There is a support group on this site for age ranges, you can find yours there. As for your questions, they are very open-ended. You'll have to take it a day at a time. Period. Do your research and you'll be fine. This isn't about counting calories, Fiber grams, etc... It's about portion control. I haven't counted a single calorie and I've lost 53 pounds since Aug 27th. It works. You'll be fine.

hey mango...it may seem ridiculous, but 2 lbs a month is 24 lbs, and after 2 years, that is 50 lbs, which should bring you pretty derned close to meeting a goal, right? i think 2 lbs a month is spectacular! congrats! when i was losing, and i would hit a plateau, i would have a free day. i know that is a bad thing, but i really surprised myself with my behavior on my free days. while i ate more calories, and a very different kind of food from what my body was used to eating, i still made much healthier decisions than i did pre-banding. throwing the curve ball seemed to keep my body on track. granted, i have not lost much more since feb/march, i don't have all the answers. this is just what i noticed. there are some folks out there that would absolutely flame me UP for saying this.

Obesity Debate w/Coworker; Progress?
Jachut replied to TheCascadian's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Its an endlessly fascinating question. For myself, I personally dont think I use calories any differently from the average Joe, my appetite was just set too high for my energy needs, because basically, what the band has allowed me to do is eat 2000 calories a day and when I added serious exercise to that, whoosh, the weight went away. For a woman and a bandster, 2000 calories is a lot, but I've lost just fine on it. I'm struggling with the last five or six kilos though, I'm going in for a bit of a tune up to get that off, but I do think that at goal, I'll be having a bit of Fluid out because I can maintain quite well on 2000 calories a day, I've been doing so for months. But then, I never got morbidly obese either. I was just fat, and didnt want to become morbidly obese. But for other people, they do all the right things and it STILL doesnt work for them. I agree with you, there IS something different about the way their bodies processes energy from what they eat. I dont do lo carb myself but I do believe some people are almost allergic to carbs, they just have to eat a high Protein low carb diet to have any hope of not just getting fatter and fatter. I dont think science can explain it now, otherwise we'd fix it. Hopefully one day. But I think what all fat people have in common is a hyperinterest in food and a dysfunctional relationship around it that normal weight people often dont just buy into. They dont care about it like we do. I can see the difference between my two sons for instance, one is showing the family trait of being quite solidly built, the other son is a little whippet, full of energy. Number one son can smell food a mile off, he's ridiculous around it, he'd trample over the little ones to get to the table first, number two goes seemingly days without eating. They've grown up int he same circumstances, same household - what makes them so different? -
The Jillian Michaels game for the Wii is faulty at best. However, the wii fit games are awesome. Outdoor Challenge can burn quite a few calories and is alot of fun. Boxing is another big calorie burner. You can burn fewer calories and have fun with tennis and snowboarding. Also Dance Dance Revolution is awesome. There are so many options with the Wii - I don't mind exercising.

Thinking about joining a gym/need inspiration...
laralen02 replied to jennygirl37's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I think that's a great idea! I do yoga and body pump (weight training) classes at the gym. I also use the elliptical and treadmill. Remember NO ONE is there to look at you. Everyone is there to better themselves. I tried a spin class, but left during the first 10 minutes because my heart rate was ridiculously high (and dangerous). It was embarrassing to leave, but I had to do what's best for me! Also I just didn't enjoy the vibe--dark with black lights, strobe lights, loud music, couldn't hear the instructor, etc. I enjoy the other classes more. If you haven't been exercising, it might be better to start with a recumbent bike. The upright bike is more intense. Without a gym, you still have options though. I live in South Texas, so I do alot of walking throughout the whole year. I also own a recumbent bike and ride that almost daily going up and down "hills" while watching Netflix. I also do a yoga video to help with strength and develop core strength. And circuit training videos like 30 day shred. So there's lots you can do at home. As long as you are burning calories somehow! I'm 1 year out, down 85lbs, 36 inches, 14 points on my BMI, and 6 clothing sizes! -
I'll have to ask my doctor is he wants me to stay at 1400 calories once I get a fill. It seems like people are significantly lower than my calorie intake ( expect the 6ft males lol) If I go lower wont my body go back into starvation mode? Its all so confusing : /

Yep, I am guilty too of falling off the band wagon. Chocolate was my culprit, goes down soooooooo smooth when it melts in your mouth. I was also doing a lot of drinking my calories in shakes and such. Damn Sonic!!! Anyways, I gained back 15 lbs I had lost. I am trying to get back into motivation. I used all of the excuses too, wintertime, PMS, stress at work, kids, etc etc. Time for me to take control again. No worries, the next band wagon will be there to pick me up again!!! And they will pick you up too! Just hop on!

