Pascagoula, Gautier or sounding areas Sleeve buddy
1Day1Life4Now replied to beginningofsomethinggreat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
whoaaa, you should get 64 ounces of water daily not protein shakes, but it takes awhile to work up to that. None of us could do it the first week. Review your paperwork for your diet and make sure you are following what they gave you. You should be drinking your water a little bit at a time all day long. Your "meals" such as they are, should be 3 times a day with as much protein as you can take in. You are still on the liquid diet so drink your protein shakes and add as much protein powder as you can to get it all in. I used the over the counter shakes as they had the best taste to me. The first two weeks is difficult and you will have trouble getting the fluids down. Just do the best you can and each day will get a tad easier. Good luck and let me know how it's going. -

Nikki, I'm sorry you're discouraged. You've had phenomenal results thus, and if you feel DS is the way to go then we'll support you. But, please do not feel like a failure. Have you been tested for insulin resistance? Have you had your follow up labs pulled? The craziest thing has happened for me with this journey. I increased my calories to 1100-1200, and I started losing again. I was trying to maintain, but I lost. I don't know what gives. I know you're mentally and emotionally tired, but don't beat yourself up over this. Find an amazing DS surgeon, and don't settle for anything less than the best. DS for me was just not an option with all the Vitamin and supplements required to not get deficient. I read about it, but 20-30 Vitamins taken over the course of a day was just too much for me to even consider. Don't give up on yourself. While researching for an amazing DS surgeon, try adding some healthy carbs in your diet, and let the stress go. Stress will just hurt your body, and give you frown lines, and wrinkles at least that's what my momma told me. Hang in there, and know we're here to support you. -
you gotta hear this...

With all due respect, what he was saying isn't correct. There is nothing wrong with veggie burgers. 10g of protein from a veggie burger isn't any less good for you than 10g of protein from a beef burger. Telling her she's "chewing too much" is just plain stupid and that food particles "aren't big enough" is nuts. If she's getting in her protein, even if that means cheese sometimes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Saying "most banded people don't eat bread or wraps" isn't true either. There are a lot of us that don't do the whole low carb thing and thoroughly enough our bread products. I've lost a lot of weight and I eat bread, rice, Pasta, and potatoes pretty much daily. -
Wow, if medical students had to take a course in Bedside Manner (which they don't), he must have flunked out. And he gets one million extra demerits for the "I don't think this will help" remark. Very little in what he told you is consistent with my understanding of appropriate food choices with the band. And that business about the skins of Beans remaining in the band just doesn't make sense anatomically. No part of any food can make it into your band. The only thing that goes into your band is saline solution. If he meant that it stays in your stoma, that's still a dumb statement. No food should ever stay in your stoma for longer than a few minutes. If it does, something's wrong. If meant that complex carbs like beans offer better satiety because of the Fiber content (which is true for everyone, not just bandsters, and that's because of what happens to them in the intestines, not the stomach), then I don't understand why he thinks that veggie burgers (which contain - hello? - fibrous veggies and (depending on the product) healthy soy protein) are a poor choice. Did anyone in that practice explain all these arbitrary food rules to you before your surgery? Did they tell you that you being a vegetarian was a problem for them? Does he employ a bariatric dietitian? If so, you need to consult with that person, and if you get the same line of crap, it's time to look for another bariatric practice to do your aftercare. Jeez Louise, that p*sses me off. I feel like kicking a dog now, except at the moment they're all being as good as gold.

I dont know if i can drink mint choc, cookies n cream for a month.....lol, i dont like vanilla, choc, or strawberry.... Jst flavoring in life dont like those..... I likeure protein brand its 11oz for 35grams,,.... I might try some isopures, but again takes so much more to reach protein goal....17oz for 40grams.... I would rather consume 22oz of this liquid protein crap than 34oz lol

You should try Premier Protein (Sam's Club)...30 grams of protein and far less of the bad stuff. They only carry chocolate and vanilla, but both are the best tasting I have found yet. If you want variety, mix with PB2, a banana or any number of extras. Good luck!

Surgery Nov. 10th. Question about liquid diet.
KAFallin replied to sleevednole's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm also getting sleeved on 11/10! I have a two week "liquid" diet prior to surgery. I'm supposed to replace all meals with a Protein shake, but I can also have really thinned out oatmeal and cream of wheat, strained 98% fat free cream based Soups, sugar free applesauce, sugar free pudding and sugar free popsicles. Bad thing is I have to start the last day of a trip I'm going on in a week and a half! That should be fun!! -
Past and present patients of Dr. Simchuk
Me.Lisa replied to chicogirl3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I could not have had a better experience for this procedure. There are a few nurses the who have have the surgery with the surgeons so they completely understand your issues before and after. My surgery was at 9:30 and I was in my room before noon. Got up and walked within 2 hours, the nurse encouraged me, but I had these painful gas pains in my lower right side. Walking must have helped because the gas soon passed.I got released at noon the next day. Now that I'm home and I have dropped 10 lbs in 5-6 days the only problem I am having is lower back pain that wakes me up. I suspect that it's the binder because I wear it 24/7 even to sleep in. And I am not meeting my fluid/protein requirements but that was to be expected. I'm sure your experience will be as good as mine. Maybe we will meet up in future at a support meeting. I'm not local, I'm from Yuba City area. Good luck to you -
I was sleeved on sept 20th. I am down 48 lbs! Very happy and noticed that I am losing weight in places like my elbows and noticed my arms are smaller. I have gotten into a routine of med taking and protein drinks. I work in a hospital but the cafeteria usually has good choices for me. I am eating lots of Greek yogurt, chili, lunchmeat, chicken salad. Things are going great. No nausea, and I've only gotten sick one time- because I ate a piece of cake. I wanted it so bad! But now I've learned to just have a bite and I'm good. I admit I'm not exercising enough. But I use the elliptical about three times a week. Very happy I did this!

