1. Hi all it's been a while since I stopped by...to remind you about me I have type 2 diabetes, on an insulin pump. I needed to lose 85 lbs to be at my goal. I've lost 43 lbs and the last weight loss I did have was in November. I need some help. I don't think I'm eating the right foods. I feel like I eat the same 4-5 foods everyday. lunch meat, cheese stick, yogurt Protein bar and Protein shakes.... Not to mention how expensive the Protein Bars and protein power is. I feel lost....I want to lose this other 42 lbs. I don't even know how to get on track or what I should be eating, or how much. It's like everything that I learned in my prep classes, doesn't seem to fit what's happening now. I have been trying to attended Jazzercise 3-4 days a week and walk as much as I can. I'm 47 if that helps any advice given. I did this to hopefully get off the insulin pump my need for insulin has greatly reduced but still on the pump. Thanks in advance!
2. You really need to be working, closely, with a nutritionist. The bars and shakes that you are having should be low calorie (<120-ish), very low carbs (<5) and high in Protein, at least 15-20 gms. Are you drinking enough, no calorie, liquids? I hesitate to give any further advice than that, due to your diabetes. A nutritionist can give you a detailed food plan, to follow.

Feel crummy in the AM

I am supposed to be on purée foods but I find it hard to get in the protein shakes and all the water. In during the day. I have no room for purée stuff! I called the dr and they said to take the purée slow, not a big deal at this point. Such a learning curve!!!

Newbie- 3 day post op gastric sleeve

Try drinking liquids that are room temperature if the cold bothers you. Post op for 4 weeks we stuck to broth, FF soup, yogurt, pureed foods, and shakes. At 4 weeks I tried a small piece of soft chicken, choked on it, and stayed on soft food another 2 weeks. Bad experience. Try a different brand of protein shake. My husband liked Bariatric Advantage (milky tasting) and I liked EAS powder from Walmart. The best advice we got from our surgeon was: Do not eat 3 meals a day. Do not eat if you are not hungry. Even today, 7 months post surgery, we eat only when hungry, and we don't have sit down dinners at any certain time.

Right after surgery especially, and still today, burping signalled we had eaten enough. Wonderful little reminder lol. Usually if you eat a small amount, you can walk away and be satisfied. Everyone is different with their weight loss, we have learned that well here. The soreness from the small incisions won't last long, we never needed any pain medicine after 24 hours in the hospital. Good luck!!!!
5. So I am 3 days out from my sleeve and have a few questions: Did anyone else have spasms after drinking liquids, especially cold liquids? The protein shakes that I loved before surgery are now repulsive. I tried yogurt this morning and did okay with it, what did everyone's immediate post op diet consist of? No one has told me how much I should be 'eating' at one time, does anyone know? How much weight did you lose your first few weeks post op? How long were you sore from your larger incision? I had 5 incisions, one of them larger which is the most tender.
6. I've never had a band, but know 3 individuals who have. They've not met goal in the 3+ years of having the band. Most importantly, they have had complications - swollen esophogus, throwing up, unable to eat certain foods, etc. Knowing that, I looked into other options and found the Sleeve. It appealed to me due to most of the reasons DeeDee mentioned. For experiences of ex-banders, look up posts/blogs by Tiffykins, youknowit, and FabBy50. Best of luck on making your decision.
7. I'm doing very well, thanks for asking. I stayed overnight in the hospital. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I had my last pain meds at 5am on Tuesday morning. I wasn't in too much pain, just pretty sore. So I was home by 3:30 on Tuesday and got to take a nap, which I needed desperately! Following my doctors orders, I've been on a clear liquid diet since then. I've been drinking 2 New Whey protein shots watered down, and then lots of water. For dinner I have a little broth and maybe some tea after dinner. I shouldn't have, but I did weigh myself this morning and am down 6 pounds since Monday, which is really encouraging. I've gone for a few decent walks and just dealing with the soreness. How about you? How's it going so far? I want to hear everything!!
8. Ever surgeon/nutritionist has different requirements. Unfortunately mine is VERY strict. I'm allowed three Protein shakes per day (with specific nutrition requirements), one green salad with calorie free dressing, and two Snacks of either sugar-free popsicles or sugar-free Jello. I'm on day four and it's not TERRIBLE, but it's not fun. Monday was the worst. I had a bad headache all day and I was dead tired. Once I got over that hump, it hasn't been nearly as bad. Oh, and I'm supposed to keep working out throughout these two weeks. I skipped Monday and went to bed, but I've been working out the rest of the days.

