  1. Hello, I'm sem1126, I had my surgery 5-29-2007, my starting weight was 252. my body mass was 63.7 which is a lot for my 5'4 frame. I have gotten down as far as 206. but I had some events in my life that has made me make some bad decision. My husband was mobilized for 2 year and then my child left to attend college out of town. I was alone and i started my bad decisions (as far a eating) now i have picked up 30 pounds. This is not the best introduction, but i seeking help to get back track in getting this weight off. so i will be waying for your encouragement on my journey.
  2. I recently met with my dietician because I was not losing weight at a steady pace. She says that a low carb, high Protein diet is the best. I am still eating mushy foods since my last fill so I either eat an egg lightly scrambled with a little salsa or 2 tablespoons of low fat cottage cheese with a teaspon of low sugar strawberry preserves. Both of these meals are around 110 calories and pretty filling. For lunch, I usually eat a cup of Soup that I make on the weekends using low fat meat and lots of vegetables. The soup is about 300 calories. For dinner I eat one lean cuisine. There are many choices out there and they are not too bad. I find myself not finishing the whole meal so I always start with the vegetables first. This meal is usually about 300 calories. I then have a snack before bed. I eat Kozy's Tapioca pudding with Splenda. I just found this snack and I love it. It has only 90 calories. All these together keeps me under 900 calories. This should keep me at a steady pace of 2 to 3 lbs of weight loss a week. Hope this helps. Helen

  4. Hi everyone. I have always wanted to do the 3 day breast cancer walk, but because I was so big I knew that I would never be able to complete it. Well...this is a new year. I have committed to completing the 60 mile walk. I have lost almost 80 pounds and I know that I can do it. My aunt is a breast cancer survivor so it makes me even more excited to take on this committment. I will be doing the walk in Washington DC in October. I am in the beginning stages of raising money (I have to raise at least $2,200). If anyone is interested in donating on my behalf, you can do so through my site at: Welcome to the Washington DC Breast Cancer 3-Day: Also, if you are in my area and are interesting in joining me for training walks, let me know!!! My personal goal is to be at my "weight loss goal" by the time of the walk. Wish me luck!!!!

    Weight Watchers

Hello, yes I follow a more high protein Weight Watchers type plan. I still have the points system in my head and cannot get around wanting to do this type of planning. I do reach for higher protein and try to stay with-in my point range. I also keep a daily track of my eating in there books as I have been for many many years. I love WW it's a good soild healthy plan to me!! How about you what are you doing and is it working for you as well? Cynthia

  7. I got banded on Jan 11, 2010, the day Haiti got hit with the Earthquake. Wish the significance of that event would have carried over to my weight lost, but it never happened. I started at 285 with a BMI of 44. I got down to 238 in less then 5 months with a BMI of 38, gained a few pounds and lost a few more. Saw my Surgeon monthly and had a small fill added almost every month. I have the large band and I am not yet filled to the max. I have gained back about 7 pounds and now am holding around 250. I`m still happy that I am 35 pounds lighter then where I started but I have to admit, despite daily walking and bicycling, I have NOT kept my eye on the ball. I tend to eat too large portions, have not eliminated carbs and bread like I should have and continue to drink a few pints of beer daily. I have reduced my soft drink consumption drastically as well as seltzer water. They warned me before Surgery about "Head Hunger" and that the Lap Band was simply a Tool. They were right. I would say, if you don`t have the will power or discipline before the Surgery, It is unlikely that a few gagging or sliming episodes will get one to dig their heals in to take control. It still helps to avoid binge eating and really pigging out but Pizza, Wings, Burgers, Chips, Beer, etc will still be flirting with you as long as you live.

    Not Loosing/ Or High Expectations

Don't give up hope. My pre-surgery weight was 209 and it came off rather quickly. It all depends on your metabolism. If you think your metabolic rate is slow, then do what you have to do to speed it up. Search the internet for solutions. Plus, the slower it comes off, the better off you skin will be. Your skin will have more time to adapt and will create less hanging skin. That is a big plus! Your doing just fine. Try not to worry or compare yourself to others losses.

    Not Loosing/ Or High Expectations

Hang in there! I lost a bunch of weight at first, but I was in the hospital for almost a month. Suddenly the scale's stopped moving (grrr right whenever I'm almost below 200, dang it).... but I just have to be patient.

