OK, I can't stand Isopure, any other ideas
MINI-Me replied to texaschick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too couldn't get past the smell and taste of Protein powders. What FINALLY worked for me was the unjury chicken Soup. It's a little salty in flavor, but none of the issues I had with other Proteins. It is 21 grams of protein. I also use [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Optimum-Nutrition-Instantized-Protein-2-7-Pound/dp/B000GIUQOG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1276226079&sr=8-1]Amazon.com: 100% Any whey Protein: Health & Personal Care[/ame] and add 1/2 scoop to my yogurt and or sugar free Cocoa powder. I cannot taste it at all and it boosts my protein by 8.5 grams. Good luck in finding what works for you. I know it was a struggle for me and many others. -
I try to get 50 grams of Protein a day. I have a morning smoothie that has 1 cup of milk, 6 oz. of nonsweetened, non fat yogurt, and 1/2 of all bran with extra fibre. I have two spoons of benefiber in coffee in the morning. Benefiber is soluble fiber, which keeps food in your gut longer and gels, while non soluble fiber is just that: fiber. It doesn't really mutate much and adds bulk to your digestive tract. Berries are in season right now so I'm going to town on them. I have at least a cup a day of berries. Blackberries are wonderful right now.

My go to Snacks are jerky, mixed nuts, apples and Peanut Butter, edamame, and plain Greek yogurt flavored with Protein powder or Torani syrup. But last week I found a new favorite snack..... Prosciutto and cream cheese "roll ups". Mmmmmm......

What does your 500 calorie diet look like
Daisee68 replied to ResizingRebecca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, I went back and looked at my food log. I was between 600 and 700 calories (closer to 700 most days) at that stage. I was drinking 2 Premier Protein drinks per day at that stage and then filling in the other meals with a couple of tablespoons of hummus or 1/4 cup (or less) of refried Beans with 1 tbsp. of lowfat cheddar melted on top or 1 ounce (weighed) of deli turkey with a Laughing Cow Light cheese wedge or 1 egg white scrambled with a little cheese or 1/2 container of Greek Yogurt (I like Dannon Light & Fit Greek strawberry Cheesecake or Key Lime) mixed w/ 1/2 scoop of Protein powder (I use Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate vanilla - also love the chocolate) or Ricotta Bake from theworldaccordingtoeggface.com. At this point I was still having some broth and/or sugar free popsicles if I thought I wanted something else. You will find in the beginning that you will repeat a lot of meals. At least I did. You have to add in foods so slowly so when something works for you and you eat so little of it, you tend to eat it again for a week or so. I stayed at 700-800 calories for the first 6 months or so then transitioned to 800-900 for a month or two then 900-1000 and now 1000-1100. I sometimes have 1200 but find I don't lose at 1200 so I am trying to transition back to 1100 max until goal. Hope that helps! -

Warning to new sleeves
klus263 replied to hopeandfaith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I could not even have meat the first 4 weeks post op per our guidelines and it said skin was distressful and to avoid it. In this case you would had been better off to grab a yogurt to eat once you got there. I was stuck in the ER room the other week with my husband who had a gallbladder attack.. I did not plan and did not bring any food and the vending machines did not have anything I could even think or want to eat. I did finally go down to the cafe and got just a single chicken breast. I cut it up but still ate too quickly so I could get back to him. He is having surgery on the 11th so I will plan much better in taking foods I know I can eat. A hard lesson to learn but thanks for sharing so we can learn from you. -
How do you know when enough is enough?
TJL replied to byjenna's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I agree with laura-ven, you've got to get in more protein, didn't your NUT give you a diet plan? Drink as much water as you can and find more protein sources that you like. Try adding the unflavored whey protein to your soup, and to your pudding or yogurt. If you don't get in enough protein it can cause problems later. -
Low carb not working
elvis3734 replied to elvis3734's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am using a yogurt dressing on the salad. Bolthouse. Only 2 tablespoons. Will quit the chili. Have to think of something else for lunch though. Thank you. But, I am curious about people losing weight after surgery. Don't they eat only around 800 cal a day and drop a ton of weight? Sent from my SM-J700T using the BariatricPal App -
I'm 10 days pot- op. I've lost 15 lbs since surgery (early on...slow now)... 32 since pre-op diet. I am eating when I feel a need but really don't know if I'm getting enough or too much. I feel good (very sore) but I can tolerate everything without issue. Today I ate a sugar free hello, a fat free tapioca pudding, a cup of tea, water, a tiny bowl of egg drop soup, 1/2 an avocado and a few spoonfuls of Greek yogurt. I'm every other day with protein shakes because I hate them. Is this too much food, not enough... I'm not someone who is going to measure and track and calculate- I know that so why fool myself? I start to feel hungry so I eat a bit... am I going about this the wrong way?