Surg tomorrow clear liquid diet today

woohoo i just found a solution to the clear liquid stage 1. surg 6/18. i have humapro 2 flavors but not a huge fan. finances are tight right now so that was going to have to be the solution. i bought sugar free jello and mixed 2 scoops into it and mixed to directions. it is ok. so now 2 cups has turned into 50 grams of protein. i have the peach mango and sour grape humapro. i bought peach and raspberry jellos to pair with the humapro.
10. yes you will. A "meal" will be about 6 to 8 oz after everything is stable. Remember the "rules"... no liquid with meals, Protein first, and smile (well that last one is more a guideline). I am about 10 weeks out and I can drink normallt, and eat in the 5-6 oz range...
11. I have been feeling fine on my pre-op diet. I am using Meal Replacement shakes, which have about 1/3 the RDA of Vitamins and minerals in addition to the 20g of Protein and a little healthy fat. I am also taking a daily Multivitamin, and making sure I get a variety of generous portions of low-cal veggies and a piece of varying fruit each day. I am avoiding carbs and doing light exercise.

vitamins after surgery

I always forget to take mine so don't worry about it . As long as you feel good and are getting in your protein you should be okay.

What Am I Doing Wrong?

I wouldn't say you're doing anything "wrong"....I'd say your sleeve isn't quite ready for pureed food yet. Try going another week on full liquids, and then try a little something thicker again. My first "thick" food was whipped cottage cheese (which was actually on my "full liquid" stage diet), and when I first tried it I had to thin it with a little skim milk. Don't push your sleeve....take things very slowly, and listen carefully to how your body reacts. If something makes you sick, don't eat it again for a while. If a certain consistency makes you sick, don't eat it again for a while. Eat what works for you, and don't worry about what "stage" you're in, or not in. As long as you're getting enough fluids, and Protein (even liquid protein), you'll be fine. Eventually, your sleeve will heal enough to be able to tolerate thicker foods...I promise. And, just as an FYI...I was on "full liquids" for a total of 7 weeks, because my sleeve didn't tolerate pureed foods when I was advanced. After a couple relatively miserable days trying to eat thicker foods, my surgeon pushed me back to full liquids for an additional 3 weeks. When I advanced the second time, everything went perfectly, and I've had no issues since. Oh...and I can't eat eggs anymore, either. I love the taste of them, but they make my stomach very upset. This is a relatively common issue, after VSG...along with people developing lactose intolerance. I wish you all the best! Laura
14. I prefer the protein powder to the rtd ones, but my favorite rtd is ensure high protein. Muscle milk was ok to me before surgery but I can't tolerate it now. As far as powders, I like syntrax nectar chocolate and double stuffed cookie.
15. I had a lap band 3 years ago I lost a total of 74 pounds but everything came to a halt when I started getting bad acid reflex to the point of not being able to sleep because I would wake up with acid in my mouth and me chocking . I went to the doctor he ordered a scope threw my mouth that showed that my Lap band had slipped he said I have to fix it , remove it , or u can opt to get the sleeve . I decided the sleeve it would remove a foreign object and give me the same effect as the lap band . So here I am with the sleeve and having a hard time knowing which Protein powders to get and what Vitamins are good :/ .

Hungary and Eating at night

I'm glad your allergies feel better. I agree, somedays are easier to eat than others. I just realized how much you've lost in a year - Hurray for you - Congratulations. This is wonderful. I'm 30-40lbs from goal. 3 lbs to goal. You can do it. I had an unfil of .25cc in December 9 because I couldn't hold any food down. It's a little better but I'm still thinking about a little more of an unfil. I think if I can get more food in me I'll lose weight. Like if I can get more Protein in. I'm so sick of Protein drinks. What would you do? Fill or unfil, that is the question.
17. Hello all.I'm brand new to the forum and from what I see I'll love it.the question I have is I'm 6 days post op and I feel like wanting to eat everything in sight,I'm getting a bottle and a half of liquids in a day so far and almost two Protein shakes,it just feels like I'm starving all the time,I was sleeved, the first few days I didn't want nothing but now it's the opposite. Will this pass thanks for any info. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App