I had surgery on July 18, 2014. I get the protein in with no problem, because I still use protein shakes. From the looks of it I'll probably be using the shakes for a while. I simply cannot eat enough. The water, another story. I never drank that much water before the sleeve, so I'm just not used to it. But I get it the old college try every day.

Yeah after all the hoops great to have a date. Already bought my whey protein isolate lol

Yes, telling your parents is huge, i know it was for me. As for the age, i just figured, i've been trying to lose ever since i noticed i was getting fat, more seriously in the last 3-5 years, but nothing works...its food that has its hold on me. So anyways, yeah, i think if i didnt do this i'd end up REALLY huge. As for the weight to lose pre-op, depends, does your insurance require a medically supervised diet, does your clinic require a pre-op diet, are you self-pay...whatever. Anyways, the point of pre-op diets is to shrink your liver, the weight loss is a bonus, you will be eating very little sugars, mostly Protein. During this time, you may lose 20, you may lose 5 pounds, as long as your liver shrinks thats important, for the laparascopic surgery, to access your stomach the liver being shrunk helps a great deal. So anyways, once you set everything up and if you choose a clinic, they will likely have a pre-op diet. If it's insurance, then thats their decision. Good luck

Soup like tomato soup does nothing for me as far as feeling full. I try to eat less but it is just me doing it not the band. I also eat cream of chicken soup for the first couple of days because it has protein. I have had three fills and was worried that even this last one did not do much good but once I tried to eat more solid food I realized that I had restriction. I was getting very discouraged but feeling a lot better now. I bet you will be able to tell a diffrence once you are eating solid food. Just be careful and eat very very slow. Good Luck!
-
So i went to get a fill today, cause I'm hungry every two hours no matter what rules i follow. I get there and the surgeon (who I've only met once to give a two second unfill and send me on my way in nov.) asked what I was doing (meal wise) on a daily basis and interrupted and started talking about how i shouldn't be drinking caloric liquids- NO ****!!! Then went on to tell me I'm chewing too much, and my veggie burgers aren't a good choice for protein cause they are "just pieces mushed together" therefore breaking down and moving through my band faster.!!! Not only did he comment on how I'm "really restricted" on my food choices for being vegetarian, he says cheese isn't big enough particles (his words) to stay in the band but beans are a good choice because the skins remain in my band and help stay full longer---Ok?!!?? So i have a stomach full of bean skins instead of a mixed cheese wrap with tomato and onion?!?!!?!?! He gave me .25cc and of course said "I don't think this is going to help"...O really a-hole??!?! I feel awesome with the hunger now- despite leaving the office in tears feeling so beat down and like a big loser!
-
O yea I even told him "ok im confused, if you are supposed to chew your food to the consistency of applesauce, doesn't EVERY food become the same..ie veg burger or cheese or whatever" He says it;s different, yet never suggested anything other than beans that i could eat- I tried to explain that the veg burgers i get are not just vegetables smashed together, but are soy protein...couldn't even finish cause he interrupted with "yea,I've had them before" what a d-bag He should have asked me what other vegetarian "meats" are out there....