Phyllis, I'm right now in crossed-fingers maintenance mode, trying not to gain weight before I can be re-banded in a month or so. I don't have any pipe dreams that a new band will help me lose the 50 lbs I have on me that the medical community would call "excess weight" but I am hopeful it will make the lifelong task of maintaining my weight a bit easier. Constantly clenched jaws do not make for a sensible approach to dieting. Only you can decide if therapy can help. Personally, I've never partaken professionally but I've done a lot of soul searching. What I find hardest is taking the certain knowledge that: a) I am not hungry, and :Banane43: this next bite is unnecessary and possibly harmful , and adding them up into c) I WILL NOT PUT IT INTO MY MOUTH. I'm trying to break down the disconnect between A/B and C so that I can create a connection that will stick with me. WHY is it so hard to remember NOT to eat something? My brain simply doesn't seem to access the control button until AFTER the extra calories have gone into my mouth. Am I distracted? Self-destructive? Unconscious? Stupid? In denial? What??? I don't really think I'm an emotional eater, except on the rare occasions when I consciously know that I feel [insert emotion here] and want [insert activity here] to counteract the emotion. For me that activity is just as likely to be shopping or calling a friend as it is eating, though, so it's not a major source of my excess intake. When I do get a grip of the thought process going on, I have found that there is a sense of entitlement at work--like "I can have this, I'm an adult, no one can tell me I can't..." Rationally I know I need to have another conversation with myself about the UP side of not eating something I COULD eat. The self-talk about entitlement is working at cross-purposes with my goal to improve my health, and I am the loser. That's an ongoing challenge for me, day after day after day. And I look forward to having a band at my side to help with that challenge by giving me other reasons to put the food down.

Every surgeon and every nutritionist seems to have their own guidelines. The best advice anyone can give you is o follow YOUR surgeon's recommendations for YOU. You definitely have it easier than me! I have to start my pre-op diet a week from today and it's only 500 calories of Protein shakes, sugar-free jello/popsicles, and one green salad with calorie-free dressing per day for 15 days!

How big is your band? If it's 10cc's, why can't more be added? I know some people have to be pretty filled to reach restriction. I know sometimes it helps me to go through the 5 whys of why I'm eating, then try to do something else other than eat. I want to eat this- why? because I"m bored. Why? Because everyone is out and I'm all alone. Why? because I chose not to go with them. Etc. THen- if you're really hungry eat, if you're bored, make a list of things to do INSTEAD of eat. It can be a big mental game, and you have to take charge. This is YOUR journey, and the band is not magic, it's WORK- but it's so worth it!!! Good for you for doing zumba, I do too and I LOVE it! It's a great workout! Also, track your food. I use myfitnesspal- they have an app for my phone and I'm religious about tracking everything! It keeps me honest and on track and- it keeps me losing weight! You can track your calories and exercise and Water. Keep posting here too, it's totally a great place to get support and ideas!

Day 21 of my pre-op diet and, despite the rocky start, I haven't fallen down dead yet so all seems good: this would be the official opinion of my GP. As this is Canada and the land of free health care, I'm doubling up on doctors right now and taking the opportunity to be shamelessly used by my GP as test subject. I'm her first patient to get banded so I did a command performance in her office this week again so she could see how I was making out with the pre-op diet. I was there for the pre-pre-op diet, the during, and I have a feeling I'll be getting a call in a few weeks... Inquiring minds want to know I guess. A spot check showed that I was waaaaayyyy down in the land of the ketones, so mission accomplished. If I don't have the flattest liver the surgeon's ever seen, then she can't really blame me because I have held up my end of the bargain. Most days I've been getting only about 700 calories in me and I never ever want to see another piece of salmon as long as I live. At this point, even the protein shakes I'm so very allergic to seem like a tempting welcome change. I've lost a ridiculous 22lbs in three weeks, which borders on stupid, and my body is seriously not pleased about it. I know a lot of that isn't real weight and is just water and excess stored energy reserves, but I nearly lost my pants this week at work and that is a good thing I guess? My mother is driving me batty with the "How much have you lost?" question every. single. time. she sees me and I'm thinking of making up random numbers just to get her to go away. I may have to retaliate with "when did you last pee?" to see if she gets the hint since blatantly telling her it was driving me nuts didn't seem to sink in. So 30-something more hours to go. The clinic actually called me on Friday to remind me of the surgery. Seriously, does anybody ever forget and miss it? After starving yourself for three weeks, pull an oops... slipped my mind?

You will have a hard time on a liquid diet pre op. It is hard post op. If it were easy non if is would have needed surgery. Cut calories by 500 a day, up your water and exercise. Keep your carbs at or below 40 if you can. 10 lbs in 2 weeks is a lot.
-
I am on 800 calories a day without surgery and eating food and there are days I step on the scale and gain 2-3 pounds . The next day i'll be down four. I've gained and lost 2 pounds in the same day. So many variables. Good luck and don't be discouraged!

help...been banded 3mos...
mousecrazy replied to Reggie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
A very important point to remember while you are in the process of adjusting your band, and sneaking up on your optimal fill level, is that JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN EAT IT, DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD. The band is only a tool, and the rest of the program depends on behavior change. You will need to work together with your band. That said, I spent most of my first year with very little fill, and still was able to lose 60 pounds, and I could eat quite a bit a time...but much less than I was eating pre-band, sad to say. Stay patient, and work on some little changes you can make to reduce the amount or calorie level of the food you are eating while waiting on the 2nd fill...hopefully, that will do it for you! Good luck! -
Reggie, Not having restriction doesnt mean your band is not in the right position, it only indicates that you need a bit more fill, and sometimes to find that 'sweet spot' takes a few goes. Until then try and eat more often but small amounts, that way you wont be hungry and also you'll be curbing the calories