Also, someone posted here about GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder with 30 grams of protein. I had a hard time finding thing I could tolerate at first. By adding the GenePro to the yogurt or cottage cheese I got to my protein goals.

Protein first -- always?
elcee replied to Dikotomy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I could never eat like that. That is not "normal" eating , in fact I think it is really dysfunctional. I eat normal food in whatever order I want. Casseroles with vegies in, stirfry's with meat and vegies mixed up, rissotos, Pasta dishes such as lasagne etc etc. I got banded so that I could stop dieting and eat food the same way that a "normal" person does.So far it's working for me. If I had to eat like that i would have given up long ago. I do sometimes eat strange things at strange times e.g lunch today was homemade muesli with greek yogurt. Full of unprocessed oats, pepitas, sultanas, linseeds etc. No added sugar like in the commercial varieties. Yum. -
This is my first time on a website like this and I am excited to meet new friends who are going thru what I am! Today is my 5th day of liquids pre-surgery and I have researched several different meanings of the pre "liquid diet"... my doctor is Dr. Eric Pham and i am scheduled for surgery on July 19th, 2012. I am extremely excited to have my surgery and am committed to do whatever it takes to be successful with the Lap-Band. How I understood the "liquid diet" was to have only Protein shakes, Water, Vitamin water, clear broth, liquid yogurt and sugar free Jello. I have mostly stuck to chocolate Protein Shakes, lots and lots of water and have added (4) multi-vitamins and (2) potassium and (1) Iron to my diet, as well as Emergency 1000 and Zipfizz which are extra sources of additional Vitamins in powder form (easier to add to my water/vitamin water). Can one of you please respond and let me know how you did on your 2-week "pre-surgery" liquid diet? Can you please give me some pointers as to what you did and how much weight you lost pre-surgery? Thanks so much!! xo OCPrincess

If this is to "keep things moving", so to speak, you might benefit from consuming probiotics (either in capsule form or in something like yogurt.). I eat a ton of salads that have lots of fiber and I still had issues and eating a small yogurt every morning has helped a lot.

What is your go to food when you're out and forgot to bring?
LipstickLady replied to teacherlady2133's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
There are lots of great options out there. I was more than happy to ladle out broth when I needed to. Panera and other restaurants will be glad to do it, too. Most customers want the opposite, so they will happily give you a cup of broth. Squeezable apple sauces are good, single serve hummus cups (sans the crackers) or cream cheese with a spoon are fabulous. My NUT also recommended KFC's mashed potatoes and gravy on puree because they have no lumps. I love my Wawa (gas station and convenience store) for Jerky, string cheese, fruit cups, hard boiled eggs, almonds, yogurt tubes... Don't forget the deli at your grocery, too! They are happy (well, maybe not, but I don't care) to slice one or two cuts of deli meat or cheese. I often have them cut me a bit of roast beef and horseradish cheddar, grab a few olives off the olive bar, and have a great lunch for under $2. The salad bar always has chicken salad, seafood salad, and Pasta salads with Protein mixed in. (I am not above picking out the protein and leaving the pasta!) The seafood counter always has cooked/peeled shrimp, so I will buy 3-4 of those at times (less than $2!) and add them to my seafood salad. Lots of options. You just have to ASK for them. -
3 weeks post op and OUCH! What is that feeling?
Slimk replied to Slimk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone!!! I am going to stick with yogurt, creamy Soups and such for another week. I never want to experience that again! So can someone please explain exactly what dumping is? Is it a bowel movement or a sick feeling? lol -
I'm doing mashed potatoes tonight with yogurt butter and skim milk. I'm excited about that. First eating my protein so just expecting to be able to have a few mashed potato bites.

1. Deviled eggs, if your sleeve likes eggs. 2. Cucumber slices (instead of crackers) with chicken salad, hummus, or tuna salad for dipping. 3. Chili!! 4. Roasted nuts--just take some nuts, a little olive oil, whatever herbs or spices sound good, mix, and put on a cookie sheet in a 400 degree oven until they're lightly toasted--watch carefully, as they can burn. 5. Mozzarella and cherry tomato skewers with pesto to dip. 6. If your local store carries "Beanitos," some of those with bean dip or cheese dip or other high-protein dip. 7. Veggie sticks with ranch-style Greek yogurt dip. 8. Cold shrimp with cocktail or remoulade sauce--yum!