Weight Loss After Surgery????
Sojourner replied to Pinkskyy84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A must have that I brought to the hospital with me was a chap stick for my lips which were incredibly dry... For your post op recovery, I would be certain to have at home prior to your surgery all of the prescriptions your surgeon should have given you...especially liquid pain medication. Both the prescription and liquid acetaminophen. I relied on these for a couple of days. There are conflicting opinions as to the effectiveness of using a heating pad post op in the area of my incisions, but I did find that it was soothing and did not cause any increased length of time for the incisions to heal. Also, being prepared to cope with the discomfort of post op gas is essential. Some participants on the forum swear by the effectiveness of Gas-X. I had it a home, but it did nothing to help me. The gas you have discomfort with post op is not the same as gas from digestive issues, which is the type of gas Gas-X is formulated to help. The best therapy for resolving post op gas for me was to walk around the house often, for short lengths of time. I also did as much walking while in the hospital as the nursing staff would allow me to do. Make sure to visit the grocery store prior to your surgery. Stock up on your necessary ingredients for your Protein shakes, SF liquids, SF popsicles, SF Jello, and because I ended up getting strong cravings for salt a few times, I also had cans of plain chicken broth in our pantry. As for rate of weight loss, no two individuals will experience the same. It's much healthier to only establish goals for yourself, and sometimes comparing yourself to others can precipitate unnecessary feelings of discouragement. This question would be better if answered by your surgeon. I would also advise you to not become obsessed with your scale. Minor fluctuations in your weight are normal, and I've read way too many posts from others who report how discouraged they are at gaining 1 or 2 pounds. It happens, is normal, and you will continue to see the scale move in the right direction if you continue to comply with your diet. Best wishes to you as you begin your journey... -
Struggling with food 9wks post-op (especially protein)
stooshiecat replied to stooshiecat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for replying. I've actually been trying to find protein water everywhere but none of the shops in my area sell it unfortunately. It would make life so much easier! Currently I'm taking a multivitamin x2 daily, iron, biotin, vitamin c, calcium citrate with D3, B complex and get vitamin B12 shots every 3 months for pre-existing B12 deficiency. Am I missing anything? -
Struggling with food 9wks post-op (especially protein)
The 56 Bypass replied to stooshiecat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes. I have been using Genepro to break a weight loss stall that began about 8-9 weeks post-op and continued through to 11 weeks. I'd still be in it had I not changed what I was doing. I came up with the solution described below to break my stall/slowed down weight loss as I was thinking about the days right after my surgery. My surgeon has her patients on clear liquids for 14, yes, 14 days!!!!! following surgery. No protein, no vitamins.....ONLY CLEAR LIQUIDS and medications for 14 days. I lost a pound or two a day on the regimen. Since my weight loss had drastically slowed, I was significantly behind on the amount of weight I am expected to lose by my next surgeon appointment and decided I would go back to post-surgery basics, but with protein, meds and vitamins added. I began this regimen on Thursday, March 14th, weighing 219lb. Today, I weighed in at 210 pounds. Here is what I do: I take three 16 ounce bottles of water and to them I add 1 scoop Genepro, which is flavorless, 30g protein and only 60 calories. You can drink it plain or flavor it however you,d like, just don't add calories more than 20, perhaps, with whatever you choose. I add sugar free decaffeinated ice tea powder to mine. These three bottles become my "meals" for the day, breakfast, lunch, supper, giving me 90g protein for the day and only 180 calories. In between these "meals" I drink another 16 ounce bottle of water, giving me a total 96 oz water for the day. Additionally, I take all my meds and vitamins as I am supposed to throughout the day. Once I reach 209 pounds I will be at the bare minimum of where my surgeon expects her patients to be at 3 months post-op, which puts me at the 50th percentile. I plan on continuing this regimen for the entire 14 days in order to get as near to 201 by the end on March, early April, which will put me in the 75th percentile, which is a MUCH better place to be. Anything below the 50th percentile is considered to be a weight loss surgery patient failure. This info is taken from a Duke University study conducted to discover early weight loss predictors for success or failure among weight loss surgery patients. I explain this study and provide links in the video I've posted here in my status update on Bariatric Pal. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. :-) -
Hi, I would like to talk to anyone who is at the four week mark. I am returning to work tomorrow. I am a bit nervous about changing my eating patterns. I am having a soft poached egg for Breakfast and Protein Shake for lunch. With my small meals being yougurt and bannanas, hummus or smashed Beans. My problem is at night when I want Snacks. What are some ideas you may have to help me not get back into a pattern of doing great through the day and wanting snacks at night? Thanks

I have been on this journey since March 5th. I finally have a surgery date of July 14th. Okay that is all well and good but now here is my question. I had a really horrible sinus infection the first two weeks in April and lost my ability to taste. I still have no sense of taste AT ALL! I have lost 35 lbs since this all started without dieting.......if you can't taste you start to lose all interest. Part of me wants to save myself all that money and not have the surgery. I fear though that my taste will come back at some point. I hate to anger my surgeon by postponing. Has anyone lost their sense of taste for over 2 months? I have lost it for about 5 days but never like this. If you were in my shoes and paying out of pocket for the entire surgery what would you do at this point? Hold off until July to make any decisions? Get it done in the hopes it will come back? Postpone and see how much comes off out of boredom that everything tastes like....nothing!? I keep thinking of how many times I wished and prayed to lose weight and get healthy.......oh be careful what you wish for. On the bright side I won't be able to taste protein shakes.

Thank you! And I hope so! The RD has me on Atkins Protein Shakes, I think I might switch to clear liquid just to be safe? Did u exercise as well or was it just your diet? The dietician didn't even mention exercise...?

Hey! I was just wondering if any of you Sleevers out there ever juice? I am 3.5 weeks out and have been craving vegetables like crazy, and was wondering if any of you have juiced and added Protein powder to it? I find it more convenient to drink protein during work and thought this would be a good alternative to pre made shakes. Thank you Sheena :-)

Juicing low carb veggies?
Dreamingofhealth replied to Dreamingofhealth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you Vineeta! I emailed Carla today and she said I could juice as long as it was mostly veggies and to be careful what ones I chose based on how gassy they make me! So as long as I mix Protein powder in there I can have a juice a day! Yippeeee! How are you doing? ? Did you get a date yet my friend??