    Not Loosing/ Or High Expectations

my first visit I was at 381, then lost 20 lb's pre op, and surgery day was at 361, at my 1 week follow up I had lost 23 lb's and was at 338, now tomorrow I'm at my 3 week mark, and have only lost an add'l 5-6 pounds, since then, I did go back to work, start working out 3-4 times a week, and have started some small portions of solids, fish, chicken, egg whites, but nowhere near not being able to lose, 2 meals a day are musclemilk, shakes, and cytomax protein drinks, did I start w/ solids too fast, is this just a temp lull? I have 100 lbs' to go and dont want to think that this is it, I know I'm prolly panicking as it is only the 3 week mark, anyone else experience a slow down in weight loss?

    Too much weightloss

I'm below my original goal, but in a healthy BMI and weight range for my height. My husband and I both feel I am a bit too skinny, but apparently this is where my body is happy. I'm not having any issues with maintenance at this point, and all I did to get the weight loss to stop was to add more calories, and carbs. I went from 600-800 calories to 1500-1800 calories per day. Carbs were no more than 30gr per day, now I consume around 70-100gr per day depending on what I choose to eat. A lot of my carbs come from fruits and veggies, and a minimum of a white carbs, but I do eat breads, rice, Pasta, and potatoes. I was really worried back in February and March when I was still sporadically losing a few pounds here and there. Now, I bounce between 121-125lbs on any given day. Today, I happen to weigh 123lbs, but tomorrow it'll be different.

    3 Month Supervised Diet Question

I was told to lose between 12-25 lbs and I lost 30. They really didn't seem to care how much weight I lost.

  14. Greetings everyone! I just wanted to share my experience. I was banded first time in 2006 with a 4cc band. Everything went well aside from sliming, food getting stuck & vomiting. I figured this was just the price to pay to finally be able to lose weight once & for all. I lost 50 lbs (not quite goal) but I was so happy to lose weight successfully. At my lowest weight I started having horrible reflux at night. I would wake up choking on burning stomach acid (sorry for the gross factor). It was not only painful, but scary. Apparently my band had slipped. From what I understand this is common for the 4cc band. So the process of removal of fluid over months began until I had no restriction. The hope was the the band would correct itself which it did not. The decision was a new band. I got a 10cc band a little over a year ago and have since gained all of my weight back!!! I can't begin to tell you how discouraging this has been. I know that it isn't totally the band to blame because as my disappointment in my new band grew I stopped exercising and ate "bad" foods. Since may 2009 I have had several fills. At one point I was too restricted and could barely keep anything down. For some reason I cannot find the sweet spot with this new band like I did with the old one. I go in for yet another fill and I am going to talk to dr. about a sleeve. My insurance has been very good about everything so far, but we know how insurance companies are ;0. I know that there isn't a perfect surgery, but from what I can tell the sleeve offers the benefits of a band yet without complications of bypass (which I would never consider). Thanks for listening!!
  15. Hi all! Just needed a little encouragement. I just got denied (first time) for my VGS because I gained eight pounds during my three-month supervised weight loss. The reason I gained weight is that I was a "lightweight" at 205/5'2 and my nutritionist told me not to lose too much weight or I might be denied. Eight pounds isn't a big deal, I know, and they said I just need to come in and weigh when I have lost that. So now I think I'm going to try to practice the liquid liver-shrinking diet I'll need to do pre-surgery to drop those pounds. It's day one and only breakfast and I am starving, lol. Any tips or tricks to get yourself through the liquid diet? TIA.
  16. So, here I am one month post-sleeve...lost 22 pounds since then. But over the weekend went out with friends...tried to make smart choices...indulged a little bit, and am now up 0.8 pounds. I am very frustrated with myself. I find that if I am out to eat anywhere outside my home that it's a challenge to find foods that are soft enough, lean enough, low in fat/carbs/salt, and that I actually like (life long finicky eater). Seems like almost everything is so carb-heavy, so rich, and so salty! I also find it very hard to eat slowly enough and take small bites when I don't eat in isolation. It takes so long to eat, and I'm worried how I'll manage when I start back to work. Has anyone else dealt with these issues? How have you overcome them? I want very much to continue losing weight so I can be a healthier, happier, better me! Maybe 0.8 pounds doesn't sound like much, but it's the wrong direction, and I worked my ass off to lose it! I am hopeful some of this is Water retention due to salt, and maybe because I've not been getting my exercise due to being away from my exercise equipment while I'm recovering...I'm staying with my parents in the Pacific Northwest and rainy season is here...I so hate to walk in the rain. Thoughts?

    From the album: A progression!