Have you ever experienced.....
SyLviE replied to SyLviE's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey, thanks for all the input guys. My gas problem has slowly resolved, and the cold my doctor said it was because I wasn't getting enough calories in my liquid diet. Now I'm on Mushies so I feel lots better. I'm just now trying to get used to the 3tbsp each meal. Boy!! that seems like such a tiny portion!!!! I'm not hungry, tho'.. just trying to adjust my eyes to this kind of portions. Well, thanks again for all your input!!!! -
Every WLS surgeon has their own set of pre-op diet guidelines. So there's no set rules. I'd follow the recommendations of my surgeon. He's in the best position to evaluate your needs. But the norm is a high Protein, low carb diet. For example, my surgeon's guidelines were for a liquid only diet. I could drink Protein shakes that were around 200 calories with 5 carbs or less, per shake.

How Many Calories Should We Eat After Having Lap Band Surgery?
readytogoforit replied to s0utherndivadoll's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
my nutritionist said to keep the carbs at 68 grams. I try to eat them before the evening meal. sometimes I don't even have that many all day! as long as you keep the carbs healthy ones; wheat bread, veggies, fruits. today my doc said to stay away from white foods, mashed potatoes, white bread, donuts. consider fiber when you eat too. I am sure you are not even eating 1000 calories each day, right? -
7 Weeks Out & Stretched my pouch already!!
aaa replied to New & Improved Mel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a much longer recovery back to eating from you by the sounds of it, but I'd just echo what everyone else has said. Don't eat it just because you can. Believe me, I'm the last person I thought would ever be saying something like this, but the day you get sleeved has to be the day you change your eating habits in every way. And this is coming from a former 375lb crazed binge eater who used to eat at least 6,000 calories a day and thought she could never, ever change her behaviours. I used to be sceptical that the sleeve would work for me and was blase when people said the sleeve is a tool that you have to work for, not the other way round. But it's the truest thing about this whole journey. Think of everything you went through to get your sleeve - emotionally and physically. You don't want to go back to old ways. There's no point in just eating the old stuff but just less of it. It'll get you in the long run. I know it sucks sometimes, but just don't even put it on your plate. I really now believe you get out what you put in. What I've found works for me is being pretty rigid and on point with my nutrition during the week - I eat a vegetarian, mainly vegan diet and keep my Protein in the 70s and carbs in the 30s/40s every day. I'm strict on Vitamins and Fiber goals too. Then if I want to eat maybe a little slice of baguette on the weekend when hanging with friends or have a bite of chocolate or a cookie, I do and I don't panic and feel guilty for it because I know that earlier in the day I hit my nutritional goals and the rest is plain sailing. There are times when I've thought I could push it and eat a lot more slider foods or carbs than I had, but I just forced myself to stop and walk away. You're doing so well. Keep on going and test your limits in other ways! -
Which free tracking site is best?
babbs3772 replied to Band_Groupie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi I use fitday.com as well, it works well for me and I will stick with it, I did try Sparkpeople.com but I just couldn't get use to using it sadly - it is a site that pretty much combines forums and calorie tracking(actually it provides a lot) and I met some great people there. However, I always come back to LapBandTalk.com and Fitday. -
Which free tracking site is best?
V-Queen replied to Band_Groupie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I did... I started with fitday, its really simple but they don't have a lot of namebrand food choices so you have to do a lot work to get correct calories ect....then I did daily plate..it has a steep learning curve but you can really break things down and has almost every food or you can add your own. But I like my fitness pal the best ,great food selections and you can add your own, track weight, fitness, calories, fat carbs...its really easy to use. -
Personally, I wouldn't trust the calories these phone apps list as being burned. They are notoriously inaccurate. Unless you've had a series of physical metabolic tests to determine your baseline at your current weight, PLUS have a heart monitor strapped to your chest and and other sensors attached to you to calculate volume of oxygen your body consumes, you won't know what your metabolic rate truly is. Not sure if you are doing so already, but its probably better NOT to factor in exercise in your daily calorie counts. 600-800 cals a day at your weight of 248 lbs would seem like you should be losing weight, though...so when you say you are struggling to lose weight, do you mean you not losing weight at all? How long has it been?

Hi It will be 3 weeks since surgery on Monday and I'm barely getting down 400 calories a day. I can't meet my protein grams. I get sick every time I try to drink a protein shake. I've tried about 5 different kinds so far and I just can't get it down. I don't meet my liquid intake either. I don't feel like eating , drinking anything.
-
Did you consider you may only be getting about 800 calories? Slim fasts are what 150-200? Plus dinner of maybe 400-500? Try increasing your calories a little. Have another 100-200 calorie snack during your day to get yourself going again. A couple of slices of turkey breast and a low fat cheese stick. Some tuna salad and a few crackers. Something with protein!!!!!

Around 3 weeks, I ate more calories then I should have! I had absolutely no restriction. I tried to make healthy choices and stay under 2,000, but eating less than that was very hard!