19. Hi barbie, I'm happy that your new company realizes that there are people that need this kind of assistance. I was banded 8 years ago (self-pay) lost 120 lbs. My insurance didn't cover WLS. I got married and stopped working and couldn't get insurance. I had insurance when I was working and 270lbs but couldn't get it at a normal weight. Crazy right? I'm lucky texas has a pool that everyone is guaranteed insurance however the premiums are crazy. Anyway... I know what you're saying about people knocking the band. I don't knock any WLS since what's good for one may not be good for another. I've had good luck with the band. If I had issues I would most certainly look at other options. Before I was banded, I found this website. And it offered so much information. I noticed there were 2 camps. One's that complained the band didn't work. And the other that said it did (this was before the sleeve). It scared me to the point I almost didn't get WLS. But I noticed the ones that said it didn't work...talked about Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, no exercise, etc. The other where it did work, talked about eating healthy, journaling, exercising. And when they fell off the wagon, they worked to get back on track. I decided to follow them. The journey hasn't been easy but I agree with you.... It's well worth the journey. Any WLS is just a tool.... Not a magic pill. Head hunger is the hardest part of this.... But I'm working to get that monkey in the cage ???? Good luck in your new job and with your upcoming. WLS

Post Fill Question

I had my second fill today and my Dr said liquids for the first 24 hours and that tomorrow night I could try soft mushies. I am starving now but I am faithfully sipping my protein shakes. Some creamy egg salad is gonna be great tomorrow night!!
21. What's your budget? I may get myself a piece of jewelry with a diamond for each 10 lbs I've kissed goodbye. A more affordable option is one of the customizeable lockets with charms inside. You can get crystals in them, plates with "congratulations" or "believe", or even have your surgery dates engraved on the back.

Post Op Diet

Crystal light my hubby bought chicken noodle soup that I strained the broth had more flavor s/f/popcycles. I could not have yogurt or pudding or fudge pops. I did have s/f. The second week. I got to add protein shakes(only) then 4 days after that mush mush now I'm on soft food. I'm 3 weeks out.
23. I haven't posted in so long but I am now at the point where I really want to get this ball rolling. I used to have Kaiser So Cal insurance and switched to Aetna PPO 1/1/09. I did this in the hopes that I could get approval through insurance but I keep getting blocked. It seems that even though I have a BMI over 40 right now that isn't good enough and they want to see a two year history of BMI >40. I have been 35+ for over two years but that isn't good enough either. I haven't even tried to go through insurance cause I don't want to get declined. I just want the damn surgery! I have been going to Overeaters Anonymous in order to deal with the emotional issues as to why I eat over everything so hopefully I will have all of my emotional ducks in a row once I get the surgery. So, now I am in the process of finding doctors who will do patients that self pay. The doctor I wanted only does clients with self pay if they meet the criteria of getting insurance to cover but somehow get turned down. That was Dr. Martin @ Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. I am really hoping that some of you can share some of your experiences, strengths and thoughts regarding doctors, self pay options, prices and any other advice you could possibly give me. I just need help and I feel like I keep coming up on dead ends... I am in the Pasadena area and the surgeons that I am going to place calls to are Dr. Owen, Dr. Nazarian, Dr, Liu, Dr. Korman and Dr. Oliak. Does anyone have any other ideas? Any suggestions? Any reviews? HELP?!?!?!?!?

Can you please help me?

I had my band put in on Sept 17th and since then I have been on a diet (and we all know how those worked for us pre band). I lost 19lbs in my preop and 1st week post op and then have been slow going since. I have not gained anything, but have counted every calorie that goes in, sticks to 3-4 oz protein, 1 cup or 8oz of food, regardless if I am still hungry or not and tries to drink drink drink........... I just had my 3rd fill and anticipate I will probably need at least 2 more before restriction. Until then, I continue to diet.

Gastric Sleeve 9/28/15

I am not a peanut butter fan but I have heard a lot of good things about the dehydrated peanut butter powder and that it is less fat/calories then regular peanut butter but adds protein and great flavor to shakes or what. I have ordered some unflavored Protein Powder that arrived yesterday so I'm gonna try to add that to my Greek yogurt and things today to get my protein up.