Maybe two years ago. Pretty heavy but not quite hitting three hundred mark. This is about my max of what I felt was acceptable for myself. I've always been the big girl and it wasn't a big deal to me at the time... with recent 25 pound weight loss this is semi-accurate of how I'm looking as of 8/14/12
  18. Change up your routine. Your body may have gotten used to the same routine every day. How many calories do you average a day? If more than 1,500, try cutting it down to 1,300. If less than 1,000, try adding 200 calories. Make sure you are drinking at least 64 ounces of Water a day. You've lost 50 pounds!! You should be jumping for joy! Keep your chin up. It took time to put the weight on, it takes time to take it off.
  19. Hello, everyone! Just wanted to post my first thread on here and introduce myself. I finally got a surgery date of 2/9/10 after 18 months of pre-op requirements and 2 appeals to the insurance. Grrrr! I am so excited and can't wait to utilize this site for the much needed support that I am going to need. Wish me luck! Thanks, Lynn P.S. I created a weight loss ticker, but how do you put it on your thread? Help, please.

    Timing

I’ve been reading your postings and am wondering how you are doing with your weight loss? I am at the beginning of the VSG process and am still in the research for a doctor phase. I saw that you traveled for your procedure. Since I am self-pay too, the few doctors in the Orlando area offer outpatient only. I would feel much more comfortable with a hospital stay included. Would you mind sharing your self-pay experience and benefits. Thank you.
  21. I get banded on Wednesday! I'm so excited to get this tool to help me out with losing weight. My pre program weight was 275. My current weight is 253. I can't wait to start losing more weight Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Loose skin

If you do a search on this topic you will find hundreds of posts on this topic. I know as a newbie loose skin and hair loss were two of the biggies that concerned me. I recently went back and posted a picture of myself 11 months out from surgery exposing all of my goods on an thread titled - "My top 10 ways to prevent loose skin." I'm convinced genetics and how long you spent over weight have the most influence on whether or not you will have excess skin. I also was a sloooow loser. I once read it takes skin 2-3 months to adjust every time you lose. There were times my thighs look horrific and a few months later they snapped back into place. If you lose too much too quickly, your skin may newer fully snap back. My loose skin is limited to my lower stomach. I have had two very large babies and my lower abdomen had Freddy Kruger stretch marks on it. There is no way that's going back to normal without a tummy tuck! There's likely some tell-take signs you will have loose skin in areas. For example, if you have fat pockets that start right above your elbows, you will probably have bat wings. I carried most of my excess weight in my mid-section, so it doesn't surprise me this is where I have excess skin. It doesn't look bad standing up, but when I bend over, I look like I would whelp a litter of puppies! What I can tell you is part of this journey is accepting our new bodies. I decided to post a pic of myself exposed because I noticed most people are wearing pants and long shirts in their after photos on this site. It always made me wonder what was lurking underneath. Many of us will be left with more excess skin than what we are comfortable with. Some can afford plastics. Many cant. Regardless, I wouldn't trade the new active lifestyle I live for anything. For reference, I am a woman in my mid-40's. 5'7" and was 241 at my heaviest. I was 226 the day of surgery. I was 152 when I took this picture a few days ago. I am currently 7 pounds away from my stretch goal of 145. I haven't exercised with much consistently during the 11 months post surgery. I took this photo as my "before" picture and hope to see how tone I can get after I start doing squats, sit-ups, and lifting weights! I have to say I'm a tad more motivated now that I can actually SEE my muscles! Who would have thunk I had abdominal muscles? Albeit pretty separated post child-bearing, I'm sure!

    Loose skin

I agree with the stretch mark theory. I lost 100 pounds in 5 months (112 lbs since pre op diet) and have loose skin in only the one place I had stretch marks, my lower abdomen. The reason stretch marks reside there was due to a past pregnancy in which I gained 70 pounds in a short period of time.. The stretch marks were flat and faded, but the area refuses to flatten back out. I was worried about my chest, but it has improved slightly in the past few weeks. I'm going to give it more time, especially after I hit my goal weight. My friend had some results tightening up sagging skin with a silicone body wrap she wore under her clothes everyday for awhile. You have to be quite consistent with it and it's not cheap.
  24. Can't believe I have lost 60 pounds ! I am 4 1/2 months postop..., starting weight of 254, today at 194! I am now in the smallest clothes I had held onto from about 8 years ago, and really need to do some shopping as the styles are definitely dated, but I don't want to buy any until it's a smaller size! I had the lap band initially in 2007, and it never seemed to work right- think I lost 30 pounds total and was always getting "stuck" before it finally "slipped" in 2011 and was removed. The sleeve is far superior in every way, and I could not be happier!! Another big difference this time is this message board- it is so full of encouragement, so full of good information, and has kept me motivated and on the right path!! Thanks so much!! Also, I am devoted and faithful to myfitness pal - and I believe it has also been pivotal in my success and encourage anyone to try it!! You can also friend me DocAngTx12 !!
