP and I feel brilliant not sure how much I've lost till the end of November but I will let you all know
  17. I'd love a list of things I need, and a list of things I won't need at the hospital. Last time was 2010, I can't remember everything. Seems like chap stick is good. A night gown and robe was not necessary, one was provided. Mouthwash, toothpaste and toothbrush. Panties, lose sweat pants and shirt to wear home. Do bypass patients stay over night? I remember someone told me to take a pillow to put between me and the seatbelt. Great advice. The pillow was also good in case I needed to cough or sneeze!!! Any more ideas?
  18. he told me it would be gone after the hernia was removed. the gastritis wasn't from the GERD though. he never really mentioned bypass to me. however, I am somewhat prone to hypoglycemia which is why I didn't go for RNY, also the sleeve seemed safer for my age. his surgical coordinator told me they told really do bypass in his office anymore

    Acid Reflux Issue

I’m sorry you’ve developed Barrett’s because of your reflux. I used to manage a lot of my pre surgery bypass through diet modification. No spicy food, reduced caffeine, reduced carbonated drinks, reduced fats, avoided rich or creamy food. They were things that would aggravate my reflux. It helped a lot & I only took Nexium when I had an attack & I’d go months between attacks. I still ate meat & dairy (not a lot of dairy because I had some lactose issues) as no one ever suggested reducing or avoiding them. But your doctor may have reasons for advising you not to. For years I also slept with the head of my bed on bricks (can’t do it with an ensemble) so my whole body would be on a slope. Just sleeping on extra pillows will bend your neck more & the rising stomach acid then pools in your oesophagus. Because I have reflux everyday now my surgeon also suggested not eating dense protein or dense foods a couple of hours before bed as your stomach will produce more acid to breakdown that dense food. (I take Nexium everyday now & am still careful with my dietary choices.) I found this basic info on Barrett’s & diet options as a starting point but I would ask your doctor for more dietary advice &/or a recommendation to a good dietician. https://www.healthline.com/health/barretts-esophagus-diet#foods-to-eat