3 weeks post what's your typical meal day
melunruh replied to Mindy78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know that I've had a typical day, but mostly a scrambled eggs for Breakfast, 1/4 cup cottage cheese or yogurt for a snack. A few ounces of lunch meat and a laughing cow cheese for lunch, a banana or part of a Protein smoothie for another snack and then a couple ounces of lean meat and maybe some cooked veggies for dinner. Hi all, Here's the backstory...surgery July 21st....moved up food stage to yogurts, crackers, soups and cheeses ect. On my 3week 2day post surgery I woke up and drank a 4oz protein shake with skim milk (I have done this before but it had been about 5 days) and then proceeded to get sooooo sick...nausous all day....started throwing up in the evening and proceeded to throw up stomach acid and bile until I went to ER the next morning. Surgeon has a CT done and says my surgery (sleeve) is perfect but I have inflamation in my instestines and says I need to see a Gastro guy. I was admitted for a 23 hour observation, surgeon says that inflimation means Crohn's. Well, the Gastro guy says he see's this about 5 times a month and that the two camps don't necessarily agree that one can be a precurser to the other at times. Well, the Gastro guy says that 99% of the time it is NOT Crohn's but a bug so I have to be on a drug for a month and then resee him. MY QUESTION: Could my reaction to the protein shake plus skim milk have caused such a allergic reaction to make me begin to get sick and then ultimatley dehydrated with ended me in the hospital for the weekend? I'm a little concerned to try the protein shakes again although I have been told to stay away from too much milk products...kind of tough to do because in my meal progression, much of it is milk based. Anyone out there lactose intolerant after surgery, how did you know? How did you progress from there because even if I am not for the long run...I kind of have to behave that way for now. Thanks for the support and help! Tracy W.

calories during mushy stage? Frustrated!!
hmarko replied to abercchic's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i asked this exact question to my nutritionist. First you can't possibly get enough protein on 1/2 cup of food. She told me to try and aim for 80-90 grams. She said the focus is healing and the important part is to eat the pureed food and I can eat 1 cup if after i eat the 1/2 cup I am still hungry. I love love love lemon sole pan fried w/ a pat of butter and a whole lemon - this yoou can eat just mash it up. noodleless lasagna - low fat ricotta, mozzarella and Pasta sauce (its a bit high calorie though another poster told me i can find lower calorie ricotta) tuna but not loving that Soups - lentil, potato leek (blend the lemon sole in the late) egg salad or scrambled eggs greek 0% yogurt I am going to make chili (burger beans and spices then blend it) refried beans w/ melted cheese -
I'm 7 weeks post-op & I can tolerate most foods. Salads are fine as long as the veggies are not super crunchy (raw carrots) & I omit celery (too fiberous), even though celery is one of my fave foods! I stay away from mashed potatoes because I LOOOOOVE them but they do not love me anymore Unjury products are great! I use the cheese sauce over steamed broccoli. Greek yogurt is my hero! I can always get that down no matter what. I have to admit that I have given in to temptations a handful of times. My boyfriend made pancakes the other day & I ate half of one. But I paid for it for about 45 mins with pain & discomfort! I also ordered a toasted bagel with light cream cheese without even thinking on my way to work one morning and after my second bite that horrible feeling happened & I had to suffer at work for almost an hour! Also, the other day & started to get a horrible headache at work & my coworker poured a small cup of regular caffinated soda for me & I sipped it slowly. My headache went away but my tummy was quite upset with me for a while! Deli meats are fine, a small 4-6 oz glass of milk works wonders for any tummy upset & trouble sleeping, hard boiled eggs, tuna salad, chicken, fish, etc. I also love GNC Total Lean protein shakes: 25 grams of protein & they taste great. I miss things like an English muffin with my egg whites or a comforting PB&J sandwich with a glass of milk, but the scale numbers keep me very focus, motivated, & happy! It really comes down to trying things to see how you handle them. I was never a big fish eater, but with all the great recipes out there, I have fish 2-3 times a week! And plain, non-fat Greek yogurt can be used in place of mayo & sour cream in evreything! Oh also, I was always a guzzler of natural fruit juices (OJ, apple), but they make me feel horrible for a super long time! Too much suger, even though it's natural sugar from the fruit, it's just too much and I feel sick to my stomach & dizzy for the rest of the day even after one sip! Plain water, G2, diet Snapple, tea, Crystal Light: the only way to go for liquids!

Had 2nd fill on Tuesday, now having PROBLEMS!!
Melissannde replied to alvapo1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not unusual for fills to have a delayed effect. Back down to liquids for tonight, and consider drinking warm liquids too (herbal tea is good, or even warm Water with lemon). Tomorrow, you can do a Protein shake again for breakfast if you like.. or you can try something soft, like yogurt or cottage cheese. Or you can wait for lunch to try soft foods. Whichever you choose, try drinking something warm (coffee, tea, etc.) a little bit before you eat. Warmth can loosen the band just enough to let you eat. If this doesn't work and you continue to have issues with food coming back, call your doctor. In fact, you may want to call them when they open anyway and see what they advise. I've been slightly too tight before and the warm liquids usually does the trick for me. But if your fill is uber tight, you'll need to go in for a tiny unfill. They usually just pull a fraction of a cc back out and it fixes the problem. Sorry you're having issues. Hope you feel better soon.
